- Olga Adela Zubarriain was born in Buenos Aires on October 30th 1929. She began her career in the old Lumiton studios in 1943 as a bit player in Safo (Carlos Hugo Christensen-1943). Her real chance when the studio prepared an adaptation of the novel Frau Elsie by Arthur Schnitzler which was called The Naked Angel. She was chosen by director Christensen and by script writer César Tiempo. The film was released in 1946 and was a tremendous success because it was the first time an Argentine actress dared to appear half naked in a film. There was no problem with censorship. From the on Zubarry worked for Lumiton up to 1950 when she began to free lance. She's today considered as one of the most important actresses of the old studios and her role in The Thirst aka Man's Son (Lucas Demare-1961) deserved the Best Actress Prize at the Spanish San Sebastian Festival. In 1960 she married Dr. Juan Carlos Garate and gave priority to her marriage and her two daughters. However, even when she became more and more active on TV, she has at least one memorable role in Invasion by Hugo Santiago. She decided to leave her career in 1997 after Souls' Square. Laura Hidalgo, whose real name was Pesea Faerman, was born in Romania in 1927. She arrived in Argentina when she was two years old. From 1945 she showed a remarkable ambition to become a movie star. She was rejected by some studios because of her weight and she lost more than a few pounds. Meanwhile she had began studying theater with Hedy Crilla and in 1949 she shot her first movie - even when she had bits as an extra. That flick was a cheap quickie called His Last Boxing Match - Su Ultima Pelea. She was learning her craft and after some B movies she got lots of publicity because she was a real beauty. Dark haired and with emerald eyes, a big studio like Argentina Sono Film manufactured her as a sort of Argentinian Hedy Lamarr. The film that made her was The Orchid in 1951. She worked only for that studio and her career was brief because it lasted only until 1957. Not a very keen worker she did not like the business but it meant fame and money for her. Despite some successful weepies she did not reach a solid status until Beyond Oblivion - a beautiful melodrama directed by Hugo del Carril. She had filmed two movies outside Argentine - in Mexico and Spain.
In 1957 she went to Mexico to shoot a second movie there, a cheap thriller and decided to stay in that country. According to some sources she had begun a relationship with a powerful professional whose surname was Rossen. They married and they had three children. At the beginning of the 80s they moved to La Jolla in California. Hidalgo returned to Argetina for some opportunities during the 60s, but thanks to concert pianist Bruno Gelberg, in 1987 she came back with a vengeance. She was promoting a poetry book - a good one - and she played the game very carefully. She had not been forgotten and she had recovered her old self, the one from the movies. It was the last time she visited Argentina. She was invited to the Nantes Festival in 1995 where they were showing Beyond Oblivion but did not show interest in going there.
However, Uruguayan literature critic Jorge Rufinelli - resident in California - persuaded her to visit some universities in the States where that movie directed by Hugo del Carill was shown to students. Her death came as a surprise to all her admirers - the young ones now in their 50s and the old ones now in their 70s. She was a true star but never believed in stardom. Her goals were to raise a family and to live comfortably. One of the verses of her poems says it all: "I'm a little Jew immigrant belonging to the world".Argentina

Doubtlessly the most famous Mexican movie star, María Félix created a larger-than-life character: herself. La Doña, as the star was known after the character of her 1943 movie Doña Bárbara, starred in 47 movies, most of them forgettable except for her presence in them. More a star than an actress, she constructed an image of a tough woman, a sort of one-liner she-male that went beyond the traditional role of Latin American women. Her marriage to Agustín Lara the most popular Latin composer from the 30s to the 60s, was a great event itself. Her fame went beyond Mexico to Latin America, Spain, France and Italy. She always refused to learn English, so she never acted in any English language movie. That's the main reason why her fame was related almost exclusively to Latin countries. After her last film, she was linked to a number of film projects, but never came back to the screen. Her last performance was on a Mexican historic soap opera, in 1970.Mexico

Isela Vega was born in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico on November 5, 1939. The young beauty was named Princess of the 1957 Carnaval in Hermosillo, and parlayed that into work as a model. She also had some success as a singer before turning to acting. (Her composition "Bennie's Song" was used in Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974), which features her singing.)
She made her film debut in the Pedro Armendáriz movie Verano violento (1960). From her beginning in small roles in Mexican films in the early 1960s, her career grew and Isela became very popular as a sex symbol in the late 1960s. (She would appear nude in a multi-page feature in Playboy Magazine's July 1974 issue.) In addition to her Mexican films, TV shows, and stage appearances, she also worked in a number of foreign films, most famously in Sam Peckinpah's Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974), for which she received a Best Actress Ariel Award nomination in 1975. (Previously, Vega had been nominated for a Best Actress Ariel for her turn in Las reglas del juego (1971) in 1972.) She had made her United States film debut the year previously in The Deadly Trackers (1973) (the U.S.-Mexico horror cheapie Fear Chamber (1968) doesn't really count) and continued to appear occasionally in small parts in American films and TV until the late 1990s.
In addition to her work as an actress, Vega produced, wrote and directed Lovers of the Lord of the Night (1986), and has written and produced other films. She has a son whose father is Alberto Vázquez, and a daughter (Shaula, an actress) whose father is Jorge Luke.Mexico

