A lame thriller, I hardly remember the storyline...

Director: Clint Eastwood | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Josh Hamilton

Votes: 133,603 | Gross: $37.31M

One of the worst Clint Eastwood movies as a director. The man is old, and this movie's an old's one. Good actors, but a weak script and terrible make-up kills the project.

3. From Up on Poppy Hill (2011)

Votes: 51,957 | Gross: $1.00M

A nice Ghibli movie. Certainly not the best, but Goro Miyazaki does his work well, and it's a pleasure to see this kind of movies in theater.

Director: David Fincher | Stars: Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgård

Votes: 494,636 | Gross: $102.52M

Fincher does it again : even if the movie is very close to the books and the first adaptation, his cast and visual qualities enlighten it all. A very good movie, I just hope they won't chose some B's director for the sequel...

5. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011)

PG-13 | 129 min | Action, Adventure, Mystery

48 Metascore

Detective Sherlock Holmes is on the trail of criminal mastermind Professor Moriarty, who is carrying out a string of random crimes across Europe.

Director: Guy Ritchie | Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Jared Harris, Rachel McAdams

Votes: 480,260 | Gross: $186.85M

A lazy sequel : weak script, a strange choice for Moriarty... Guy Ritchie should have avoided this project, and give it to a motivated director.

6. The Descendants (2011)

R | 115 min | Comedy, Drama

84 Metascore

A land baron tries to reconnect with his two daughters after his wife is seriously injured in a boating accident.

Director: Alexander Payne | Stars: George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller, Nick Krause

Votes: 251,734 | Gross: $82.58M

A subtle and clever movie, well written, beautifully crafted, superbly played... One of the best movies this year.

7. African Cats (2010)

G | 89 min | Documentary, Adventure

61 Metascore

Meet Mara, an endearing lion cub striving to be like her mother; Sita, a cheetah and single mother of five; and Fang, a proud leader of the pride who must defend his family from a rival lion.

Directors: Keith Scholey, Alastair Fothergill | Stars: Samuel L. Jackson, Patrick Stewart

Votes: 6,727 | Gross: $15.42M

Visually stunning, but the voice-over is intrusive and clearly dispensable.

8. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)

51 Metascore

Two Jedi escape a hostile blockade to find allies and come across a young boy who may bring balance to the Force, but the long dormant Sith resurface to claim their original glory.

Director: George Lucas | Stars: Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson, Natalie Portman, Jake Lloyd

Votes: 856,009 | Gross: $474.54M

The 3D version. Not a huge improvement, but quite fun for the 2-3 good scenes of the movie. Except that, it's always a bad movie.

9. Underworld: Awakening (2012)

R | 88 min | Action, Fantasy, Thriller

39 Metascore

When human forces discover the existence of the Vampire and Lycan clans, a war to eradicate both species commences. The vampire warrior Selene leads the battle against humankind.

Directors: Måns Mårlind, Björn Stein | Stars: Kate Beckinsale, Michael Ealy, India Eisley, Stephen Rea

Votes: 161,163 | Gross: $62.32M

None of the movies from this serie is good. But this one is just some carnage. The only good thing here is Kate Beckinsale... Almost 40 years old, and still gorgeous !

10. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)

Director: Tomas Alfredson | Stars: Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong

Votes: 212,432 | Gross: $24.15M

A clinical and cynical thriller. Visually splendid - in a cold way, the script and THE ACTORS. Just splendid, but very hard to get in.

11. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012)

PG | 94 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

41 Metascore

Sean Anderson partners with his mom's husband on a mission to find his grandfather, who is thought to be missing on a mythical island.

Director: Brad Peyton | Stars: Josh Hutcherson, Dwayne Johnson, Michael Caine, Luis Guzmán

Votes: 112,080 | Gross: $103.86M

Funny and stupid kid movie. I lost my time here, but it was quite entertaining, in a lazy way.

12. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011)

PG-13 | 96 min | Action, Fantasy, Thriller

34 Metascore

Johnny Blaze, tortured by the Ghost Rider's curse, gets a chance of redemption through protecting the Devil's son, whose father is pursuing him.

