TOP 250 BEST "Coming of Age, Young Love" movies from Quiltys' Lists 1-10/ Selected by Juicy

Clare Quilty has asked Juicy to recommend his top 250 favorite movies from the Quilty lists for those wishing to start their collection of "Coming of Age, Young Love" films.

This was incredibly hard as Juicy loves most of the over 1000 recommendations on Quiltys' "Coming of Age, Young Love" Lists. There are MANY amazing films that were not able to make it. These are Juicys' 250 favorites from Lists 1-10 and 25 films from the Quilty SPECIAL list.

Due to hard economic times, Juicy will note where to buy each film on dvd or blu-ray for the cheapest price. All movies listed can be found on dvd or blu-ray w/English subtitles at locations noted by Juicy under the comments for each product. Keep in mind, some of these movies are VERY RARE, and others may get discontinued, making the price skyrocket (ie. Fruit Is Swelling, Pups). Prices most likely will change. So far Juicy's choice for Best Picture at the Oscars, and this is fair as Juicy usually sees all the best pic noms. So far this IS the best. Have not seen Moonlight or a few others, yet. Juicy is fair on Oscars and will see all, if his opinion changes, will let you know. But so far none of them are meh. Really enjoyed most. LA LA Land, not sure I enjoyed, as much as respected (music is so amazing, as acting, as are the dreams that come true, and don't, like life.)

From Quilty - The question of "What is a child?" is at the heart of the world constructed by the Victorians and continues to be a pressing question today. As now, the "child" of the 19th century symbolized purity, innocence and asexuality, but at the same time was the subject of fantasy, obsession, and sexual desire. Drawing from a wide range of literary and non-literary texts, from books of manners to classic novels to erotica, Kincaid attempts to analyze the meanings of childhood in the Victorian era and to ask why contemporary society has a need to demonize paedophilia. Although Kincaid ultimately reduces paedophilia to a unitary phenomenon, he performs "a dazzling series of readings of Victorian such a way that the Victorians seem to read us and find us far less sophisticated and humane than we flatter ourselves for being."

From Quilty - "Shinoyama does something very special with his pubescent models -- and this one in particular, Japanese pop star Namaiki. Call it "ero-iconic portraiture." Though "Namaiki" apparently means "impertinent" in Japanese, there's very little of the modern edginess with which many photographers (like Shinoyama's friend, Nobuyoshi Araki) portray these potential subjects of desire. For Shinoyama, it's more quietude, contemplation and the mystery of beauty which brings delight.
Shinoyama, who has made his career photographing Japanese fashion models, is one of the most famous photographers in Japan today. He was one of the first photographers to break the "pubic hair" barrier in Japan, when in 1991 he published water fruit, which featured a famous Japanese actress. His books have sold over a million copies in Japan and he has been the recipient of many prizes, including Best New Photographer (The Japan Photo Critics Association, 1966); Photographer of the Year (Japan Photographic Society, 1970); New Talent Award (Japan Art Academy and Ministry of Education, Tokyo, 1973); and the 1973 Annual Prize of the Kodansha Publishing Company."

“ HHH" "From doktorfroyd - In this documentary style drama by Ernst Hofbauer, several vignettes explore the sexuality of youth, and recommend how parents should react to it. Hofbauer is best known for his participation in the infamous "Schulmädchen-Report" sexploitation films from the 70's, and although this is technically not part of that series, it's style and subject matter are the same: prented to be a message movie about teen sexuality while exploiting it to the max. "Frühreifen-Report" has less comedy and more outrageous content than most of its "Schulmädchen" counterparts, and is even more obscure. Wild, unabashedly inappropriate German sleaze at its best/worst including a shocking spanking segment not shown in the American release.

“ From Juicy: Awesome! For those of you that have seen, and are sick of, all the costume, CGI, and animated versions; get refreshed with this version! B/W, dark haired Alice. And you have to know the story (For instance, there is no bunny costume to let you know who the White Rabbit is). Make SURE to get this dvd with the directors commentary. It is one of the most interesting commentaries Juicy has ever listened to.

Best Description From Eugene Kim from Arlington, Virginia, USA: Beautifully filmed in a satiny black & white reminiscent of old photographs, this 1966 BBC adaptation of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" may displease purists for its less than conventional, as well as decidedly minimalist, approach. It's not a traditional rendering of Lewis Carroll, and doesn't pretend to be; there are no phantasmagoric sets or actors encased in over-sized costumes or big musical numbers or fancy photographic effects. The Alice of this production is a taciturn, stony-faced girl who is neither frightened nor fascinated by her experiences in Wonderland, which is mostly made up of the interiors and exteriors of old English mansions and houses. But in its unorthodox way, it brings Carroll's text to life in a way I don't recall experiencing in other adaptations of the Alice books.

It's apparent that in creating this alternative Alice, producer-director Jonathan Miller expects you to be already familiar with its source; he's evidently assuming you will recognize what he's chosen to leave in as well as leave out, as well as his re-imagined settings. Only a few of the actors are made to look anything like the characters in the Tenniel drawings, such as Leo McKern as the Duchess or Peter Cook as the Mad Hatter; you're basically on your own when it comes to spotting the White Rabbit or Caterpillar or Frog Footman, all of whom are dressed "normally" in period costumes. (Presenting the Carrollian characters as real people isn't a new idea; I recall a TV adaptation of Alice starring Kate Burton in which Humpty Dumpty was portrayed by an elderly man in a rocking chair.)

