My Personal Top 20 Video Gamesby Arthquake | created - 06 Jan 2012 | updated - 27 Apr 2015 | Public
Mostly games that guided me through my childhood or made me think about them a long time.
1. Final Fantasy VII (1997 Video Game)
T | Adventure, Drama, Fantasy
A former soldier from an evil company joins a mercenary clan to fight the company he once served.
Played it for the first time in 2010 and brought me back into my innocent childhood days with my still beloved PSOne. Magnificent story about the meaning of life and how our world is destroyed by our own egoism in many ways, lovely painted backgrounds; as a PSOne child, I can live with the old graphics, Uematsu´s best soundtrack in my opinion. All FMVs still look awesome, too. I love the battle system and I liked it to try different Materia setups. A huge and mysterious world to discover with some nice details. Funny and multilayered playable characters, a huge badass as an endboss with an epic unforgettable theme and many great sidecharacters. AND, possibly the best ending in any kind of medium I´ve ever seen in my whole life. Brilliant until the final end (and sound...).
2. Metal Gear Solid (1998 Video Game)
M | Action, Adventure, Drama
A crack government anti-terrorist squad takes over an obscure Alaskan nuclear disposal facility. Solid Snake is up for the task to infiltrate the facility, rescue the two hostages and thwart the terrorists' plans.
I played this game alongside my older brother and the whole filmesque presentation, the great atmosphere, the fun gameplay and the unbelievable great ending with Liquid and Solid totally blowed my mind. And ´´The Best Is Yet To Come´´ MUST be played at my funeral ;)
3. Hogs of War (2000 Video Game)
T | Action, Adventure, Comedy
It´s actually just a Worms 3D Clone but I loved the whole presentation with (guinea) pigs fighting in the war for some stupid food, I think it´s a great war parody and shows how useless war actually is because the pigs just fight for some food and not for something that could be really worth fighting for and the german voice actors were all top-notch. I don´t know how often I´ve played this one through but it still makes fun nowadays and the great multiplayer is still a beast with some friends.
4. Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! (1999 Video Game)
E | Action, Adventure, Comedy
Spyro's back! This time around Spyro and Sparx want to take a vacation after their last adventure. And what would be a better place than the dragon theme park "Dragon Shores". But before ... See full summary »
I just love this little fantasy 3D Jump N Run game with its dumb but funny characters, the great level design and the terrific soundtrack by maestro Stewart Copeland, whose pieces really helped to bring the game such a special atmosphere that I still might get some goosebumps whenever I enter Winter Tundra again. What a perfect synthesizer sound for a cold, snowy ice world map in the middle of nowhere...
5. Poketto Monsutâ Aka (1996 Video Game)
E | Action, Adventure, Family
Play as a young Pokémon trainer trying to catch all 150 Pokémon.
Director: Satoshi Tajiri
Hands down still the best Pokémon game to me because no other edition had such easy but memorable designs, such a splendid soundtrack, such a quick but fine gameplay and so many other details that you just see, when you really look at the game and not just think ´´Oh,it´s such a cute little Pokémon game´´. NOPE! Chuck Testa says that Gary is in fact a real a++hole and doesn´t give you any chance to celebrate your victories against him. The laboratory at the Cinnabar Island shows the darker side of the game and how the humans just don´t think about feelings of the animals and use them as their entertainment products. Of course everything in this game is packed in a childish way, because first of all, the kiddies must buy it but in fact all the other editions AFTER this showed me finally that Game Freak just doesn´t want to create a cute game for little children but a game for people who can see beyond the veneer and look how Pokémon are often misused as animals in real life are misused by us humans who often don´t think of any feelings and just play with them for entertainment. As for this, I think the series is superb and there might be a chance, that there´ll be a Pokémon game that can really match my expectations on a even deeper story and just doesn´t look only sweet for kids, too.
6. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2010 Video Game)
E | Action, Adventure, Family
Mario goes back in the galaxy to save Princess Peach from Bowser.
Possibly the most perfect paced video game I´ve ever played. So many ideas, so many little details, so much love in designs, a partial really epic soundtrack and the best controls I´ve ever had in a game makes this masterpiece to an absolute must have for any Jump N Run fan with a good taste ; )
7. Shenmue II (2001 Video Game)
T | Action, Adventure, Crime
Ryo continues his quest of vengence for his father. In his second outing Ryo must travel to Hong Kong to have a lethal face off with Lan-Di.
It hurts to see that this atmospheric magnum opus still isn´t continued because every stupid Sonic game might sell better than a so much needed Shenmue III. The game gave me a really immersive experience and I thought at the end, that I need to play the next GODDAMN SEQUEL RIGHT NOW! But the rest...is history. Thank you, Sega -.-
8. Silent Hill 2 (2001 Video Game)
M | Adventure, Drama, Horror
After receiving a letter from his late wife, from Silent Hill, James Sunderland makes his way to the town in an attempt to find her.
Masterly storytelling meets survival horror game meets one of the best and scariest soundtracks of all time meets one of the most iconic characters in video game history and meets my top 10 list :)
9. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004 Video Game)
M | Action, Adventure, Comedy
A family tragedy prompts gangster Carl "CJ" Johnson to return home, only to find it overrun by crime and corruption, which he must regain control of the streets before it gets even worse.
