Cannes Diary: 20133 of 21
5/22 As the crowds and the industry started to drift out of Cannes, once again the clouds and the rain drifted in, soaking the spirits of everyone around. Serge Losique, a longtime festival attendee and the founder of the Montreal Film Festival said that in his thirty years of coming to Cannes he's never seen it rain so much or so hard.
There's still more to cover though, particularly the awards this weekend. Asghar Farhadi's Le Passe is still the odds-on favorite for the Palme d'Or, though many speak up for Behind the Candelabra, though its ties to TV--it's an HBO movie--seem to have hobbled it a bit. Owen Gleiberman of "Entertainment Weekly" thought they'd come up with some special prize for the film if it ended up conspicuously empty-handed. It certainly deserves some recognition though I think that comes to Michael Douglas in the Acting Category. Talk has subsided about Inside Llewyn Davis being in the running and some would even, in hushed tones, bring up Only God Forgives. But it seems unlikely to be Jury President, Steven Spielberg's, cup of tea. The Great Beauty is also brought up, but mostly as a fond recollection not a contender.
