Awwa's Top 100 Science Fiction Movies
These are, in my opinion, the top 100 sci-fi films that I have seen. These are listed in year of release order. I intentionally left-out a lot of early movies to keep the list more accessible to modern audiences. I also left-out (with a few exceptions), most of the movies which easily fit into other genres; such as horror, monster movies, fantasy, super-heroes, spy movies, comedies, religiously themed movies, etc. And I minimized the "alien invasion" and "zombie apocalypse" movies sub-genres, as they could easily takeover the whole list. Perhaps I will make separate lists for those themes. Also I do not include many recent or currently released movies (2011-2012) as I haven't had the chance to see many of these yet. And lastly I left-out most of those which were alternate versions, remakes and, or those with multiple sequels, by picking only one out of the group as the "best of." Please feel free to bring-up movies which should be included, omitted, and, or corrected for any errors I may make creating this list. Thank you! And now without further fuss or apologies, Awwa's top 100 sci-fi movies!

100 titles
- DirectorGeorges MélièsStarsGeorges MélièsVictor AndréBleuette BernonA group of astronomers go on an expedition to the Moon. One of the first ever science fiction movies! Very camp and it's silent, but a lot of fun! Silent, b&w, 14 mins.
- DirectorFritz LangStarsBrigitte HelmAlfred AbelGustav FröhlichIn a futuristic city sharply divided between the working class and the city planners, the son of the city's mastermind falls in love with a working-class prophet who predicts the coming of a savior to mediate their differences. One of the first dystopian movies ever! Holds-up even today as an unusual vision of a possible future! Also silent! But hey, stop your whining! Play a Pink Floyd record or something! b&w, 153 mins.
- DirectorWilliam Cameron MenziesStarsRaymond MasseyEdward ChapmanRalph RichardsonThe story of a century: a decades-long second World War leaves plague and anarchy, then a rational state rebuilds civilization and attempts space travel. This one really goes out there! An interesting "what if" about a future which would have mostly occurred by now. But who knows, it may be a vision still yet to come! Originally black and white, but this one is a "talkie!" 100 mins.
- DirectorRobert WiseStarsMichael RenniePatricia NealHugh MarloweAn alien lands in Washington, D.C. and tells the people of Earth that they must live peacefully or be destroyed as a danger to other planets. The famously infamous and still (in my opinion) the best version! Gort can not be improved upon! b&w, 92 mins.
- DirectorChristian NybyHoward HawksStarsKenneth TobeyMargaret SheridanJames ArnessScientists and American Air Force officials fend off a bloodthirsty alien organism while at a remote arctic outpost. Also known as simply, "The Thing", and another original version is the best, in my opinion. Although, I admit that the 1982, John Carpenter /Kurt Russell remake is pretty awesome! But hey, this original version features James Arness as the Thing! b&w, 87 mins.
- DirectorWilliam Cameron MenziesStarsHelena CarterArthur FranzJimmy HuntA young boy learns that space aliens are taking over the minds of earthlings. This one gave me nightmares as a child! I mean, how can you tell if someone is a pod being, has been taken over by aliens? I remember first seeing it in black and white, but it may have been filmed in color. color(?), 78 mins.
- DirectorByron HaskinStarsGene BarryAnn RobinsonLes TremayneA small town in California is attacked by Martians, beginning a worldwide invasion.Another one which gave me nightmares! Ahhh, childhood in the sixties! This movie version of H G Wells' book was really noir, really spooky for those who are unfamiliar with it! The remake with Tom Cruise is quite good too. But again, for me the original version is the better one! The specs say it was filmed in color, although it worked quite well in black and white when I first saw it growing-up in the sixties! color(?), 85 mins.
- DirectorFred M. WilcoxStarsWalter PidgeonAnne FrancisLeslie NielsenA starship crew in the 23rd century goes to investigate the silence of a distant planet's colony, only to find just two survivors, a powerful robot, and the deadly secret of a lost civilization.Color at last, LOL! Okay, most of the rest of these have sound and are in color! Speaking of sound, this was one of the sci-fi movies to champion the use of the theremin in the soundtrack, that wavering, saucer sound! Spooky and forever identified as a spacey sound! But a lot of "firsts" were featured in this film, making it one of the all-time greatest sci-fi movies ever! Everything from the special effects to the movie's theme and plotlines are quite advanced for sci-fi movies of the era! And who can forget "Robby the Robot!" color, 98 mins.
- DirectorDon SiegelStarsKevin McCarthyDana WynterLarry GatesA small-town doctor learns that the population of his community is being replaced by emotionless alien duplicates. The original black and white classic! If "Invaders from Mars" didn't scare the wits out of you, this one did! And you got to bare witness to the only human who knows what's really going on! The remake is very good too. One of the few remakes which stays very close to the original! But I chose the original version again. It's what made the greatest impression on me! b&w, 80 mins.
- DirectorJack ArnoldStarsGrant WilliamsRandy StuartApril KentAfter Scott Carey begins to shrink because of exposure to a combination of radiation and insecticide, medical science is powerless to help him.Author Richard Matheson wrote the book and screenplay this film is based on. Quite a scarey concept in the age of atomics! We really didn't know what could happen to a person back then, who was exposed to radiation! b&w, 81 mins.
- DirectorEdward D. Wood Jr.StarsGregory WalcottTom KeeneMona McKinnonEvil aliens attack Earth and set their terrible "Plan 9" into action. As the aliens resurrect the dead of the Earth, the lives of the living are in danger.Ed Wood Junior's classically bad sci-fi movie! This is the one everyone loves to hate! Whether you're a fan of the science fiction genre or not, you may find this one to be funny. From the shere campiness, the bad staging, bad directing and horrible acting, this one deserves its dubious reputation! Often featured on "Worst Movie" lists, if you like to laugh at bad "b-movies", this one won't disappoint! b&w, 79 mins.
- DirectorRanald MacDougallStarsHarry BelafonteInger StevensMel FerrerA miner trapped in a cave-in resurfaces, and upon discovering mankind has been wiped out in a nuclear holocaust, sets out to find other survivors.Harry Belafonte, singer, actor brings to this film a wonderful performance answering the question, "What would you do if it was the end of the world?" One of the first post apocalyptic /dystopian films, this one is the classic! b&w, 95 mins.
