- DirectorPhilippe de BrocaStarsDaniel AuteuilFabrice LuchiniVincent PerezThe Comte de Gonzague schemes against his cousin, the Duc de Nevers, even though he is the Duke's heir and will inherit his estates. The Count has kept secret the existence of the Duke's bastard, recently born. When the Duke learns of his child, he journeys to wed the mother, a baron's daughter, in her father's isolated chateau. The occupants of the castle are surprised and murdered by the Count and his men. The only ones to escape are the Duke's friend, the skilled swordsman Lagardère, and the infant, a girl, now the rightful heiress to the Duke's vast fortune. The Count believes the pair to have drowned, when in fact they have been concealed by a travelling troupe of Italian players. Twenty years pass. The Count has discovered that the two survive and seeks to have them slain. But Lagardère gains the confidence of the Count, and employment as his bookkeeper, through his clever disguise as a hunch-back...Lagardère and his teenage foster-daughter Aurore fall in love. The creepy thing is, he raised her as if she were his own daughter. But well, the sensuous people of the 18th century ...
- DirectorGeorge MelfordStarsRudolph ValentinoAgnes AyresRuth MillerA charming Arabian sheik becomes infatuated with an adventurous, modern-thinking Englishwoman and abducts her to his home in the Saharan desert.Sigh. Where do I start? This is the story of an adventuress who is abducted and mistreated by a stranger. In addition, he is constantly trying to rape her. Guess what? She falls in love with him. Soooo romantic!
- DirectorGeorge FitzmauriceStarsRudolph ValentinoVilma BánkyGeorge FawcettThe son of the sheik and a dancing girl fall in love, but when he is made to believe she has betrayed him he seeks revenge. This movie, a sequel of "The Sheik" (1920), is very similar to its predecessor. And just as obnoxious.
- DirectorVincente MinnelliStarsGene KellyLeslie CaronOscar LevantThree friends struggle to find work in Paris. Things become more complicated when two of them fall in love with the same woman. The charming love story between Jerry and Lisa basically begins as a case of persistent stalking. Lise is lucky to eventually fall in love with the admirer who obsessively runs after her ...
- DirectorPaul VerhoevenStarsRutger HauerJennifer Jason LeighTom BurlinsonIn medieval Europe, a young girl from a noble family is obsessed with her captors - commoners.Damsel Agnes has to use her sensual charms to survive in the hands of brutal mercenaries. This is unsettling enough, but she doesn't seem to make a final decision whether she secretly likes Martin, the man who raped her, or whether she wants him dead. For Martin, the situation is similar: He's constantly fluctuating between dominating Agnes and being dominated by her. The ever-shifting balance of power in their bold love-hate-relationship is equally complex, gripping and disturbing.
- DirectorFritz LangStarsRay MillandMarjorie ReynoldsCarl EsmondStephen Neale has just been released from an asylum during World War II in England when he accidentally stumbles onto a deadly Nazi spy plot and tries to stop it.The deep feelings between Stephen Neale and Carla Hilfe come out of the blue and are therefore unbelievable. But since the whole movie is kind of gaga, who cares?
- DirectorRandal KleiserStarsJohn TravoltaOlivia Newton-JohnStockard ChanningGood girl Sandy Olsson and greaser Danny Zuko fell in love over the summer. When they unexpectedly discover they're now in the same high school, will they be able to rekindle their romance?Sandy and Danny are a cute couple, but (following the unwritten rules of high school love) they can't be together until one of them adapts to the lifestyle of the other. Otherwise, they won't be accepted by their peer group anymore ... Our bold hero Danny tries to change his style (to sporty clothing), but fortunately for him, Sandy decides to dress in flashy clothes and act rebelliously. Movie magic happens, and voilà: You're the one that I want!
- DirectorMichael GordonStarsRock HudsonDoris DayTony RandallAn interior decorator and a playboy songwriter share a telephone party line and size each other up.So many things are wrong with this love story, you have to see it for yourself to believe it. The relations between the genders really changed since the 1950s and 1960s - fortunately!
- DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsTom HanksRobin WrightGary SiniseThe history of the United States from the 1950s to the '70s unfolds from the perspective of an Alabama man with an IQ of 75, who yearns to be reunited with his childhood sweetheart. Not only is Jenny constantly playing with Forrest's feelings, she also sleeps with him although he has the mind of a child. She basically abuses him because he clearly doesn't really understand what is going on. Although Forrest is fond of his 'girlfriend', the whole Forrest-and-Jenny-'romance' leaves behind an uncomfortable feeling.
- DirectorSydney PollackStarsRobert RedfordFaye DunawayCliff RobertsonA bookish CIA researcher in Manhattan finds all his co-workers dead, and must outwit those responsible until he figures out who he can really trust.Does anybody understand why Kathy suddenly falls in love with her kidnapper Joseph? Of course the audience already knows he's a nice guy, but this doesn't make him less terrifying for Kathy. Her feelings of affection come all of a sudden and with zero romantic chemistry between her and Joseph. Maybe a very effective case of Stockholm Syndrome?
