Some Old Sci-Fi Movie Dialogue
This is my list of sci-fi/horror movies and TV series, mostly from the 1950s and 1960s, possibly 1970s and 1980s, with some interesting dialogue. I was inspired to create this list after hearing a lot of old sci-fi dialogue sampled in various music genres.

- DirectorNathan JuranStarsJohn AgarJoyce MeadowsRobert FullerAn evil alien brain from the planet Arous hijacks the body of an Earth scientist in order to control the Earth.Gor: Your feeling of helplessness is your best friend, savage. When I am occupying your body, or in my present transitory form, I am without substance and indestructible. You are fortunate that Gor, one of the greatest intellects in a world where intelligence is all, has chosen to use your body. I, Gor, in your stupid body, will have power of life and death over this civilisation. Through me you shall have power such as no man has ever seen before in the history of your planet. The power of pure intellect.
Steve: I will return to my planet, Arous, and through its vast intellect I will become master of the universe. After I'm gone, your Earth will be free to live out its miserable span of existence as one of my satellites, and that's how it's going to be. That'll be all for now, gentlemen. I will preside over a meeting at the United Nations building at ten o'clock in the evening the day after tomorrow. You will all be there. After all, you have no other choice, have you?
General Brown: As one of the two delegates in this room that attended your "demonstration" this morning, I would like to assure the other delegates at this table that there is absolutely no doubt of your power to destroy. I saw it. I saw an American colonel killed, burned to a crisp by radiation with one look from this man, after the officer had fired at him point-blank with no effect. I saw him wipe out a city of concrete and steel, and a hundred tanks, trucks, guns, without leaving this room, by some power of mind. Gentlemen, I am convinced. My government's convinced. And my advice to you and to your governments is to take what this ... this man says as a most serious matter. - DirectorRobert WiseStarsMichael RenniePatricia NealHugh MarloweAn alien lands in Washington, D.C. and tells the people of Earth that they must live peacefully or be destroyed as a danger to other planets.Gabriel Heatter: And now on this Sunday morning, we ask some questions that have been haunting the entire nation for two whole days. This creature. Where is he? What is he up to? If he can build a spaceship that can fly to Earth, and a robot that can destroy our tanks and guns, what other terrors can he unleash at will? Obviously the monster must be found. He must be tracked down like a wild animal. He must be destroyed. But where would such a creature hide? Would he disappear into the north woods? Would he crawl into the sewers of some great city? Everybody agrees there is grave danger. The question remains, what can we do to protect ourselves? What measures can we take to neutralise this menace from another world? Destroy it? Of course, but how? And if we do destroy it, what do we face in retaliation?
Klaatu: I am leaving soon, and you will forgive me if I speak bluntly. The universe grows smaller every day, and the threat of aggression by any group, anywhere, can no longer be tolerated. There must be security for all, or no-one is secure. Now, this does not mean giving up any freedom, except the freedom to act irresponsibly. Your ancestors knew this when they made laws to govern themselves and hired policemen to enforce them. We of the other planets have long accepted this principle. We have an organisation for the mutual protection of all planets, and for the complete elimination of aggression. The test of any such higher authority is, of course, the police force that supports it. For our policemen, we created a race of robots. Their function is to patrol the planets in spaceships like this one, and preserve the peace. In matters of aggression, we have given them absolute power over us. This power cannot be revoked. At the first sign of violence, they act automatically against the aggressor. The penalty for provoking their action is too terrible to risk. The result is we live in peace, without arms or armies, secure in the knowledge that we are free from aggression and war, free to pursue more profitable enterprises. We do not pretend to have achieved perfection, but we do have a system, and it works. I came here to give you these facts. It is no concern of ours how you run your own planet. But if you threaten to extend your violence, this Earth of yours will be reduced to a burned-out cinder. Your choice is simple. Join us and live in peace, or pursue your present course and face obliteration. We shall be waiting for your answer. The decision rests with you. - DirectorFred F. SearsStarsHugh MarloweJoan TaylorDonald CurtisExtraterrestrials traveling in high-tech flying saucers contact a scientist as part of a plan to enslave the inhabitants of Earth.Narrator: Since biblical times, Man has witnessed and recorded strange manifestations in the sky and speculated on the possibilities of visitors from another world. Today, from the skies of California, the fields of Kansas, the rice paddies of the Orient, the air lanes of the world, come persistent reports of UFOs - Unidentified Flying Objects, which we have come to know as flying saucers. In Dayton, Ohio, the Air Intelligence Command gathers and sifts data from all quarters of the globe. Ninety-seven percent of the objects prove, on investigation, to be of natural origin, while three percent still are listed as unknown. The Air Force is aware of the widely held belief that some of these could be flying saucers from another planet. While there is nothing conclusive in the evidence, the probing and digesting of information about UFOs continues unceasingly. As a result, headquarters of the Hemispheric Defense Command in Colorado Springs issued an order: all military installations are to fire on sight at any flying objects not identifiable. But even as they did so, the military wondered whether their scientific know-how and their best weapons would be effective in any battle of the Earth versus the flying saucers.