Directors: Mark Neveldine, Brian Taylor | Stars: Nicolas Cage, Ciarán Hinds, Idris Elba, Violante Placido

Votes: 126,184 | Gross: $51.77M

What a disapointment ! After Crank 1 & 2 and Gamer, some of the cheesiest, most hysterical projects of these days, I hoped for a good sequel-reboot of this character. Alas ! This movie is not a good one, and except for some sequences, it's not funny either... Ridiculous, and not half as fun as it should've been.

13. Il était une fois, une fois (2012)

Not Rated | 95 min | Comedy

By pretending to be heir to the Belgian throne, Willy and his gang set off a series of joyful events in the Parisian 5-star establishment.

Votes: 522

Some boring french comedy.

Director: Steven Spielberg | Stars: Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Benedict Cumberbatch

Votes: 165,555 | Gross: $79.88M

A family Spielberg movie. Not his best, but certainly not the worst. The story is naive but entertaining and touching, the visual direction is splendid, the actors do the work... All in all, a very good movie.

15. Chronicle (2012)

PG-13 | 84 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

69 Metascore

Three high school friends gain superpowers after making an incredible discovery underground. Soon they find their lives spinning out of control and their bond tested as they embrace their darker sides.

Director: Josh Trank | Stars: Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell, Michael B. Jordan, Michael Kelly

Votes: 264,365 | Gross: $64.58M

When some super heros encounter Akira... A very good new vision of the superheros mythology, with a more realistic side, but a lot of fun nonetheless. Refreshing !

16. The Grey (2011)

R | 117 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

64 Metascore

Director: Joe Carnahan | Stars: Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo, Dallas Roberts

Votes: 263,261 | Gross: $51.58M

A survival movie, with CG wolves and Liam Neeson... But it's well written, with good actors and nice landscapes. Good movie !

17. Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011)

75 Metascore

Haunted by painful memories and increasing paranoia, a damaged woman struggles to re-assimilate with her family after fleeing an abusive cult.

Director: Sean Durkin | Stars: Elizabeth Olsen, Sarah Paulson, John Hawkes, Christopher Abbott

Votes: 55,806 | Gross: $2.98M

Some astounding movie. Slow, gruesome, freaky, the kind of movie where you don't know if you like it until you've spent some time thinking about it. I liked it, definitely.

18. John Carter (2012)

PG-13 | 132 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

51 Metascore

Transported to Barsoom, a Civil War vet discovers a barren planet seemingly inhabited by 12-foot tall barbarians. Finding himself prisoner of these creatures, he escapes, only to encounter Woola and a princess in desperate need of a savior.

Director: Andrew Stanton | Stars: Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton

Votes: 286,119 | Gross: $73.08M

It's not because you spend alot of time, energy and money that you make a blockbuster hit. John Carter is the proof of it. The movie is not that bad, it's kinda funny, popular and not that stupid, but hey, it's about some action during the civil war on... Mars. Hardly believable, indeed.

19. My Way (2012)

Votes: 3,167

An excellent bopic, wether you like Claude François or not. It's nicely written, very entertaining AND realistic. And Jérémy Renier is just incredible as Cloclo. A very good french movie !

Director: Gary Ross | Stars: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Stanley Tucci

Votes: 1,003,229 | Gross: $408.01M

A nice movie for adolescents and young adults. It uses a lot of references (from 1984 to Brave New World) in the dystopic gender, it's kinda well done, with all the naive sides of a summer movie, but it's far better than all Twilights or alike.

21. This Means War (2012)

PG-13 | 103 min | Action, Comedy, Romance

31 Metascore

C.I.A. operatives wage an epic battle on each other when they discover they are dating the same woman.

Director: McG | Stars: Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, Til Schweiger

Votes: 194,202 | Gross: $54.76M

A lazy rom com, with just one argument : see Tom Hardy without make-up. Except that, it's a Mr & Mrs Smith rip-off, in worst.

22. Wrath of the Titans (2012)

PG-13 | 99 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

37 Metascore

Perseus braves the treacherous underworld to rescue his father, Zeus, captured by his son, Ares, and brother Hades who unleash the ancient Titans upon the world.

