1. 1408 (2007)
PG-13 | 104 min | Drama, Horror
A man who specializes in debunking paranormal occurrences checks into the fabled room 1408 in the Dolphin Hotel. Soon after settling in, he confronts genuine terror.
Votes: 230,486 | Gross: $71.99M
A well done ghost story with a great ending. There's not too many jump-out-of-your-seat scares, but placing yourself in the main character's shoes is scary enough.
2. A Haunted House (2013)
R | 86 min | Comedy, Fantasy
Malcolm and Kisha move into their dream home, but soon learn a demon also resides there. When Kisha becomes possessed, Malcolm - determined to keep his sex life on track - turns to a priest, a psychic, and a team of ghost-busters for help.
Votes: 38,027 | Gross: $40.04M
Okay, so this isn't a horror movie, but it's funny all the same. A lot of people didn't have good things to say about this movie; I think it is pretty hilarious. If you're into the mindless type of comedy, then this movie is definitely for you.
3. All Hallows' Eve (2013)
Unrated | 83 min | Horror, Thriller
A babysitter finds a VHS tape which features various sinister murders performed by a psychotic clown.
I'm deathly scared of clowns, so if the main villain was anything but a clown, it probably wouldn't be as good. There are 3 sub-stories wrapped into 1 big story. The 1st and 3rd story are quite good, but the 2nd one is quite terrible. You won't be missing out if you skip that one. I did get chills from the beginning of the 1st story though.
4. American Psycho (2000)
R | 102 min | Crime, Drama
A wealthy New York investment banking executive, Patrick Bateman, hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he delves deeper into his violent, hedonistic fantasies.
Votes: 400,582 | Gross: $15.07M
Christian Bale shines in this role. On the outside, he is a perfect version of a typical American yuppie; on the inside, he is a psychopath who is slowly losing his grip on reality. A great watch.
5. Black Christmas (1974)
R | 98 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller
During their Christmas break, a group of sorority girls are stalked by a stranger.
Votes: 24,905 | Gross: $4.05M
The creep factor is very high in this movie. The fact that it takes place where you're supposed to feel the safest, makes it all the more creepier.
6. Burning Bright (2010)
PG-13 | 86 min | Drama, Horror, Thriller
A thriller centered on a young woman and her autistic little brother who are trapped in a house with a ravenous tiger during a hurricane.
Usually, I find movies with killer animals on the cheesy side. But this movie is actually very good. The tiger is real, which is a huge plus, and the characters are trapped in a small house (it seems small with a huge tiger in it) with it. That could make anyone terrified.
7. Kuchisake-onna (2007)
Not Rated | 90 min | Horror
A suburban town in Japan is the victim of what is supposedly just an urban legend, a woman's spirit with a horribly disfigured face who is intent on kidnapping children for unknown reasons.
Asian horror is definitely the best type of horror out there. If I was making an infinite list, I would probably put most of them on here. This is one of the scarier ones. The classic long, black haired ghost just doesn't get old. Add a clown-like smile to it, and you've got yourself a horror movie.
8. Citadel (I) (2012)
R | 84 min | Drama, Horror, Thriller
An agoraphobic father teams up with a renegade priest to save his daughter from the clutches of a gang of twisted feral children who committed an act of violence against his family years earlier.
This is one of my top favorites. The feral children are so creepy...the way they walk, and the fact that you can't see their faces, just adds to it. I highly recommend this movie.
9. Come Out and Play (I) (2012)
R | 87 min | Horror
A couple take a vacation to a remote island - their last holiday together before they become parents. Soon after their arrival, they notice that no adults seem to be present - an observation that quickly presents a nightmarish reality.
Finally, the children are evil! I love that this movie takes place on an island. So, you can't just get in a car and drive away. The kids are extremely psychotic in this movie, and they play it very well.
10. Creep (I) (2004)
R | 85 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller
Trapped in a London subway station, a woman who's being pursued by a potential attacker heads into the unknown labyrinth of tunnels beneath the city's streets.
Europe has done it again...another awesome horror movie. This time it takes place in a subway station. The atmosphere of this makes for a great horror movie....dark, quiet, few humans around, and something hunting you...perfect!
11. Dead Silence (2007)
R | 89 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller
A young widower returns to his hometown to search for answers to his wife's murder, which may be linked to the ghost of a murdered ventriloquist.
Votes: 74,639 | Gross: $16.81M
Tons of dolls...creepy old woman....nuff' said?
12. The Devil's Rejects (2005)
R | 107 min | Crime, Horror
The murderous, backwoods Firefly family take to the road to escape a vengeful police force which is not afraid of being as ruthless as their target.
