What is truly needed for a screenplay to be great art? The greatest screenplays in history, simply put, have emotional and intellectual depth. They feature well-developed characters and psychologically plausible arcs. Their storytelling organically flows from the characters’ qualities and desires. Consequently they inspire us to think about particular subjects and situations in fuller, more insightful ways. This is what great art does, and below is my own list of 100 screenplays (along with some honorable mentions) that I think meet the aforementioned standards.