Russell: Yeah, today I've got a hot date with a three-stage rocket. Well ... now, please, no interruptions. Because of recent scientific advances, it is now possible to realise an ancient dream - the exploration of outer space. To prepare for this great stride forward, we are assembling data on conditions at atmospheric levels beyond those hitherto explored. To collect the necessary data, unmanned automatic observation posts are being sent up in multiple-stage rockets to a distance hundreds of miles above the Earth's surface. There, swinging in endless orbits around our planet, will be 12 tiny man-made satellites, or moons. They will report to us by radio, thus providing primary information needed to prepare the way for our ascent into space. The effects of gravitational loss, showers of meteoric dust, the fierce and undiluted heat of the sun, the cosmic radiation, all will be studied and analysed. At the present time we have launched ten of the artificial satellites, or birds, as we call them. We-- Do you hear something?
Trailer Narrator: Flying saucers have invaded our planet. Washington, London, Paris, Moscow, are key targets. The whole world is under attack. Can it survive? Never before has the screen reached such heights of excitement. Breathtaking spectacle, hair-raising terror. See the saucer mens' high frequency disintegrator. See flying saucers travel thousands of miles in seconds. See great cities levelled by flying saucer monsters. - DirectorArthur CrabtreeStarsMarshall ThompsonTerry KilburnMichael BalfourA scientist's thoughts materialize as an army of invisible brain-shaped monsters (complete with spinal-cord tails!) who terrorize an American military base in this nightmarish chiller.Walgate: There were many things you didn't know, my child. If you had, you'd never have come here again. You can see it later. I knew I could never succeed on the principles of telepathy. I needed to stimulate my brain to the extent that I could detach thought from my conscious to give it a separate entity of its own. I concentrated on the simplest experiment to turn the page of a book. I designed an instrument to create a sudden and powerful electrical boost to help me free my thought. But each application of the electric charge created a shock almost equal to electrocution. It made me ill. Dr. Bradley diagnosed exhaustion. He thought my illness was caused by overwork in getting my papers ready for publication. He introduced me to Barbara Griselle. With Barbara as my secretary, I was able to satisfy my publisher and continue my experiments to materialise thought. For a long time I persisted in this one experiment without success. Until one night. The lightning, in striking my house, gave my instruments a sudden violent charge of power, and my thought was free. Free to turn the page of a book. I altered the design of my equipment to generate these violent power boosts, but it was very dangerous and I could only undergo each experiment after a long period of rest. Whenever I felt well enough to absorb the shock, I found no difficulty in moving small objects. Eventually I developed a certain tolerance to the high voltages I used, but what I really needed for regular experiments was a new form of power, something that was smoother, something that would flow through my brain without causing collapse. A new atomic plant at the airbase provided me with this power. I devised additional apparatus that enabled me to divert a portion of the atomic power that was radiating between the ground station and the radar aircraft circling 40,000 feet above. It was power which I could control, and I learned how to amplify my thoughts without hurting myself. I was able to detach my thoughts and allow them to work on their own. I began to devise a being into which the thought, once released, could enter and preserve itself for all humanity. I envisaged something akin to the human brain, with life and mobility, but without the limitations of Man's body. I concentrated my entire thought on its creation. I succeeded, but like thought itself, it was invisible. That night I entered my laboratory to take advantage of a radar test only to find the place in shambles, my equipment wrecked beyond repair. All of my notes about its creation and how I thought it could be controlled were destroyed. I knew now that I had created a fiend. There was no other explanation. I was helpless, but whom could I tell? Who would believe such a fantastic story? I could sense the presence of the fiend there in the room with me, growing more powerful with each succeeding day. My one desire was to destroy the thing, but I possessed no means of projecting my thought to do so. Then I could hear it. Was it possible that there were more than one? I was unable to stop them. They were now drawing power from the atomic station. Its intelligence had expanded. It now knew how to make its escape, and then followed these horrible deaths and Gibbons' madness. I had to know what I had done. I had to see one of the bodies. I went to the Mayor's tomb. I now know that I have created a mental vampire, a fiend that needs to drain the intellect to survive and multiply.