Votes: 82,052 | Gross: $17.04M
Rob Zombie is a great writer and director. His horror movies are so twisted and deranged. To top it off, Sid Haig, Bill Moseley, and Sherri-Moon Zombie make great psychopaths.
13. Evil Dead (2013)
R | 91 min | Fantasy, Horror, Thriller
Five friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods.
Votes: 138,617 | Gross: $54.24M
The storyline is different from the original, but the movie is still great. The demons are so well done, it was a bit scary to watch on a big screen. A lot of blood, a lot of profanity, a lot of death...how can you go wrong?
14. Funny Games (2007)
R | 111 min | Crime, Drama, Horror
Two psychopathic young men take a family hostage in their cabin.
Votes: 78,083 | Gross: $1.29M
Michael Pitt shines as the villain in this movie. Two unassuming preppy boys terrorize a family over the course of the night. You'll surely never look at golf clubs the same again!
15. Ginger Snaps (2000)
Not Rated | 108 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror
Two death-obsessed sisters, outcasts in their suburban neighborhood, must deal with the tragic consequences when one of them is bitten by a deadly werewolf.
Votes: 36,023 | Gross: $0.00M
I'm not really into werewolf movies, but this one is fantastic. It centers around a high school girl going through some extreme change, not only with puberty, but other things as well. The characters work very well together as a dysfunctional family.
16. Grave Encounters (2011)
Not Rated | 92 min | Horror
For their ghost hunting reality show, a production crew locks themselves inside an abandoned mental hospital that's supposedly haunted - and it might prove to be all too true.
An awesome footage movie. This one does the scares so well. It takes place in a dark, abandoned, and haunted mental hospital. The deaths in this movie are terrific, and there are plenty of jump-out-of-your-seat scares.
17. House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
R | 89 min | Horror
Two young couples traveling across the backwoods of Texas searching for urban legends of murder end up as prisoners of a bizarre and sadistic backwater family of serial killers.
Votes: 65,730 | Gross: $12.63M
Another terrific Rob Zombie movie...a prequel to The Devil's Rejects. I think that this movie is a little more messed up. Every character who is a part of the deranged family, shines in their role.
18. Inside (2007)
R | 82 min | Horror
Four months after the death of her husband, a woman on the brink of motherhood is tormented in her home by a strange woman who wants her unborn baby.
A messed up and cringe worthy movie. A psychotic woman, who wants another woman's unborn baby. In the beginning part, before the psycho starts terrorizing, is super creepy. A definite nail biter.
19. Lovely Molly (2011)
R | 99 min | Drama, Horror
Newlywed Molly moves into her deceased father's house in the countryside, where painful memories soon begin to haunt her.
The night scenes in this movie are the best. Molly's husband is usually working, so she is almost always by herself in a big farmhouse. That's a definite prelude to scary.
20. Mirrors (I) (2008)
R | 110 min | Horror, Mystery
An ex-cop and his family are the target of an evil force that is using mirrors as a gateway into their home.
Votes: 93,030 | Gross: $30.69M
The idea of this movie is pretty brilliant. Killer reflections. The deaths are gory and horrific. It will make you want to cover up your mirrors for awhile.
21. Orphan (2009)
R | 123 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller
A husband and wife who recently lost their baby adopt a 9 year-old girl who is not nearly as innocent as she claims to be.
Votes: 162,463 | Gross: $41.60M
A great movie with a twist ending.
22. Paranormal Activity (2007)
R | 86 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller
After moving into a suburban home, a couple becomes increasingly disturbed by a nightly demonic presence.
Votes: 199,133 | Gross: $107.92M
A great, low-budget horror film. The scares are fairly simple, yet consistent and effective.
23. Paranormal Activity 2 (2010)
R | 91 min | Horror
After experiencing what they think are a series of "break-ins", a family sets up security cameras around their home, only to realize that the events unfolding before them are more sinister than they seem.
Votes: 88,843 | Gross: $84.75M
In my opinion, this one is slightly better than the first one. I really liked the ending, and I like how they all tie in to each other.
24. Paranormal Activity 3 (2011)
R | 83 min | Horror
In 1988, young sisters Katie and Kristi befriend an invisible entity who resides in their home.
Votes: 82,204 | Gross: $104.01M
Technically, this movie would be the first in the series. The ending is super scary and unexpected. This one is right up there with the 2nd one in my books.
25. Paranormal Activity 4 (2012)
R | 88 min | Horror
It has been five years since the disappearance of Katie and Hunter, and a suburban family witness strange events in their neighborhood when a woman and a mysterious child move in.
