- DirectorGore VerbinskiStarsJohnny DeppArmie HammerWilliam FichtnerNative American warrior Tonto recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid, a man of the law, into a legend of justice.Beautiful backdrop for such a poor movie. With all the resources they had to make this movie the end result was just sad.
- DirectorNorman TaurogStarsDean MartinJerry LewisDonna ReedAlthough gifted golfer Harvey Miller is too nervous to golf in public tournaments, he acts as coach and caddy for friend Joe Anthony.Martin and Lewis preform their nightclub acts with the movie and it's plot an after thought. Hope/Crosby road pictures are much better.
- DirectorAnne FletcherStarsBarbra StreisandSeth RogenJulene ReneeAs inventor Andy Brewster is about to embark on the road trip of a lifetime, a quick stop at his mom's house turns into an unexpected cross-country voyage with her along for the ride.I found this movie akin to finger nails scraping across a chalkboard. Streisand’s character whines and nags for the entire movie. This movie is not very funny and for the most part it is just sad.
- DirectorDan ScanlonStarsBilly CrystalJohn GoodmanSteve BuscemiA look at the relationship between Mike Wazowski and James P. "Sully" Sullivan during their days at Monsters University, when they weren't necessarily the best of friends.I've got a soft spot for collage frat movies, I know their crap but I still like watching them. When looking for a movie to watch with my grandson I thought this might be one could enjoy together. I was wrong. On a positive note my four year old grandson liked it, but then he didn't understand the plot.
- DirectorShane BlackStarsRobert Downey Jr.Guy PearceGwyneth PaltrowWhen Tony Stark's world is torn apart by a formidable terrorist called the Mandarin, he starts an odyssey of rebuilding and retribution.Lots of action, but the plot and script fell flat with me. Downey does a good job with what he was given.
- DirectorGary NelsonStarsGlenn FordMichael BurnsDana WynterA bounty hunter takes in the son of a man he killed.Glen Ford was made for this role, unfortunately the script doesn’t hold up. It’s got all the parts, but the film falls flat. Feel like a Glen Ford western, watch the Rounders or 3:10 to Yuma
- DirectorAntoine FuquaStarsGerard ButlerAaron EckhartMorgan FreemanSecret Service agent Mike Banning finds himself trapped inside the White House in the wake of a terrorist attack and works with national security to rescue the President from his kidnappers. This movie is "Die Hard" at the White House, it has several very similar events. Assault group trying to come in from the roof, traitor that helps the bad guys and a scene where the hero talks to the bad guy on the radio (only now it's a cell phone). If you enjoyed the "Die Hard" movies, then give this film a try. This one takes itself more seriously so it not funny on purpose. While we laughed at the movie, but I don't think that's what the director was going for.
- DirectorTay GarnettStarsAlan LaddPatricia MedinaAndré MorellDuring King Arthur's time, a sword maker wishes to win Lady Linet's heart but first he must become a noble knight.Alan Ladd has the same expression the entire movie, don't think you can call what he did in this movie acting. It's also really amazing how they mount a horse and arrive anywhere in minutes. The colors in the film are very bright and that shows off all the funny gaudy costumes. While I normally enjoy these types of movies, this one falls flat.
- DirectorEvan GoldbergSeth RogenStarsJames FrancoJonah HillSeth RogenSix Los Angeles celebrities are stuck in James Franco's house after a series of devastating events just destroyed the city. Inside, the group not only have to face the apocalypse, but themselves.Couple of laughs, but after the first 30 minutes I was waiting for the end.
- DirectorRobert SchwentkeStarsRyan ReynoldsJeff BridgesMary-Louise ParkerA cop killed by his own partner joins RIPD, an afterlife law enforcement department working to apprehend various monsters disguised as humans living on earth, and gets paired up with a smart-mouthed veteran.Men in Black hunt the dead. If you enjoyed the Men in Black movies, then you should like R.I.P.D.
- DirectorShawn LevyStarsVince VaughnOwen WilsonRose ByrneTwo salesmen whose careers have been torpedoed by the digital age find their way into a coveted internship at Google, where they must compete with a group of young, tech-savvy geniuses for a shot at employment. The older you are the more meaning this movie may hold for you. With the speed that everything changes becoming obsolete is just a mater of time. How to deal with these changes is a question this movie doesn't answer. Average buddy movie with a few laughs and lots of eye rolls.
- DirectorBaltasar KormákurStarsDenzel WashingtonMark WahlbergPaula PattonTwo hardened criminals get into trouble with the US border patrol after meeting with a Mexican drug lord, and then revelations start to unfold.Lots of action, but so unbelievable it makes you laugh at the wrong times. Washington and Wahlberg have enough chemistry to keep the movie from really stinking.