Libertad Lamarque was born November 24, 1908 in Rosario, Argentina, the youngest of ten children of Gaudencio Lamarque, an Uruguayan tinsmith who was worked as a contortionist in her youth, and Josefa Bouza, a Spanish immigrant. Since her childhood, Libertad Lamarque demonstrated a great talent for the performance and also for the song. Her debut as actress was at 7 years old and at 12 she was pro. In 1922 the family Lamarque emigrated to Buenos Aires and she began to work in the theater. At 18, she recorded her first LP of tangos (popular music of Argentina), obtaining an immediate success and she married with Emilio Romero (the father of Mirtha, her only daughter), then she played the silent movie "Adios, Argentina" (1930) and "Tango" (1933), which was, by the way, the first sound movie filmed in Argentina, and during the next 65 years all her works were starring with her name. In 1945 Libertad Lamarque was already known as an excellent dramatic actress and singer of tangos, boleros and folkloric songs of Latin America and she was received the nickname of "La Novia de América" (The Bride of the Americas) and also she even stood out as writer (she wrote the script of "Ayúdame a vivir"). However, not everything was happiness: her first husband died after their divorce and she lived an unpleasant incident with the (in this time) actress Eva Duarte (known after as Eva Perón, the famous Argentinean First Lady know nowadays simply as Evita) while they filmed "La cabalgata del circo." So, Libertad Lamarque (like other Argentinean artists of the time), suffered a non-official veto to her movies and while she was in tour for Latin America, she and her second (and last) husband, Alfredo Malerba settled in Mexico and there continued her very successful career, although in 1960 she returned to Argentina to make a movie. During her very extensive career, Libertad Lamarque filmed 65 movies (21 in Argentina, 43 in Mexico and 1 in Spain) and 6 soap operas, recorded more than 800 songs and many musicals and made many theatrical pieces; however, she says: "I am very lazy". When she is not acting or in shows, Lamarque lives between Miami, Florida (where she resides since 1996 with her personal assistant, Irene López) and Buenos Aires, Argentina where she visits her family (daughter, son-in-law, 5 grandsons and 10 great-grandchildren). Libertad Lamarque assures that doesn't have intentions of retiring of the show business: "I will continue working while I have a good pulse to makeup myself" she said.Mexico

Carmen Miranda was born Maria do Carmo Miranda da Cunha on February 9, 1909, near Porto, Portugal, in the town of Marco de Canavezes. Not long after her birth her family moved to Brazil, where her father was involved in the produce business. The family settled in the then-capital city of Rio de Janeiro. ' After leaving school, Carmen got a job at a local store, and often began singing on the job. Before long she was discovered and got a singing job on a local radio station. She ultimately got a recording contract with RCA. By 1928 she was a genuine superstar in Brazil. As with other popular singers of the era, she eventually made her way into the film world. She made her debut in the Brazilian documentary A Voz do Carnaval (1933). Two years later she appeared in her first feature film, Alô, Alô, Brasil (1935).
However. it was Estudantes (1935) that seemed to solidify Carmen in the minds of the Brazilian movie audiences. Now they realized she could act as well as sing. Although there was three years between "Alo, Alo Carnaval" and Banana-da-Terra (1939), Carmen continued to churn out musical hits in Brazil. The latter film would be the last in her home country.
In late 1939 Carmen arrived, with much fanfare in the press, in New York City. She was now ready to capture Americans' hearts with her talent. She appeared in some musical revues on Broadway and, just as everyone thought, was a huge hit. In 1940 Carmen was signed to appear in the Twentieth Century-Fox production Down Argentine Way (1940), with Betty Grable and Don Ameche. The only complaint that critics had was the fact that Carmen was not on the screen enough.
In 1941 she was, again, teamed with Ameche in addition to Alice Faye in That Night in Rio (1941). The film was extremely popular with the theater patrons. Her unique songs went a long way in making her popular. It was after Week-End in Havana (1941) that American cartoon artists began to cash in on Carmen's ever-growing popularity. In the 1930s and 1940s cartoons were sometimes shown as a prelude to whatever feature film was showing. Sure enough, the cartoon version of Carmen came wriggling across the screen, complete with her trademark fruit hat and wide, toothy grin.
In 1942 Carmen starred in Springtime in the Rockies (1942) with Betty Grable and Cesar Romero, both of whom she had worked with before. It was shortly after this that America began adopting her style of dress as the latest fad. 1944 saw her in three films: Something for the Boys (1944), Four Jills in a Jeep (1944) and Greenwich Village (1944). The first two did well at the box-office, but the last one left a lot to be desired. It was her last busy year in film. Carmen made one film each in 1945, '46, '47 and '48. After that she didn't make a film for two years, until Nancy Goes to Rio (1950), a production for MGM. Once again didn't make a film for several years, returning with Scared Stiff (1953).
She did stay busy, singing on the nightclub circuit and appearing on the relatively new medium of television. However, "Scared Stiff" was her final performance on the silver screen. On August 4, 1955, she suffered a heart attack, although she didn't realize it at the time, during a video taping of The Jimmy Durante Show (1954). She went home after attending a party.
Early the next morning, on August 5, Carmen suffered a fatal heart attack. She was just 46 years old. Her body was flown to her adopted country of Brazil, where her death was declared a period of national mourning.Brazil