The best atmosphere in an open world game with a totally crazy world full of junk, crack and casinos. Welcome to San Andreas, baby! No, really, in my opinion the best GTA until now. I liked the 90s flair more than the 80s flair, simply because I´m a 90s child.
10. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (2000 Video Game)
T | Sport
Get more air, pull off more insane tricks and unlock new characters and levels in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2.
The best skating video game. So many awesome levels, amazing Alternative Rock soundtrack, some funny easter eggs and a cool level editor.
11. Persona 4 Golden (2012 Video Game)
M | Adventure, Drama, Mystery
Persona 4 golden takes place in a fictional Japanese countryside and is indirectly related to both Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 and the Persona 2 games. The player-named main protagonist ... See full summary »
Great, adorable characters, wonderful art direction and a super cool, upbeat soundtrack define this game. A very well designed battle system and the great Social Link component add just more reasons to play this gaming gem.
12. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (1996 Video Game)
K-A | Action, Adventure, Comedy
Just as Mario trounces Bowser for the millionth time, a giant, malevolent sword crashes into Bowser's keep, casting Mario, Princess Toadstool and Bowser far and wide, and breaking seven pieces from the wish-granting Star Road.
Just a magical experience for me as Mario stars in his first RPG. You can clearly see the Squaresoft influence in terms of look and feel of the whole game which should tell you how awesome it is. In my opinion Yoko Shimomuras best soundtrack and the battle mechanics are a lot of fun, too.
13. Xenoblade Chronicles (2010 Video Game)
T | Action, Adventure, Fantasy
In a world of endless ocean, all life lives on the decaying corpses of two gigantic titans, the Bionis and Mechonis. When the army of Mechonis attacks his home, young scientist Shulk sets out for revenge.
Great story even though not in the scale of Xenogears. The soundtrack is beautiful, the world keeps you attracted for a long while and there are so many good gameplay mechanics which other JRPGs should take a look at. I don´t need to mention that the battle mechanics were also awesome but in the next game they should include more options than just spamming the enemies with different physical attacks even though it was enough fun for me.
14. Gravity Daze (2012 Video Game)
T | Action, Adventure, Fantasy
In Gravity Rush you take the roll of a young girl named Kat who wakes up with no memories of her past life or where she was. Within the game you play to defeat various enemies and reunite ... See full summary »
I totally adore the atmosphere of the game with its brilliant art style and perfect score by genius Kohei Tanaka. And I love the feeling I get whenever I fly into the sky and the whole world turns upside down and vice versa. If I could just do more activities in the city, this game could easily get into my top 5 of all time.
Awesome gameplay, meh story. The soundtrack is surprisingly good, the only downside of the game is that it lacks content. More DLCs would've been welcomed..
16. Crash Bandicoot: Warped (1998 Video Game)
E | Action, Adventure, Comedy
Crash Bandicoot, Aku Aku and Coco travel through time to stop Dr. Cortex and Aku Aku's evil twin brother Uka Uka from enslaving Earth.
One of my first games I´ve ever played and it still holds up today. Created by the masterminds of Naughty Dog, this game might be the only contestant to Super Mario Galaxy 2 in terms of perfect, linear Jump N Run level design. I love the different themes, the awesome skills Crash gains and generally the adorable, cartoonish appeal of the game.
17. Tekken 3 (1997 Video Game)
T | Action, Fantasy, Sci-Fi
19 years after the second King of Iron Fist Tournament, Heihachi Mishima hosts the third Tournament to attract Toshin, a God who killed the mother of his grandson, Jin Kazama.
My favorite game in the series. The best character line up , the best cutscenes before the series took a step into a less serious level with messing up some of the stories. Oh, and the multiplayer modes were also a blast to play! Tekken Ball <3
18. God of War III (2010 Video Game)
M | Action, Adventure, Drama
Armed with his deadly double-chained blades, Kratos must take on Greek mythology's darkest creatures to destroy Olympus and the mighty Zeus himself.
Great conclusion to the God of War trilogy with Kratos once again delivering an even more angrier performance than in the previous game. The whole world is collapsing and you are the reason why it does but you as Kratos don´t give a *beep* and just want your well deserved revenge. Probably the best PS3 game I have played.
19. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (2010 Video Game)
M | Action, Thriller, War
Bravo 2 are back, and are wanting to go home more than ever.
The campaign is forgettable, but the online multiplayer is the first and only multiplayer mode I´ve played in a long period and I got totally sucked in. Had a blast with it even though getting more weapons would be better as I lost my motivation as soon as I got the platinum trophy.
20. Resident Evil (1996 Video Game)
M | Action, Horror
The RPD are investigating strange cannibalized corpses on the outskirts of the city. The Alpha squad, Jill and Chris, are sent to locate missing team members. While there mutated dogs cause them to flee into a supposedly abandoned mansion.
I always prefer the claustrophobic aspect of this game over the latter games in which it was imho too easy to run away from the zombies. In this game, there is a bit more challenge and the riddles are also great while the whole voice acting is infamously bad. Barry Burton for president! ;)
