Of the 5 nominated for best documentary, this is the one I was least interested in seeing. In fact, out of the hundreds of movies that played at TIFF last year this was one of the ones I was least interested in seeing. It lived up to my expectations. Some of the dances were interesting to watch. It was definitely cool seeing them performed in places other than on the stage. The real problem is that I don't see how it can be classified as a documentary. This wasnt even about how each performance was choreographed. It is a series of 'staged' performances with one or 2 sentences spoken in between each performance by one of the dancers. Even when the dancers are speaking they are performing because the words are just played over a shot of them making themselves look dramatic. If you take something like Paris, Je T'aime but add in a sentence or two of one of the actors talking about what it was like to act in that short film after each short then does that make it a documentary? I don't see how the academy allows this to be in the documentary category when 90%+ of the film is a performance. Either way I'm now down to 18 nominated movies to watch (not including the shorts). I watched 'The Oscar Nominated Animated Shorts'. Pretty disappointing that you pay to see that and it doesn't even include all 5 nominated shorts. Apparantly Pixars nominated short will be playing before Brave in the summer. Anyway...the shorts I did watch:

Dimanche - not a great story, even worse animation. Not sure why it was nominated, but it is Canadian. 4/10

A Morning stroll - about a chicken walking down the stret in 3 different eras. Weird, funny and definitely an in between for next movie day. This was my favourite of the shorts, but it won't win. 8/10

The fantastic flying books of Mr Morris lessmore - this one was fun and had the best animation of the the nominees i watched. If it wasnt for the pixar one then this would be a lock to win. 6/10

Wild Life - this short was kind of boring, but had a nice animation style. It looked like everything was painted. You could see brushstrokesin the animation. 5/10

There were also a few extra shorts that are not nominated, one of which(amazonia) was better than a few of the nominated shorts ” - svenning123