Director: Jonathan Liebesman | Stars: Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Rosamund Pike, Ralph Fiennes

Votes: 195,508 | Gross: $83.67M

The first movie was a shame. This one is just a bit better (especially the 3D, way better). Still a *beep* movie.

23. The Pirates! Band of Misfits (2012)

PG | 88 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

73 Metascore

Directors: Peter Lord, Jeff Newitt | Stars: Hugh Grant, Salma Hayek, Jeremy Piven, Martin Freeman

Votes: 51,403 | Gross: $31.05M

A cool movie, but not as good as Wallace & Gromit, unfortunately. It didn't deserve to bomb like this, but it's not the masterpiece it should have, from this creators. The 3D was absolutely useless.

24. HOUBA! On the Trail of the Marsupilami (2012)

PG-13 | 105 min | Adventure, Comedy, Family

Marsupilami is a mysterious alien mythical creature with kind heart & miraculous capacities which comes to knowledge of a reporter by coincidence.

Director: Alain Chabat | Stars: Jamel Debbouze, Alain Chabat, Fred Testot, Lambert Wilson

Votes: 4,283

A funny family movie, nicely done. It's for kids, but it's a little bit crazy, it's always funny, and it never takes itself seriously. A good one !

25. Battleship (2012)

PG-13 | 131 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

41 Metascore

A fleet of ships is forced to do battle with an armada of unknown origins in order to discover and thwart their destructive goals.

Director: Peter Berg | Stars: Alexander Skarsgård, Brooklyn Decker, Liam Neeson, Rihanna

Votes: 257,265 | Gross: $65.42M

This movie is an exploit : it's dumber than any other blockbuster made these 5 last years. Even Michaël Bay couldn't make something more stupid. But, and that's the big difference, Peter Berg never takes this movie for something serious, and it's funny and cranky from start to end. You won't challenge your mind, with this one, but you'll be quite entertained !

26. Mirror Mirror (I) (2012)

PG | 106 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

46 Metascore

Director: Tarsem Singh | Stars: Lily Collins, Julia Roberts, Armie Hammer, Nathan Lane

Votes: 91,049 | Gross: $64.94M

A kitsch and funny new vision of the tale. Tarsem is definitely lost for cinema (where is the author responsible for the splendid The Fall ?), but this project is kinda fun, stupid and visually stunning. What else ? Ah, yeah : Julia Roberts as the bad Queen.

27. The Lion King (1994)

G | 88 min | Animation, Adventure, Drama

88 Metascore

Lion prince Simba and his father are targeted by his bitter uncle, who wants to ascend the throne himself.

Directors: Roger Allers, Rob Minkoff | Stars: Matthew Broderick, Jeremy Irons, James Earl Jones, Whoopi Goldberg

Votes: 1,141,469 | Gross: $422.78M

For the 3D re-release. Still one of the best Disney made in the 1990's, Lion King deserved this new release.

28. Radiostars (2012)

A group of radio speakers go around France on a bus tour to reach the audience they lost.

Director: Romain Lévy | Stars: Manu Payet, Clovis Cornillac, Douglas Attal, Pascal Demolon

Votes: 1,454

A very good french comedy : it's funny, quite dark by moments, the actors are excellent... The only true problem is the ambition : this kind of movie shouldn't be produced for cinema, but for TV. Except that, a good movie.

29. Lockout (2012)

PG-13 | 95 min | Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller

48 Metascore

Directors: James Mather, Steve Saint Leger | Stars: Guy Pearce, Maggie Grace, Peter Stormare, Vincent Regan

Votes: 100,928 | Gross: $14.33M

Maybe the worst Luc Besson's production, with Columbiana. Even with money, you can make a pile of sh*t. It's just a shame for the actors, they didn't deserve this !

30. The Avengers (2012)

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Sci-Fi

69 Metascore

Earth's mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are going to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity.

