Favourite Leonardo DiCaprio Moviesby kanimaki | created - 20 Apr 2013 | updated - 18 May 2013 | Public
Recently I have been watching (or rewatching) Leonardo DiCaprio's vast list of movies and found some to be more interesting and/or well acted than others. Here are my favourites of his films, not judged solely on his acting but also on the overall appeal of the film to me.

My all-time favourite. When it was released in theatres I watched it 9 times in the span of 2 months due to so many factors. The storyline, Cillian Murphy, Ellen Page's role, Marion Cotillard, the magnificent music, the final airport scene, etc. After it came out in DVD I watched it a few more times in its entirety and even up until now, almost 3 years later, I watch bits and pieces of it every now and then. This cast is perfect.
2. What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)
PG-13 | 118 min | Drama
After his father's death, Gilbert has to care for his mentally disabled brother, Arnie, and his morbidly obese mother, which is suddenly challenged when love walks into his life.
Votes: 185,150 | Gross: $9.17M
One of the first films that made me sit up and take note of Leo. I initially watched it for Johnny Depp but Leo turned out to be the star of this film. My favourite performance of Leo.
3. The Aviator (2004)
PG-13 | 170 min | Biography, Drama, History
A biopic depicting the early years of legendary Director and aviator Howard Hughes' career from the late 1920s to the mid 1940s.
Votes: 287,096 | Gross: $102.61M
I didn't watch this film in one go. The first twenty minutes or so kind of dragged so I paused it and only returned to it a few weeks later. And I'm so glad I did. Leo's performance in the second half of the movie was enthralling and by this film (his second nomination) he definitely got robbed of an Academy Award.
4. Django Unchained (2012)
R | 165 min | Drama, Western
With the help of a German bounty hunter, a freed slave sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner.
Votes: 1,086,828 | Gross: $162.81M
I really, really liked Leo's performance in this, and the dialogue between Christoph and Jamie's characters. Leo was deliciously over the top. My favourite scene was actually the study room scene right before Leo's character asks Christoph's character to shake hands.
5. The Great Gatsby (2013)
PG-13 | 143 min | Drama, Romance
A writer and wall street trader, Nick, finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle of his millionaire neighbor, Jay Gatsby.
Votes: 399,226 | Gross: $144.84M
I'll be very shallow and say that the hugest reason I liked this film was because of how Leo looked in this. His facial expressions in his first few scenes, during and after the party, were such turn-ons. I also utterly loved the way his face completely lit up at the scene where he was having fun flinging his wardrobe contents down at Daisy. Nowadays it's so rare to see Leo's fun happy face in his films. Leo looked his best in the beige sweater shirt in the scene where Daisy and Nick tour Gatsby's house for the first time. It has only been showing here for 4 days and I've already seen it twice in theatres and am planning to see it again very soon. A remarkable presentation and performance.
6. The Basketball Diaries (1995)
R | 102 min | Biography, Crime, Drama
A teenager finds his dreams of becoming a basketball star threatened after he free falls into the harrowing world of drug addiction.
Votes: 87,562 | Gross: $2.42M
Leo looked so young in this even though he was supposed to be about 20 when he filmed this. The part where he was forced to quit cold turkey was my favourite.
7. Revolutionary Road (2008)
R | 119 min | Drama, Romance
A young couple living in a Connecticut suburb during the mid-1950s struggle to come to terms with their personal problems while trying to raise their two children.
Votes: 164,125 | Gross: $22.91M
For this I like the storyline and strongly relate to the feeling of being stuck in a place with such a yearning to get out. My favourite Kate Winslet role. She was amazing in this.
8. Catch Me If You Can (2002)
PG-13 | 141 min | Biography, Crime, Drama
The story of Frank Abagnale Jr., before his 19th birthday, successfully forged millions of dollars' worth of checks while posing as a Pan Am pilot, a doctor, and legal prosecutor as a seasoned and dedicated FBI agent pursues him.
Votes: 624,026 | Gross: $164.62M
Somehow I watched this twice even though it didn't leave as big of an impression on me compared to, say, Titanic, which isn't even one of my favourite films. There was just something about Leo's acting and presence that kept drawing me into this film. It's due for a rewatch soon.
9. Blood Diamond (2006)
R | 143 min | Adventure, Drama, Thriller
A fisherman, a smuggler, and a syndicate of businessmen match wits over the possession of a priceless diamond.
Votes: 434,396 | Gross: $57.37M
The entire film was just brilliant even though I didn't quite like Leo's accent in this. Brilliant cast especially the boy who played Dia. Michael Sheen also looked great in his cameo.