1 cinematography credit.- Zulema Esther Gonzalez Borbon was born in Buenos Aires on October 17, 1920. She began working as a model when she was in her teens and, at the same time, she became an extra in cheap movies. She was given more important roles in a modest studio called EFA-Establecimientos Filmadores Argentinos, but then, all of a sudden and thanks to her role in Stella (1943), she reached stardom. A beautiful, tall blonde, her talent was very limited but people did not want to see her acting. They paid their tickets to see that image. She began a relationship with director Luis César Amadori in 1941 and became one of the stars of Argentina Sono Film. After the huge success of God Bless You (1948) (aka God Reward You), star and director got married and both became co-owners of Sono Film. Mr. and Mrs. Amadori enjoyed a happy time under the first two Peron governments. They made movies in Mexico in the 1950s, but after the 1955 coup, they left Argentina and flew to Spain. Both went on working there. Moreno excelled in a movie called La noche y el alba (1958) (aka The Night and the Dawn) and showed she had learned her craft. Unfortunately, she decided to quit cinema when she was 40 years old.
In 1965, she was offered a part in an Italian-Argentine co-production starring Vittorio Gassman, but she did not bother to answer. In the 1970s, the couple returned to Argentina -- both were owners of the Maipo theater. In 1977, Mr. Amadori died, and she became sort of a recluse. Director 'Maria Luisa Bemberg' and producer Lita Stantic offered her a role in Camila (1984), but she turned it down. She died in Buenos Aires in 1999 and is still remembered as the symbol of an era.Argentina

- The legendary "granny of Mexican cinema" began her movie career when she was a 22-year-old teacher in a nun's school for girls. One day, young Sara's attention was attracted to a small building in downtown Mexico City. Inside it was Azteca Films, one of the very first Mexican film production companies, about to produce its first feature: Alma de sacrificio (1917). The leading lady was stage actress turned film producer (and writer, actress, editor and, maybe director) Mimí Derba. After some screening tests, young Sara was offered a contract. She accepted although she didn't say a word in her college until many months after. Her early experiences in movies lead her to a career in stage. She only made one film between 1918 and 1933. She returned to the screen in Death Flight (1934) and began a very long career of 148 films. Almost from the beginning, Sara García specialized in portraying mothers and grandmas, hence her nickname. This specialization began when she dared to remove her entire teeth to get the role of a granny in Allá en el Trópico (1940). After that tremendous tour-de-force her entire career, with very few exceptions, was devoted to this kind of roles. She co-starred with almost the entire cast of Mexican movie stars from the '30s to the '70s. Her films are still popular because they're on TV very often.Mexico

