Soon after arriving in Kilmer County, Duke meets newspaper editor Matt Brady and Matt's attractive daughter Julie. Julie tells Duke that there is plenty of oil under Kilmer County but that no one has dug deep enough to find it. Though Julie is Tex's old sweetheart, Duke pursues a romance with her. Julie later rejects Tex's marriage proposal, telling him that she does not want to marry an oil man or a newspaperman like her father because they live unsettled, transient lives. Always searching for a way to make an easy profit, Duke devises a plan to fleece the people of Kilmer by having them invest in oil drilling that is unlikely to yield oil. After drilling for several days without striking oil, Duke declares the well dry and makes preparations to leave town with the remainder of the investors' money. Tex, however, refuses to abandon the project without fulfilling his obligation to the people of Kilmer, and insists on digging another thousand feet. Tex demands that Duke turn over his share of the money to complete the drilling, and a fistfight ensues when Duke accuses Tex of using the drilling to impress Julie and win her affections. Duke leaves town for West Texas, but Julie, who is in love with Duke, follows him and offers to marry him. Julie and Duke wed, while Duke earns little money building wells in West Texas, Tex and Delbert, who have continued their digging in Kilmer, strike oil. Later, Julie realizes that Duke has been abusive to her because he is too proud to accept money from her and is uncomfortable with newly acquired oil wealth. Months later, Julie gives birth to baby boy, and Duke finally strikes oil, making him a millionaire. When the governor of Texas and other legislators meet at Duke's house to discuss oil matters, Duke persuades them that it is time to create laws that will force all oil producers to pro-rate the amount of oil they take from each well. Though he does not reveal his motives to the legislators, Duke knows that such a law will badly hurt Tex. Tex, however, decides to disobey the new law and continue producing oil at full capacity. Many independent oil drillers resort to violence against the state oil inspectors in order to keep their wells running. Julie leaves Duke when the militia is sent to Kilmer as a result of Duke's heartlessness in enforcing the law. Duke eventually realizes his foolishness, and goes to Kilmer to settle his differences with Tex. Duke and Tex engage in a bruising hand-to-hand fight, then having cleared the air, resume their friendship.

When Dan refuses, Anderson's men sabotage his drill. Penniless, Dan resigns himself to take the money, until his son Clifford, called "Fishtail," meets geologist Henry Langford, who promises to help. Henry then convinces Fishtail to go to school at night so that Henry can spend time with pretty schoolteacher Cynthia, who wants Fishtail to be the first O'Reilly to get an education. Then, when Henry discovers Anderson cheating the local independent contractors of a fair price for their oil, while unjustly foreclosing other leaseholders, he calls a town meeting. The townspeople confront Anderson, who appeases them, but the next day, while Dan rides the oil-drilling rig, the cables snap and he is killed. Henry is convinced Anderson is behind the murder. With two days left on the lease, Fishtail is nearly at oil sand when Anderson's thugs abduct Henry and Anderson tries to bribe Fishtail off the land. Fishtail refuses, so Anderson's men shut down the drill and knock him out. Henry, who has escaped, arrives in time to save Fishtail before Anderson's men dynamite the rig and the long-awaited oil is released. Cynthia, who has since fallen in love with Henry, then sends Fishtail to military school, and he returns a gentleman.