- DirectorMorten TyldumStarsJennifer LawrenceChris PrattMichael SheenA malfunction in a sleeping pod on a spacecraft traveling to a distant colony planet wakes one passenger 90 years early.Long story short: Jim is basically a murderer who sentences Aurora to a slow, lonely death in their giant space ship - only because he wants her to be his girlfriend. Now, this could have been an interesting and controversial plot idea if only the script had paid more attention to the problematic psychological aspects of the couple's relationship, especially once Aurora finds out about Jims actions. Instead, the movie opts for a cheap kitschy romance with many unbelievable character decisions and simple answers. The storyline is still exciting and at times even funny, but the love story leaves a sour taste.
- DirectorFred C. NewmeyerSam TaylorStarsHarold LloydMildred DavisBill StrotherA boy leaves his small country town and heads to the big city to get a job. As soon as he makes it big his sweetheart will join him and marry him. His enthusiasm to get ahead leads to some interesting adventures. In the beginning, Harold and Mildred seem like a loving couple, but later Mildred is mainly interested in her boyfriend because he pretends to occupy a good position in a department store. Although Harold is at fault too (because he lies to her about his job), Mildred comes across as selfish and money-mad once she hears about Harolds alleged success. She is not supportive at all, even getting angry and disappointed with him when she sees him doing 'low quality work'. (In addition, she is messing up Harolds workplace just for fun, but that's the smallest problem about her.)
- DirectorBrad SilberlingStarsNicolas CageMeg RyanAndre BraugherAn angel on Earth, a doctor unable to believe, a patient with a secret, a love story made in Heaven. This is true love, blessed by the heavens: Seth uses his celestial powers to secretly stalk Maggie (he is even there when she is taking a bath). It's his job as a guardian angel to watch over people, but not to keep a jealous watch over one single person ... Maggie, in return, slaps him and cuts him with a knife because she suspects he is a supernatural being. Later she practically blackmails Seth into becoming human by telling him about her marriage proposal. Very romantic indeed.
- DirectorVolker SchlöndorffStarsSam ShepardJulie DelpyBarbara SukowaApril 1957: Rational engineer Faber's plane crashes in Mexico. He learns that he became a dad in 1938. He takes a ship from NYC to France and meets cute, young Sabeth. Fate?A man falls in love with a woman who turns out to be his unknown daughter. Drama ensues. Luckily, the storyline (based on the complex book by Max Frisch) is substantial and doesn't rely on cheap thrills. Still, the whole 'love story' is very gross once the father-daughter-relationship is revealed.
- DirectorBrian De PalmaStarsCliff RobertsonGeneviève BujoldJohn LithgowA wealthy New Orleans businessman becomes obsessed with a young woman who resembles his wife.Michael Courtland falls in love with a young woman who is in fact his supposedly dead daughter. But don't worry, Sandra isn't clueless. She knows Michael is her father but marries him anyway - for revenge! A strange happy ending follows. Creepy-crazy stuff that is handled carefully (albeit sometimes exaggeratedly) by the director, script and actors.
- DirectorF.W. MurnauStarsGeorge O'BrienJanet GaynorMargaret LivingstonA sophisticated city woman seduces a farmer and convinces him to murder his wife and join her in the city, but he ends up rekindling his romance with his wife when he changes his mind at the last moment."The Wife" and "The Man" in this splendid movie are absolutely adorable but have a really complicated relationship which is fluctuating between drama and comedy. At the beginning, the weak-minded farmer decides to kill his spouse and then move away with his chic but ruthless lover. In the last moment, he does not have the heart to drown his meek wife. Instead, the two of them take a trip to the city and spend the most wonderful day of their lives together. Afterwards, they are happier than ever.
- DirectorAlain ResnaisStarsDelphine SeyrigGiorgio AlbertazziSacha PitoëffIn a strange and isolated chateau, a man becomes acquainted with a woman and insists that they have met before.Since the whole movie is extraordinarily strange, it's no wonder the love story is strange too. So watch and decide for yourself: Who are these people? Where are they? Which one of them is telling the truth? And what on earth is going on?
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsJames MasonShelley WintersSue LyonA middle-aged college professor becomes infatuated with a 14-year-old girl.I guess there's no need to write why this is a messed up 'love story'. After all, this is "Lolita".
- DirectorJonathan LevineStarsNicholas HoultTeresa PalmerJohn MalkovichAfter a highly unusual zombie saves a still-living girl from an attack, the two form a relationship that sets in motion events that might transform the entire lifeless world.Basically a black-humoured love story about necrophilia: A teenage girl falls for an affectionate zombie (oh, and by the way, he has devoured her former boyfriend).