- DirectorJeff RenfroeStarsKevin ZegersLaurence FishburneBill PaxtonForced underground by the next ice age, a struggling outpost of survivors must fight to preserve humanity against a threat even more savage than nature. This movie had lots of opportunity to really explore how people react to stress and hardship. In the beginning it teases the viewer with these plot lines. However the movie quickly evolves into horror/action movie with lots of blood and killing. It was a fun movie, but it could have been so much more.
- DirectorDean ParisotStarsBruce WillisHelen MirrenJohn MalkovichRetired CIA agent Frank Moses reunites his unlikely team of elite operatives for a global quest to track down a missing portable nuclear device. Not the best plot, but that's not why you watch this movie. It's filled with action and one liners. Some of the jokes fall flat, but enough worked for me to enjoy the movie. Nothing great here, but I was entertained.
- DirectorGuillermo del ToroStarsIdris ElbaCharlie HunnamRinko KikuchiAs a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on, a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon in a desperate effort to save the world from the apocalypse. This movie has action and special effects, but that's all. If your looking for plot and acting in Pacific Rim you will be disappointed. Giant robots fighting monsters with the world in the balance, it's Godzilla redone.
- DirectorRawson Marshall ThurberStarsJason SudeikisJennifer AnistonEmma RobertsA veteran pot dealer creates a fake family as part of his plan to move a huge shipment of weed into the U.S. from Mexico. We're the Millers throws out lot's of crude humor and some it struck home. Found myself laughing and shaking my head at the same time.
- DirectorM. Night ShyamalanStarsJaden SmithDavid DenmanWill SmithA crash landing leaves Kitai Raige and his father Cypher stranded on Earth, a millennium after events forced humanity's escape. With Cypher injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help.Best line in the movie, "I want to work with mom". No surprises, you know everything that's going to happen, but it still held my interest.
- DirectorLewis MilestoneStarsBarbara StanwyckVan HeflinLizabeth ScottA man is reunited with his childhood friend and her husband who believes he knows the truth about the death of her rich aunt years earlier. There are times when the movie drifts, but the scenes where Barbara Stanwyck and Kirk Douglas interact are riveting. Lizabeth Scott also grabbed my attention but her part didn't give her much to work with.
- DirectorRoland EmmerichStarsChanning TatumJamie FoxxMaggie GyllenhaalWhile on a tour of the White House with his young daughter, a Capitol policeman springs into action to save his child and protect the president from a heavily armed group of paramilitary invaders.Die Hard goes to the White House, lots of tongue in cheek with plenty of action.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsTallulah BankheadJohn HodiakWalter SlezakSeveral survivors of a torpedoed merchant ship in World War II find themselves in the same lifeboat with one of the crew members of the U-boat that sank their ship. This film shows that you don't need special effects to make a good movie. The entire movie takes place in a small lifeboat. Within this limited space the human spirit is explored under stress.
- DirectorAriel VromenStarsMichael ShannonChris EvansJames FrancoThe story of Richard Kuklinski, the notorious contract killer and family man. When he was finally arrested in 1986, neither his wife nor his daughters had any clue about his real profession. The movie is a hard look at cold emotionless sociopath and killer. We are outsider’s looking into Kuklinski life, but not into his thoughts. He’s like a wild animal, unpredictable except in his violent reactions. Kukinski loved his family and the rest of the world was his prey. While some might see this lack of insight into Kuklinski as a flaw, I enjoyed it. Was surprised by how much I liked this movie, it’s not my normal fare.
- DirectorDavid MillerStarsKirk DouglasGena RowlandsWalter MatthauA fiercely independent cowboy gets himself locked up in prison to escape with an old friend.Well written characters brought to life with great acting all set against a New Mexican landscape.
- DirectorArthur PennStarsDustin HoffmanFaye DunawayChief Dan GeorgeJack Crabb, looking back from extreme old age, tells of his life being raised by Native Americans and fighting with General Custer. This movie is both funny and sad. We are shown Jack’s life story and the destruction of the Sioux nation. The Sioux are depicted as caring loving people not the murdering savages seen in most westerns. Old Lodgeskins (Chief Dan George) is a wise and very forgiving chief, he’s is the real hero of this story. This movie had an impact on me as a teen and still does today, it’s a great classic movie.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsTom HanksMatt DamonTom SizemoreFollowing the Normandy Landings, a group of U.S. soldiers go behind enemy lines to retrieve a paratrooper whose brothers have been killed in action. This movie gives you a small taste of war and it's intense. The characters are flawed and varied making it easy to identify with them. Spielberg did such a good job bring these characters to life, that each time I watch the movie I find tears in eyes at the end. Saving Private Ryan a well made movie that grabs you and holds you till the very end.
