36ª Mostra - 2012

Movies watched in the 36th São Paulo International Film Festival

Running from October 19th to November 2nd, the traditional São Paulo International Film Festival will take place in São Paulo. For two weeks, it will screen around 390 titles from more than 60 countries with a diverse range of cultures, utilizing 28 venues, including museums and cultural institutions spread throughout the city. The selection this year managed to capture what world cinema is producing today as well as the main tendencies, themes, narratives, and aesthetics produced around the world.

The 36th São Paulo International Film Festival consists of five sections: New Directors Competition, showcasing films made by directors who have at most two films in their filmography (the films to receive the best audience voting results will be screened for the International Jury, which later selects the one that will receive the Bandeira Paulista Award); International Perspective, presenting an overview of recent world cinema; Retrospectives, a section with complete (or near complete) filmographies of important (and sometimes unknown) directors; Special Screenings – consisting of classics or films by directors who are being paid tribute to by the Mostra; and Mostra Brasil, premiering Brazilian films in São Paulo. All of the Brazilian films compete for the Itamaraty Prize, but the ones having their national premiere made by directors currently on their first or second feature are also in the New Directors Competition.