- DirectorAlbert LewinStarsJames MasonAva GardnerNigel PatrickA seductive woman falls in love with a mysterious ship's captain. An effusive romance that folllows a dreamlike logic. The actors are charismatic, but the shallow characters and the surreal development of their destructive passion result in an unbelieveable love story. (Besides, Pandora is an insensitive, selfish woman who finds delight in playing with other people's feelings or pressuring them to destroy things they love. Very unsympathetic. Also, who else would skinny-dip and then boldly enter a stranger's boat?)
- DirectorPaul WegenerCarl BoeseStarsPaul WegenerAlbert SteinrückErnst DeutschIn 16th-century Prague, a rabbi creates the Golem - a giant creature made of clay. Using sorcery, he brings the creature to life in order to protect the Jews of Prague from persecution. This movie contains one of the stiffest love scenes ever. The whole sequence - the staging and the way it is performed by the actors - seems just strange and absolutely stilted. A weirdly exaggerated scene, even for a movie which is as expressionistic as this one.
- DirectorStanley DonenStarsAudrey HepburnFred AstaireKay ThompsonAn impromptu fashion shoot at a book store brings about a new fashion model discovery in the shop clerk. After a short chat, photographer Dick impulsively surprises bookseller Jo with a kiss. Nevertheless, the two are complete strangers, and although Jo secretly likes the peck, this sweet scene only works in the fantastic world of musicals - in real life, Dick's spontaneous kiss would be considered sexual harassment.
- DirectorBertrand TavernierStarsSophie MarceauPhilippe NoiretClaude RichFrance, 1654: D'Artagnan's girl grows up in a convent. When the mother superior is murdered, Eloïse suspects a plan to murder the king and hopes to prevent this and revenge the murder by finding her father and the 3 musketeers. No buildup, no chemistry, no development - the sudden feelings between Eloïse and Quentin lack any credibility and seem like little more than a cheap screenplay contrivance because "every swashbuckler film needs a love story". Sadly, without proper care, the romance is nothing but hollow words, similar to the laundry list which gets the whole adventure going.
- DirectorLotte ReinigerCarl KochA handsome prince rides a flying horse to faraway lands and embarks on magical adventures, which include befriending a witch, meeting Aladdin, battling demons and falling in love with a princess.A wonderful fairy tale, but still a creepy lovestory. It all starts when Achmed watches Pari Banu while she is taking a bath, then he steals her clothes and kidnaps her. She nevertheless falls in love with him after he confesses his love to her. Within the plot, it doesn't seem too offensive because of 'fable logic', but as soon as you soberly judge Achmed's actions, it becomes obvious that kinky stuff like this is only romantic if it happens in a fairy tale.
- DirectorWes CravenStarsLouis JourdanAdrienne BarbeauRay WiseAfter a violent incident with a special chemical, a research scientist is turned into a swamp plant monster. This love story comes all of a sudden - blink and you'll miss it. It starts with a surprise kiss out of scientific excitement (which is kinda okay), but later suddenly develops into 'real' love that remains completely unbelievable. Curiously enough, the main purpose of this harum-scarum love story seems to be the opportunity to show some skinny-dipping.
- DirectorBilly WilderStarsJack LemmonShirley MacLaineFred MacMurrayA Manhattan insurance clerk tries to rise in his company by letting its executives use his apartment for trysts, but complications and a romance of his own ensue. This movie is funny, but as a love story it doesn't really work out because only one of the two lovers attracts the audience's attention. While Baxter is an interesting, well-rounded character, Fran's purpose in the story seems to amount to nothing more than being pretty, teasing and indecisive. Oh, and suicidal. In short, she's a weak, one-dimensional character. This wouldn't be a problem if the film focused on Baxter and his quest to win Fran's heart. But since both characters get a lot of screen time on their own, Fran always comes off second best compared to her psychologically convincing lover.
- DirectorArchie MayoStarsLeslie HowardHumphrey BogartBette DavisA waitress, a hobo and a bank robber get mixed up at a lonely diner in the desert. In the twinkling of an eye, Alan Squier and Gabrielle 'Gabby' Maple go from complete strangers to yearning lovers - the kind of romance you normally only witness in a fairy tale. Strangely enough, it works perfectly well. Due to the talent of the actors and the dashing script, this love story functions successfully: The couple has a sensitive chemistry that makes their hurried romance believable despite its exaggerated disposition.
- DirectorLuchino ViscontiStarsDirk BogardeRomolo ValliMark BurnsWhile recovering in Venice, sickly composer Gustav von Aschenbach becomes dangerously fixated with teenager Tadzio. The story of a middle-aged composer stalking a teenage boy who is kinda enjoying the older man's attention: A very creepy 'almost-love-story' in a nevertheless thought-provoking, morbidly beautiful movie.