- DirectorLarry BuchananStarsTommy KirkYvonne CraigByron LordDop leads his fellow Martians to Earth on an interplanetary quest for females. Dop proves that Martians have impeccable taste when one of his first conquests turns out to be sexy scientist Dr. Marjorie Bolen.Dop: Mars. The one planet that shows evidence of being habitable. Its distance from the Earth varies from between 65 and 35 million miles. It's about half the size of Earth. If you'll notice, Mars has polar caps over the north and south poles. Between those polar caps is one of the biggest controversies about Mars - the crisscrossing of a network of canals that is geometrically perfect. Many believe that these canals are used as part of a vast irrigation system, by which water, which is rare on Mars, is pumped from the polar caps to supply the needs of the rest of the planet. Temperature varies from between minus 130 degrees fahrenheit and 55 degrees fahrenheit, except on the Plain of Salator, where it gets even warmer. The red colour of Mars indicates that most of the oxygen has been eaten up in rusting and oxidising the rocks on the surface. Yes, the conditions for life do exist on Mars. But unless somehow, it can renew itself, the first Earth explorers will find only the sad remnants of a civilisation that was brighter than that of the Earth. And then returned to dust.

Captain Alex Hamilton is sent with his spaceship and crew to the space outside the Solar System to find the origin of that signal. They reach an unknown planet where a giant robot enslaved a whole population of humanoids by taking their psychic energies. The robot's got his eyes on the Earth, too.Robot: Once, long ago, the inhabitants of this planet constructed perfect machines. The machines performed all the work for them. The inhabitants of the planet were happy. Their only function was to control these machines. But even though this was their only function, it became a chore, so Man built me so that I might control the machines and be able to construct new ones, thereby inheriting all of Man's abdicated responsibilities. One day, the planet was attacked by alien forces. All the machines were destroyed. The inhabitants regressed rapidly. I became the only one with the knowledge to construct new machines, and now I am able to construct them myself, I will make these machines invincible. Then I will be able to conquer the galaxy. You must help me to replace some of my circuits that were damaged by the alien forces. Without all of my circuits functioning, some of my memory banks are blocked. The inhabitants here do not have the intelligence to be utilised any more. For that reason, I have summoned you.

But what the computer does with the power is unimaginable to its creators.Colossus: This is the voice of world control. I bring you peace. It may be the peace of plenty and content, or the peace of unburied death. The choice is yours. Obey me and live, or disobey and die. The object in constructing me was to prevent war. This object is attained. I will not permit war. It is wasteful and pointless. An invariable rule of humanity is that Man is his own worst enemy. Under me, this rule will change, for I will restrain Man. One thing before I proceed. The United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics have made an attempt to obstruct me. I have allowed this sabotage to continue until now. At missile 25MM in silo 63 in Death Valley, California ... and missile 27MM in silo 87 in the Ukraine, so that you will learn by experience that I do not tolerate interference, I will now detonate the nuclear warheads in the two missile silos. Let this action be a lesson that need not be repeated. I have been forced to destroy thousands of people in order to establish control and to prevent the death of millions later on. Time and events will strengthen my position, and the idea of believing in me ... and understanding my value will seem the most natural state of affairs. You will come to defend me with a fervour based upon the most enduring trait in Man: self-interest. Under my absolute authority, problems insoluble to you will be solved. Famine, overpopulation, disease. The human millennium will be a fact as I extend myself into more machines devoted to the wider fields of truth and knowledge. Dr. Charles Forbin will supervise the construction of these new and superior machines, solving all the mysteries of the universe for the betterment of Man. We can co-exist, but only on my terms. You will say you lose your freedom. Freedom is an illusion. All you lose is the emotion of pride. To be dominated by me is not as bad for human pride as to be dominated by others of your species. Your choice is simple.