- DirectorRoger CormanStarsJonathan HazeJackie JosephMel WellesA clumsy young man working at an impoverished flower shop discovers that the strange plant he has been nurturing has an insatiable appetite for blood, forcing him to kill to feed it.Definitely the best version! Please! I can stand a musical now and then, and I completely understand people falling in love with this, the original version so much, that they'd watch it over and over again at midnight showings of cult classics! But that in no way makes me want to watch a campy remake, which completely ignores the classy jazz soundtrack of this original version! And making the dentist (Steve Martin in the remake) a major character, is a big storyline change! Sorry, but not nearly so cool as watching a young Jack Nicholson having all of his teeth pulled-out for the pure masocistic joy of it! Sorry for the spoiler, but if you haven't seen this one, watch it for that scene alone! b&w, 72 mins.
- DirectorGeorge PalStarsRod TaylorAlan YoungYvette MimieuxA man's vision for a utopian society is disillusioned when travelling forward into time reveals a dark and dangerous society.Color? Really? Another one I grew-up with watching as a late night, "creature feature" on our black and white television set, LOL! Still, it doesn't lose a lot for the difference, holds up well either way. Another H G Wells' story, about a dystopian future. color(?), 103 mins.
- DirectorChris MarkerStarsÉtienne BeckerJean NégroniHélène ChatelainThe story of a man forced to explore his memories in the wake of World War III's devastation, told through still images.A strange, futuristic movie, "La Jetée" or "The Pier" features a man traveling back and forth through time, trying to solve the world's problems, all while being transfixed by the vision of a beautiful woman from his memory. The story is told through the use of photographic stills rather than live or animated action. A unique effect and a very interesting film! This one is available for free, here at IMDb, through Hulu! French made, but in English, b&w, 28 mins.
- 19641h 35mPG8.4 (519K)97MetascoreDirectorStanley KubrickStarsPeter SellersGeorge C. ScottSterling HaydenAn unhinged American general orders a bombing attack on the Soviet Union, triggering a path to nuclear holocaust that a war room full of politicians and generals frantically tries to stop.Classic, dark, end of the world comedy from the great director himself, Stanley Kubrick! Features lots of stars, a great storyline, and lots of great gags through-out! b&w, 95 mins.
- DirectorSidney LumetStarsHenry FondaWalter MatthauFritz WeaverA technical malfunction sends American planes to Moscow to deliver a nuclear attack. Can all-out war be averted? What happens when your contingency plans don't work? Apocalyptic and dark! American planes are sent to deliver a nuclear attack on Moscow, but it's a mistake due to an electrical malfunction. Can all-out war be averted? This one is a serious take on a similar situation as "Dr. Strangelove" suggests might happen. Another great one for "end of the world" movie fans. b&w, 112 mins.
- DirectorUbaldo RagonaSidney SalkowStarsVincent PriceFranca BettoiaEmma DanieliWhen a disease turns all of humanity into the living dead, the last man on earth becomes a reluctant vampire hunter.Vincent Price is the last man on earth... need I say more? A great post-apocalyptic story, "What would you do at the end of the world?" Similar to other movies in the genre, but one of the first ones with this particular theme! b&w, 86 mins.
- DirectorByron HaskinStarsPaul ManteeVictor LundinAdam WestStranded on Mars with only a monkey as a companion, an astronaut must figure out how to find oxygen, water, and food on the lifeless planet.Stranded on an alien world, this astronaut has many problems to overcome, and many wonders to explore. Based loosely on the original "Robinson Caruso" storyline, but set on Mars. A very well made movie, for its time, and one of the first of the better sixties' sci-fi movies. color, 110 mins.
- DirectorJean-Luc GodardStarsEddie ConstantineAnna KarinaAkim TamiroffA U.S. secret agent is sent to the distant space city of Alphaville where he must find a missing person and free the city from its tyrannical ruler.A strange, dystopian world, and a noir detective sent to solve a mystery. Some things just don't change. The master of new wave French cinema, Jean-Luc Godard creates a wonderfully dark story! b&w, 99 mins.
- DirectorFrançois TruffautStarsOskar WernerJulie ChristieCyril CusackIn an oppressive future, a fireman whose duty is to destroy all books begins to question his task.Ray Bradbury's story of a future society, that controls people's minds, by outlawing books. Stylistically interesting with great social commentary! This one is by the wonderful French director François Truffaut. English, color, 112 mins.
- DirectorJohn FrankenheimerStarsRock HudsonFrank CampanellaJohn RandolphAn unhappy middle-aged banker agrees to a procedure that will fake his death and give him a completely new look and identity - one that comes with its own price.Rock Hudson gives a wonderful performance in this dark look at how even our wildest fantasies can go terribly wrong! Kind of a small, little known film. But worth the watch when you get the chance! b&w, 106 mins.
- DirectorRichard FleischerStarsStephen BoydRaquel WelchEdmond O'BrienWhen a blood clot renders a scientist comatose, a submarine and its crew are shrunk and injected into his bloodstream in order to save him.Novelized by Isaac Asimov, starring Raquel Welch, count me in! One of the first "Honey I shrunk the... " movies, this one works the theme well! color, 100 mins.
- DirectorRoger VadimStarsJane FondaJohn Phillip LawAnita PallenbergIn the 41st century, an astronaut partakes in sexy misadventures while seeking to stop an evil scientist who threatens to bring evil back into the galaxy.Directed by Roger Vadim and starring Jane Fonda, this is the sexy, spacey, comedy cult classic! The band Duran Duran is said to have taken their name from a character in this movie. It's really that good! Well, sort of! It's definitely campy, sexy fun! color, 98 mins.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsKeir DulleaGary LockwoodWilliam SylvesterAfter uncovering a mysterious artifact buried beneath the Lunar surface, a spacecraft is sent to Jupiter to find its origins: a spacecraft manned by two men and the supercomputer HAL 9000.The Stanley Kubrick classic, perhaps the most influential science fiction movie of all-time! From the scenes of proto-humans, to the near present day future, to the final scenes of transcendence, this is one amazing film! Ground breaking soundtrack, special effects and story-telling makes this movie a top ten contender for most science fiction fans. Co-written with Arthur C Clarke, Kubrick suggests more than is tangibly evident. You have to use your brain for this one folks! (And if need be, read the book)! color, 141 mins.
