My Top Ten of 2012 +

My top ten plus all the films that i saw in 2012 ranked, in theaters and at home. US Releases only, so some of these came out a while ago somewhere in the world.

The Master (2012)

“ *Spoilers* I adore this one. It declares why we are the way we are in the 21st Century through one very horny sailor in the 20th century named Freddie Quell. How I took it; its about this sailor sleeping next to a sand woman on the foreign beaches after the war is over, and through his dreams he finds a pathway into creating a religion, By following this Scientology like family. Perhaps he's met this religious group in a past or future life and that is what he's dreaming of. Which would then provoke him enough to act on it throughout his entire present life. Hence, Quell is The Master. But he's been scarred by a tough life and war, like many of his companions as well, and that's where the message applies. In a post 9/11 America, we're anxious and aberrated. So we turn to our vices (drug, drink, money, religion, what have you..) for satisfaction, much like Quell does. But in the end, and this is debatable, it keeps us in the past rather than in the present. Because whenever Lancaster Dodd processes Freddie, he can't help but be taken not to a past life but to his life before the war. And it leads him to an old girlfriend who eventually moved on from Quell. An answer that took him ages to achieve but ended up nowhere. Although I've said a great deal here, this isn't even the whole story. The film is edited so that you don't know when these moments are taking place but with enough thought provided anyone can make it out after repeated viewings. It's easy to write something off as pretentious, it's a bit more difficult to actually solve a film's puzzle. This film is far from what it's negative criticism has implied, just take a look at the vagina on the cover. That's one for the fans. ” - EvinC

He has an interesting way of making a bad situation take a turn for the worse, all without making an uneven transition.
