Seinfeld - Season 1 (6.4/10)
Average episode rating = 6.4/10
Overall season rating = 6/10
Favourite episode: Male Unbonding - Now I'm not sure how uncommon an opinion this is but this episode, the only one whose title does not begin with 'the' is my favourite of the episodes. It feels like the episode that most accurately captures Seinfeld as the show about nothing. There's enough light humour in the dynamic between Jerry and his childhood friend.
Least favourite: Pilot - Doesn't really work. Watchable but awkward and a little deflated.
Seinfeld's first season isn't particularly great and it isn't any sort of accurate indicator of what this show is capable of. Mostly, I find it an awkward first step in the show and many of the actors as well as the writing duo of Seinfeld and David have not ignited any sort of real spark just yet.
There's no real fizz to the dialogue that gives the scenes life. Elaine is criminally underused and lacks anything particularly memorable. George, while amusing, is characterized at odds with who will go onto be where here he is a more fortuitous individual with prospects and a sufficient understanding of women. Kramer, while aloof and eccentric, has not yet integrated himself into the dynamic of the core group. And straight man Jerry is more or less who he is throughout the show.
I adore Seinfeld and the fact that this first season is weak in no way harms my enjoyment of the show. If anything, it probably enhances it as Seinfeld's gradual rise to a pop culture phenomenon is a worthy tale in and of itself.