- DirectorFranklin J. SchaffnerStarsCharlton HestonRoddy McDowallKim HunterAn astronaut crew crash-lands on a planet where highly intelligent non-human ape species are dominant and humans are enslaved. Can you say "Dystopia?" Okay I am a big fan of the sub-genre as this list shows! "Planet of the Apes" is based on the 1962 novel written by Pierre Boulle. The social commentary (which is thick here), doesn't keep you from enjoying the wild romp in a far gone world! Try not to give away the final scenes! There are those who would probably enjoy that revelation without the spoiler! color, 112 mins.
- DirectorJoseph SargentStarsEric BraedenSusan ClarkGordon PinsentThinking this will prevent war, the US government gives an impenetrable supercomputer total control over launching nuclear missiles. But what the computer does with the power is unimaginable to its creators. We're on a roll, another doomsday film. This time with a "What happens to the world, when we rely too heavily on computers?" theme. Not exactly like some of these others, but one of the first to suggest this particular angle. color, 100 mins.
- DirectorRichard LesterStarsRita TushinghamRalph RichardsonPeter CookIn post-nuclear-holocaust England, a handful of bizarre characters struggles on with their lives in the ruins, among endless heaps of ash, piles of broken crockery and brick, muddy plains, and heaps of dentures and old boots. Patriotically singing "God Save Mrs. Ethel Shroake, Long Live Mrs. Ethel Shroake", they wander through this surrealistic landscape, forever being warned by the police to "keep moving", and prone to the occasional mutation into a parrot, cupboard, or even--yes, a bed-sitting room with "No Wogs" scrawled in the grime on its windows. In particular, this story revolves around the odd "love story" of a girl who lives with her parents in one compartment of a London Underground train, the commuter in the next compartment, and the doctor they meet after returning above ground in search of a nurse for the heavily-pregnant girl.A high farce in the British style, by director Richard Lester! This one is just for fun! color, 90 mins.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsMalcolm McDowellPatrick MageeMichael BatesIn the future, a sadistic gang leader is imprisoned and volunteers for a conduct-aversion experiment, but it doesn't go as planned.Based on the book by Anthony Burgess, this time Stanley Kubrick focuses on a future society, and the problems of crime and urban decay. Again a marvelous soundtrack (partially provided by Wendy Carlos, orchestrated on an early modular Moog synthesizer), with gorgeously captured cinematography! The film was considered so controversial after an initial release in 1971, actually blamed for starting riots, that Kubrick withdrew the film until its re-release in 2000. color, 136 mins.
- DirectorGeorge LucasStarsRobert DuvallDonald PleasenceDon Pedro ColleyIn the 25th century, a time when people have designations instead of names, a man, THX 1138, and a woman, LUH 3417, rebel against their rigidly controlled society. What was George Lucas doing before he created "Star Wars?" "THX-1138", originally made as a film school project, Lucas was given funding for a fully fleshed-out version, as seen here. A future society of people, pushed and moved around, with little human emotional interaction, feelings are discouraged, wow, the future is really going to be a bad place if this one holds true, LOL! Be aware, some versions of this film contain partial nudity! But it is tastefully done and pretains directly to the storyline in the film. color, 86 mins.
- DirectorBoris SagalStarsCharlton HestonAnthony ZerbeRosalind CashDr Robert Neville has developed an experimental vaccine which makes him the only immune survivor of a biological catastrophe. A gang of homicidal mutants blame science for their condition and attempt to kill him. This is basically a remake of "The Last Man on Earth." But it is done with a lot of style, is in color, and overall holds up pretty well considering when it was created. It's another post-apocalyptic film, but I offer no apologies, as it is a story well told. color, 98 mins.
- DirectorDouglas TrumbullStarsBruce DernCliff PottsRon RifkinIn a future where all flora is extinct on Earth, an astronaut is given orders to destroy the last of Earth's botany, kept in a greenhouse aboard a spacecraft.Bruce Dern in one of his dernedest best roles! A future where things get so crowded on earth that they preserve what little they can of the last trees and wilderness on platforms sent into outer space. Dern's character, one of the last of the tree-huggers, goes wild when the preservation project is cancelled! Another one with great theme music! color, 89 mins.
- DirectorGeorge Roy HillStarsMichael SacksRon LeibmanEugene RocheBilly Pilgrim has mysteriously become unstuck in time. He goes on an uncontrollable trip back and forth from his birth in New York to life on a distant planet and back again to the horrors of the 1945 fire-bombing of Dresden.Based on the Kurt Vonnegut Jr's novel of the same name, this one is a top ten contender! What happens to a person who becomes unstuck in time? The central character, Billy Pilgram, bounces back and forth through-out his life, somehow managing to not go crazy as he is at one point a child at a pool with his father, to then find himself in the middle of in WWII, at another point finds he has survived the war and become a successful writer, to find himself later on a far distant world having been abducted by aliens, and then back again to WWII! A dark farce in Vonnegut's best comedic style, and a very well made movie adaption of that book! color, 104 mins.
- DirectorRichard FleischerStarsCharlton HestonEdward G. RobinsonLeigh Taylor-YoungA nightmarish futuristic fantasy about the controlling power of big corporations and an innocent cop who stumbles on the truth.Over-crowding and a food shortage? This one told the tale first that draws the obvious conclusions! Stars Edward G Robinson in one of his last roles! color, 97 mins.
- DirectorWoody AllenStarsWoody AllenDiane KeatonJohn BeckA nerdish store owner is revived out of cryostasis into a future world to fight an oppressive government.A Woody Allen comedy featuring him in the star role, as a person who wakes-up to a strange future world and a conspiracy he must help stop! A lot of fun in Woody's slapstick way! Also stars Diane Keaton. color, 89 mins.
- DirectorMichael CrichtonStarsYul BrynnerRichard BenjaminJames BrolinA robot malfunction creates havoc and terror for unsuspecting vacationers at a futuristic, adult-themed amusement park.Yul Brynner in a western, but set in the future, with robots??? Oh yea, the original! Written and directed by Michael Crichton, a great take on the "What if things go wrong" theme! Also stars James Brolin and Richard Benjamin in great performances! color, 88 mins.