- DirectorSherman A. RoseStarsJack CarsonMickey RooneyNancy GatesGeologist Frank Sommers and engineer Bix Decker, who are both employed by Zenith Oil Co., have toiled in South American oil fields for the last six years. As his contract with the company is about to expire, Bix, tired of the primitive conditions of life in a small, back-water town, notifies Zenith Vice President Ernie Biggers that he is quitting. Biggers, who has thwarted all of Bix's previous attempts to leave the company, magnanimously agrees to release Bix from his contract, but when the Zenith plane lands carrying Bix's replacement, engineer Jane Rivers, Bix has second thoughts about putting a woman in charge of the oil fields. Jane responds to Bix's skepticism by calling him "an old fashioned roughneck with a butch haircut." Their squabbling is interrupted by Pepi, a member of Bix's crew, who has come to report a crisis in the field. When Jane suggests calling "emergency," Bix chortles and follows her back to the office. After Jane hand him his final check, Bix begins to feel regret over his decision to leave and goes to the local bar to commiserate with his friend Frank. Soon after, Werner Jackson, a wildcat oilman who has a long-standing feud with Bix, arrives at the bar and gives Bix a hard time about Bix being replaced by a woman. Werner's jibe leads Bix to believe that Biggers deliberately sent Jane so that he would have second thoughts about leaving. Proceeding to the Zenith office, Bix accuses Jane of "setting him up." Affronted, Jane points a gun at Bix, and after he wrests it away, he kisses her. Jane then slaps Bix, after which he agrees to allow her to "work for him." At Julie's cafe, Frank is talking to Julie, Bix's girl friend, when Werner enters and insults her. When Frank, who is famous for never winning a fight, objects to Werner's slur, Werner slugs him. The next day, Bix reads Jane's resume and discovers that she is a qualified engineer. After Bix apologizes to Jane and they reach an agreement to work together as equals, Señor Ramon Serrano, a representative from the government petroleum industry, informs them that unless Zenith Oil produces their allotted amount of oil within six months, his government will cancel their oil lease. Motivated by adversity, Bix, Jane and Frank work day and night to meet the deadline. Weeks later, their efforts to develop new wells have put them ahead of schedule, and to celebrate, Bix kisses Jane and calls her a "real roughneck." At that moment, Julie comes to the office, sees them embracing and storms out. When a ground sample indicates there is oil below, Bix orders drilling to commence, despite the warnings of Chuck Evans, one of the Zenith crew, that the drill casing might fail, creating a situation that could lead to a fire. As drilling begins, Frank, Bix, Jane and Julie celebrate at the cantina. There Bix asks Jane to dance while Frank consoles the dejected Julie. Still dubious about the safety of the operation, Jane mentions the casing, sparking an argument with Bix. After Jane storms out of the cantina, Frank and Bix start quarreling about the casing and Bix slaps Frank. Just then, Chuck rushes in to announce that the casing has failed and the well has erupted in flames. While Bix and Frank rally the men to extinguish the fire, Pepi goes to notify Jane about the situation. Driving a skip loader, Bix and Frank lead two trucks loaded with men carrying nitroglycerin to blow up the fire, but they are stopped by Werner, who has blocked the road with his skip loader. Pushing Frank aside, Bix charges at Werner, who throws a wrench at Frank, knocking him to the ground in front of the now driverless skip loader. After pulling Bix out of the vehicle's path, Frank climbs onboard and buries Werner in a load of dirt. With Werner immobilized, the Zenith crew proceeds to the fire and is met there by Jane. While Frank and Bix don fire-resistant suits, Julie tells Jane that she and Bix are "just friends." Frank and Bix then brave the fire to throw a cable into the well through which the nitroglycerin will be lowered. Once their task is accomplished, Jane helps Bix off with his suit while Julie comforts Frank. Soon after, the well explodes, extinguishing the fire and drenching everyone in oil. With the deadline met, Bix and Jane prepare to leave for the United States where they will be married and scout sights for Frank and Bix's new oil venture. Frank and Jane drive Bix and Julie to the airfield where they are to meet Biggers and fly out on the company plane. After Biggers' plane lands, Jane prepares to board, but Biggers informs her that she cannot leave because she still has eight months remaining on her contract. Biggers then generously offers to extend Bix's contract for eight months so that the newlyweds can stay in South America together.

