Military science-fiction

The future is war!!!*

A list for military science-fiction (MSF) movies and TV. However, actually pinning the definition down can be tricky.

David Weber, author of the Honor Harrington series, has defined military science-fiction as:


I would differentiate between what I consider to be "military science-fiction" and what I consider to be ... something else masquerading by the same name.

For me, military science-fiction is science-fiction which is written about a military situation with a fundamental understanding of how military lifestyles and characters differ from civilian lifestyles and characters. It is science-fiction which attempts to realistically portray the military within a science-fiction context. It is not "bug shoots." It is about human beings, and members of other species, caught up in warfare and carnage. It isn't an excuse for simplistic solutions to problems.

It's an opportunity to explore responsibilities, morality, sacrifices, and costs.


It is a strict definition and few on here tick all the boxes, but most manage to satisfy the majority of his criteria. Although it is purely subjective (and eventually comes down to "I know it when I see it"), my rule-of-thumb is along the lines of: future (or near future) conflict where some of the protagonists are members of a military organisation, possibly opposed by another such group (or hordes of alien beasties). Just don't hold me to that too strictly.

The horrors of war list is more a direct intersection of war and horror and might include some sci-fi elements where supersoldier programs go wrong. Forbidden Planet could be the first sci-fi film to have a military sci-fi element."

It is tricky pinning down the earliest such film*, The Day the Earth Stood Still has the army confronting aliens and there are other various films that are in the crossover between war and science fiction, but (until I can think of another example) this seems a good bet and was influential on later sci-fi like Star Trek (the majority of which I won't be including as, despite the military ranks, the franchise's main thrust is exploration, with some ass-kicking as a last resort - although I do make one exception below).

All the flashy widescreen combat comes at the start of the film though.

This shows more extensive combat than the Predator-esque movies (as mentioned above) but the concerns are similar (it is just that the size of the military force is larger and utilises vehicles). Other films that fall into the same general area are Battle Los Angeles and Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon, but the former has a very MSF feel to it and they are opposing another military force. So I'm drawing the line to include these films but exclude WotW adaptations and TDtESS, as well as films like Skyline, as they might show the military responding to the sci-fi threat but the focus stays on the civilians (with the military being more of a presence at the start or in the middle, rather than at the end). ” - Mighty_Emperor

While if anyone can write a WH40K tale then Dan Abnett can, he was hampered by the setting and set-up. While it makes sense to lead with Ultramarines, they are the vanilla chapter and while there isn't a problem deploying them as little figures on the battlefield, it is difficult to separate one tough supersoldier from another shouting "For the Emperor!" (which I appreciated but still...), so it is difficult to care about any characters. The best stories (like the ones Abnett writes in his WH40K books, especially the series) focus on more individualistic characters operating at the fringe of the fictional universe. Perhaps they had to get this film done as the foundation to build a cinematic franchise on, but the concern would be that the lack of success this had might mean we'd never get a Gaunt's Ghosts, Eisenhorn or Ravenor film, which would be a loss. ” - Mighty_Emperor
