5. Kid Nation (2007)
A group of young kids are forced to the limits as they experience challenges without adults.
From annieoklieCerrillos (United States) - GREAT to watch kids have such a life-changing experience & grow in positive ways!!
It was sad how many negative comments were flying around the media before Kid Nation was even aired!! we were wondering what it was going to be like, but decided to Tivo anyway. the crew was SO creative with the challenges and rewards etc etc. it was a joy to see the kids mature and grow---so many arrived spoiled and unwilling to jump in there, but they really changed over the weeks and we fell in love with each of them!!! they dealt with human conflict often better than adults, and in the end knew it was much more than an opportunity to be on a TV show..... it was an amazing opportunity to pull together and form a family/community, and make life-long friends!!!! we look forward to the Bonanza Annual Reunion, and know how this experience changed their lives---what will they become as adults? how will they influence our world? GOOD JOB KIDS!!! GOOD JOB PRODUCERS AND CREW!!!!!!!! PS...great to see old Daisytown transformed!!!

Neglected 13 year old Aloysha is cast in a cheesecake commercial and becomes obsessed with the idea of having a "perfect family" of his own, at any cost.
From bumscratcher (Bermuda) - A great example of the new direction in Russian 'Indie' film making
Three people from totally different backgrounds are cast in a commercial promoting a wholesome dessert: Mikhail the physician (Sergei Chonishvili), Natasha the professional actress (Olga Lomonosova), and thirteen-year-old Alyosha, cast "right off the street". They portray such an idealized family for the ad that Alyosha decides that he will stop at nothing to make his life as perfect as the one he 'played on TV'...
Director Eugene Zvezdakov's deft hand guides the subtle script by Elena Dolgopyat to slowly and carefully bring the viewer to the surprising ending, aided by a fine score by Daniel Kalashnik.
A great example of the new direction in Russian 'Indie' film making; an outstanding performance from Pavel Melenchuk, virtually unknown outside of Russia, as Alyosha, anchors this beautifully made psychological thriller, a sleeper even in Russia.

From infoforleslie (United States) -Un Secreto de Esperanza
This is, frankly, one of the great movies of all times. It's worthy of being labeled a classic. It can live forever. It's never going to go out of style. And it's for everyone. That's the shortest report I can give you. Un Secreto de Esperanza is magical. The acting is exquisite. It's impeccable. The photography is pristine. It was a bit of a shock to see the physical beauty of Katy gone(God rest her soul now). She was always a real fine actress, as well as beautiful. Now she was a really old, wreak of a woman. But her ability to create a full-blown person was still as sharp as ever. And I know it was a magical movie about magical people because before long, somehow, she was beautiful all over again, even if she was old and out of shape. This story has layers, it has substance, it has intelligence, it has integrity, it's got so much spirit it radiates. I staggered out at the end gasping 'everyone has to see this'. I kept thinking: if enough people see this movie, we might even have world peace. You know, it just got to me, to my core. What a gift. Thank you to everyone who helped make this film. It was heaven.

33. Zurdo (2003)
110 min | Adventure, Fantasy
Futuristic movie about Alejandro, a gifted left-handed child marble player who must win a competition as the entire town's hopes - and money - rest on him.
From CVMC -
Director Carlos Salces makes a simple thing like playing marbles the topic of his first feature with amazing results. Alexandro (Alex Perea), nicknamed "Zurdo", is a young kid in a futuristic fantasy version of a Mexican small town. He has an extraordinary ability to play marbles, and his great skill at the game doesn't go unnoticed. A mysterious stranger from a neighbor town challenges Zurdo to a duel against the champion of his town, with a enormous prize in cash. The town makes Zurdo accept the challenge and soon he becomes the center of the town's attention as everyone wants to make a profit off Zurdo's ability.
With big influence from Japanese comic books and Mexican folklore, Salces paints his futuristic world with great care for details. The always present theme of the corrupt government in Mexican movies is here too, in the shape of Romo, a man who pretends to use Zurdo's talent for evil purposes while he abuses Zurdo's community. As one would expect, marbles play a great part in the movie, not only as a plot device, but also as a metaphor. Fun!.

