movies i really, really loved. Or had significance in my life. Some of these movies are not technically "good". Go cry about it.
I don't want to be an over-appreciator and add too many movies here, I have a huge watchlist because a lot of them are movies I want to see.
I also tried to write captions for why I chose movies and/or why you should watch them. But, it sorta failed. I also added TV shows because I don't wanna make a separate "favorite TV shows" list. I also decided to put it in loose order of most-least universal appeal.

Votes: 916,923 | Gross: $130.10M
One of the best on here. Full of themes, but I won't write what they are so that viewers can interpret for themselves. Beautiful cinematography, acting and script. You'll be absorbed for the entire movie.

Great story, and every shot is pleasing to the eye.

Timeless, feel-good movie. I feel bad for anyone who still hasn't seen it.

Very relatable, and fun in an unsettling way to see Nick Cage in a semi-serious role.

Classic Miyazaki movie, brings people together because so many people enjoy this movie.

R | 102 min | Drama
The drug-induced utopias of four Coney Island people are shattered when their addictions run deep.
Votes: 643,599 | Gross: $3.64M
Yeah basically I just like movies that make me emotional. It's about drug abuse, and parallels prescription drugs with street drugs.

Inspired by a true story, a comedy centered on a 27-year-old guy who learns of his cancer diagnosis, and his subsequent struggle to beat the disease.
Votes: 288,486 | Gross: $35.01M
I don't remember this movie too well. But I remember thinking it was one of the best movies I'd ever seen, so it earns a spot here (I also put it on here when I still remembered it)
8. Workaholics (2011–2017)
TV-14 | 22 min | Comedy
A single-camera comedy featuring three friends who work together as telemarketers from 9 to 5, and live together from 5 to 9.
Fun fact: one time I got grounded for an entire month of summer and just watched this at home a lot while my social skills and connections to loved ones rotted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One of the best comedies out there.
9. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005– )
TV-MA | 22 min | Comedy
Five friends with big egos and slightly arrogant attitudes are the proprietors of an Irish bar in Philadelphia.
Another one of the best sitcoms ever. Well, I don't really watch that many sitcoms. But this show manages to still be funny 8 seasons in, props to them.

Votes: 110,349 | Gross: $2.20M
If I try to talk about why this is good, I'll talk for a long time. All three hours will pull you in. Watch it. Also, one of the few good LGBT movies-- if you've ever tried to find a good gay/bi/trans movie, you know what I'm talking about.
11. Skins (2007–2013)
TV-MA | 46 min | Drama
The story of a group of British teens who are trying to grow up and find love and happiness despite questionable parenting and teachers who more want to be friends (and lovers) rather than authority figures.
Everyone identifies with parts of some characters, good soundtrack, well shot. Generations 1 and 2 are the best, but Gen 3 and season 7 are still worth watching.

A pretty, popular teenager can't go out on a date until her ill-tempered older sister does.

I actually didn't finish watching this movie. But I put it on here because I really liked the first 1/3 of it, and I'm not removing it. Deal.

In Bodeen, Texas, an indie-rock loving misfit finds a way of dealing with her small-town misery after she discovers a roller derby league in nearby Austin.
Votes: 58,679 | Gross: $13.04M
This movie made me realize how important it is to have more female characters in casts. It's so empowering to see a movie of mainly girls.

After a stint in a mental institution, former teacher Pat Solitano moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Things get more challenging when Pat meets Tiffany, a mysterious girl with problems of her own.
Votes: 584,473 | Gross: $132.09M
Deals with mental illness in a unique way, multidimensional characters. Cute romance n shiz. Wow I just said shiz, is it 2005 again? Can I say that?
17. Alpha Dog (2006)
R | 122 min | Biography, Crime, Drama
Johnny and a couple pals kidnap Jake's 15-year-old brother, Zach, then assigns his buddy Frankie to be Zach's minder. They develop a brotherly friendship. Zach parties with his captors as things begin to spin out of control.
Votes: 92,105 | Gross: $15.23M
Two main reasons it is on here: 1. I have an inside joke about it "*beep* YOU LADIES" 2. Anton Yelchin is sexy Oh also it's based on a true story which makes it all the more intense. It's different than any other movie I have seen, and Justin Timberlake being white trash is an essential life experience. What bothers me is that in the true story, the people who are involved in "weed and alcohol" here are also dealing/do hard drugs, mainly valium. I dislike that they omitted that from the movie.
18. Towelhead (2007)
R | 124 min | Drama
A young Arab-American girl struggles with her sexual obsession, a bigoted Army reservist and her strict father during the Gulf War.
Votes: 10,751 | Gross: $0.37M
Discusses sexual trauma, family problems, and not belonging. Imperfect, realistic characters. Very heavy film that will dig into your heart.
19. Mysterious Skin (2004)
Unrated | 105 min | Drama, Mystery
A teenage hustler and a young man obsessed with alien abductions cross paths, together discovering a horrible, liberating truth.
Votes: 60,304 | Gross: $0.70M
Another dark movie about sexual abuse. Pulls you in. Also you get to see JGL get it on with many-a-guy. I recently discovered that it isn't so good the second time, but it's worth watching once for sure, and perhaps others will find rewatch quality in it.
20. Orgazmo (1997)
NC-17 | 94 min | Comedy, Sci-Fi
Naive young Mormon Joe Young is recruited to act in porn movies.
Votes: 31,739 | Gross: $0.58M
Written by the creator of South Park and the Book of Mormon Musical. Poking fun at Mormons is always a good time.
21. Wristcutters: A Love Story (2006)
R | 88 min | Comedy, Drama, Fantasy
A film set in a strange afterlife way station that has been reserved for people who have committed suicide.
Votes: 49,140 | Gross: $0.32M
More emotional movies!! I loved this movie as an angsty 15-year-old. In this movie, there's an afterlife where people who kill themselves get sent to-- and it is just a more boring version of life.
22. The L Word (2004–2009)
TV-MA | 50 min | Drama, Romance
Follows the lives and loves of a small, close-knit group of lesbians living in Los Angeles as well as the friends and family members that either support or loathe them.
I watched this series when I first moved to the East Coast with no queer friends, and needed an outlet for all my gay energy. But really, it just gave me more gay energy and an obsession with Shane. C'est la vie.
23. Charlie Bartlett (2007)
R | 97 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance
A rich kid becomes the self-appointed psychiatrist to the student body of his new high school.
Votes: 58,953 | Gross: $3.95M
I didn't realize until the third time I watched, but there is some corny teen angst. Still, very heartfelt movie with wonderful actors. I don't know why I like it so much, I just do. Was my first "favorite movie" ever.
24. Naissance des pieuvres (2007)
85 min | Drama, Romance
Summer in a new suburb outside Paris. Nothing to do but look at the ceiling. Marie, Anne and Floriane are 15. Their paths cross in the corridors at the local swimming pool, where love and desire make a sudden, dramatic appearance.
Votes: 7,532 | Gross: $0.08M
An honest movie about young girls discovering sexuality. Part of why I liked it was the different rhythm it had from American movies. Oh yeah it's French, by the way.
25. Middle of Nowhere (2008)
R | 95 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance
An irresponsible mother blows her eldest daughter's college fund on her youngest daughter's modeling campaign.
Another corny "identity-seeking" movie with Anton Yelchin that I like for no particular reason.
26. Mary and Max (2009)
Not Rated | 92 min | Animation, Comedy, Drama
A tale of friendship between two unlikely pen pals: Mary, a lonely, eight-year-old girl living in the suburbs of Melbourne, and Max, a forty-four-year old, severely obese man living in New York.
