Dystopian Movies I've Seen

Utopia and Dystopia are in fact the same thing but only how you get there (to misery, suffering, pain, all that is bad) is reversed. That is what people forget. The closer you get to creating an actual utopia the more miserable everyone becomes. The harder you try to create a world of perfection, the worse the world becomes. This lesson has been taught over and over again by the greats of science fiction like Harlan Ellison and Ursula K. LeGuin; it is taught in “The Road to Science Fiction” by Dr. James Gunn; it’s the irony of all of this. You cannot make a perfect world without having a fatal flaw that could lead it to be a dystopian society.

NOTE: For many of the movies, I have tried to include explanations as to why they are dystopian. Many of these explanations are not my own but are interesting comments that I have found throughout the web, and therefore I have included them since I could not say it better myself.

“ Why it's dystopian:

The proletariat toils in endless drudgery while being bombarded with advertising for escapist space luxury cruises, which they can never join because the contests for tickets are secretly rigged by the military-controlled government. Meanwhile entire industries are monopolistically controlled by tycoons who fire millions of workers on a whim, military-grade weaponry is seemingly omnipresent, and the police can't even pull over a taxi driver much less stop an armed hijacking. The President is an ineffectual figurehead, citizens are not safe in their homes, wealth inequality is through the roof, and last but not least their version of Wikipedia *beep* SUCKS. ” - imsokrazy15

“ Why it's dystopian:

The Alien series is an example of a corporate based dystopia and is similar to a government/societal dystopia with the exception that the repressing power is a private company or small faction rather than a government. These stories generally include the motive of commercial profit instead of, or in addition to, the benefits of increased power and authority. ” - imsokrazy15
