McAvoy was born on 21 April 1979 in Glasgow, Scotland, to James, a bus driver, and Elizabeth (née Johnstone), a nurse. He was raised on a housing estate in Drumchapel, Glasgow by his maternal grandparents (James, a butcher, and Mary), after his parents divorced when James was 11. He went to St Thomas Aquinas Secondary in Jordanhill, Glasgow, where he did well enough and started 'a little school band with a couple of mates'.
McAvoy toyed with the idea of the Catholic priesthood as a child but, when he was 16, a visit to the school by actor David Hayman sparked an interest in acting. Hayman offered him a part in his film The Near Room (1995) but despite enjoying the experience McAvoy didn't seriously consider acting as a career, although he did continue to act as a member of PACE Youth Theatre. He applied instead to the Royal Navy and had already been accepted when he was also offered a place at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD).
He took the place at the RSAMD (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) and, when he graduated in 2000, he moved to London. He had already made a couple of TV appearances by this time and continued to get a steady stream of TV and movie work until he came to attention of the British public in 2004 playing car thief Steve McBride in the successful UK TV series Shameless (2004) and then to the rest of the world in 2005 as Mr Tumnus, the faun, in Disney's adaptation of C. S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005). In The Last King of Scotland (2006) McAvoy portrayed a Scottish doctor who becomes the personal physician to dictator Idi Amin, played by Forest Whitaker. McAvoy's career breakthrough came in Atonement (2007), Joe Wright's 2007 adaption of Ian McEwan's novel.
Since then, McAvoy has taken on theatre roles, starring in Shakespeare's 'Macbeth' (directed by Jamie Lloyd), which launched the first Trafalgar Transformed season in London's West End and earned him an Olivier award nomination for Best Actor. In January 2015, McAvoy returned to the Trafalgar Studios stage to play Jack Gurney, the delusional 14th Earl of Gurney who believes he is Jesus, in the first revival of Peter Barnes's satire 'The Ruling Class', a role for which he was subsequently awarded the London Evening Standard Theatre Award's Best Actor.
On screen, McAvoy has appeared as corrupt cop Bruce Robertson in Filth (2013), a part for which he received a Scottish BAFTA for Best Actor, a British Independent Film Award for Best Actor, a London Critics Circle Film Award for British Actor of the Year and an Empire Award for Best Actor. More recently, he reprised his role as Professor Charles Xavier in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) and X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019). He began his depiction of Kevin Wendell Crumb, also known as The Horde, a man with an extreme case of dissociative identity disorder in M. Night Shyamalan's thriller Split (2016) and continued it in the sequel, Glass (2019). Also in 2019, he played Bill Denbrough in It Chapter Two (2019), the horror sequel to It (2017).
McAvoy and Jamie Lloyd look set to continue their collaboration in December 2019, with a production of 'Cyrano de Bergerac' at the Playhouse Theatre in the West End, London. The project has been on the cards as long ago as 2017, when McAvoy posted a picture of him reading the script and wearing a false nose.- Actor

Tommy Rettig was a successful child actor in 1954 when he was chosen out of a field of 500 to play Jeff Miller in the TV series Lassie (1954), which premiered on September 12, 1954, making him the first boy who tagged after Lassie during the famous collie's 20 years on the CBS television network. He was with the show for four years, after which Lassie acquired a whole new family. As an adult, he was a photographer, tool salesman, computer programmer, and health club manager.
Rettig was born in Queens, New York City, the only child of Rosemary (Nibali) and Elias Rettig, a Lockheed aircraft-parts inspector. His father was of Russian Jewish descent, and his mother was of Italian heritage. Tommy began his career at age five, after he was spotted by an acting coach who lived in the family's apartment building. After touring with Mary Martin in Annie Get Your Gun, he landed roles in movies beginning age nine, making 17 films in total, among them River of No Return (1954), starring Marilyn Monroe, and perhaps most memorably as the boy with the vivid imagination in The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T. (1953). At 12, he was cast as Jeff Miller. He bonded strongly with his canine costar--who, like the whole line of Lassies, was male--and even took him home on weekends (the family had moved West in 1949). That stopped when Lassie became confused about whether to obey his trainer or Rettig.