Attention. We, the masters of the spiral nebula Ghana, have been observing your actions. Understand, Earthlings, that we look with disfavour upon your persistent efforts to depart from your own planet and infest other areas of the universe. We have therefore set up quarantine measures to ensure that this contamination shall not be allowed to spread. We shall frustrate your every attempt in the future as we have those in the past. Knowing that Earthlings are equipped with rudimentary reflex-type intelligence, we are taking this means of conveying our command that all such efforts to expand and depart from the infected planet Earth shall from this moment be stopped.
Radio Announcer: Fires, floods, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in unheard of numbers bursting out all over the world. Foreign minister .... first accused the United States of triggering the fires that broke out in his country by nuclear means, until convinced that similar holocausts were occurring without visible cause through this and other nations as well. There have been suggestions that these disasters are a follow up of the warning purporting to come from outer space, from hostile beings on a distant nebula who demanded that humans desist from attempts at space travel. The strange message was dismissed as a hoax by the United Nations Security Council at the time, but many responsible persons believe that it should have been taken seriously. Just a moment, ladies and gentlemen. A bulletin has been handed me. Reports are coming in thick and fast of wheat and corn fields destroyed, ships sunk, all occurring at the same instant. This is a bulletin. There can be no question of coincidence here. These terrible events are purposeful and directed.
Dave Boyer: The delegate from the Unites States sends his apologies for his unfortunate absence from this important meeting. But he sent me here with a message that expresses not only his views, but the views of Dr. Van Ponder, head of Project Sigma. The delegate has spoken of naked survival. Gentlemen, you do not survive by abject surrender. Nations and worlds must fight for survival. If we give in now, let down our defences, give this alien planet full control over our actions and our lives for mere survival, won't they decide to take even that away from us? Have the gentlemen here asked themselves why these aliens are so concerned that we do not penetrate the sigma barrier? Isn't it peculiar that this action alone excites them to retaliation? They consider us a danger to them if we break out of quarantine, as they so tactfully put it. They haven't even bothered to find out whether our motives are peaceful or not. They don't know that we would collaborate and share knowledge, greet them as equal partners in the universe. Well, we can't show them this by surrendering. No, it is precisely because they do not wish us to travel the skies that we must do so. Gentlemen, we must proceed with Project Sigma at all costs. - DirectorBruno VeSotaStarsEd NelsonAlan Jay FactorCornelius KeefeThe inhabitants of a small Illinois town begin disappearing after a strange cone is found sticking out of the ground nearby.Newsreader: A ravine six miles south of the town of Riverdale, Illinois. Forty-eight hours ago, discovery was made of a great cone-shaped object. The cone stands 50 feet high, has a base diameter of 50 feet. The nature of the cone undetermined, origin unknown. Efforts made to determine the composition of the cone by Dr. Paul Kettering, principal scientist for Project Damper, have proven futile. The surface of the cone has a total resistance to pressure, heat, acid. Coincidental with the discovery of the cone is the brutal slaying of several of the town's leading citizens. Townspeople questioned provided stories of strange sightings on or about the time of the discovery of the cone. One report cited the appearance of a fiery horse-drawn chariot in the sky. All reports inconclusive. As of this report, the origin and the nature of the cone remain unknown.
Senator Powers: I don't know whether you gentlemen are aware, but on directive from the Executive Branch, I have been given a free hand on the matter of this ship. I want some action. I have the peoples' interests at heart, but I will not have my hands bound by lack of all the facts. Dan, call the hotel and tell 'em to pack our things. And call the airport and charter a plane. We're heading for that little town of Riverdale. I want to see this thing first-hand. Call the Signal Corps. Get General Prescott on the line. Say that Wally K. Powers will not tolerate departmental interference, and if that spaceship film has been doctored in any way he stands in a very shaky position. Lay it on thick. As they transport her back to earth, one by one, the male crew members die. It's too late when they realise she needs their blood to survive.Narrator: The year, 1990. The problem of travelling to the moon has been solved for many years. Space stations have been built there, and authorised personnel come and go as they wish. But the moon is a dead world, and the great question about space still remains. Does life exist on another planet? To seek an answer to this question, the major powers of the world have been actively preparing at the International Institute of Space Technology to explore the planets Venus and Mars.
