Votes: 35,009 | Gross: $0.33M
The scene in the young girl's bedroom with her 'friends.' 'Nough said.

Effective movie and well-made, but overplayed in my opinion. Some scary scenes and Jack Nicholson is always fun to watch.
5. Grave Encounters (2011)
Not Rated | 92 min | Horror
For their ghost hunting reality show, a production crew locks themselves inside an abandoned mental hospital that's supposedly haunted - and it might prove to be all too true.
This movie is perfectly watchable, but a tad long for my liking. A great location and the scares keep coming. Some mean ghosts for sure.

After moving into a suburban home, a couple becomes increasingly disturbed by a nightly demonic presence.
Votes: 199,088 | Gross: $107.92M
Part of me hates these movies, but I must admit I can watch them over and over for some reason. I include all three in this slot just because once you've seen one, the others are exactly the same formula.
8. What Lies Beneath (2000)

The wife of a university research scientist believes that her lakeside Vermont home is haunted by a ghost - or that she is losing her mind.

A great movie; well-paced and slowly building to an okay conclusion. Acted very well.

I think this movie is a little over-hyped, but the story is excellently scripted and the movie is extremely tragic.
10. Carnival of Souls (1962)

After a traumatic accident, a woman becomes drawn to a mysterious abandoned carnival.
A cult classic and an okay watch. Some truly creepy scenes.

After Marnie Watson kills her abusive husband in self-defense, she is condemned to house arrest... only to discover that the house is possessed by the enraged and violent spirit of her dead husband.
Kill your abusive husband. Go to prison. Society is appeased...but is the ghost of your 'loving' husband?

A boy who communicates with spirits seeks the help of a disheartened child psychologist.
Votes: 785,311 | Gross: $293.51M
The boy in the hallway...the feet near the bed...spooky stuff. A famous twist ending and the famous line, "I see dead people."
13. The Gravedancers (2006)
R | 95 min | Horror
After a night of drunken exploits, Allison, Harris, and Kira are chased and terrorized by the ghosts of a child pyromaniac, an ax murderer, and a rapist.
Absolutely terrifying depictions of some really nasty spirits. Dancing on graves? No tenks! Movie is okay, the ending is garbage, but man oh man those ghosts are scary looking.
14. The Frighteners (1996)

After a tragic car accident kills his wife, a man discovers he can communicate with the dead to con people. However, when a demonic spirit appears, he may be the only one who can stop it from killing the living and the dead.

Michael J. Fox in good form as a psychic who starts seeing the grim reaper in town. A cool movie and the effects were awesome at the time. A fun watch.

Not only my favorite ghost movie, but one of my favorite comedies. This movie has so many great lines it is unbelievable!
16. Stir of Echoes (1999)

After being hypnotized by his sister in law, a man begins seeing haunting visions of a girl's ghost and a mystery begins to unfold around him.
Votes: 66,611 | Gross: $21.13M
Released around the same time as The Sixth Sense, this movie takes a more deliberate approach to a ghost story. Instead of the ghost being scary, it's the study of a neighborhood's close-knitedness and secrets that I found scariest.
17. Kwaidan (1964)

A collection of four Japanese folk tales with supernatural themes.
A quiet, spooky movie. Long, somewhat confusing, but engrossing nonetheless.

Yo ho ho and a bottle of REDRUM!!!!!!! Haha. Pirate ghosts running rampant in a seaside town founded under malicious circumstances.
19. Poltergeist (1982)
PG | 114 min | Horror, Thriller
A family's home is haunted by a host of ghosts.
Votes: 119,340 | Gross: $76.61M
A great Saturday styled movie. Several terrifying scenarios, tragic ghost motivations, and fun effects all come together to make a fun movie to watch. Scarier still are the subpar sequels that followed. Yikes!!!