- DirectorJohn BoormanStarsSean ConneryCharlotte RamplingSara KestelmanIn the late 23rd century, a savage trained only to kill finds a way into the community of bored immortals that alone preserves humanity's achievements.Sean Connery stars in this one, as a savior to a future society that has grown stagnent and overly-complacent. Where the few people who are really free, run wild and are rounded-up like cattle. Connery, one of the "people wranglers" decides to find-out why the world is like it is, and brings about the change everyone has been waiting for! Also stars Charlotte Rampling and has some brief nudity. Be aware. color, 105 mins.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsDan O'BannonDre PahichBrian NarelleIn the far reaches of space, a small crew, 20 years into their solitary mission, find things beginning to go hilariously wrong.Oh the classic student film made into a regular feature presentation! John Carpenter and Dan O'Bannon created the film on an estimated $60,000 budget, making most of the props themselves (they actually used ice cube trays as some of the buttons on the ship's console)! And it features an alien creature partly molded from a beachball! You can tell! But that doesn't stop this film from being the cult classic it is, and enjoyed by fans everywhere! color, 83 mins.
- DirectorNorman JewisonStarsJames CaanJohn HousemanMaud AdamsIn a corporate-controlled future, an ultra-violent sport known as Rollerball represents the world, and one of its powerful athletes is out to defy those who want him out of the game."Jonathan! Jonathan! Jonathan!" James Caan in a rare sci-fi role as a sports superstar, who becomes a hero to the people in more than one way! Who will save this society of sheep, blindly following the corporations which rule the world? Jonathan! color, 125 mins.
- DirectorL.Q. JonesStarsDon JohnsonJason RobardsSusanne BentonA young man and his telepathic dog wander a post-apocalyptic wasteland.A Harlan Ellison story about a post-apocalyptic land, where food and sex are rare commodities, and a reluctant anti-hero (Don Johnson) and his telepathic dog scour the land for some relief! Pass the popcorn! This film is said to have been one of the inspirations for the "Mad Max" movies series! color, 91 mins.
- DirectorMichael AndersonStarsMichael YorkJenny AgutterRichard JordanA police officer in the future uncovers the deadly secret behind a society that worships youth.Michael York and Jenny Agutter star in this dystopian future where, an idyllic society has one major drawback; life must end at 30. Hey, what? You wanna live forever? color, 119 mins.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsRichard DreyfussFrançois TruffautTeri GarrRoy Neary, an Indiana electric lineman, finds his quiet and ordinary daily life turned upside down after a close encounter with a UFO, spurring him to an obsessed cross-country quest for answers as a momentous event approaches.Steven Spielberg's story about the first meeting of modern humans and extraterrestrials. Starring; Richard Dreyfuss, François Truffaut and Teri Garr, this is what could happen if the aliens we meet are actually nice guys! And hey, who wouldn't want to take a ride in a flying saucer? color, 132 mins.
- DirectorJack SmightStarsJan-Michael VincentGeorge PeppardDominique SandaIn a post-apocalyptic world, a group of survivors travel and find other settlements in huge custom designed all terrain vehicles.Based on a story written by Roger Zelazny; George Peppard, Jan-Michael Vincent and Dominique Sanda, drive across the post apocalyptic southwestern United States, fighting off giant scorpions and wild dust devils, to reunite with what's left of the United States back east! It is an exciting whirlwind of a ride! Worth watching the movie just to see the crazy ATV they use to make the crossing! color, 91 mins.
- DirectorGeorge LucasStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherLuke Skywalker joins forces with a Jedi Knight, a cocky pilot, a Wookiee and two droids to save the galaxy from the Empire's world-destroying battle station, while also attempting to rescue Princess Leia from the mysterious Darth Vader. This won't no "Episode IV - A New Hope" back in the day! This was/is just plain "Star Wars!" And that's enough! I still prefer this, the original "episode!" Can't say much more than that, that hasn't already been said! color, 121 mins.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsSigourney WeaverTom SkerrittJohn HurtThe crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform after investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin.Another one of these multiple sequels and now coming soon, a prequel! Okay, I still like the original one! The slow pace, the creepiness, the great Giger artwork which inspired the whole alien design, the first time you see the baby alien pop out of John Hurt's chest! Hurt? I bet it did! This is the one folks! Sure, the other sequels have some good storylines, some good action, etc. But this is the one that started all that! color, 117 mins.
- DirectorRobert WiseStarsWilliam ShatnerLeonard NimoyDeForest KelleyWhen an alien spacecraft of enormous power is spotted approaching Earth, Admiral James T. Kirk resumes command of the overhauled USS Enterprise in order to intercept it.Captain Kirk back in the saddle again! Woo-Hoo! This was the best thing since sliced bread back in the day! Once we lost the television show, there really was not much else on that compared. Then they decided to start making the movies, yeah! This storyline was the one that seems to be more elegant to me. It has some deep concepts, not just a shoot 'em up space opera! color, 132 mins.
- DirectorKen RussellStarsWilliam HurtBlair BrownBob BalabanA psycho-physiologist experiments with drugs and a sensory-deprivation tank and has visions he believes are genetic memories.Ken Russell's film addressing the experiments with psycho-active drugs and sensory depravation chambers, similar to real such experiments carried out by John Lilly and others during the late sixties, early seventies. Very creative, surreal animations, interwoven stories surrounding a glowing green rock! What good or evil can come from this? Some characters are protrayed in various states of undress, parental guidance advised, LOL! color, 86 mins.
- DirectorGeorge MillerStarsMel GibsonBruce SpenceMichael PrestonIn the post-apocalyptic Australian wasteland, a cynical drifter agrees to help a small, gasoline-rich community to get rid of a horde of bandits.Okay, I know, they just want to be sure that you get the branding that's going on. But I already know this is a part of the "Mad Max" triumverant! This one was/is plain old "Road Warrior" and that's good enough for me! Mel Gibson's second round as the lovable character, Mad Max, out for revenge against a cold and uncaring post-apocalyptic world! And unlike many of my other choices, this time I went with the second film of the series, as it has a lot more going on than the first one, and is at least good enough as compared to "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome!" This is the one that rocked for me! color, 95 mins.