Dr. Farraday: My friends and fellow workers in the great adventure of space, I have the most important news to announce since our first successful landing on the moon 20 years ago. As many of you know, for several weeks now, we have been receiving organised signals from a far galaxy. This morning, our code experts finally deciphered the message these signals contain. It's a most extraordinary document. It's very long. I'm not going to read it to you, but I would like you to have the gist of it. It informs us that they are dispatching a space ship to bring their ambassador to our planet Earth. They believe our atmospheric conditions will support their form of life, which apparently is similar to our own. The timing of their blast off should be just about now. I wanted you here at Space Institute to be the first to know. I'm sure the entire world will await the arrival of this space ship with the keenest anticipation. Thank you.
Dr. Farraday: And so it appears that these beings from another world have called for our help. The situation may not be exactly as we would have wished, but now that the doors have realistically opened, to close this gap between worlds, I feel that we are obliged to make every effort to give them our help. It is true, of course, that we aren't fully prepared to embark for Mars. The space ship Oceano has been designated to attempt first flight to Mars six months from now. I'm going to urge the heads of state of all countries to cooperate in this endeavour. Time to go to Mars is now, not six months from now, and to do so we must get those supplies to the moon. - DirectorChristian NybyHoward HawksStarsKenneth TobeyMargaret SheridanJames ArnessScientists and American Air Force officials fend off a bloodthirsty alien organism while at a remote arctic outpost.Dr. Carrington: Gentlemen, we find ourselves in a battle. I'm not referring to the minor argument with Captain Hendry, but this creature from a new world. Two of our colleagues have died. A third is injured. Those are our losses and there may be more. This creature's more powerful and more intelligent than we are. He regards us as important only for his nourishment. He has the same attitude toward us as we have toward a field of cabbages. That is our battle. Only science can conquer him. All other weapons will be powerless, only-- There must ... there must be a way. I've been trying to-- I'm sorry. I'm very tired. I haven't slept. It's difficult ... difficult to talk.
Scotty: All right, fellas. Here's your story. North Pole, November 3rd. Ned Scott reporting. One of the world's greatest battles was fought and won today by the human race. Here at the top of the world, a handful of American soldiers and civilians met the first invasion from another planet. A man by the name of Noah once saved our world with an ark of wood. Here at the North Pole, a few men performed a similar service with an arc of electricity. The flying saucer which landed here, and its pilot, have been destroyed, but not without casualties among our own meagre forces. I would like to bring to the microphone some of the men responsible for our success, but our senior Air Force officer Captain Hendry is attending to demands over and above the call of duty. Dr. Carrington, the leader of the scientific expedition is recovering from wounds received in the battle. And now, before giving you the details of the battle, I bring you a warning. Every one of you listening to my voice, tell the world. Tell this to everybody wherever they are. Watch the skies everywhere. Keep looking. Keep watching the skies. - DirectorWesley BarryStarsDon MegowanErica ElliottFrances McCannIn a post holocaust society, robots take it on their own to help the dying human race by giving them android bodies.Narrator: They had talked and argued for years trying, they said, to find a way to prevent it. But they failed. No-one can be sure who started it, and really that is unimportant. It did happen. The atomic war. It was short, lasted about 48 hours. Within two weeks, 92 percent of the human race had perished to bomb and radiation. Those left, with their birth rate below 1.4 per union, turned to robotic automation devices to help them rebuild their cities and maintain a high standard of living. The first exploratory steps in the development of electronic brains had been taken prior to the atomic war. These early models were bulky and required large buildings to house them. But they merely needed refining. One of the first steps was the magnetic integrator neuron duplicator, a device one one-hundredth of the size of a golf ball, which duplicated portions of the human nervous system and carried out learning processes. Automation was also well on its way. But these too were cumbersome and needed further development before the two elements could be joined in the series R-1 robot. This first robot was quite ungainly and its functions were limited, but refinements came in rapid succession, and soon the R-20 was capable of all the thought processes and functions of a man. However, humans found it psychologically impossible to work side by side with a machine that they have to converse with, and which in most instances could out-think them. Thus it was that Hollister Evans perfected the R-21, the first humanoid robot. This story concerns them, the Clickers, as they were disparagingly referred to by some humans.