Althought most of her career was before the cameras, Mimí Derba is better remembered as the first woman director in Mexico (and perhaps in Latin America). On 1917, when Mexican screens were filled by italian melodramas of "divas", Derba organized one of the very first Mexican production companies: Azteca Films. Practically without previous experience on screen, the actress produced, wrote and performed in two box-office hits: Alma de sacrificio (1917) and En defensa propia (1917). The success of those films persuated her to take the director's chair in Tigresa, La (1917). There's a legend that Azteca Films was a cover-up for General Pablo González, a minister in the cabinet of President Venustiano Carranza and Derba's lover in those years. González was accused of being the mastermind behind a famous gang of robbers called La Banda del Automóvil Gris (The Grey Car Gang) whose assaults were very famous in the Mexico City of 1915. Those events inspired the famous Mexican episodic film Automóvil Gris, El (1919). The mysterious of the source of the incoming money for producing Derba's films was never discovered, but it is certain that, after the scandal of involving González with the gang, activities ceased on Azteca Films and the career of the first woman Mexican director was over. Derba continued acting and made a strong career as a supporting actress in a great number of famous Mexican films. One of her most notorious roles was the bitter grandmother of Evita Muñoz 'Chachita' in Ustedes los ricos (1947).Mexico

Andrea Palma became the first diva of Mexican cinema, when she appeared in the tragic leading role of Rosario, the prostitute of The Woman of the Port (1934), one of the iconic films of the "cine de pecadoras" genre that became a staple in the Mexican film industry. Andrea was the daughter of Julio Bracho Zuloaga, a wealthy land and textile factory owner who lost all his possessions during the Mexican revolution. Mr. Bracho moved his family to Mexico City, where Andrea became interested in theater during her school years, and later in fashion and hat design. She entered the hat business in the early 1920s and opened her own shop, called Casa Andrea (from where she took her first name as an actress, adding the last name of one of her clients, the elegant Mrs. Palma.) Known in the theater world, she had her first opportunity replacing her friend Isabela Corona when the actress gave birth to a child. She closed the shop and remained with the theater company and traveled to the United States, where she stayed until the early 1930s, helped by a young and struggling Cecil Kellaway, having small roles in the films of her cousins Dolores Del Río and Ramon Novarro and as hat and make-up consultant for Marlene Dietrich, when the German diva arrived in Hollywood. When she was called from Mexico and offered the part of Rosario, it was Dietrich's style that inspired her in creating her character. The languid, stylized and slim figure of Rosario stood out in a milieu of drunken sailors and ordinary prostitutes. The Woman of the Port (1934) became an instant success and Andrea Palma became a superstar, practically out of nowhere. In the succeeding years, she was much in demand: her next movie was completely opposite to Rosario, playing the famous 17th century poet, playwright and nun Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz; she returned to Hollywood to make two "Latin film", took a four-year break doing theater and in 1943 she was directed by her brother Julio Bracho in the classic melodrama Another Dawn (1943). She played Julieta, a frustrated wife during the day and a prostitute during the night, and it is considered by many the best role and film in her career. After other movies, including a Tarzan vehicle, starring Johnny Weissmuller, in which she played the mother of actress Linda Christian, Andrea went to Spain to perform in a play and during rehearsals she met actor 'Enrique Díaz 'Indiano'' who became her only husband. When Andrea returned to Mexico, she was no longer considered a young leading lady and became specialized in character roles. In the 1950s she was in two classic "pecadoras" productions and huge commercial successes starring Cuban superstar Ninón Sevilla and directed by Alberto Gout, playing a mean brothel owner in The Adventuress (1950) and a suffering wife in Sensualidad (1951); and she worked with Luis Buñuel in The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz (1955). Although she worked in the Mexican film industry until the 70s, Andrea Palma concentrated in television and theater since the late 1950s, including her weekly appearance as hostess of the popular series "La novela semanal", based on literature classics, until her retirement in 1979 due to illness. Her last role was besides her niece and goddaughter Diana Bracho in the series Ángel Guerra (1979).Mexico

Actress, singer, director, producer, musician and writer, Bibi Ferreira was considered the Grand Dame of Brazilian stage. She sang, acted, directed and produced during her 72 year career. Born Abigail Izquierdo Ferreira on June 1, 1922, in Rio de Janeiro, her father was actor Procópio Ferreira and her mother was Spanish ballerina Aída Izquierdo.
Bibi was first seen on stage at just 24 days old, replacing a doll in the play Manhãs de Sol (Sunny Mornings) by Oduvaldo Viana. As a young child Bibi traveled with her mother throughout Latin America as part of the Companhia Velasco troupe of Spanish revues. At age three she was already singing and dancing on stage, becoming known as "la niña de Velasco". Her professional stage debut was at age 18 in the Italian play La Locandiera by Carlo Goldoni. Five years later she started her own theater company, Companhia de Comédias Bibi Ferreira.
During the 1950s she took her company to Portugal and performed throughout the country for five years. In the 1960s and 1970s Bibi hosted several television shows, such as Brasil 60, Brasil 61, Bibi ao Vivo, Bibi Especial, Brasil 78, and Brasil 79, just to name a few.