- DirectorSofia CoppolaStarsNicole KidmanKirsten DunstElle FanningThe unexpected arrival of a wounded Union soldier at a girls school in Virginia during the American Civil War leads to jealousy and betrayal.John McBurney is basically flirting with every woman around him, and it never becomes clear if he truly cares for one of them or what his motives are. In turn, the women also hide their emotions from each other, though they sense that their peaceful school life is slowly going awry because of the soldier they all desire. The audience is never able to figure out what the characters are really thinking and feeling. Oddly enough, the final murder of the only man in the house seems like a logical solution to the ever-growing sexual tension within the school community.
- DirectorDon SiegelStarsClint EastwoodGeraldine PageElizabeth HartmanWhile recuperating in a Confederate girls' boarding school, a Union soldier cons his way into each of the lonely women's hearts, causing them to turn on each other, and eventually, on him.Similar to the remake, there are a lot of ambiguities, secrets and desires that create sexual tensions between the shady characters. The original movie, however, is more open about the thoughts and motives of the characters (especially when it comes to McBurney), so it's a bit 'less strange' than the remake.
- DirectorDonald PetrieStarsSandra BullockMichael CaineBenjamin BrattAn F.B.I. Agent must go undercover in the Miss United States beauty pageant to prevent a group from bombing the event. The romantic chemistry between Gracie and Eric is so inexistent it basically tends to negative infinty. The fact that Eric is an arrogant jerk doesn't really help.
- DirectorCharles ChaplinStarsCharles ChaplinMack SwainTom MurrayA prospector goes to the Klondike during the 1890s gold rush in hopes of making his fortune, and is smitten with a girl he sees in a dance hall.Poor Charlie! First, Georgia is carelessly trampling on her admirer's feelings (instead of simply turning him down), but then, all of a sudden, she changes her mind and pities him. Her unsteady behavior comes across as selfish and heartless instead of proud and independent. The lone prospector, in turn, bears no enmity because she is oh so beautiful. In short, this is a superficial, unrealistic love story solely based on looks and a fickle behavior. Its main purpose is to make the audience feel sorry for Chaplin's character (and of course, everyone feels sorry for him!), but the whole romance isn't very touching. (Love stories like these are actually quite common in silent films, but because this movie is a masterpiece, it seems especially distracting.)
- DirectorFritz LangStarsBrigitte HelmAlfred AbelGustav FröhlichIn a futuristic city sharply divided between the working class and the city planners, the son of the city's mastermind falls in love with a working-class prophet who predicts the coming of a savior to mediate their differences. This is one of my favourite love stories in one of my favourite movies, although I have to admit that it features one of the most sudden 'loves at first sight' in cinematic history (outside of fairy tales). But thanks to the talent of everyone involved, the result is simply wonderful and yearn-worthy.
- DirectorJulie TaymorStarsAnthony HopkinsJessica LangeOsheen JonesTitus returns victorious from war, only to plant the seeds of future turmoil for himself and his family. An emperor marrying his high-ranked prisoner of war he has known for about five minutes? What could possibly go wrong? (Though it is unclear if Tamora likes her husband or if she only likes the power her marriage is giving her, I consider this a worthy entry in the list of strange 'romances' because both spouses seem somehow attracted to each other - though at the same time they have their own hidden agenda with regard to the marriage ...)
- DirectorLuc BessonStarsJean RenoGary OldmanNatalie Portman12-year-old Mathilda is reluctantly taken in by Léon, a professional assassin, after her family is murdered. An unusual relationship forms as she becomes his protégée and learns the assassin's trade.Although the two main characters never even share a kiss, this almost-love-story between a 12-year-old orphan girl and a taciturn hitman gives off some seriously creepy 'Lolita vibes', especially because Mathilda is basically flinging herself at the more or less reluctant Léon, even referring to him as her lover and demanding that he should sleep with her. Although they both seem strangely innocent, the whole story would have been much less disturbing if Mathilda's character had been a few years older.
- DirectorHenry JoostAriel SchulmanStarsEmma RobertsDave FrancoEmily MeadeA high school senior finds herself immersed in an online game of truth or dare, where her every move starts to become manipulated by an anonymous community of "watchers."Vee surprisingly kisses a complete stranger without his consent. Later it is revealed that Ian knew what would happen, but still ... Vee did not get that when she kissed him. Luckily, the two of them eventually fall in love with each other - I guess in real life it wouldn't always work out that well.
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsRami MalekLucy BoyntonGwilym LeeThe story of the legendary British rock band Queen and lead singer Freddie Mercury, leading up to their famous performance at Live Aid (1985).This love story begins with a big no-no, when Freddie gropes Jim after a party. But Jim tells Freddie that his action was not okay, and the two of them eventually become a loving couple.
