The story of an office that faces closure when the company decides to downsize its branches. A documentary film crew follow staff and the manager David Brent as they continue their daily lives.

Stars: Ricky Gervais, Martin Freeman, Mackenzie Crook, Lucy Davis

Votes: 77,377

Easily the greatest sitcom of all time, by a country mile. It takes comedy to whole new level. Ricky Gervais as David Brent is the finest comedy performance I've ever seen. The scripts are immaculate, the characters are incredible, the episodes are consistently excellent, it went out with a bang and left you wanting more. It's a joy to behold. I can't express the brilliance of this show into words. I've rewatched this series many times and it gets better with every watch. David Brent is the best comedy character ever and The Office is the greatest sitcom ever. So...

The continuing misadventures of neurotic New York stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld and his equally neurotic New York friends.

Stars: Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Michael Richards, Jason Alexander

Votes: 197,675

The best American sitcom of all time. It influenced so many of my favourites. It's hilarious, the characters are perfect and the writing by Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David is one of the greatest. Kramer is a phenomenom, but I still believe George trumps him. Fantastic.

Stars: Steve Coogan, Phil Cornwell, Simon Greenall, Felicity Montagu

Votes: 14,738

One of the best comedy characters, by far. He's an excellent character and Steve Coogan plays him brilliantly. His relationship with Lynne is one of a kind, unbelievable sitcom.

Andy Millman is an actor with ambition and a script. Reduced to working as an extra with a useless agent, Andy's attempts to boost his career invariably end in failure and embarrassment.

Stars: Ricky Gervais, Ashley Jensen, Stephen Merchant, Shaun Williamson

Votes: 44,702

The difficult second series? Ricky Gervais & Stephen Merchant knocked another one out of the park with Extras. It's absolutely excellent. An absolute gem. Introducing Steve into a main acting role was a decision that paid off, he's hilarious. Andy Millman's Big Brother speech is one of my favourite TV moments.

BEST EPISODE: "Kate Winslet"

This is one of the cleverest comedies I've ever seen. Just genius. Brilliantly written, with one of the best ensemble casts in sitcom. It's coming back too, which is good.

Larry David...the social assassin. Brilliant study of human encounter and social awkwardness and honesty. Mostly improvised but it still has those elements what made Seinfeld so great.

My favourite sitcom for many years. I watched it all of the time. So much so that I could recite episodes word for word. I was obsessed. I think the constant reruns eventually made me tired of it, which is a shame. It's still one of my favourites though.

A comedy with heart and laughs, what more could you ask for? It's really clever, particularly when Michael Scott was involved. But Dwight Schrute is the stand out character in this comedy. A superb remake, it can stand alongside some of the greats.

British classic. Some consider it the greatest British sitcom of all time. I remember watching it when I was really young and loving it. I've recently re-watched it, I appreciated it a lot more and it's still an excellent series. Basil Fawlty is an amazing character. A comedy and character that has stood the test of time.

Stars: David Jason, Nicholas Lyndhurst, Roger Lloyd Pack, Buster Merryfield

Votes: 35,812

Another classic. A few years ago, this would be higher in the list. I'm still a big fan, of course, it still has some hilarious moments, but I don't think John Sullivan should of continued it after the Christmas Trilogy. It baffles me, you get an ending that wraps things up and resolves their constant chase for a fortune, then they bring it back. Other than that though, really great show. Del Boy is an absolute joy.
