FILM LIFE: Chapters 1 to 29

by Dr-Faustus | created - 23 Sep 2012 | updated - 3 days ago | Public

"By showing hunger, deprivation, starvation and brutality, as well as endurance and nobility, documentaries inform, prod our memories, even stir us to action. Such films do battle for our very soul."-Theodore Bikel

Documentary film not only plays a major role in informing, educating, and raising awareness to issues that affect us all on a global level but, documentaries also have the ability to profoundly affect us on an emotional level. I believe this emotional connection is a fundamental component when viewed in conjunction with an objective analysis of all the facts and data that relate to a particular topic, subject, or event. A symbiotic relationship that can help propagate the passion, empathy, and pragmatism, essential in making an informed and meaningful humanitarian contribution.

The purpose of this list is to try and inspire, raise awareness, document, and provide for a multilateral and progressive approach to its subject-matter. Specifically from a global perspective.

Albert Einstein quote: "A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."

Michio Kaku quotes: "It is often stated that of all the theories proposed in this century, the silliest is the quantum theory. In fact, some say that the only thing that quantum theory has going for it is that it is unquestionably correct."

"Beyond work and love, I would add two other ingredients that give meaning to life. First, to fulfill whatever talents we are born with. However blessed we are by fate with different abilities and strengths, we should try to develop them to the fullest, rather than allow them to atrophy and decay. We all know individuals who did not fulfill the promise they showed in childhood. Many of them became haunted by the image of what they might have become. Instead of blaming fate, I think we should accept ourselves as we are and try to fulfill whatever dreams are within our capability.

Second, we should try to leave the world a better place than when we entered it. As individuals, we can make a difference, whether it is to probe the secrets of Nature, to clean up the environment and work for peace and social justice, or to nurture the inquisitive, vibrant spirit of the young by being a mentor and a guide."

"Physicists are made of atoms. A physicist is an attempt by an atom to understand itself."

Guillermo Gonzalez quote: "There's no obvious reason to assume that the very same rare properties that allow for our existence would also provide the best overall setting to make discoveries about the world around us. We don't think this is merely coincidental. It cries out for another explanation, an explanation that... points to purpose and intelligent design in the cosmos."

Tracy Chapman - 'Heaven's Here On Earth' Lyrics:

"You can look to the stars in search of the answers Look for God and life on distant planets Have your faith in the ever after While each of us holds inside the map to the labyrinth And heaven's here on earth

We are the spirit the collective conscience We create the pain and the suffering and the beauty in this world

Heaven's here on earth In our faith in humankind In our respect for what is earthly In our unfaltering belief in peace and love and understanding

I've seen and met angels wearing the disguise Of ordinary people leading ordinary lives Filled with love, compassion, forgiveness and sacrifice

Heaven's in our hearts In our faith in humankind In our respect for what is earthly In our unfaltering belief in peace and love and understanding

Look around Believe in what you see The kingdom is at hand The promised land is at your feet We can and will become what we aspire to be

If heaven's here on earth If we have faith in humankind And respect for what is earthly And an unfaltering belief that truth is divinity And heaven's here on earth

I've seen spirits I've met angels Touched creations beautiful and wondrous I've been places where I question all I think I know But I believe, I believe, I believe this could be heaven We are born inside the gates with the power to create life And to take it away The world is our temple The world is our church Heaven's here on earth

If we have faith in humankind And respect for what is earthly And an unfaltering belief In peace and love and understanding This could be heaven here on earth

What if the moon never had existed?

Tahereh Mafi quote: "The moon is a loyal companion. It never leaves. It's always there, watching, steadfast, knowing us in our light and dark moments, changing forever just as we do. Every day it's a different version of itself. Sometimes weak and wan, sometimes strong and full of light. The moon understands what it means to be human."

Quote from 'Keeping the Moon' - By Sarah Dessen:

"I don't believe in failure, because simply by saying you've failed, you've admitted you attempted. And anyone who attempts is not a failure. Those who truly fail in my eyes are the ones who never try at all. The ones who sit on the couch and whine and moan and wait for the world to change for them."

Moon Facts

*The moon is not a planet, but a satellite of Earth. *The surface area of the moon is 14,658,000 square miles or 9.4 billion acres. *Only 59% of the moon's surface is visible from Earth. *The moon rotates at 10 miles per hour compared to the Earth's rotation of 1000 miles per hour. *When a month has two full moons, the second full moon is called a blue moon. Another definition of a blue moon is the third full moon in any season (quarter of year) containing 4 total full moons. *From Earth, we always see the same side of the moon; the other side is always hidden. *The dark spots we see on the moon that create the image of the man in the moon are actually craters filled with basalt, which is a very dense material. *The moon is the only extraterrestrial body that has ever been visited by humans. *The first space craft to send back pictures from the moon was Luna 3 (built by the Soviet Union) in October 1959. *The moon has no global magnetic field. *The moon's diameter is about 1/4 the diameter of the Earth. About 49 moons would fit inside the Earth.