- DirectorMichael Dudok de WitStarsEmmanuel GarijoTom HudsonBaptiste GoyA man is shipwrecked on a deserted island and encounters a big red turtle, which changes his life.Since this is a love story between a castaway and a turtle that later turns into a mysterious woman, the whole romance is inherently quirky, like many fairy tales are. But the really strange thing is how it all begins: The turtle repeatedly deters the man from leaving the island on a self-made raft - by destroing it. Later the frustrated castaway bashes the turtles head with a big stick. Once the animal dies, the man feels sorry for his deed. Luckily, the dead turtle metamorphoses into a woman and the two of them quickly fall in love. Truly an odd romance, even for a metaphorical story like this one.
- DirectorVirgil WidrichStarsLaurence RuppAmira CasarJohann Adam OestWhen the ambitious Philip takes over the running of the family business from his father, he finds himself confronted by the mysterious reappearance of his dead ancestors. In the course of a long night, during which there is a murder, an illicit love affair and a game with false identities, Philip uncovers a closely guarded family secret. In this witty modern ghost story, young heir Philip (born in 1986) falls for his seductive stepgrandmother Renate (who died in 1938). The two form an odd couple, and even in the movie, Philip's cousin asks: What is worse, incest or necrophilia?
- DirectorMichael SpierigPeter SpierigStarsEthan HawkeSarah SnookNoah TaylorAs his last assignment, a temporal agent is tasked to travel back in time and prevent a bomb attack in New York in 1975. The hunt, however, turns out to be beyond the bounds of possibility. In this touching, mind-bendingly clever science fiction thriller, a transgender time traveler falls in love with his former female self. But then again, he also kidnaps 'himself' as a baby and shoots his criminal alter ego. So why not go on a date with himself respectively herself?
- DirectorJames CameronStarsArnold SchwarzeneggerLinda HamiltonMichael BiehnA human soldier is sent from 2029 to 1984 to stop an almost indestructible cyborg killing machine, sent from the same year, which has been programmed to execute a young woman whose unborn son is the key to humanity's future salvation.Like many time traveller movies, this one offers an absurd love story (apart from the fact that the guy fell in love with the girl just because he had seen her face on a photograph): Sarah becomes pregnant with her son John when she sleeps with Kyle, a time traveller from the post-apocalyptic future. Paradoxically, Kyle was sent back from 2029 to 1984 by the adult John to ensure Sarah would become pregant in order that John would be born to save humanity ... But hey, that movie rocks!
- DirectorFrank LloydStarsCharles LaughtonClark GableFranchot ToneFirst mate Fletcher Christian leads a revolt against his sadistic commander, Captain Bligh, in this classic seafaring adventure, based on the real-life 1789 mutiny.Sailor Fletcher Christian falls in love with Tahitian Maimiti, despite huge cultural differences and not being able to properly communicate with her (because they don't know each others' languages). A very unbelievable romance (although it is based on a true story) ... But hey, the two lovebirds know the language of love, and that one is universal!
- DirectorRon ClementsJohn MuskerStarsScott WeingerRobin WilliamsLinda LarkinA kind-hearted street urchin and a power-hungry Grand Vizier vie for a magic lamp that has the power to make their deepest wishes come true.In Disney movies, love at first sight is as common as talking animals. But even for a Disney movie, this romance between a thief and a princess unfolds all of a sudden. About five minutes after Aladdin and Jasmine have met each other, they already lean in for a kiss. Their love story mainly works because the audience already knows the characters and their motivations, otherwise the whole romance would seem too rushed.
- DirectorJoshua LoganStarsMarilyn MonroeDon MurrayArthur O'ConnellA naive but stubborn cowboy falls in love with a saloon singer and tries to take her away against her will to get married and live on his ranch in Montana.A disturbing 'romantic comedy' about a man who doesn't understand the word 'no'. After Chérie showed and told Beau that she has no intention of marrying him, he deals with this inconvenience the same way he deals with stubborn cattle, in hopes of 'taming' her. He harasses the songstress and even kidnaps her when she tries to escape. Although other people notice that Chérie is afraid of him, they downplay Beau's behaviour by treating it as nothing more than boyish pranks. Even worse, Chérie falls for the uncouth cowboy as soon as he acts just a tiny little bit more respectably.
- DirectorChris WalasStarsEric StoltzDaphne ZunigaLee RichardsonThe almost-human son of "Brundlefly" searches for a cure to his mutated genes while being monitored by a nefarious corporation that wishes to continue his father's experiments.Martin Brundle falls in love with his work colleague Beth Logan. A totally normal situation, unless you know that Martin, although he has the body of a young man, is actually only five years old - he just matures much faster than normal people because his DNA merged with that of a house fly. The situation is weird but okay because Martin also gained the intellect of an adult.
