1. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

In this cult horror classic, five friends pick up a traumatized young hitchhiker, and find themselves stalked and hunted by a deformed chain saw-wielding killer and his family of psychopaths.
Votes: 109,572 | Gross: $30.86M
Easily my all-time favorite. The ominous atmosphere, the quiet sense of foreboding, and the grainy, realistic look and feel of this film have yet to be matched. And very little gore, too! It's funny reading some of the old reviews describing how "bloody" and "gory" the film was - it's amazing what the mind will conjure up when you feed it with just a little bit of suggestion. Today's all-gore-torture-porn directors could learn a thing or two from this classic. I mean, I'm sure that most of them will cite TCM as one of their favorites, but they have obviously learned very little from it.
2. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
R | 118 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller
A young F.B.I. cadet must receive the help of an incarcerated and manipulative cannibal killer to help catch another serial killer, a madman who skins his victims.

Two American college students on a walking tour of Britain are attacked by a werewolf that none of the locals will admit exists.
Votes: 74,424 | Gross: $30.57M
Horror. Comedy. Masterpiece. And special f/x that make today's CGI look silly. I can't stand CGI!! It has its place--it worked well for movies like Independence Day, Avatar and the LOTR trilogy--, but it should have no place in HORROR!
5. The Exorcist (1973)

Votes: 15,252 | Gross: $4.00M
The power of suggestion. This movie is all about atmosphere and suggestion - The Val Lewton formula: "A love story, three scenes of suggested horror and one of actual violence. Fadeout. It's all over in less than 70 minutes." I can't imagine that formula working with today's blood & violence-obsessed youth. 10/10

Votes: 4,604 | Gross: $0.24M
This is more of a fantasy movie than a horror or thriller, but the few thrilling scenes it has are quite scary... and it was always in the horror-section of my video store. Ah, video stores... ask your parents about them, kids.

Yes, I know, this film doesn't fall into either the horror or thriller category. So? It's called "The Curse of the Cat People"! With a title like that, it's going on my list. And it's also one of the greatest, most imaginative curve-balls of a sequel ever made: you're going to follow up a story about a vengeful, homicidal cat-woman with a story about a lonely, over-imaginative little girl who befriends some lonely, crazy old lady and who may or may not be being visited by the ghost of said cat-woman? Awesome!