Votes: 55,392 | Gross: $53.92M
The 4th installment in the series isn't as good, but it's still an enjoyable watch. There aren't as many scares; the few that are there can still get you jumping pretty good. I think that all of these movies have great endings.
26. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014)
R | 84 min | Horror, Thriller
When a young man becomes the target of a malevolent entity, he must uncover its true intentions before it takes complete control of him.
Votes: 35,013 | Gross: $32.46M
I like this one because it's different from the others. It doesn't take place in a rich neighborhood, or in a big house. I think that a dilapidated apartment with a creepy basement has a much scarier pretense than a big house....and it definitely does.
27. Paranormal Entity (2009 Video)
Not Rated | 88 min | Horror, Mystery
Prepare to see what is allegedly the "actual footage" of the supernatural events leading up to the 2008 murder of Samantha Finley. Released against the wishes of the authorities, this D.V.D... See full summary »
There aren't too many good reviews on this movie, but I enjoyed this movie quite a bit. There are some good scares, and a fairly good ending.
28. Priest (2011)
PG-13 | 87 min | Action, Fantasy, Horror
A priest disobeys church law to track down the vampires who kidnapped his niece.
Votes: 103,605 | Gross: $29.14M
An awesome vampire movie. The best part of this movie, are the vampires. They don't look like a typical vampire would...they're really well done. The storyline is great, and there's a lot of good action.
29. Quarantine (2008)
R | 89 min | Horror, Thriller
A television reporter and her cameraman are trapped inside a building quarantined by the CDC, after the outbreak of a mysterious virus which turns humans into bloodthirsty killers.
Votes: 62,141 | Gross: $31.69M
The American version of [REC], and another great footage movie. Jennifer Carpenter does really well as a reporter covering the incident. I like this movie because this is one of the few that doesn't have your typical happy ending.
30. [Rec] (2007)
R | 78 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller
A television reporter and cameraman follow emergency workers into a dark apartment building and are quickly locked inside with something terrifying.
A great Spanish horror. This one is scarier than Quarantine. The monsters seem wilder and more feral in this one.
31. Red Eye (2005)
PG-13 | 85 min | Mystery, Thriller
A woman is kidnapped by a stranger on a routine flight. Threatened by the potential murder of her father, she is pulled into a plot to assist her captor in offing a politician.
Votes: 100,657 | Gross: $57.89M
32. Silent Hill (2006)
R | 125 min | Adventure, Horror, Mystery
A woman, Rose, goes in search for her adopted daughter within the confines of a strange, desolate town called Silent Hill.
Votes: 192,760 | Gross: $46.98M
I'm a huge fan of all the Silent Hill games, so I loved this movie. It integrated the first 3 games into this movie. The monsters looked so realistic; they were so closely related to the game, which is awesome.
33. Silent Hill: Revelation (2012)
R | 95 min | Adventure, Drama, Horror
When her adoptive father disappears, Sharon Da Silva is drawn into a strange and terrifying alternate reality that holds answers to the horrific nightmares that have plagued her since childhood.
Votes: 54,157 | Gross: $17.53M
If you didn't get to see this in 3D in theatres, you definitely missed out! The monsters are even better in this one; Pyramid head in 3D...scary!
34. Stay Alive (2006)
PG-13 | 85 min | Fantasy, Horror, Sci-Fi
For a group of teens, the answer to the mysterious death of their old friend lies within the world of an online video game based on the true story of an ancient noblewoman known as the Blood Countess.
Votes: 27,314 | Gross: $23.09M
I'm a video game nerd, so I really enjoyed this movie. It made me want to play the game that was created in the movie. The movie did really well with mixing fantasy and reality together.
35. Stitches (I) (2012)
R | 86 min | Comedy, Horror
A clown comes back from the dead to haunt those who took his life during a fatal party mishap.
Stitches makes clowns seem not so terrible! At least for me, anyways. It's a story about a clown out for revenge on a group of kids who accidentally killed him. The deaths are humorous, and the clown's one-liners are hilarious.
36. Teeth (I) (2007)
R | 94 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Horror
Still a stranger to her own body, a high school student discovers she has a physical advantage when she becomes the object of male violence.
Votes: 37,127 | Gross: $0.35M
A movie that will make all the boys cringe! I love it because it's a different kind of horror movie that makes you think twice about messing with girls.
37. The Blair Witch Project (1999)
R | 81 min | Horror, Mystery
Three film students vanish after traveling into a Maryland forest to film a documentary on the local Blair Witch legend, leaving only their footage behind.