- DirectorJacques TourneurStarsRobert MitchumJane GreerKirk DouglasA private eye escapes his past to run a gas station in a small town, but his past catches up with him. Now he must return to the big city world of danger, corruption, double crosses, and duplicitous dames. The first half of the movie shows us the past, that the hero (Robert Mitchum) is running from. Those past ghosts are the fem-fatal (Jane Greer) and gambler (Kirk Douglas). The second half is the three of them dancing with plots and counter plots, rushing to a final conclusion. It's works and well worth watching.
- DirectorJoseph L. MankiewiczStarsJeanne CrainLinda DarnellAnn SothernA letter is addressed to three wives from their "best friend" Addie Ross, announcing that she is running away with one of their husbands - but she does not say which one.Great cast with superb script to bring it all together. The script and director both got Oscars and it easy to understand why. The story really makes you think, and maybe appreciate your mate a little more. Watch it!
- DirectorNeill BlomkampStarsMatt DamonJodie FosterSharlto CopleyIn the year 2154, the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth. A man takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds. The movie has an interesting premises, but the characters are one dimensional. The writers used childhood flashbacks to try and connect us with the hero, it doesn't work.
- DirectorMichael CurtizStarsKirk DouglasLauren BacallDoris DayA young trumpet player is torn between an honest singer and a manipulative heiress. The story of Rick Martin (Kirk Douglas) a man driven by his desire to play the music that's feeds his soul. Doris Day sings a couple of songs that are worth hearing, but her character seems added just for the songs. Lauren Bacall really excels as a women so envious of Martin's love of music, she tries to kill it. The ending is a little weak, but overall a good movie.
- DirectorRaoul WalshStarsKirk DouglasVirginia MayoJohn AgarA U.S. Marshall and two deputies rescue a cattle rustler from a lynch mob led by a local cattle baron convinced that the rustler also killed his son.Along the Great Divide is a solid western with several classic components. It has the marshal (Kirk Douglas) obsessed with doing his job at all costs. Then there is the wily old man (Walter Brennan) working to get free with the help of his beautiful daughter (Virginia Mayo). The interactions of these three under the pressure of crossing the desert drives the plot. It's has potential, but the ending brings it back to standard western plot lines, making for an average movie.
- DirectorBilly WilderStarsKirk DouglasJan SterlingRobert ArthurA frustrated former big-city journalist now stuck working for an Albuquerque newspaper exploits a story about a man trapped in a cave to rekindle his career, but the situation quickly escalates into an out-of-control circus.Chuck Tatum (Kirk Douglas) is looking for a story to bring him back to the big time and finds what just what he needs with a man trapped by a cave in. Everybody is this film exhibits some type of moral flaw, even the subject of our pity (the trapped man) is a grave robber. A very cynical portrayal of the media, well worth watching.
- DirectorHoward HawksStarsKirk DouglasDewey MartinElizabeth ThreattThe success of the journey focuses on keeping the Indian girl alive as well as themselves to complete trade with the Blackfeet.First off, "The Big Sky" is not a western. It's a story of relationships, complete with a love triangle. These conflicts are wrapped around lots of adventure and action. I really enjoyed the characters Jim Deakins (Kirk Douglas) and Uncle Zeb (Arthur Hunnicutt), they really made the movie work.
- DirectorJames MangoldStarsHugh JackmanWill Yun LeeTao OkamotoWolverine comes to Japan to meet an old friend whose life he saved years ago, and gets embroiled in a conspiracy involving yakuza and mutants. The Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) is fighting the demons that plague him and killing bad guys becomes an after thought. Loved the idea of getting insight into a troubled Wolverine, but the movie didn't deliver.
- DirectorVincente MinnelliStarsLana TurnerKirk DouglasWalter PidgeonAn unscrupulous movie producer uses an actress, a director and a writer to achieve success.Three different flashbacks from people that have been impacted by working with Jonathan Shields (Kirk Douglas). He is a movie producer that will do anything to make his movies. The film has it moments but mostly they are overly dramatic. It's still worth watching.
- DirectorMario CameriniStarsSilvana ManganoKirk DouglasAnthony QuinnA movie adaptation of Homer's second epic, that depicts Ulysses' efforts to return to his home after the end of ten years of war.I really enjoyed this movie when I was a kid, but it didn't hold up very well. The lip sinking reminds me of 70's Kung Fu movies. The scene where Ulysses turns down immortality had some great lines, but overall it was better as a childhood memory.
- DirectorRichard FleischerStarsKirk DouglasJames MasonPaul LukasA ship sent to investigate a wave of mysterious sinkings encounters the advanced submarine, the Nautilus, commanded by Captain Nemo. The special effects in this movie are surprisingly good considering it was made almost 60 years ago. It's a Disney movie and it's aimed at younger viewer, with simple over the top characters. It's a classic that can still be shared with kids.