Nova Program Description: "'Earth from Space' is a groundbreaking two-hour special that reveals a spectacular new space-based vision of our planet. Produced in extensive consultation with NASA scientists, NOVA takes data from earth-observing satellites and transforms it into dazzling visual sequences, each one exposing the intricate and surprising web of forces that sustains life on earth. Viewers witness how dust blown from the Sahara fertilizes the Amazon; how a vast submarine 'waterfall' off Antarctica helps drive ocean currents around the world; and how the Sun's heating up of the southern Atlantic gives birth to a colossally powerful hurricane. From the microscopic world of water molecules vaporizing over the ocean to the magnetic field that is bigger than Earth itself, the show reveals the astonishing beauty and complexity of our dynamic planet."

* Climate change affects the social and environmental determinants of health - clean air, safe drinking water, sufficient food and secure shelter. *Between 2030 and 2050, climate change is expected to cause approximately 250 000 additional deaths per year, from malnutrition, malaria, diarrhoea and heat stress. *The direct damage costs to health (i.e. excluding costs in health-determining sectors such as agriculture and water and sanitation), is estimated to be between US$ 2-4 billion/year by 2030. *Areas with weak health infrastructure - mostly in developing countries - will be the least able to cope without assistance to prepare and respond. *Reducing emissions of greenhouse gases through better transport, food and energy-use choices can result in improved health, particularly through reduced air pollution.

WHO | 7 Million Premature Deaths Annually Linked to Air Pollution

25 MARCH 2014 | GENEVA - In new estimates released today, WHO reports that in 2012 around 7 million people died - one in eight of total global deaths - as a result of air pollution exposure. This finding more than doubles previous estimates and confirms that air pollution is now the world's largest single environmental risk. Reducing air pollution could save millions of lives.

Iain Stewart quote: "The 21st century is like a golden age for geologists. We live in a age where we can see geological processes going on in front of our eyes. We're probably the first generation of geologists to be able to do that, and that's for two reasons. One, we have instruments with such precision we can measure things in great detail, and satellites that can tell us of millimeters of movement within decades. And on the other hand, we are driving change so fast that we can see it happening before our eyes - in terms of changes in land use and in the chemistry of the oceans and atmosphere, as well as the fact that humans move more matter artificially than all of the erosion processes do, with bulldozers, digging and mining, etc."

David Attenborough quote: "Our planet, the Earth, is, as far as we know, unique in the universe. It contains life. Even in it's most barren stretches, there are animals. Around the equator, where those two essentials for life, sunshine and moisture, are most abundant, great forests grow. And here plants and animals proliferate in such numbers that we still have not even named all the different species. Here, animals and plants, insects and birds, mammals and man live together in intimate and complex communities, each dependent on one another. Two thirds of the surface of this unique planet are covered by water, and it was here indeed that life began. From the oceans, it has spread even to the summits of the highest mountains as animals and plants have responded to the changing face of the Earth."

And it's an interesting biological fact that all of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefor, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea - whether it is to sail or to watch it - we are going back from whence we came."

David Attenborough quote: "Dwarfed by the vast expanse of the open ocean, the biggest animal that has ever lived on our planet. A blue whale, 30 meter long and weighing over 200 tonnes. It's far bigger than even the biggest dinosaur. It's tongue weighs as much as an elephant, it's heart is the size of a car and some of it's blood vessels are so wide you could swim down them. It's tail alone is the width of a small aircraft's wings. It's streamlining, close to perfection, enables it to cruise at 20 knots. It's one of the fastest animals in the sea. The ocean's largest inhabitant feeds almost exclusively on one of the smallest krill, a crustacean just a few centimeters long. Gathered in a shoal, krill stain the sea red. A single blue whale in a day can consume 40 million of them. Despite the enormous size of blue whales we know very little about them. Their migration routes are still a mystery and we have no idea where they go to breed. They are a dramatic reminder of how much we still have to learn about the ocean and the creatures that live there. Our planet is a blue planet."

Rob Stewart quote: "Many of us are ignorant to the true severity of our situation. Historically, whenever our planet has reached a similar threshold, severe global change has always followed. Human-kind has never experienced a predicament as severe as the one we find ourselves in today. However, I strongly believe that with new territory comes great opportunity. Now it's a matter of deciding whether we'll accept that opportunity for the better or the worse."

An encounter with the predator we love to fear.

Directors: Luke Cresswell, Steve McNicholas, David Newton

Votes: 133

Steve McNicholas quote: "Our mission is to change people's attitudes toward the great white. It's not the menacing, evil predator it's made out to be. It's simply performing its crucial role at the top of the ocean's food chain. Great whites are not monsters any more than the polar bears or lions that we revere."

Quote from Wikipedia: "Predators may increase the biodiversity of communities by preventing a single species from becoming dominant. Such predators are known as keystone species and may have a profound influence on the balance of organisms in a particular ecosystem. Introduction or removal of this predator, or changes in its population density, can have drastic cascading effects on the equilibrium of many other populations in the ecosystem."