- DirectorJacques DemyStarsCatherine DeneuveJean MaraisJacques PerrinA fairy godmother helps a princess disguise and flee the kingdom so she won't have to marry the king who happens to be her father. In this sumptuously bizarre, tongue-in-cheek fairy tale, a king falls in love with his own daughter, because she is even more beautiful than his late wife. The confused princess, on the other hand, kinda likes the idea of marrying daddy - after all, he's very amiable and presents her with wonderful clothes ... Fortunately, both eventually fall in love with other people who are more suitable for them.
- DirectorJacques DemyStarsCatherine DeneuveGeorge ChakirisFrançoise DorléacTwo sisters leave their small seaside town of Rochefort in search of romance. Hired as carnival singers, one falls for an American musician, while the other must search for her ideal partner. This dreamish musical displays a fairy-tale like romance - and because of 'musical movie magic' it even works out, although the audience never even gets to see a scene where the two lovers meet! Delphine and Maxence both imagine a perfect partner and fall for their fantasy. Maxence doesn't even know if his beloved ideal of a woman even exists! But by chance, both are an excellent match for the other's vision. Now just one thing is missing: a random rendezvous ... If only true love were that easy in real life!
- DirectorAisling WalshStarsSally HawkinsEthan HawkeZachary BennettAn arthritic Nova Scotia woman works as a housekeeper while she hones her skills as an artist and eventually becomes a beloved figure in the community. This touching love story starts as an abusive employment relationship. Everett repeatedly insults Maud and at one point even slaps her because she confuses him and does a bad job cleaning his house. Nevetheless, he still wants to sleep with her ... Despite his grumpy behaviour, Maud likes her boss because he is the only person who treats her like an independent person. But it is only after the two outsiders learn how to communicate properly and cope with their feelings that Maudie's and Everett's romance really flourishes.
- DirectorWilliam OldroydStarsFlorence PughCosmo JarvisPaul HiltonIn 19th-century rural England, a young bride who has been sold into marriage discovers an unstoppable desire within herself as she enters into an affair with a worker on her estate. This furious affair between an aristocrat and a stable lad begins with a creepy almost-rape. Luckily (?), Katherine longs for love and passion, so she promptly falls for Sebastian and has consensual sex with him after he burst into her room. Nevetheless, their romance is a distant one, because they seem to have little in common except for mutual sexual attraction. It's no wonder Katherine quickly sacrifices her lover as soon as she is in danger of getting convicted of murder ...
- DirectorHany Abu-AssadStarsKate WinsletIdris ElbaBeau BridgesStranded after a tragic plane crash, two strangers must forge a connection to survive the extreme elements of a remote snow-covered mountain. When they realize help is not coming, they embark on a perilous journey across the wilderness.Alex (almost married) and Ben (grieving widower) fight for survival and then suddenly fall in love as soon as they spend five minutes in a nice little hovel? It must be the adrenaline ...
- DirectorSavi GabizonStarsElla ArmonyShai AviviShmil Ben AriA middle-aged Israeli bachelor is forced to evaluate his life choices when he discovers an ex-girlfriend had given birth to his son 20 years before, in this affecting drama from writer director Savi Gabizon. Not really a love story, because it all happens in the protagonists head - but during Ariel's dream you can witness one of the strangest threesomes in movie history ...
- DirectorGary TrousdaleKirk WiseStarsPaige O'HaraRobby BensonJesse CortiA prince cursed to spend his days as a hideous monster sets out to regain his humanity by earning a young woman's love. The soon-to-be-lovers in this famour fairy tale first meet when Belle offers to replace her father as the Beast's prisoner. Certainly an unlikely start for a romance, but contrary to popular belief, I don't think Belle and the entchanted prince become attached to each other just because of Stockholm Syndrome: the two of them only fall in love after Beast isn't treating Belle as a prisoner anymore.
- DirectorBill CondonStarsEmma WatsonDan StevensLuke EvansA selfish Prince is cursed to become a monster for the rest of his life, unless he learns to fall in love with a beautiful young woman he keeps prisoner.See "Beauty and the Beast" (1991).
- DirectorClaudio FähStarsTom HopperRyan KwantenKen DukenA band of Vikings cross enemy lines and a panicked race begins. The losers will pay with their lives.Similar to "Beauty and the Beast", this movie tells the story of a group of northmen who take Princess Inghean hostage. It is a deed of despair for the stranded vikings who have to fight their way through enemy country. They don't treat their prisoner too bad, though, and later Inghean, learning that her father has forsaken her, even decides to voluntarily stay with her former foes. Only then, she and Asbjörn seem to really become fond of each other.
- DirectorMakoto ShinkaiStarsRyunosuke KamikiMone KamishiraishiRyo NaritaTwo teenagers share a profound, magical connection upon discovering they are swapping bodies. Things manage to become even more complicated when the boy and girl decide to meet in person. The main characters in this bittersweet comedy sure have a peculiar 'first date': They accidentally swap bodies! For a long time, they don't meet in person and only get to know each other by leading the other's life.