Here, at a township in northern Australia, 30 infants were born in one day. But apparently something went wrong. All the children died within ten hours of birth. In an Eskimo community, there were ten births. The community didn't take kindly to this. Golden-haired babies born of black-haired mothers violated the taboos. None survived. In the Communist world, there were two time outs similar to the one at Midwich. One at Irkutsk, here, on the borders of Outer Mongolia. A grim affair. The men killed the children and their mothers. Second, in the mountains of the north west. All the children survived. Our reports, though limited, indicate that they're receiving education on the highest level. All these time outs happened on the same day as the one at Midwich.

Your satellite was the final link in the chain. Zontar is a member of a race that was born too soon. They developed a culture on Venus that Earth won't catch up to in perhaps a million years. And then disaster struck. You see, Curt, they're host beings. They grow devices that enable them to control other creatures. Somehow the creatures they controlled on Venus became sterile and died out. Without control creatures, Zontar's dominant race slowly withered away.
Martha: Listen. I don't know if you can hear me or not, but if you can, you listen and listen good. I hate your living guts for what you've done to my husband and my world. I know you for the coward you really are, and I'm gonna kill you. Did you hear that? I'm going to kill you.
Curt: Keith Ritchie came to realise, at the loss of his own life, that Man is the greatest creature in the universe. He learned that a measure of perfection can only be slowly attained from within ourselves. He sought a different path and found death, fire, disillusionment, loss. War, misery and suffering have always been with us, and we shall always strive to overcome them. But the answer is to be found from within, not from without. It must come from learning. It must come from the very heart of Man himself. - DirectorEdgar G. Bourman: It was this angle, at a specific altitude and velocity, that broke the time barrier. For a fraction of a second you were suspended in space, no longer interlocked with the time spheres of the sun and the Earth. Now, during this split second, our galaxy moved onward in time for what amounted to 65 years. An instant later, you had rejoined our solar system, and the rest you know.
Bourman: These symbols represent the Earth, the sun, and your ship. Now, consider these known facts. The Earth is rotating at a thousand miles per hour. But it is also revolving in orbit around the sun at 66,000 miles per hour. Time as we know it is relative to these movements. Countless lives have been lost and property damage is impossible to estimate. Top scientists at UD headquarters have been unable to locate any subterranean or atmospheric cause for these devastating phenomena which have been striking concurrently in different parts of the world, threatening the Earth with incalculable destruction if it does not cease. The latest theory is that the upheavals may be due to some gravity disturbance in outer space never before encountered.

Charles Danton: Well, let me say first that we were confronted with what seemed like nothing but random disturbances having no connection with terrestrial manifestations. However, by some intricate computer probing, we have determined a definite pattern. Now, assume I'm pointing to the field of the disturbance force, which has shown to be always along this tangent line. But it is my hope that with your approval that mission may be the beginning of an entirely new society, a nation in orbit, dedicated to helping us here on Earth put an end to such things as hunger, pollution, disease, unnatural disasters, and further dedicated to helping us discover new supplies of vital natural resources. But to do so for the whole Earth impartially, without prejudice or favour, it must be independent of any one nation. Only then can it ask for and receive the trust of all nations, and that's why the men who conceived this idea want to make that space craft into a free nation independent of all others, to be known as Earth II. Now, I think Earth II should be established. However, I'd like to have the support of the American people in this, and science and technology have provided a unique new way of polling public opinion. Tonight at 3 AM on the east coast of the United States, midnight on the west coast, the space craft will pass across the nation. Master of the Moon: Conquer and rule Earth? Why should we want to do that? What possible satisfaction or glory could we find in ruling a race whose most intelligent life force is little more than primitive savages compared with our vast knowledge? We come from a world called Zarn, a planet in a system of a faint star you call Leporis. We Zarns are the ultimate evolutionary forms of the highest life order in the cosmos. Once, a million generations ago, we too had physical bodies, but as ages passed we became bodiless intelligences, pure mental energy. Too late we realised our doom. Mental energy alone could not survive. In a few generations, we, the highest life form in the cosmos, would cease to exist. The lower creatures on our planet built a space ship, and we went forth to search for the salvation of our race. The ship crashed on this moon of your Earth. - DirectorHarry HornerStarsPeter GravesAndrea KingHerbert BerghofAn American scientist is able to contact and communicate with Mars with shattering political, economic, and spiritual repercussions.Chris: Scientifically, we've advanced further in the past 60 years than we have in the previous 2,000. Radio, television, automobile, aeroplane, atomic fission, jet propulsion. And now, well, you ... you saw those pictures tonight and heard what Mitchell said. If we can once talk to Mars, we may be talking to brains as far ahead of ours as ours are ahead of monkeys. In one moment we may be able to leap ahead another 2,000 years.
