- DirectorRobert SingerStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesMark SheppardDean returns from Purgatory, one year after the fight with the Leviathans. After reuniting with Sam, they find out that Kevin escaped Crowley with another Word of God that may hold the key to closing the gates of Hell forever.Pretty solid opener! It's nothing amazing and has some overly dramatic bits that feel kinda stupid, but I really dig the way it starts things up. It also suffers a bit from not doing much as a premiere, it hinges on having episode 2 watched.
7.4/10. - DirectorJohn F. ShowalterStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesMisha CollinsAfter saving Kevin's mother from demons, Sam, Dean, and Kevin go after the Word of God which is being auctioned off by Plutus, the god of greed.I thought this episode was hilarious and insane and just overall a great time. I think the comedy and insanity is like 50% of the show's overall appeal, so I cannot get upset when they lean into it. Sam Winchester literally smotes someone with Thor's hammer. This is the show now.
8/10. - DirectorJensen AcklesStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesKyra ZagorskyWhile trying to track down Kevin, Sam and Dean get sidetracked by a series of murders where the victims have gotten their hearts ripped out.Pretty standard monster of the week episode. It's got a cool premise, and I think the drama between Sam and Dean is decent, but it doesn't pack much of a punch.
6.4/10. - DirectorThomas J. WrightStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesLeigh ParkerSam and Dean come across a home made video of three friends whose lives are turned upside down by a werewolf.Great concept, solid execution! I don't love it, but I do think it's pretty good overall and I applaud the show for doing something so cool and unique for it in its 8th season. I know found footage itself isn't that unique, but it's cool here.
7.4/10. - DirectorGuy Norman BeeStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesMisha CollinsDean assists the vampire, Benny, who helped him escape from Purgatory. Together they go after the nest led by the vampire that bit Benny. Sam thinks back to his life before Dean returned. The flashbacks are the best part about this episode. I like both the Purgatory and Sam flashbacks more than anything in the present. The present story is still good, though.
7.4/10. - DirectorTim AndrewStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesDJ QuallsSam and Dean team up with Garth, who has taken over Bobby's job, as they hunt down a Specter that's possessing innocent people who have a grudge against someone.A surprising episode as I used to not like this one very much. Garth is fantastic as always and the main conflict is pretty fun!
8.4/10. - DirectorCharles Robert CarnerStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesMisha CollinsCrowley has kidnapped Kevin and the rest of the prophets that are able to read the Word of God. Castiel mysteriously returns from Purgatory and helps Sam and Dean rescue Kevin. What an odd episode. I really don't care about what happened in this episode and it sucks because it's a major plot episode, but nothing at all got accomplished.
6/10. - DirectorPaul A. EdwardsStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesMisha CollinsCastiel decides to become a hunter, like Sam and Dean. But his first day on the job is a doozy when they investigate a series of murders caused by old cartoon gags. Meanwhile, Sam thinks back to his first time meeting Amelia's father. Now THIS was a banger. It was hilarious, had some awesome moments in it and felt like a great high concept Season 4 or 5 episode. Unfortunately, some bad flashbacks keep it from being a 9 or even a 10.
8.7/10. - DirectorNick CopusStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesTy OlssonBenny seems to be attacking innocent people and only Dean believes he's innocent. It's a decent episode made way better by a pretty great climax that ups a lot of the stakes and tension.
7.4/10. - DirectorRobert SingerStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesMisha CollinsDean and Castiel try to rescue Samandriel from Crowley. Sam tries to decide whether or not he should continue hunting or be with Amelia. This episode feels like a soft reboot for the season. We ditch a lot of the plots that didn't work and the conclusion we get for them is nice, too. It also furthers a lot of the cool mysteries.
8.4/10. - DirectorJeannot SzwarcStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesHank HarrisWhen two LARPers turn up dead, Sam and Dean investigate the fictional world of Moondoor, where they find a familiar face. This episode is REALLY funny and I REALLY like Charlie so it's a dope episode.
8/10. - DirectorSerge LadouceurStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesGil McKinneySam and Dean's grandfather, Henry Winchester, arrives by time travel, claiming that he has something to protect from an Abaddon that is hot on his trail. This episode expands this show's lore in a ton of huge ways and in doing so, delivers a really exciting episode.
8.4/10. - DirectorPhilip SgricciaStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesHal LindenSam and Dean go up against a group of Nazi necromancers.I do hate Hitler. I do also really enjoy this episode.
8/10. - DirectorKevin ParksStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesOsric ChauKevin has found out that in order to close the gates of Hell, the person needs to accomplish three tasks. The first, is to kill a Hellhound. This is a pretty solid plot episode! I really enjoy the way the episode brings back Hellhounds and I think the plot centric stuff in it is great too.
8/10. - DirectorJohn F. ShowalterStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesChristian CampbellJames Frampton, an old friend of Sam and Dean, has become a witch. Now he's supposedly killing innocent people.WHAT
3/10. - DirectorSteve BoyumStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesBrooke LangtonSam and Dean come across a mysterious man that dies once every day.A pretty fun episode! It's not amazing, and it's closer to a 7 than the 8 I'm gonna give it, but it coasts by on being a pretty fun episode.
8/10. - DirectorThomas J. WrightStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesMisha CollinsSam and Dean hunt down the angel tablet with assistance from Castiel and Meg.This episode kicks the season up nicely and introduces a ton of cool new elements and some cool set up for Season 9.
8/10. - DirectorJohn F. ShowalterStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesMadison McLaughlinA hunter has been training Krissy and other kids to be hunters.Krissy Chambers is fun and I think this episode is pretty fun. The ending kinda cheapens it a bit, but I had a good enough time.
7.4/10. - DirectorGuy Norman BeeStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesMark SheppardThe second task is to rescue an innocent soul from Hell and deliver it to Heaven. Now THIS shit is the good shit. I really enjoyed the trial at hand and I thought the way they executed it was really fun. It also feels like the season is fully coming to a head which is really cool.
9/10. - DirectorRobert SingerStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesLynda BoydWhile searching for Kevin, again, Charlie joins up with Sam and Dean as they track down a creature that's been liquefying its victims. Plus, a new side of Charlie is revealed. It's pretty fun! I dig Charlie and I think she and Dean have a lot of good moments in this episode and Sam's continuing spiral is really well handled.
8/10. - DirectorRobert Duncan McNeillStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesMisha CollinsSam and Dean search for the Word's author, Metatron. Castiel tries to protect the angel tablet. Kevin tries to solve the third trial under Crowley's supervision.Metatron's introduction is really fun and I love the feeling of the season ramping up the way it is!
8.4/10. - DirectorThomas J. WrightStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesMisha CollinsSam and Dean try to figure out how to cure a demon. Crowley starts killing victims that Sam and Dean have saved from previous jobs. Castiel and Metatron begin the trials to close the gates to Heaven.Just overall an awesome episode. Diving into the Men of Letters is really sick and I think the way Crowley is handled is really dope.
9/10. - DirectorPhilip SgricciaStarsJared PadaleckiJensen AcklesMisha CollinsSam and Dean capture Crowley to finish the trials and close the gates of Hell. Castiel and Metatron continue the trials to close the gates of Heaven. Sam is left with a huge decision. This is my second favorite finale in the show. The twist is epic, the final scene is fantastic and just overall it's a tremendous episode that even if it rips off Season 4's finale in some ways, I love it all the same. Great character stuff.
10/10.