- DirectorBryce WagonerStarsAmber LynnAsia CarreraBobby SlaytonAn exploration of the lives of several former adult performers who have retired from the porn industry. In my mind, porn as a business, raises the question. What happens to the people that star in these films? This movie takes a look at several ex-porn stars and their current life after porn. The movie was even handed in presenting the stories It went out of it's way to prevent any type of judgement. But with many of these ex-stars not honest with themselves how much of a real story could we really expect.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsKirk DouglasRalph MeekerAdolphe MenjouAfter a failed attack on a German position, a general orders three soldiers, chosen at random, court-martialed for cowardice and their commanding officer must defend them.Paths of Glory is one of Kirk Douglas best performances as Col Dax, working to save his men from being shot as cowards. Everything about the movie is well done. There is no bad acting, the pace, photography and dialogue are some of the best you’ll ever see. Scene after scene is more powerful than the one preceding. It’s a classic movie, deserving a place on anyone best movie list.
- DirectorKing VidorStarsKirk DouglasJeanne CrainClaire TrevorSharpshooting drifter Dempsey Rae comes back to Wyoming to work for beautiful rancher Reed Bowman. But Reed's plan to fence in her land's wide open spaces angers other ranchers and soon embroils Dempsey in a bloody range war.The role of Dempsey Rae really fits Kirk Douglas as the wandering cowboy, a real man's man. Dempsey is cowboy personified and while he has no roots, he does what he thinks is right at any cost. It's this style of hero that I grew up idolizing and it no surprise that I like watching this movie. The movie has several flaws, but overall one I really like watching.
- DirectorAndré De TothStarsKirk DouglasElsa MartinelliWalter MatthauA scout leading a wagon train through hostile Indian country unwittingly gets involved with a Sioux chief's daughter."The Indian Fighter" was filmed in Cinemascope and several of the scenes were created to take advantage of it. Walter Matthau does a good job playing the greedy trouble maker. Diana Douglas (Kirk Douglas's ex wife) plays the wagon train widow that tries to marry the Kirk Douglas character. Overall an average film, but if you like westerns it's worth watching.
- DirectorVincente MinnelliGeorge CukorStarsKirk DouglasAnthony QuinnJames DonaldThe life of brilliant but tortured artist Vincent van Gogh. This movie is Van Gogh's life story, it's told in a very dramatic and realistic fashion. Each scene provides a stark portrait of a mentally disturbed man and the beautiful art he created. I was surprised to see that Anthony Quinn won an Oscar for his performance as Gaugin. This movie made me sad, but is worth seeing.
- DirectorJohn SturgesStarsBurt LancasterKirk DouglasRhonda FlemingLawman Wyatt Earp and outlaw Doc Holliday form an unlikely alliance which culminates in their participation in the legendary Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. This movie is not really the story of the Gunfight at the OK Corral, it's more about the bromance between Earp (Bert Lancaster) and Doc Holliday (Kirk Douglas). If you're looking for a movie about the gunfight at the OK Corral, you should look elsewhere.
- DirectorJohn SturgesStarsKirk DouglasAnthony QuinnCarolyn JonesA marshal tries to bring the son of an old friend, an autocratic cattle baron, to justice for his role in the rape and murder of the marshal's Native American wife.Last Train from Gun Hill starts with a rape and ends with a gunfight. It's a classic western with both strong and weak characters driving the plot to it's enviable conclusion. Worth watching!
- DirectorRichard FleischerStarsKirk DouglasTony CurtisErnest BorgnineA slave and a Viking prince fight for the love of a captive princess.Sword fighting and lots of action, but a convoluted plot. Loved the waterfall they sailed past entering and leaving their home port. Nothing in "The Viking" seemed realistic, it needed a better script. Many people see movie as a great classic, guess I'm not one.
- DirectorGuy HamiltonAlexander MackendrickStarsBurt LancasterKirk DouglasLaurence OlivierThe black sheep of a family and the local minister discover their true vocations during the Revolutionary War.Kirk Douglas commands every scene he's in and those he's not in, they seem flat. Maybe it was good casting, but Douglas nailed the part of Richard Dudgeon. The court marshal provided a great gentlemanly exchange between Laurence Olivier and Douglas.
This movie was better than I expected and I expect that I will watch it again. - DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodIan McKellenOrlando BloomA meek Hobbit from the Shire and eight companions set out on a journey to destroy the powerful One Ring and save Middle-earth from the Dark Lord Sauron.I read "The Lord of the Rings" while I was in middle school and waited years for someone to make these books into a movie worth watching. The sheer size of this fantasy story makes the idea of a movie doing it justice, seem impossible. I watched the extended version and it was 3.5 hours long. Even knowing the story and seeing the movie several times before, I didn't get board. The scenery and visual effects are amazing. While it's missing a couple of my favorite characters (Tom Bombadil) it still stays close to the book. I'm sure have read the books makes seeing the movie even better, because you already know the players. Great lead into a truly epic story.