- DirectorBrad BirdJan PinkavaStarsBrad GarrettLou RomanoPatton OswaltA rat who can cook makes an unusual alliance with a young kitchen worker at a famous Paris restaurant.Rémy, the rat, forces two people to kiss each other (by guiding his human friend Linguini like a marionette). The guy is clearly surprised, and the woman, Colette, even reaches for her pepper spray, but then, luckily, movie magic sets in and they both decide the kiss is too good to stop. Still, this is a risky way to cancel a completely unromantic argument ...
- DirectorFrank CapraStarsRonald ColmanJane WyattEdward Everett HortonWhen a revered diplomat's plane is diverted and crashes in the peaks of Tibet, he and the other survivors are guided to an isolated monastery at Shangri-La, where they wrestle with the invitation to stay. How to get a suitable boyfriend, Shangri-La style: Sondra has read Robert's books and became impressed by them. Believing he could be an appropriate new leader of Shangri-La, she arranges for his abduction. Add a little bit of Hollywood magic, and they soon fall for each other ...
- DirectorKaspar HeidelbachStarsGötz GeorgeHannelore HogerCatrin StriebeckOn a seniors ride a bourgeois widow meets a proletarian man. Out of despair they marry right away without getting to know each other. Moving in with her, he brings a cat, which is a thorn in her eye and a synonym for the rough relationship.Margret's and Siegmar's marriage seems doomed from the start: Margret quickly aims for marriage, while Siegmar is reluctant all along. They marry nevertheless, but from day one, their contrasting character traits cause frictions. And soon, the plot delineates one of the most depressing psychographs of a marriage ever.
- DirectorJohn MiliusStarsWarren OatesBen JohnsonMichelle PhillipsJohn Dillinger and his gang go on a bank robbing spree across the midwest, but one G-Man is determined to bring him down. This love story is highly unbelievable because the plot doesn't provide enough psychological reasons for it: Dillinger kidnaps Billie, scares and beats her, so she runs away. Then the gangster captures her again, and a few scenes later she is genuinely in love with him (with no further explanation why).
- DirectorStephen DaldryStarsKate WinsletRalph FiennesBruno GanzPost-WWII Germany: Nearly a decade after his affair with an older woman came to a mysterious end, law student Michael Berg re-encounters his former lover as she defends herself in a war-crime trial. This movie is supposed to make you uncomfortable, and it certainly achieves its goal. It's the story of a 15-year-old teenager who is having an affair with an analphabetic tram conductor who's old enough to be his mother. To make matters worse, he later finds out she was a guard at a Nazi concentration camp.
- DirectorAlan RickmanStarsKate WinsletAlan RickmanStanley TucciTwo talented landscape artists become romantically entangled while building a garden in King Louis XIV's palace at Versailles. This love story seems superficial and hasty: It acceleretas from zero to a hundred in just a couple of restrained scenes. It's all lost in reverie, without build-up: Sabine and André never openly talk about their feelings, touch or kiss each other, and then suddenly they end up in bed together. Add the non-existing chemistry between the two actors, and you get a strangely restrained yet hurried romance.
- DirectorJean-Jacques AnnaudStarsEverett McGillRon PerlmanNicholas KadiThis story takes place in prehistoric time when three tribesmen search for a new fire source. The life of Stone Age people was rough, and so is this love story set 80'000 years ago. All actions may be normal for a caveman's way of thinking, but from todays view it's unsettling to witness a relationship that starts with rape.
- DirectorClaude ChabrolStarsBenoît MagimelLaura SmetAurore ClémentA hard-working young man meets and falls in love with his sister's bridesmaid. He soon finds out how disturbed she really is.From the beginning, Senta not only seems alarmingly impulsive but also excessively possessive. She manipulates Philippe by talking about neverending love although they have just met. He, on the other hand, deems her behaviour a little strange but can't resist her charms. Even when Philippe finds out that his lover is a murderess (and then reveals her crime to the police), he doesn't have the heart to leave her. A complex, tense story about a dangerous relationship!
- DirectorPeter YatesStarsWilliam HurtSigourney WeaverChristopher PlummerA janitor who claims he's seen a murder becomes romantically involved with the glamorous TV reporter covering the story. The movie's hero, underdog Daryll, seems kinda cute in a quirky way, but as soon as he opens his mouth he becomes an instant creep: He overwhelms Tony with compliments even though he only 'knows' her through television. As a consequence, he seems more like an obsessive fanboy than a mature admirer. Tony, in turn, can't decide if he is just a job for her or if she has developed deeper feelings for him. She even sleeps with Darryl to get information about the murder he allegedly witnessed but can't make up her mind until her former fiancé turns out to be a killer! Of course, creepy stalker Darryl is the better choice for her then ... Messy!