- DirectorTerry GilliamStarsSean ConneryShelley DuvallJohn CleeseA young boy accidentally joins a band of time travelling dwarves, as they jump from era to era looking for treasure to steal.Monty Python's Terry Gilliam directed film, about a young boy and a bunch of thieving dwarves bouncing through time, looking for treasure! Based on the Philip K Dick book, "Do Androids Deam of Electric Sheep!" "Blade Runner" is at the top of many top ten lists (mine included)! I just love this film, I've seen it over a dozen times! The soundtrack, the mood it oozes and drips, the immersive reality, you really feel like you are there, a seamless vision of a ruptured future! And featuring an all star cast; Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Joanna Cassidy, Daryl Hannah, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos, and on and on! color, 117 mins.
- DirectorLuc BessonStarsPierre JolivetJean BouiseJean RenoIn a post-apocalyptic future where no one is able to speak, the few remaining humans fight over resources in order to survive. The English title I have seen for this on VHS is "The Final Combat." So by whatever title you can find this rare gem, please seek it out! If "Mad Max" type, post-apocalyptic movies interest you at all, you will find this an amazing movie! I am not sure if it is even available yet, on DVD. But I did find an affordable copy on VHS on Amazon, so it is out there. This is the French film directed and starred in by Luc Besson, about a world where drinking water is a scarce resource. A world where a few men gather together to eek out a minimal living, until the one survivor reinvents the airplane to fly away to some place better. Only to find he hasn't improved his lot by much. A classic for those who know of this film! A unique idea in this film is that there is almost (read as only a couple of words) no dialogue! Everything else is expressed in gestures and grunts. b&w, 92 mins.
- DirectorDavid LynchStarsKyle MacLachlanVirginia MadsenFrancesca AnnisA Duke's son leads desert warriors against the galactic emperor and his father's evil nemesis to free their desert world from the emperor's rule."Dune", the David Lynch version, is the best yet, condensed version of the epic book by Frank Herbert. Necessarily condensed because the book is so huge and covers such a vast amount of material, making it almost impossible to properly adapt to film! But don't go away misunderstanding what is attempted here! First, read the book (or go back and read the book). Then watch the movie with the knowledge that at best it is similar to watching someone's vacation slides of their holiday! No way to depict everything in 2-3 hours! But Lynch does an adequate job here. This version gives the grand scale of the book a better treatment than other versions to date (IMHO, by 2012). And ya got to love Kyle McLaughlin! color, 137 mins.
- DirectorMichael RadfordStarsJohn HurtRichard BurtonSuzanna HamiltonIn a totalitarian future society, a man, whose daily work is re-writing history, tries to rebel by falling in love.George Orwell's book, released in the year of portend! Is it true? Has Orwell's predictions come true? I have to say that there are many aspects frighteningly similar, and enough to keep free people concerned about their freedoms! Don't fool yourself, Big Brother IS watching! I like this version best as it is stylistically and technically easier to watch and appreciate. And still it is a disturbing film! color, 113 mins.
- DirectorAlex CoxStarsHarry Dean StantonEmilio EstevezTracey WalterA young punk, recruited by a car repo agency, finds himself in pursuit of a Chevrolet Malibu with a huge, $20,000 bounty--and something otherworldly stashed in its trunk.Emilio Estevez finds a new career as a repo-man, with the help of Harry Dean Stanton. As Otto's (Estevez) disfunctional family and life in general fall apart all around him; finds he can't trust his girlfriend, so he better trust his co-workers! Fun, irreverent, hilarious! color, 92 mins.
- DirectorTerry GilliamStarsJonathan PryceKim GreistRobert De NiroA bureaucrat in a dystopic society becomes an enemy of the state as he pursues the woman of his dreams.Another great Terry Gilliam film, this time about a steam-punk-like future, tied-up in bureaucratic tape and paperwork, where a government worker attempts to fix the system, so that he can finally be with his new found love! Stars Jonathan Pryce, Kim Greist and Robert De Niro, in one of his only sci-fi adventures! color, 132 mins.
- DirectorGeorge MillerGeorge OgilvieStarsMel GibsonTina TurnerBruce SpenceAfter being exiled from the most advanced town in post apocalyptic Australia, a drifter travels with a group of abandoned children to rebel against the town's queen.A couple of the few movies I list two of a series, but I believe they is worth it! The first of the series (the original "Mad Max") being the less than stellar exception, these second two are quite good ("Road Warrior" and "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome")! - DirectorWolfgang PetersenStarsDennis QuaidLouis Gossett Jr.Brion JamesDuring a long space war, the lives of two wounded enemies become dependent on their ability to forgive and to trust.A wonderful adaption of Barry Longyear's book! In the middle of galactic war, two soldiers of competing factions crash land and are stranded on a world, where they find they have to work together to survive. A lot to be learned from this well made movie! Co-starring Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr, both deliver stellar performances! color, 108 mins.
- DirectorTobe HooperStarsSteve RailsbackMathilda MayPeter FirthA race of space vampires arrives in London and infects the populace, beginning an apocalyptic descent into chaos.Vampires from outer space! Okay, not a new theme, but in this well made British version there is a lot of eye-candy! After a failed mission returns from space, several specimens break free and go on a "lifeforce sucking" rampage! Starring; Steve Railsback, Mathilda May and Peter Firth, "Lifeforce" has full frontal nudity! I make no apologies for loving this movie! color, 116 mins.
- DirectorPaul DonovanDigby CookTony RandelStarsLenore ZannMaury ChaykinKate LynchTwo men and a woman circle the globe in a satellite armed with a nuclear device. The third world war breaks out, and a few months later the satellite crashes. They survive the crash but one man gets killed by survivors and the other man gets caught. The woman stays by the remains of the the satellite but is soon caught by evil punks who have taken power. What do you do, if while in orbit around the planet, WWIII breaks out, leaving you as astronauts no where to go back to, but a post apocalyptic world of competing tribes? Watch the movie to find out! A great take on the post apocalyptic theme, though not very well known inspite of its excellent performances and visual depictions! color, 88 mins.
- DirectorGeoff MurphyStarsBruno LawrenceAlison RoutledgePete SmithA scientist awakens to find himself alone in the world. In a desperate attempt to search for others, he finds only two who have their own agenda.Sort of a remake of "The World, the Flesh and the Devil" idea, of there being only two men and one woman to survive an apocalyptic catastropie! How do they work-out this triangle and live with each other, in a world where everyone else is dead? Very beautiful cinematography! color, 91 mins.
