- DirectorNeil MarshallStarsShauna MacdonaldNatalie MendozaAlex ReidA caving expedition goes horribly wrong, as the explorers become trapped and ultimately pursued by a strange breed of predators. This film is one of my all time favorites. As a horror it plays on claustrophobia very well. The film releases it's monster at the perfect moment, so the audience doesn't get to see what they are until suspense has reached crescendo. 9/10
- DirectorRoman PolanskiStarsCatherine DeneuveIan HendryJohn FraserA sex-repulsed woman who disapproves of her sister's boyfriend sinks into depression and has horrific visions of rape and violence. One of my all time favourites. Polanski shows the gradual breakdown of a young woman from normality into Psychosis. 9/10
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsKurt RussellWilford BrimleyKeith DavidA research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims.Monsters. Gore. Paranoia. Huskies. I loved it. There is so much suspense in this film, the audience can really get involved in trying to guess who is the thing at every moment. One of my favourites I rate it 9/10
- DirectorDrew GoddardStarsKristen ConnollyChris HemsworthAnna HutchisonFive college friends head out to a remote cabin for a getaway, but things don't go as planned when they start getting killed. They soon discover that there is more to the cabin than it seems.Different. A different take on the cliche horror narrative that boasts a wide range of monsters exhibited throughout the film as well as an a unique finale. My rating 8/10
- DirectorAlejandro AmenábarStarsNicole KidmanChristopher EcclestonFionnula FlanaganIn 1945, immediately following the end of Second World War, a woman who lives with her two photosensitive children on her darkened old family estate in the Channel Islands becomes convinced that the home is haunted.A film that builds up and builds up and then turns everything on it's head. 8/10
- DirectorYoshihiro NishimuraStarsEihi ShiinaItsuji ItaoYukihide BennyIn future Tokyo, a young woman in the privatized police force tracks down her father's killer while battling against mutant rebels known as engineers. So over the top I can't help but enjoy it. With gore in it's name, it doesn't disappoint. Not much scare factor, but it makes up for it with it's comic appeal. 8/10
- DirectorGuillermo del ToroStarsIvana BaqueroAriadna GilSergi LópezIn the Falangist Spain of 1944, the bookish young stepdaughter of a sadistic army officer escapes into an eerie but captivating fantasy world.Guilermo Del Toro called it "a fairy tale for grown-ups" this film has the charm of a gothic fairy tale that's been vamped up in gore and drama to meet criteria of an adult film. For a 15 there are a few brutal gore moments here but the main attraction is dual narratives of a fairy tale world and a war torn Spain. Beautiful settings and enchanting narrative. I gave it 8/10
- DirectorGuillermo del ToroStarsMarisa ParedesEduardo NoriegaFederico LuppiAfter Carlos - a 12-year-old whose father has died in the Spanish Civil War - arrives at an ominous boys' orphanage, he discovers the school is haunted and has many dark secrets which he must uncover.A romantic tale of ghosts and vengeance. Like Pan's Labyrinth Del Toro delivers a mystical fairy tale like element to his movie. Both disturbing and soothing this was well worth watching. My rating 8/10
- DirectorRoman PolanskiStarsMia FarrowJohn CassavetesRuth GordonA young couple trying for a baby moves into an aging, ornate apartment building on Central Park West, where they find themselves surrounded by peculiar neighbors. While it's not my favourite Polanski movie it's one that a lot of people have heard of. It's often cited as the ultimate paranoia movie, and I wouldn't disagree. Forget gore factor, it's almost all mind games here. And I loved practically every minute of it. Another 8/10
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsJack NicholsonShelley DuvallDanny LloydA family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future.Classic. Brilliant acting. Interesting camera work. Amazing suspense build up. It's no wonder why this film is so well-known. As it lacked heavy gore factor of later films which horror fans arguably want (or need) nowadays I gave it 8/10
- DirectorYoshiaki KawajiriStarsAndrew PhilpotJohn Rafter LeePamela AdlonA legendary dhampir competes with a motley family of bounty hunters to return a young woman, who has been seemingly abducted by a vampire, to her family.Having not watched an anime horror movie before I was intrigued. This did not disappoint. It carried it's own style and pitched it well. I can understand why some horror fans may be unwilling to give this one a go as you loose out on gory CGI or puppetry but after a while you get used to the anime bloodlust of this film. I gave it 8/10
- DirectorJames WanStarsPatrick WilsonRose ByrneTy SimpkinsA family looks to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further.I can't be the only one here who became disappointed with this film as soon as the 'monster' (Darth Maul) was revealed. Until then the film ranked quite highly for me. My overall rating 7/10.
