- DirectorJoe WrightStarsKeira KnightleyMatthew MacfadyenBrenda BlethynSparks fly when spirited Elizabeth Bennet meets single, rich, and proud Mr. Darcy. But Mr. Darcy reluctantly finds himself falling in love with a woman beneath his class. Can each overcome their own pride and prejudice?Pride & Prejudice is one of my favourite books, written by an inspiration of mine: Jane Austen. She wrote in a time when the man had the dominant role in the writing industry; how times have changed. The two main characters Elizabeth and Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy are one of literatures best loved romantic couples: this film gives it justice although it will never match the book. I personally feel that portraying a classic novel like pride & prejudice in a film can be very hard for a number of reasons. Some adaptions are brilliant while others fail to be good and don’t meet the expectations of the readers: the adaptions can either go very well or very bad. In this instance I believe that this is a fantastic adaption; the actors where picked very well and the film keeps you captivated with humour and the real essence of what the book is about. I was disappointed however that a few scenes had been changed and some characters didn’t make it into the film. Overall I believe this was a modern take on the classic novel that was successful and elegant. A must see if you like period drama and are a fan of classic novels. SET IN GEORGIAN ENGLAND
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsJeremy IrvineEmily WatsonDavid ThewlisA young farm boy enlists to serve in World War I after his beloved horse is sold to the cavalry. His hopeful journey takes him out of England and onto the front lines as the war rages on.The war horse is a fantastic film, I haven’t been able to read the book yet but hope to soon. We meet characters from both sides of the war and the people caught in the middle. We see the harsh reality of modern technology in gun warfare meeting the old war tactics with the cavalry: the devastating consequences when they come against each other. This is a film that is heart wrenchingly sad but beautiful, we progress through times in the war with joey (our war horse) and the hardship he faced as a horse; we see the people he meets who show kindness and the consequences of desertion and the brief truce in no-man’s land to free a living being that was trapped. we also see the wrongs on both sides of the war: young teenagers signing up to fight a man’s war, the inhumane way they treated animals, the sad loss of friends on the Somme and the introduction of tanks at the end of the war. The main factor is the friendship between a horse and a boy that never died since the world war one had begun until they meet again. This is a sad film that explores war and the hardship that both sides faced but has a happy ending after so much loss. This is a film that shouldn’t be missed. SET FROM 1914-1918