By tossing out entire scenes, characters and exchanges that were in the book, Miller gives us a sparer, edgier retelling of the Wonderland story, but doesn't stray too far from the original. Why such a sullen, passive Alice? My guess is, this is supposed to be an Alice who fully realizes that she's in a dream and treats her surroundings accordingly.

And so this Alice (played by a charming Anne-Marie Mallik) sits looking bored and disinterested during the Mad Tea Party. Other productions customarily play this scene with all kinds of manic energy, but in this film, the tea party is deliberately drawn out with long, open rhythms reminiscent of an Antonioni or Resnais film. (Alice's Adventures in Marienbad, anyone?) And seemingly for the first time, while I was listening to the Mad Hatter, the March Hare and the Dormouse prattle away, their nonsense started to make wonderful sense. It's easy enough for an actor to recite lines like, "What day of the month is it?," but here, the performers sound like they really mean what they say (and say what they mean).

That same emphasis on dialogue is apparent in the beach scene with the Mock Turtle, played by Sir John Gielgud, and the Gryphon, played by Malcolm Muggeridge. The Mock Turtle's words never sounded so delightful to me before, and thank goodness Gielgud didn't have to deliver them through some huge Mock Turtle mask. This scene also provides one of the movie's most striking images, of the Mock Turtle, the Gryphon and Alice walking barefoot along the shore, with Gielgud softly singing the "Lobster Quadrille" a cappella.

For those seeking a more conventional book-to-film translation of "Alice," I would suggest the 1972 British movie musical starring Fiona Fullerton, complete with elaborate sets and costumes and velvety color photography and songs. Although it was slammed by the relatively few reviewers who saw it, I thought it nicely conveyed a dreamlike quality of its own, especially in its transitions - I found it much more enjoyable than the 1933 Paramount movie or the 1951 Disney animated feature.

But if you think you've had your fill of Alice movies and TV shows, then I urge you to try this one - I think it makes Lewis Carroll sound fresh all over again. (There's very interesting musical accompaniment by Ravi Shankar.) And for a wonderfully acted movie about the real- life Alice Liddell Hargreaves and Lewis Carroll, I urge you to see "Dreamchild" - but that's another review.

“ HH" "From CVMC - Certainly one of the weirder films to hit planet earth! Think of a philosophical historian doing acid and you might get an idea of the mind behind this one.

It all starts out in the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve there eating the forbidden fruit, soon after driven from paradise, holding Lucifer to his promise to reveal knowledge to them. The couple is then placed under a spell, travels forward in time, finds themselves involved in several significant "historical" events through time. A surrealistic odyssey and the cast is entirely made up of children roughly five to twelve years of age. Serge Leroy made a very interesting movie in 1975 :"La Traque" .It was followed by a more conventional effort :Les Passagers". "Attention Les Enfants Regardent" is some kind of "Home Alone" for adults, based on an American best-seller which did not interest anybody on the other side of the pond..Delon made a lot of rubbish in the seventies (with notable exceptions of course: "Traitement De Choc" "Monsieur Klein" and "The Assassination of Trotsky" ) but he made this one a winner. He portrays a shady man ,who knows what the children did (that summer?) .And what they did is simply bring about their nanny's death.

This extremely impressive, highly intelligent and equally realistic film follows a 30-something year old woman and a boy (Olivier Gueritee) of roughly fourteen as they gradually form a romantic and sexual relationship which eventually disrupts when our young hero decides he is more interested in his female peers. Perhaps the best film ever made about intergenerational relationships; highly recommended!

From Juicy - The first 15 minutes are extremely off-putting with super shaky camera work. Get past that and you will have an enjoyable experience as this is one of the few films to tell this story from a female perspective.

With it's incest subject matter and scenes of horror, "Daddy" could easily qualify for one or more categories, but because its style is so extremely bizzare, it just has to be classified as "Weird"!

A classic coming of age tale set in the German countryside about a pair of teen lovers named Georg (Hans-Peter Dahm) and Barbara (Julia Brendler). They flirt, fall in love, and eventually go all the way. There's trouble in paradise though when it is discovered that Georg and Barbara are having sex. Because Barbara is underage, and because they don't like Georg's family, Barbara's parents press charges and the two young lovers' fate is decided in court. "Verbotene Liebe" is beautifully shot, and features outstanding perfomances. Julia Brendler was only 14 when she starred in this movie, but the nude scenes with co-star Hans-Peter Dahm are very tastefully done.

From Juicy - Really Cool! In Ireland in the 1960's, teacher Peig got tired of telling fairy tales to her class due to her own disenchantment with life. So she told Bible stories, heads chopped off and all, full of "shock and holy awe". She thought it would be fun to have the kids tell the stories and record them. She told them it was for the "camera people" and they would be on T.V.. The kids were super excited and the stories reflect such a great slice of childhood life recorded in time! Little did they know the tapes would be "unearthed" 40 years later and would become a huge sensation in Ireland. Then, a film company got a hold of some of them and made animation to the kids story, going on to win a Academy Award nomination.