- DirectorWolfgang PetersenStarsDustin HoffmanRene RussoMorgan FreemanA team of Army doctors struggle to find a cure for the deadly Motaba virus that was transported from Africa to North America by a white-headed Capuchin monkey and is now spreading quickly throughout a small California town.Surprised I didn't see this sooner. Not an epic yet this viral thriller is well thought out and well executed. Look out for Morgan Freeman. My rating 7/10
- DirectorChristian NybyHoward HawksStarsKenneth TobeyMargaret SheridanJames ArnessScientists and American Air Force officials fend off a bloodthirsty alien organism while at a remote arctic outpost.Because it doesn't fall prey to modern horror cliches this film might actually make you jump, like it did to me. It plays heavily on suspense and sudden, unannounced jumps. I thoroughly enjoyed it 7/10
- DirectorChris CrowStarsScarlett Alice JohnsonJack GordonMichael JibsonJo, Max, Gwen and Dave win the competition. Then they head off on an all expenses paid trip to New York, courtesy of the social network. As they board the private jet, they are asked to relinquish their mobile phones and take part in the in-flight entertainment - a new online gaming experience.I actually thoroughly enjoyed this. While not scary per se I felt the film offered an alternative set up which made it much more interesting. I gave it 7/10
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsBruce CampbellEllen SandweissRichard DeManincorFive friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons.Nothing like an original. Ridiculously gory and not particularly scary by modern standards yet still slightly comic. My rating 7/10
- DirectorRussell MulcahyStarsMilla JovovichAli LarterOded FehrSurvivors of the Raccoon City catastrophe travel across the Nevada desert, hoping to make it to Alaska. Alice joins the caravan and their fight against the evil Umbrella Corp.My favourite of the series. I loved the mise-en-scene of the desert, I loved the bird attack and at the same time the narrative progresses and the audience get's more engrossed into the resident evil saga. My rating 7/10
- DirectorAlbert HughesAllen HughesStarsJohnny DeppHeather GrahamIan HolmAfter five ritualistic murders are committed in 1888 London, Inspector Abberline's assignment is to investigate the "Jack the Ripper" murders. Along with a string of mutilated prostitutes, he uncovers a conspiracy involving the government.Johnny Depp saves an otherwise mediocre movie from being unrecognised. 7/10
- DirectorJon HarrisStarsMichael J. ReynoldsShauna MacdonaldJessika WilliamsRefusing to believe her story about cave-dwelling monsters, the sole survivor of a spelunking exploration gone horribly wrong is forced to follow the authorities back into the caves where something awaits. Not bad as sequels go. The claustrophobia set in once more and the execution was almost as good. Unfortunately the monster was revealed too early and spoiled some of the raw fear of the film. That aside an awesome movie. My rating 7/10
- DirectorAndrzej BartkowiakStarsKarl UrbanRosamund PikeDwayne JohnsonSpace Marines are sent to investigate strange events at a research facility on Mars but find themselves at the mercy of genetically enhanced killing machines.I don't care that this movie was a flop. I rather enjoyed it. The Monsters looked quite good, their origins were hinted at rather well and there was a decent end fight. What pushed this up to a 7 from a 6 was the first person sequence that was truly reminiscent of the old video games (and the 2003 Doom 3) My rating 7/10
- DirectorJohn Erick DowdleStarsJennifer CarpenterSteve HarrisColumbus ShortA television reporter and her cameraman are trapped inside a building quarantined by the CDC, after the outbreak of a mysterious virus which turns humans into bloodthirsty killers. The scene for scene remake of REC does not impress like the original, but still leaves an unsettling atmosphere. 7/10
- DirectorJohn PogueStarsMercedes MasonJosh CookeMattie LiptakA plane is taken over by a mysterious virus. When the plane lands it is placed under quarantine. Now a group of survivors must band together to survive the quarantine.I hope they never make this the in flight movie. The film has a good scare factor even while grounded. 7/10
- DirectorRuggero DeodatoStarsRobert KermanFrancesca CiardiPerry PirkanenDuring a rescue mission into the Amazon rainforest, a professor stumbles across lost film shot by a missing documentary crew.Brutal and made to shock. 7/10
- DirectorRobert RodriguezStarsRose McGowanFreddy RodríguezJosh BrolinAfter an experimental bio-weapon is released, turning thousands into zombie-like creatures, it's up to a rag-tag group of survivors to stop the infected and those behind its release.Similar to Tokyo Gore Police, this film is so over the top it's both hilarious and ridiculous with some graphic novel type intermissions. I give it 7/10
- DirectorJake WestStarsDanny DyerNoel ClarkeEmil MarwaA group of men, heading to a remote village to help one of their friends get over his divorce, soon discover that all the women have been infected with a virus that makes them man-hating cannibals.Certainly nothing new here, but entertaining all the same. My favorite factor about this movie is the way the narrative flows into a horror story quickly and not in a poor or forced way like other films.
I rate this film 6/10.