He was busted in the '70s for marijuana possession and cocaine smuggling (The latter charge was overturned), and was also a long time advocate for the legalization of marijuana. Tendal, born into a family of acting and storytelling (mother is SAG-AFTRA actor/filmmaker Sheri Mann Stewart; dad is international storyteller Barry Stewart Mann, brother is actor/poet/activist/politician Royce Mann) began his professional career at age 7 on stage in his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. He was the only youth (and with an original monologue), in an ensemble of top actors and musicians in a multi-theater benefit for Hurricane Katrina victims, helmed by now-prolific/award-winning playwright Lauren Gunderson. Through that, he was "discovered" and became the youngest Tiny Tim to date at the Tony Award-winning Alliance Theater, where during 7 years of the annual production and roles at various other pro theaters in ATL, he earned all of his weeks to become a member of Actors Equity (and realized it didn't make sense at that age in ATL), playing to over 100,000 and making numerous media appearances during his 7 years of the annual production (moving into older roles after 3 years). He was Dill in To Kill a Mockingbird in a critically acclaimed performance (see review below). At age 9, he made his film debut and walked red carpets and spoke on panels in Toronto, LA, and NY with David Oyelowo and Alessandro Nivola in director Jerry Zaks feature, Who Do You Love (2008) (World Premiere at Toronto IFF and winner of Audience Favorite Awards at the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival, 2010 and others) playing son Marshall Chess. By age 13, he was directing, writing AND starring in the film Zombie Crush: A Teenage Zomedy (2013) with favorite collaborators, (link=co0390558). As a teen actor, Tendal starred in the multi-international-award-winning Italian film Bullied to Death (2016), starred in SouthSouthWest (2014), directed by Madison Hamburg, and toured Alaska in a powerful show with Yupik artists exploring the painful history with schools of "Assimilation". He was directed by Peter Farrelly as a principal in a national March Madness sponsor commercial and enjoyed time in The Bahamas in a production for Cartoon Network. Tendal made his film directorial debut at age 13 with Zombie Crush: A Teenage Zomedy (2013), recognized with a Best Comedy nom at the International Family Film Festival, LA -- he also stars in a film he co-wrote, Gamerz (2012), which won the Infinity Audience Award and was an official selection at the Macon Film Festival. He spent a year at Hampshire College as their chosen Humanitas Award scholar after a gap year of driving multiple times cross country for various adventures. He and his younger brother, Royce, traveled extensively in summer '18 to more than 10 countries in Europe and Eastern Europe. He is now taking a break from school and is back into acting, music, and other artistic and fulfilling endeavors including screenwriting and activism. Tendal plays the antagonist in Terri J. Vaughn's Terri J. Vaughn hilarious feature #DigitalLivesMatter (2016) and plays a supporting role in the current web series Walter Frisk Lets Go (2017). Tendal is a lifelong vegetarian and has grown up in a co-housing community with his family and rescue pup Onyx. He donates portions of all his earnings to charity. He enjoys Stand-Up, Improv, digital music composition, and was a drummer in the band Radio Royale. He loves nature hikes, snow boarding, world travel, cooking, Philosophy, Psychology and hanging out with friends. Tendal keeps an active passport and is always interested in entertaining new roles in quality projects and collaborations globally on either side of the camera.
Review at age 9 from the ATL Journal Constitution for the role of Dill in a critically acclaimed production of "To Kill a Mockingbird": "The big discovery coming out of Theatrical Outfit's new production...the performance that ought to have these vaunted Atlanta thespians watching their backs comes from a scene-stealing 9-year-old tyke named Tendal Mann. Wearing a bow-tie and knickers, speaking with an authentic Southern lisp that would do his Capote-based character proud, this bean-sprout of a boy virtually skips away with director Rosemary Newcott's staging...Smart, ironic and very, very cute, he's the real Dill...When this Charles Baker "Dill" Harris arrives in Maycom, the socially savvy kid hands out his own cards. For casting directors everywhere, Tendal might consider doing the same."