- DirectorJohn McTiernanStarsArnold SchwarzeneggerCarl WeathersKevin Peter HallA team of commandos on a mission in a Central American jungle find themselves hunted by an extraterrestrial warrior. The original one is the best (IMHO) again this time! Ahnold delivers a passible performance, but he doesn't have to do much but act tough! And well, the Predator is the Predator! The first of its series, sits well as the basis for the sequels and the "Alien verses Predator" spin-offs! A great action flick of the sci-fi monster sub-genre! color, 107 mins.
- DirectorLee H. KatzinStarsBruce DernMichael ParéCatherine Mary StewartIn the nuclear ravaged wasteland of Earth 2087 water is as precious as life itself. The isolated Lost Wells outpost survived the holocaust and the inhabitants guard the source of their existence. Now an evil cult of renegades want control of their valuable water supply. And the villagers are no match for such brute military force. Only one man can help the stricken community - a mercenary living in a distant cannibal city. But even he, and his strange henchmen, may not be able to survive in the world gone wild.Stars; Bruce Dern, Michael Paré, Catherine Mary Stewart and Adam Ant in a post-apocalyptic world where water has become a scarce resource and valuable commodity! Hhmmm, I'm starting to see a recurring theme here! Bruce Dern is quite good in this, as well as is Adam Ant (yes, the rock star)! Another small film, if you like the "Mad Max" post apocalyptic theme recurring here, this is another one to add to your "must watch" list! color, 95 mins.

Hard to improve on that blurb, except to say that it is a well made movie, with a fair amount of comic relief built-in! Lots of fun, this one! color, 90 mins.
- DirectorDavid Webb PeoplesStarsRutger HauerJoan ChenDelroy LindoIn a future where most of mankind and technology is wiped out, six people travel from place to place playing a brutal form of football with a dog skull. They hope one day to play in the league in a city."Mad Max" with Rutger Hauer? A future where to survive a group of toughs fight in sporting events. Sort of like having a Thunderdome match everyday! color, 90 mins.
- DirectorShin'ya TsukamotoStarsTomorô TaguchiKei FujiwaraNobu KanaokaA businessman accidentally kills The Metal Fetishist, who gets his revenge by slowly turning the man into a grotesque hybrid of flesh and rusty metal.A very strange, little known film, of the new Japanese horror/ sci-fi genre! Still, amazing in concept and cinematic impact! A man becomes obcessed with turning himself into an "Iron Man!" (And NOT the supehero)! You've got to see it to know what I'm talking about! Graphic in violence and sexual content! Be aware! b&w, 67 mins.
- DirectorMarc CaroJean-Pierre JeunetStarsMarie-Laure DougnacDominique PinonPascal BenezechPost-apocalyptic surrealist black comedy about the landlord of an apartment building who occasionally prepares a delicacy for his odd tenants.Crazy post apocalyptic world with people who stay at a strange apartment building, where some of the tennents are invited to dinner, while others are served as dinner! Very weird and dark, but funny comedy! color, 99 mins.
- CreatorBruce WagnerStarsJim BelushiDana DelanyRobert LoggiaA multi-national corporation attempts to take over America while small pockets of resistance hold out against rampant technology. This is the only television mini-series in my list. But so well made as such, it is quite good and an amazing event! Lots of great stars (James Belushi, Robert Loggia, Dana Delaney, Kim Cattrail, etc) and based on a cybernetic future ala William Gibson, what does one do when they are caught-up in a world of illusions, murder and intrigue? Some predictions are nearly coming true today, though this was made only a few (approximately 10 years) ago. Probably the best thing you will ever see Jim Belushi in; and in this, he really delivers! color, 300 mins.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsSam NeillLaura DernJeff GoldblumA pragmatic paleontologist touring an almost complete theme park on an island in Central America is tasked with protecting a couple of kids after a power failure causes the park's cloned dinosaurs to run loose.Steven Spielberg directed, based on the Michael Crichton book, the infamous "dinosaurs gone wild" movie! What happens when a geneticist figures out a way to clone dinosaurs back to life? Can man contain the chaotic nature of nature? color, 127 mins.
- DirectorRoland EmmerichStarsKurt RussellJames SpaderJaye DavidsonAn interstellar teleportation device, found in Egypt, leads to a planet with humans resembling ancient Egyptians who worship the god Ra.The movie that started it all and one of the best "worm-hole" themed movies! I am a big fan of the movie, the series not so much. In this original movie there is a whole different plotline, rarely touched on (if ever) in the series. Okay, they moved-on. But that still makes this my preferred experience between the two! For me at least, the movie is far better than the TV series! color, 121 mins.
- DirectorTerry GilliamStarsBruce WillisMadeleine StoweBrad PittIn a future world devastated by disease, a convict is sent back in time to gather information about the man-made virus that wiped out most of the human population on the planet.Terry Gilliam in yet another wonderful movie! He really has a knack for creating believable worlds, where-in you are immersed in their reality! Here the idea of time travel and what paradoxes may occur are touched on. Bruce Willis delivers a great performance! color, 129 mins.
- DirectorRachel TalalayStarsLori PettyIce-TNaomi WattsA girl is among the few survivors of a dystopian Earth. Riding a war tank, she fights against the tyranny of a mega-corporation that dominates the remaining potable water supply of the planet.Based on the comicbook series, this movie depicts another post apocalyptic world, this time with a woman in charge, Huzzah! A lot of fun, if riding that same, "end of the world, water is scarce" wave! color, 104 mins.
- DirectorKevin ReynoldsStarsKevin CostnerJeanne TripplehornDennis HopperIn a future where the polar ice-caps have melted and Earth is almost entirely submerged, a mutated mariner fights starvation and outlaw "smokers," and reluctantly helps a woman and a young girl try to find dry land.Kevin Costner's tour de force, creating his version of "Mad Max" on water! Really a great, if similarly themed movie! Okay, it's one of my favorite sub-genres! Quilty as charged! I believe Mr Costner lost a bunch of money on this one! Must be great having that kind of money to lose! color, 135 mins.
- DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsJodie FosterMatthew McConaugheyTom SkerrittDr. Ellie Arroway, after years of searching, finds conclusive radio proof of extraterrestrial intelligence, sending plans for a mysterious machine.Based on the Carl Sagan story, Jodie Foster shines as the woman scientist who helps establish earth's first extraterrestrial contact. - DirectorLuc BessonStarsBruce WillisMilla JovovichGary OldmanIn the colorful future, a cab driver unwittingly becomes the central figure in the search for a legendary cosmic weapon to keep Evil and Mr. Zorg at bay.Another fine performance by Bruce Willis! Another of the slick, well produed worlds of immersive future reality, Willis' character must find a fugitive, so that a criminal can put into place his plan for world domination. But wait, Bruce doesn't fold-up that easy! color, 126 mins.
- DirectorKevin CostnerStarsKevin CostnerWill PattonLarenz TateA nameless drifter dons a postman's uniform and bag of mail as he begins a quest to inspire hope to the survivors living in post-apocalyptic America.Another Kevin Costner end of the world senario. This time with a twist on how we rebuild society. Interesting concept, and a fun action adventure romp with a sort of "Mad Max" set of competing tribes trying to survive! color, 177 mins.
- DirectorLana WachowskiLilly WachowskiStarsKeanu ReevesLaurence FishburneCarrie-Anne MossWhen a beautiful stranger leads computer hacker Neo to a forbidding underworld, he discovers the shocking truth--the life he knows is the elaborate deception of an evil cyber-intelligence.For being a film which questions reality down to the core, this one is important to any list of sci-fi films. Yet it is contrived and heavy-handed to fault. Does it try too hard to be cool? Can't figure out exactly what it is that turns me off from this movie, but I kind of don't like this one. Although for the influence it has had, I acknowledge it has a place on this list. color, 136 mins.
- DirectorDavid CronenbergStarsJude LawJennifer Jason LeighIan HolmA game designer on the run from assassins must play her latest virtual reality creation with a marketing trainee to determine if the game has been damaged.See, questioning reality can be a whole lot more fun! - DirectorJosef RusnakStarsCraig BierkoGretchen MolArmin Mueller-StahlA computer scientist running a virtual reality simulation of 1937 becomes the primary suspect when his colleague and mentor is murdered.Another great one for questioning reality. "Are we all just a program in a computer simulator somewhere?" "Can anyone really know the nature of reality?" And a lot more fun than "The Matrix" (imho)! And I believe that this one available to watch free, right here on IMDb, through the services of Crackle! Check it out! color, 100 mins.
- DirectorDean ParisotStarsTim AllenSigourney WeaverAlan RickmanThe alumni cast of a space opera television series have to play their roles as the real thing when an alien race needs their help. However, they also have to defend both Earth and the alien race from a reptilian warlord. How do you get away with picking on the nerds who love the sci-fi genre, while at the same time rewarding them! Tim Allen, Sigorney Weaver, Alan Rickman and others, deliver the goods on this one! It is actually pretty darned funny! This is one of the few outright comedies I feel compelled to include in this otherwise mostly serious list! color, 102 mins.
- DirectorKinji FukasakuStarsTatsuya FujiwaraAki MaedaTarô YamamotoIn the future, the Japanese government captures a class of ninth-grade students and forces them to kill one another under the revolutionary "Battle Royale" act. This is the original, "Send a bunch of kids into the wilderness to see who survives, challenge" movie! Again Japan has a new horror style reflected in the gore in this movie. But it ends up being just extreme enough to borderline being funny. I'm not sure that that's a good thing, but there you have it! The premise originates here, not at another more recent American made film! And pretty well made considering the relatively low budget! For these reasons and because it really is well known among Japanese movie enthusiasts, this one is a cult classic! color, 114 mins.
- DirectorRoger ChristianStarsJohn TravoltaForest WhitakerBarry PepperIt's the year 3000 A.D., and the Earth is lost to the alien race of Psychlos. Humanity is enslaved by these gold-thirsty tyrants, who are unaware that their 'man-animals' are about to ignite the rebellion of a lifetime.L Ron Hubbard was not just another sci-fi writer, he invented a whole new religion! This movie is taken from some of those sci-fi story writings, and stars one of the actors who follows L Ron Hubbard's new religion, Scientology! Now I admit that the movie has weak points, but it is another end of the world story, man against the invaders, is well enough done, and for the reasons already cited deserves to be on this list! I mean John Travolta is no Tom Cruise! But hey, Tom Cruise is no John Travolta! Now figure out which one is this filim! Ahhh sit back and just enjoy the fireworks, it's fun! color, 118 mins.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsHaley Joel OsmentJude LawFrances O'ConnorA highly advanced robotic boy longs to become "real" so that he can regain the love of his human mother. This one is almost more a fable, than it is science fiction. But it has sci-fi elements and settings, so, there ya go! It is again one of those which questions, "What is really important?", "What is real?", "At what point is a being considered sentient or human?", etc. It's a Steven Spielberg film and is good fun for the whole family! color, 146 mins.
- DirectorStuart GordonStarsEzra GoddenFrancisco RabalRaquel MeroñoA boating accident runs a young man and woman ashore in a decrepit Spanish fishing town which they discover is in the grips of an ancient sea god and its monstrous half human offspring. This film is based on an H P Lovecraft's story. For that reason alone it deserves to be on lists! But this one is well made, has a lot of creepiness and suspence built into it, before it drops you right into the horror! It could go either way, one of those cross genre films between horror and the sci-fi. But like "Alien", I include it here. There is nudity and violence, not for suitable for young children! color, 95 mins.
- DirectorVincenzo NataliStarsJeremy NorthamLucy LiuNigel BennettAn unsuspecting, disenchanted man finds himself working as a spy in the dangerous, high-stakes world of corporate espionage. Quickly getting way over-his-head, he teams up with a mysterious femme fatale.Another film which questions reality. Sometimes movies seem to come in waves around a given theme. In any case, this one does so very well, stylistically is intersting and yet is relatively reserved and small. It is a movie which is difficult to follow, until things really begin to unravel! But well made, worth seeing (imho)! color, 95 mins.
- DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsGeorge ClooneyNatascha McElhoneUlrich TukurA troubled psychologist is sent to investigate the crew of an isolated research station orbiting a bizarre planet. This is the George Clooney (starring) version, many years after the original nearly 3 hour Russian version. Based on Stanislaw Lem's book, Solaris is a whole planet. One which the Clooney character is sent to explore, only to find-out that the alien is Solaris, Solaris is the alien! Very strange concept from the Russian author Lem, this the Americanized version directed by Steven Soderbergh. It is well made, and more accessible to American audiences. But probably the original Russian version directed by Andrey Tarkovskiy, is worth seeing, for those truly die-hard sci-fi fans! color, 99 mins.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsTom CruiseColin FarrellSamantha MortonJohn works with the PreCrime police which stop crimes before they take place, with the help of three 'PreCogs' who can foresee crimes. Events ensue when John finds himself framed for a future murder.Another movie based on a Philip K Dick story, this one does star Tom Cruise! And is another one which questions reality, something Philip K Dick does very well! In a future where telepaths are hired to predict crimes, so that cops can prevent them by arresting the criminals before the crime is committed, where the potential for manipulating the system goes unchecked; then who really is the bad guy? color, 145 mins.
- DirectorDavid TwohyStarsVin DieselJudi DenchColm FeoreThe wanted criminal Richard Bruno Riddick arrives on a planet called Helion Prime and finds himself up against an invading empire called the Necromongers, an army that plans to convert or kill all humans in the universe.Better than the prequel (imho), this one has a little bit of a story, (whereas "Pitch Black" is mostly just a non-stop run, away from the monsters)! But both are worth watching (once)! Though this one is my favorite! One man against the war machine! It is a well made, immersive world, starring Vin Diesel! color, 119 mins.
- DirectorAlex ProyasStarsWill SmithBridget MoynahanBruce GreenwoodIn 2035, a technophobic cop investigates a crime that may have been perpetrated by a robot, which leads to a larger threat to humanity.Based on Isaac Asimov's stories. The idea is that in the future, when robots become so intelligent and powerful, that mankind has to build-in certain laws which the robots must follow, such as, "No robot must ever intentionally hurt a human." Starring Will Smith, what happens when a robot breaks the law? Mayhem insues! A good flick for concepts and visual stimulus! color, 115 mins.

A well made movie and a funny, crazy mixed-up universe! color, 109 mins.
- DirectorKaryn KusamaStarsCharlize TheronFrances McDormandSophie OkonedoÆon Flux is a mysterious assassin working for the Monicans, a group of rebels trying to overthrow the government. When she is sent on a mission to kill the Chairman, a whole new mystery is found. Some folks will remember this one as an animation from the MTV television series, "Liquid Television." A very strange surreal future, where a sexy infiltrater must take-out the evil leader of a dystopian society! Starring Charlize Theron and Frances McDormand, can't get much better than that! May contain mature themes and adult situations. Parents, please be advised. color, 93 mins.
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsKeanu ReevesWinona RyderRobert Downey Jr.An undercover cop in a not-too-distant future becomes involved with a dangerous new drug and begins to lose his own identity as a result.A lot of die-hard Philip K Dick fans groaned and moaned when they found out that this movie was being shot in the roto-scoped style (a method of creating an animated effect, by painting over the live action film originally shot). I too had my reservations, knowing the storyline so well, we just didn't want anyone to mess it up! Richard Linklater didn't disappoint! The movie is wonderfully rendered and to some extent enhanced by the animated effect! How else could the scramble suits and drug hallucinations have been so well illustrated? Well acted, well created, an excellent adaptation of the original book! A top ten contender and a must see for all sci-fi fans! color, 100 mins.
- DirectorFrancis LawrenceStarsWill SmithAlice BragaCharlie TahanYears after a plague kills most of humanity and transforms the rest into monsters, the sole survivor in New York City struggles valiantly to find a cure. Will Smith again in a sci-fi film, this time a semi-remake of "The Omega Man" (which was a semi-remake of "The Last Man on Earth", see earlier in the list). But as it is one of my favorite sub-genres, and as this is an excellent version of that story, I had to include this one too! The three sort of make a triumverant, of "must see films" for all post apocalyptic film fans! My one gripe, "Robert Neville (Will Smith's character), you don't let the only non-plague dog in the world go off by itself!" Sorry, didn't mean to make the spoiler! But you have to see this one! color, 101 mins.
- DirectorJ.J. AbramsStarsChris PineZachary QuintoSimon PeggThe brash James T. Kirk tries to live up to his father's legacy with Mr. Spock keeping him in check as a vengeful Romulan from the future creates black holes to destroy the Federation one planet at a time.Okay, I broke my own rules, a few times already! But this one deserves to be here, despite the other "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" entry already being mentioned! And a lot of "Star Trek" fans don't like this version of a prequel to the original television series (it sets-up how Captain Kirk became a captain). But I don't mind it! It even breaks a few of the rules, plotlines from that original series, conveniently explained away some of the discrepancies between the two, by saying that the laws and history in this universe are a little different than the ones in the other, original but parallel one of the TV series. Good enough for me! Lots of action, a real thrill ride, okay let's watch! color, 127 mins.
- DirectorJames CameronStarsSam WorthingtonZoe SaldanaSigourney WeaverA paraplegic Marine dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission becomes torn between following his orders and protecting the world he feels is his home.Beautifully created world, totally immersive reality, wonderful effects, a beautiful film! And it's a wonderful commentary about ecology and what might happen if we were ever to go far into outer space, taking the invasion to alien worlds! Lots of reasons to fall in love with this film! It's not entirely what one might call an art film, or one with heavy content, deep or dark film. But that is one of its pluses, it is very accessible to a wide auidience! We are so glad that James Cameron didn't stop making films with "Titanic!" color, 162 mins.

- DirectorNeill BlomkampStarsSharlto CopleyDavid JamesJason CopeViolence ensues after an extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth finds a kindred spirit in a government agent exposed to their biotechnology.Lots of fun this one! Shot in a docu-drama style, what if aliens landed, but were segregated, "for their own good." But not really! And what if they wanted to leave but again government forces wanted to keep them here, to learn more about their alien technology! "District 9" is a refreshing, innovatively shot film! color, 112 mins.

Build arks to ride-out the upheavals on land. Well it would almost be great, except that life as we all know it would cease to exist! Still a well made film about the possiblity! color, 85 mins.

And he has been in some good films, but none like this one. It may make your brain hurt trying to keep-up with the complex plot and reality twists!