- DirectorRon ClementsJohn MuskerStarsJodi BensonSamuel E. She may just be a curious, stubborn mermaid teenager who tries to solve her problems by means of dubious methods, but as a moviegoer, you just have to admire her courage. And no matter what some reviewers say: It's not all about the prince - Ariel wanted to be a human from the very beginning, Eric just tips the scales. This is a story of emancipation, albeit with radical, risky measures.
- DirectorPier Paolo PasoliniStarsSilvana ManganoTerence StampMassimo GirottiA mysterious young man seduces each member of a bourgeois family. When he suddenly leaves, how will their lives change?Equally austere, straightforward and enigmatic, this curious work of art seems surprisingly tame for a Pasolini film. Still, mixing sex, religion and politics, the story of a beautiful man who seduces a whole family of four (and the housemaid) may be the strangest cinematic 'Ménage à six' ever.
- DirectorD.W. GriffithStarsLillian GishRobert HarronMae MarshThe story of a poor young woman separated by prejudice from her husband and baby is interwoven with tales of intolerance from throughout history.Other times, other manners: Less than one minute after 'the Boy' has seen 'the Girl' on the street, he boldly grasps and kisses her. Before that, 'the Girl' seems to be both terrified and thrilled by her meeting with the obtrusive stranger, so the audience can guess that in the end, she will fall in love with him. The two of them actually become a very lovely couple, but from a present-day perspective, 'the Boy' is simply molesting 'the Girl' because he was ignoring her indications that she wanted to get away from him. Love's struggle indeed!
- DirectorHelmut KäutnerStarsHans AlbersIlse WernerHans SöhnkerThe film tells the story of the blond "singing sailor" Hannes Kröger who works in a St. Pauli club on the Große Freiheit 7, and falls in love with a girl. But she prefers his rival Willem and Hannes returns to the sea.Again, other times, other manners: Because they are in love with the same woman, two men start beating each other up ... instead of just asking their loved one whom she prefers. Now really, guys, stop making your life miserable! (What's more, one of these men is also a stalker who constantly turns up at the woman's workplace or in front of her house despite her telling him not to. And guess what? In the end, he is the one she falls in love with ...)

Surprisingly, the two of them attain happiness together - despite a lack of mutual language skills. As always in the wonderful world of cinema, the universal language of love prevails over probability.
- DirectorErnst LubitschStarsFredric MarchGary CooperMiriam HopkinsA woman cannot decide between two men who love her, and the trio agree to try living together in a platonic friendly relationship. This movie is never judging its three main protagonists' actions or feelings, which is probably why it doesn't feel dated at all. The story of a love quadrangle turning into a love triangle before finally turning into a love quadrangle again: Gilda decides to marry a former suitor of hers because she can't come to terms with her two lovers - they are just sooo irresistible! Sooo irresistible actually, that she runs away with both of them shortly after her wedding ... A peculiarly 'modern' comedy, especially considering this was released in 1933!

But she doesn't know where he is, or so she says. Corpse after corpse, Bernard will find out the truth. But will the truth help him?Is this pop-cultural chaos of a film the most erratic, rushed and lurid erotic thriller ever? Yes.

After many car chases and intrigue, he manages to get away with "the secret plans".Many (old) spy movies tell some rather ... peculiar love stories. This is an especially odd one: Everywhere in this carefree little flick, you can find pure 60s spirit ... like Frankie entering a strangers bedroom just because he found her attractive, or Maud abandoning Frankie when he is in danger because she is jealous of his latest flame. And of course, on top of it, there are lots of politically incorrect 'jokes'.

Nothing illegal here! Still, since they were raised by the same mother and always acted like 'real' siblings even during adulthood, their sudden decision to marry (shortly after the girl's fiancé died, by the way!), comes across as rather ... indecent.
- DirectorClint EastwoodStarsClint EastwoodVerna BloomMarianna HillA gun-fighting stranger comes to the small settlement of Lago and is hired to bring the townsfolk together in an attempt to hold off three outlaws who are on their way.Although by the time the credits roll, we can guess the motivation of the mysterious rider's guesome actions, the film's depiction of rape is very disturbing... In short, rape is only considered terrible in this movie if it happened to an 'honest woman', whereas the 'bad girl' is constantly humiliated and ridiculed for even complaining about being raped by the stranger. Additionally, the victim later falls in love with her rapist, probably to further weaken her credibility, which is especially unsettling (though not uncommon for 70s movies, sadly).

After just one night together, she is willing to run away with Joker and leave her son behind. Although we can understand her a little bit better when she explains some of her motives, the character's depiction of personality still seems shallow and rushy.

The man uses his dangerous attitude to force his 'hostage' to help him. While on the run together, she falls for him nevertheless, and of course, the alleged criminal turns out to be innocent.