Votes: 205,988 | Gross: $140.54M
A simple story with plenty of scares. I liked watching the campers transform from having fun to desperation, as they slowly realize that there is no way out. The ending is really great.
38. The Caller (2011)
R | 92 min | Thriller
A young divorcee is getting her life back together by moving into an apartment. But what will she do when a strange person repeatedly calls her, and threatens to change her new life around?
Not really a scary movie, but the story is done so well, that it almost seems plausible that it could happen.
39. The Children (2008)
R | 84 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller
A relaxing Christmas vacation turns into a terrifying fight for survival as the children begin to turn on their parents.
I just love the evil children movies. They always seem to be crazier than the evil adults. The setting for this movie is enhanced, since it takes place in an isolated house.
40. The Conjuring (2013)
R | 112 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller
Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse.
Votes: 353,836 | Gross: $137.40M
One of the best, if not the best, horror movie. There is very little blood and gore, and there is no sex or nudity at all. This movie gets by on scares alone. This one is a must-see.
41. The Descent (2005)
R | 99 min | Adventure, Horror, Thriller
A caving expedition goes horribly wrong, as the explorers become trapped and ultimately pursued by a strange breed of predators.
Votes: 172,328 | Gross: $26.02M
A superb underground cave monster movie. It's terrifying to think of being trapped in a dark cave with flesh-eating monsters.
42. The Evil Dead (1981)
NC-17 | 85 min | Horror
Five friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons.
Votes: 158,133 | Gross: $2.40M
A classic horror. Yes, the demons and deaths are pretty cheesy, but it's one of those movies that's always enjoyable to watch. No matter what decade you're in.
43. The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)
PG-13 | 119 min | Drama, Horror, Thriller
A lawyer takes on a negligent homicide case involving a priest who performed an exorcism on a young girl.
Votes: 105,427 | Gross: $75.07M
Terrific! The possession of Emily is so frightening. Jennifer Carpenter does an amazing job of being possessed; it was so believable. This movie mostly takes place in a courtroom, but the flashback story is put together so well.
44. The Loved Ones (2009)
R | 84 min | Horror, Thriller
When Brent turns down his classmate Lola's invitation to the prom, she concocts a wildly violent plan for revenge.
Be careful who your prom date is! This one is twisted beyond words. The kinds of torture that goes on in this film is so depraved, you're guaranteed to be closing your eyes most of the time.
45. The Pact (II) (2012)
R | 89 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller
As a woman struggles to come to grips with her past in the wake of her mother's death and the disappearance of her sister, an unsettling presence emerges in her childhood home.
A creepy "skeletons in the closet" type of movie. The Pact has a good storyline and some jumpy scares. If you didn't enjoy most of the movie, you will definitely enjoy the ending.
46. The Purge (I) (2013)
R | 85 min | Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller
A wealthy family are held hostage for harboring the target of a murderous syndicate during the Purge, a 12-hour period in which any and all crime is legal.
Votes: 163,640 | Gross: $64.47M
A unique storyline. It's scary to think that something like The Purge, where anything goes, could be possible. It's easy to sympathize with the characters because in this case, you're allowed to do anything to protect yourself.
47. The Uninvited (2009)
PG-13 | 87 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery
Anna returns home after a stint in a mental hospital, but her recovery is jeopardized by her cruel stepmother and ghastly visions of her dead mother.
Votes: 67,962 | Gross: $28.57M
Well-written, great acting, and an unexpected ending.
48. The Woman (I) (2011)
R | 101 min | Horror
When a successful country lawyer captures and attempts to "civilize" the last remaining member of a violent clan that has roamed the Northeast coast for decades, he puts the lives of his family in jeopardy.
Another one of my favorites. She seems to be the villain, but she is treated so poorly by her captors, that you're rooting for her in the end. And what an ending it is.
49. Wolf Creek (2005)
R | 99 min | Horror
Three backpackers stranded in the Australian outback are plunged in a hellish nightmare of insufferable torture by a sadistic psychopathic local.
Votes: 60,376 | Gross: $16.19M
Australia did well with this one. The villain is hilarious, as well as deranged. A perfect mixture.
50. You're Next (2011)
R | 95 min | Horror, Thriller
When the Davison family comes under attack during their wedding anniversary getaway, the gang of mysterious killers soon learns that one of the victims harbors a secret talent for fighting back.
Votes: 72,962 | Gross: $18.47M
The ending for this movie wasn't really that great, but the rest of the movie is really good, so I had to include it. The deaths are really gory, and the setting is creepy.
