Waiting In The Wings

Five actresses who are still flying low under the radar and haven't yet landed a film role that could get them bigger parts in cinematic projects.

1. Ciara Baxendale

Actress | My Mad Fat Diary

Ciara Baxendale was born on July 19, 1995 in Bury, Lancashire, England, UK. She is an actress, known for My Mad Fat Diary (2013), Inheritance (2024) and Trying (2020).

Despite being one of the stars of one of the best ever dramas commissioned by Channel 4 and as the lead in the CBBC First World War drama 'Harriet's Army', Ciara Baxendale is still largely unknown. She had a blink-and-you'll miss it part in 'Spike island', but I'm looking forward to see her get the lead or a supporting role in a film.

2. Phoebe Dynevor

Actress | Fair Play

Phoebe Dynevor is a British actress born in Manchester, England in 1995. She is the daughter of actress Sally Dynevor and screenwriter Tim Dynevor. Phoebe attended Cheadle Hulme School where she landed her first professional acting job, Waterloo Road (2009) when she was fourteen. She has since had ...

Although she is starting to make some headway in her career on TV, as a result of the semi-regular role in Series 2 of 'The Village', I think Phoebe could easily make the move from television to cinema. She certainly has the talent to take that leap from TV to movies.

3. Katherine Rose Morley

Actress | Black Mirror

Katherine Rose Morley was born on October 3, 1989 in Liverpool, Merseyside, England, UK. She is an actress, known for Black Mirror (2011), Last Tango in Halifax (2012) and The Mill (2013).

Before she got a major role in 'The Mill', I hadn't heard of Katherine Rose Morley before, but after seeing her holding her own alongside veterans Kevin McNally in that drama and, of course, Anne Reid, Sarah Lancashire & Nicola Walker in 'Last Tango In Halifax', I think there's nothing to stop her scaling the movie heights. Let's hope her debut film 'The Caravan' sets her off on that path.

Unlike the first three, Danielle Hope has so far only found stardom on stage. Other than programmes that have a theatre and musical theme, she has never been cast in anything resembling a comedy or a drama on TV. Neither has she been up for a role in a film. When I saw her win the reality show contest to find a lead for a stage version of 'The Wizard of Oz', I was able to see that she could shine in front of a movie or TV camera. What I hope for now is that casting directors in both entertainment mediums start sharing my view.

5. Carly Bawden

Actress | Close to the Enemy

Carly Bawden is known for Close to the Enemy (2016), Call the Midwife (2012) and Doctors (2000).

The fifth actress on my list has also become a star only in theatre circles. I myself saw her on stage in Sheffield in 'My Fair Lady' alongside Dominic West, and the way she projected the character of Eliza Doolittle and gave the personality added dimensions told me that she could easily do the same when making a TV drama or filming a movie. It would be great to see her get the chance to do both.