- DirectorKeefe BrasselleArthur CrabtreeStarsKeefe BrasselleKay CallardKarel StepanekAmerican engineer Brett Manders, an expert in the use of explosives, quits his job in the Middle East after being paid $5,000 to extinguish an oil fire. Brett plans to fly from Baghdad to London to reunite with his girl friend, Pat Patterson, so Ismael, a truck driver who works for the oil firm, offers to give him a ride to Baghdad. They are accompanied by the alluring Men Hassa, who is attracted Brett. Unknown to Brett, both Ismael and Men Hassa are working for a secret political group to ensure that Brett boards the London-bound plane. Upon reaching Baghdad, however, Men Hassa defies orders by inviting Brett to her apartment and seducing him to convince him to stay. The next morning, the womanizing Brett leaves Men Hassa, but when he calls from the airport to say goodbye, she begs him to come back. Having overheard their conversation, Ismael kills Men Hassa. After a stop in Algiers, Brett reaches London, where a man named William Cross unexpectedly comes to his hotel room and offers him $100,000 to perform an unspecified task, then arranges to meet Brett later that night. While informing Pat about the meeting, the unprincipled Brett declares that his only interest is in the money, not in what he has to do to earn it. That evening, Cross brings his employer, Arnold Langford, to Brett's hotel room, where Langford explains that he wants Brett to kill Ibraham Sayed, an envoy sent by the United States to bring peace to the Middle East, a development that would curtail Langford's sales of armaments. Sayed, who is to arrive in London in three days, will be driving from the airport to his home in Mayville Square, and Langford proposes blowing up the envoy's car as it reaches his house. Langford suggests that Brett work with Tommy, a mechanic who can help assemble the bomb. Upon discovering that there is a vacant house for sale across from Sayed's property, Brett and Pat, posing as prospective buyers, gain access to the building and Brett makes a mold of the key. Meanwhile, Maj. Osborne and Lt. Jeff Collins of British Intelligence are notified of Men Hassa's murder and learn that she has a brother, Nuri, who works for Trans Desert Airways in London. As Brett meets with Tommy that night, Jeff slips into the Trans Desert office and photographs some papers documenting the airline's travel routes and ownership. At the house on Mayville Square, Tommy and Brett discover a tunnel leading under the road and decide to place the bomb there. When Brett relates his plan to Langford, Langford asks him to come to the Trans Desert warehouse later that evening. Meanwhile, at headquarters, Jeff develops the film and learns that Trans World is owned by Langford and Cross, who were formerly officers in the German army and are now proprietors of an export company. Realizing that they may be using the airlines to smuggle armaments, Osborne and Jeff decide to investigate the Trans Desert warehouse. They arrive just as Cross, Langford and Brett are opening cases of explosives. In the ensuing shootout, Jeff is wounded and Cross is killed. Concerned for Jeff's safety, Osborne pulls him from the warehouse, allowing Brett and Langford to escape. As a medic tends his wound, Jeff remembers that one of the men spoke with an American accent. A search of Americans who have recently arrived from Baghdad, the airline's base, turns up Brett's name. Upon discovering that Brett worked at the same company as Men Hassa, Osborne puts out an all-points bulletin for him. On the day before Sayed's arrival, Brett tells Pat to meet him at the airfield the following afternoon. The next day, Brett goes to Tommy's workshop to pick up the bomb. Tommy, who is having second thoughts, suggests that they double-cross Langford and turn him in to the police for a reward. When Tommy pulls out his gun, Brett knocks him unconscious, takes the bomb and proceeds to Mayville Square. As Brett sets up the explosives, Langford comes to await Sayed's arrival. While packing her suitcase, Pat hears a radio news broadcast reporting that Sayed's plane has landed and he is currently on his way to his house on Mayville Square. Recognizing the address as across the street from the house they visited, Pat realizes that Sayed is Brett's target. Aware Sayed's elimination would endanger the possibility for peace in the Middle East, Pat hails a cab to drive her to Mayville Square so that she can warn Sayed of his danger. Finding the road closed, Pat jumps out of the cab and runs toward Sayed's car. When Brett sees Pat approaching and tries to warn her, Langford prematurely detonates the bomb, killing Pat but sparing Sayed. Thinking that he has been double-crossed, Langford shoots Brett, but before dying, Brett pulls a grenade from his case and hurls it at Langford, blowing him up.
