My Favorite TV Shows (Ongoing List)

by thebusymouse | created - 04 Jan 2012 | updated - 14 Jan 2012 | Public

This is an ongoing list of my favorite TV shows. They are not in order; they usually vary according to my mood. Please DO check them out, you won't regret it! :) [Anyone who asks, I'm seventeen and nowhere near a rental so I don't have much classics in here.]

Note: No Ryan Murphy shows are included. Why American Horror Story's rating is still higher than most shows I have on this list continues to perplex me. I mean, it was intriguing the first few episodes but that continued to stumble into ridiculous and laughable.

Note 2: If there isn't any commentary, I'll be back for that later. Feel free to suggest some shows in the comment section! :D

"Now the story of a wealthy family who lost everything, and the one son who had no choice but to keep them all together. It's Arrested Development." First, I was skeptical about this show because it was praised so much that I was afraid that it wasn't going to live up to my expectations. But guess what? It did. And not only that, it surpassed. Every episode gets funnier. You'll find yourself quoting them before you know it. "I've made a huge mistake.", "Michael!", Tobias's one-liners, and so much more. Never miss this show. (UPDATE: excited for the movieee!! and the mini series before that!!)

Stars: Kristen Bell, Percy Daggs III, Jason Dohring, Francis Capra

This TV Show made the feminist and tv critic in me happy. I'm referring to the first season, by the way. You'll find many witty one-liners and amusing storylines especially in the first season. No, wait. Just watch the first season and forget the rest. You can watch the other two but they aren't as good and enjoyable as the first.

A father recounts to his children, through a series of flashbacks, the journey he and his four best friends took leading up to him meeting their mother.

Stars: Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris

It may be a sitcom but honestly, it could do without the laughtrack. I usually fall asleep to shows with laughtracks but this isn't one of them. Everything is so thought out and beautifully written (not very classy but still, it has that "effect" I'm looking for) especially those episodes written by the power duo themselves, Bays and Thomas!

The further adventures of the time travelling alien adventurer known as the Doctor, a Time Lord/Lady who can change appearance and gender, and his/her companions.

Stars: Peter Capaldi, Pearl Mackie, Jenna Coleman, Matt Smith

The reboot of the 1963 TV show. DW has become an iconic legend in England and is currently taking the world by storm. Why not be a part of it? The first four seasons are enjoyable and family-friendly under the lead of RTD. The last three have become more mature and darker than before under the twisted mind of Steven Moffat, nevertheless it's still good despite some laughable storylines. The reason why this still remains a classic lies on how it manages to stay good despite all those rubbish episodes. Definitely one to watch, especially for your younger siblings! :)

Stars: William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker

Doctor Who is a fantasy show about an alien travelling across time and space in a blue police box. Despite the silly introduction, Doctor Who is a heartwarming show about adventure, family and love! You'll find yourself crying and laughing all through seven doctors and their companions!

Stars: Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc

Friends is one of those shows that never fails to make you laugh over and over again even though you've seen it hundreds of times already. It's become one of my favourites because of the characters not the story themselves. You can find yourself relating to their story. Do not watch this show if you're in it just for the Ross/Rachel storyline. It's so much more than that!

Stars: Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin

I've always been a Whedon fan and Firefly definitely did not disappoint. Please make sure to watch it in the order Whedon wanted it and not what the Network ordered. One of the most female-friendly shows that appealed to men too. The creativity, the "this-could-happen-in-the-future" effect will surely capture your attention.

Stars: Sarah Michelle Gellar, Nicholas Brendon, Alyson Hannigan, Anthony Head

Votes: 110,223

I love this series because it reclaimed the original idea of the movie before it. Whedon's frustration at how Buffy became a comedy at Hollywood definitely fueled this show into becoming one of the best in its time. Every episode will either make you laugh, cry or scar you to your very core. I still find myself singing along to the songs of their musical episode, "Once More With Feeling", that started the chain of TV Shows with musical episodes (that I know).

Stars: Dan Castellaneta, Nancy Cartwright, Julie Kavner, Yeardley Smith

Votes: 301,883

The earlier seasons are definitely a must-watch because they are more well-written that these of today. Nevertheless, it still continues to be funny. I enjoy their halloween specials too especially Treehouse of Horror V which I consider to be one of their best episodes!

In the unreal world of Sacred Heart Hospital, intern John "J.D." Dorian learns the ways of medicine, friendship, and life.

Stars: Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, John C. McGinley

Votes: 210,393

I have always loved large ensembles but there are few those who can manage them (Whedon has proved to be terrific at this while Ryan Murphy can go suck it.) Scrubs has always been underrated for being "too quirky" but its the quirkiness itself that led this show to my top shows. Scrubs focuses on the lives of the people working at the fictional hospital, Sacred Heart. Despite its main character being JD, it's a nice "autobiography" for my other favorite character, Dr. Perry Cox. You'll enjoy JD's imaginary sequences, Elliot's neurotic adventures, Dr. Cox's long lists (AND HUGH JACKMAN) and more! :)

Stars: Lee Pace, Anna Friel, Chi McBride, Jim Dale

Shows forever on my "WHY WERE YOU CANCELLED" list. One of the most gorgeous shows to ever air on TV not to mention, one of the most creative storylines too. We follow Ned, the piemaker, in his adventures in "making pies and waking the dead". The show features a lot of colors and the narration over the scenes is just perfect for the tone of the show. Props to the casting director too!

I love how this show portrays women in the field of Science--they aren't "geeky" or wear those big goofy eyeglasses. They're beautiful and remarkable women who have their own beliefs and principles. Oh, the perfect balance of gore, crime, thrill and so much more is enough to hook you in! Especially the first three seasons! :)

It took me a while to watch this because I was afraid that it would be as cheesy as the original not to mention the sexist overtones but Ugly Betty surpassed my expectations and delivered a creative and witty batch of storylines that despite having cliches continues to be suprising and heartwarming.

Dan Harmon is a genius. The cast is brilliant and the characters are outstanding. Also a non-straw feminist character is a plus! Abed Nadir is a crowd favorite for being the one who always breaks that "wall" that divides tv shows from reality. Every episode is just a delight. Be sure to catch the first season's outstanding parody of modern movies, "Modern Warfare". Their latest parody of Glee is just brilliant from cheesy dance steps to oversexualization of teens. You do not want to miss this.
