I saw part of this documentary when it aired on TCM a few years ago. I wasn't able to watch the entire 15 part series because I was working at the time and also, I had no clue it was on until I stumbled across it one evening. After watching a couple of episodes, I knew I had to see this series in it's entirety. Anyone who loves the movies should make this required viewing. - DirectorMark CousinsStarsMark CousinsJean-Michel FrodonAgnes de MilleThe first two decades of cinema, 1895-1918; its invention in New Jersey and Lyon and its development from a gimmick to a language through the innovation of many technicians and artists.W/S 06/06/2019
Season 1, Episode 1
This first installment of the 15 part series explores the birthplaces of the origins of the movies. Contrary to popular belief, it was not in Hollywood. It began in New Jersey with Thomas A. Edison and in France with the Lumiere brothers. It also delves into the beginning of technical achievements, i.e. editing, special effects, lighting, filming techniques and even the use of widescreen cinema. We discover the first directors, actors and writers. The women in the film business today really should watch this informative documentary. They would definitely learn a thing or two and hopefully stop whining about how women aren't recognized by the film industry. Locations of the original cinemas and the first film studios are shown then and now. - DirectorMark CousinsStarsMark CousinsStanley DonenNorman Lloyd1918-1928; the establishment of Hollywood as an industry that produced optimism, romanticism and happy endings; the filmmakers in America and Europe who defied Hollywood fantasy to show a harsh reality in cinema.W/S 08/16/2019
Season 1, Episode 2
This episode depicts the rise of Hollywood and the beginnings of the studio system during the early 20's. MGM, Paramount, Warner Bros. and Universal were all started by immigrants from all over the world. We see the rise of silent film stars Buster Keaton, Charles Chaplin and Harold Lloyd. Sadly, the demise of Buster Keaton and Charles Chaplin are also shown. Hollywood and the studio system are talked about as a fragile bauble creating worlds of fantasy that could break at any given moment. The fantasy gave way to a new breed of director that told stories based on realism. At this time the documentary film is also born with Nanook of the North. In a sad footnote, Nanook died a year later from starvation.