Director: Joss Whedon | Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner

Votes: 1,458,806 | Gross: $623.28M

THE biggest movie of the year ! Superheros films have their master ! When the Nolan's Batman trilogy was serious and dark, the Whedon's Avengers is just fun packed with action and incredible visual direction. All is for spectacle and entertainment, here, and you'll get what you wanted, and even more ! One of the best movies of the year, and one of the best blockbusters of all time !

31. The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

Director: Drew Goddard | Stars: Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz

Votes: 450,452 | Gross: $42.07M

A funny horror flick. The ending is quite original, if not well written.

32. Margin Call (2011)

76 Metascore

Follows the key people at an investment bank over a 24-hour period during the early stages of the 2008 financial crisis.

Director: J.C. Chandor | Stars: Zachary Quinto, Stanley Tucci, Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany

Votes: 144,174 | Gross: $5.35M

The most ambitious movie I've seen concerning financial world. With a movie written like this, you WILL understand the actual crisis. And you'll cry, because the people that started it did it on purpose.

33. Dark Shadows (2012)

55 Metascore

An imprisoned vampire, Barnabas Collins, is set free and returns to his ancestral home, where his dysfunctional descendants are in need of his protection.

Director: Tim Burton | Stars: Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, Helena Bonham Carter

Votes: 280,402 | Gross: $79.73M

A lazy Tim Burton movie. There are some funny moments, but I had the feeling that he was trying to give us the same recipe, again and again, since Edward Scissorhands.

34. Contraband (2012)

R | 109 min | Action, Adventure, Crime

51 Metascore

To protect his brother-in-law from a drug lord, a former smuggler heads to Panama to score millions of dollars in counterfeit bills.

Director: Baltasar Kormákur | Stars: Mark Wahlberg, Giovanni Ribisi, Kate Beckinsale, Robert Wahlberg

Votes: 126,302 | Gross: $66.53M

Funny and stupid, but not a good movie.

Director: Jacques Audiard | Stars: Marion Cotillard, Matthias Schoenaerts, Armand Verdure, Céline Sallette

Votes: 70,279 | Gross: $2.06M

A rude drama, with two outstanding actors. It's beautifully written, the direction is awesome, maybe the most ambitious movie of the year. An instant classic.

36. Moonrise Kingdom (2012)

PG-13 | 94 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

84 Metascore

Two 12-year-olds, who live on an island, fall in love with each other and elope into the wilderness. While people set out on a search mission, a violent storm approaching them catches their attention.

Votes: 366,668 | Gross: $45.51M

Wes Anderson forever ! Strange, beautiful, poetic and funny... You know what you want, and you get it here. A splendid movie.

Director: Barry Sonnenfeld | Stars: Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Jemaine Clement

Votes: 386,841 | Gross: $179.02M

Well, it could've been alot better. Funny, with excellent special effects, a lame script, and some good lines. Well, it could've been alot worse, too.

38. Cosmopolis (2012)

R | 109 min | Crime, Drama, Fantasy

58 Metascore

Director: Walter Salles | Stars: Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, Amy Adams

Votes: 43,286 | Gross: $0.72M

The actors are excellent, but the script isn't very well written. An intersting movie, to be seen as a tribute.

Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Noomi Rapace, Logan Marshall-Green, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron

Votes: 643,923 | Gross: $126.48M

How to disappoint ? Scott sure took some lessons to ruin all his efforts here. The direction is good, the actors do the job, but why destroy everything with such a lame script ? A big shame on them.

Votes: 2,091

Strange little production, this movie is all about actors. Poelvoorde and Dupontel are amazing, the story is as crazy as touching, and the direction is not that cheap. Interesting !

Votes: 334,591 | Gross: $59.65M

Funny, with a hardcore sense of humor, the latest project of Sasha Baron Cohen is a little disappointment since it looks like the 3 others, with another character. The concept is known, now, you should change it !

45. The Raid: Redemption (2011)

The worst of all Ice Ages. Not as funny as before, it clearly lost its sens of humour, and looks more for the young audience.

Votes: 1,826,274 | Gross: $448.14M

Not as good as its predecessor, a very dark thriller about power and money nonetheless. If Bane had been improved as a character, the movie would've been better. A little disappointment.