H" "From lazarillo (Denver, Colorado and Santiago, Chile) -
An overweight teenage girl (Lara Wendel) walks in on her slutty mother (Stephania Sandrelli) having a three-way (right after the daughter's birthday party). She later confronts her mother and gets her birthday cake shoved in her face. She then tries to commit suicide, but survives and loses a lot of weight. Now attractive to boys and men for the first time, she turns into a world-class tease, manipulating a smitten boy her age (so she can rob his parent's house), her mother's middle-age jerk of boyfriend, an older would-be revolutionary, and his sinister contact. It all ends in tears and some rather unbelievable melodrama.
The main strength of this movie is the two female leads. The strikingly beautiful Sandrelli started in Italian films when she herself was teenager, appearing in two classics, "Divorce, Italian Style" and "Seduced and Abandoned". As she approached middle-age Sandrelli took on another career of "sexy mama" roles most notably in Tinto Brass' "The Key", but also "Jamon, Jamon" (where she played Penelope Cruz's mother) and Lina Wertmueller's "The Nymph". Lara Wendel is kind of the Italian version of Linda Blair having played the Linda Blair role in "Ring of Darkness", perhaps the most ridiculous of many ridiculous Italian "Exorcist"/"The Omen" knock-offs. She went on to do horror films for Dario Argento ("Tenebrae"), Joe D'Amato ("Killing Birds"), and Umberto Lenzi ("Ghosthouse"), and she'd started her career playing the young Mimsy Farmer in the creepy horror/giallo "Perfume of the Lady in Black". But as the result of her notorious second film, Wendel also became a rather unlikely sex star (although she seems to use a body double for some her more graphic scenes here). She is actually really good in this and even better in her subsequent film "Ernesto" (where she plays male and female twins). She was really somewhat of a wasted talent in the blood-soaked, sex-crazed Italian cinema of the time.
I know little about the director, but his movie kind of reminds of a Catherine Breillat film, but with French feminism replace by a more leering, Italian male sensibility. Not a great movie, but not terrible either.
52. Heinähattu ja Vilttitossu (2002)
75 min | Family
The quirky adventures of Hayflower and her little sister Quiltshoe.
From mickingambia (United Kingdom) - Summer In Finland - a little girl's story...
Utterly delightful is the only way to describe this film. I don't speak any Scandinavian languages and could not understand a word, but the mark of a great film is its ability to transcend the language barrier, which Heinahattu does with style. This is quite simply a study in childhood in a Finnish summer, beautifully acted by two young girls such that you entirely forget this is scripted play, and breathtakingly innocuous. You can always rely on Scandinavian cinema to produce fine coming of age and child-centred films that rely on real-life effects rather than fancy Hollywood theatrics, and this one is particularly pleasant and wholly suitable for family viewing.

"I am" tells the story of Kundel, a boy searching for his place in life, his identity. After running away from an orphanage where he is treated as an outcast among outcasts by both his peers and the adults in charge, and being rejected a second time by his alcoholic mother, who had earlier abandoned him, the resolute 11-year-old finds a "home" on a deserted old barge on the outskirts of his hometown. He is still an outcast, but he is an outcast on his own terms, rejecting both patronizing charitable gestures and coercion by local thugs. In the process he makes one true friend, a girl from an affluent family who is also an outcast, despite living in material comfort.

Here's a real winner from Hong Kong, perhaps one of the best Coming-of-Age films I've thus far seen from the Orient.
No consistent plot is to be found; instead, we follow a fourteen year old boy as he deals with the sexual onslaught of puberty, first love, the awkwardness of being a young adolescent, parents, siblings, friends and much more. A true-to-life and touching portrait you don't want to miss; recommended!

It is now 1955. At school, Rick sees a film about the Congo and comes under the spell of Darkest Africa. He reads in a newspaper that an expedition led by Professor Oudewetering will set out from Brussels to the Congo in search of the "Missing Link." Rick is convinced that the expedition is searching in the wrong place and runs away from home to visit the professor in person. During the chaotic journey, he reads his mother's old diary. From Grann-Bach (Grann-Bach@jubii.dk) (Denmark) - Look no further for quality
I must admit, I have not read the novel. I would like to, I like Mark Twain. Thus, I cannot comment on how much justice this adaptation does to his written original. What I can say is that I did not expect this to be as good as it turned out when I saw it in the television listings, but it really got my attention, and I never grew tired of it. The story is good, well-told and at the same time manages notable focus and many well-done sub-plots. The themes explored are interesting, and in addition to history and perspective, they can be applied to today's world. The costumes are immensely well-done. The music is great. The action is well-done, shot well and always fun and exciting. The acting is spot-on, throughout, including the children. Hyde is astonishing. The humor does have some juvenile material, however, the vast majority of it is safe for kids, yet not insulting to adults. This can be watched by anyone, of any age, and one could, if so inclined, sit down with their family and enjoy it together. I recommend this to any fan of the tale, the author of the book that was the source of this, and/or anyone involved in making this film.

Viktor (Yuri Zvyagintsev) and Vlad (Aleksandr Biryukov) are far from happy when their father comes home from World War II -- they had thought he was dead. So they have been running a bit wild, and Dad’s no-nonsense approach to responsibility has them angry. At the same time, the street kids they have been running with have been turning them out, maybe out of jealousy because the brothers have a Dad again.
Things are further complicated when their mother’s brother, another prisoner of war, also shows up. He is a con-man and a rogue, and the kids take to him immediately. They conspire with him to try to get their mother to throw their Dad out. Perhaps the boys will come to realize who is best for them by the time the ending credits role. Nicely done mid-80's film from the Soviet Union.