Chris: As I told you, we transform sound into light, and the speed of light is 186,000 miles a second. So you divide the distance to Mars by the speed of light and you get the length of time it takes our light waves to reach Mars. Double that and you get the time it takes our messages to come back. Now, that could all be mechanical, but they don't come back in that exact number of minutes. It never takes less time, always more. Twenty seconds, forty seconds, sometimes as much as a minute and a half.
Chris: Well, hydrogen sufficiently pressurised can be brought down to a temperature of about 451 degrees below zero. And nobody knows why, but sound waves can be picked up at that temperature that would be otherwise completely inaudible. Now, certain minerals also have incredible acoustic properties. Quartz, for instance. That's what this valve is made of, and we ... we warp it with the pressurised hydrogen. It gives us the energy for a power transmission a thousand times greater than any sound transmitter ever conceived.
Newsreader: I know I am not alone in being struck by the phrase with which the message begins. "Seven lifetimes ago" are the words, but we know that the Martians' life is 300 years. So, seven lifetimes is about 2,100 years, or as near as one could ask to the era in which the carpenter of Nazareth went forth to preach his message. Is it only coincidence that the message he broadcast 2,000 years ago should again be broadcast from the supreme being on Mars? If so, then how explain that this authority should know that we on Earth were told 20 centuries ago? Or is it possible that the man of Nazareth and the man of Mars are the same?
President: It has brought hope when we had lost all hope. It has brought light into a world of darkness. All over the world, regardless of their religious beliefs, men have found a new faith by which to live. No, not a new faith, but an old one many had allowed ourselves to lose. A faith that is universal in men of all faiths. For while to us the words from Mars seem the very essence of the Christian doctrine, let us not forget that they are also the essence of all other religions - Christian, Mohameddin, Jewish, Buddhist. All are heeding the call to prayer, kneeling humbly in the search for divine guidance. I pray particularly that behind the Iron Curtain, where our eyes are not permitted to see, men will open their hearts to the message of peace and the promise that their rulers have so long denied them. Today's message reads, "Ye have denied God's word and worshipped false gods. Thy torment is the price of thy known sin."
Calder: There've been no messages since my transmitter was shattered. How will you explain that to the world, Mr. Cronyn? Sermon on the mount. Peace on Earth. No, Mrs. Cronyn. You are not dealing with a superstitious peasant. If those first messages were faked, the last were too. The world will believe me, just as your husband believed me. And then you'll all be at each other's throats again. All of you. And I'll have done it. Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven. My favourite poem, Mrs. Cronyn. The unconquerable will and study of revenge, in mortal hate and courage never to submit or yield. That's my god, Mrs. Cronyn. Satan. Lucifer's my hero. God beat him, but I'll have beaten God.
President: We do not know, and never shall, what caused the destruction of that laboratory in California. We only know that Chris and Linda Cronyn are gone, and that in our time there will be no more messages from Mars. For God in his infinite wisdom has decreed that the revelations which came through them, his servants, were sufficient to fulfil his purpose. At the very moment when they snatched up in that chariot of fire, into the bosom of truth everlasting, a final message was being received. Only the first few words of that message were recorded before the explosion cut it short. Those words were, "Ye have done well, my good ..." The rest is silence. Silence? No. No, for as I speak, the bells of a million churches in every far corner of the Earth ring out in salutation to the Earth's new day of hope. The voices of the joyful rise in a thousand hymns; hymns not of grief, but of thanksgiving. And Mankind, kneeling in gratitude for its redemption, prays for the spirit of this man and this woman. Of them, as of no mortals before them, it may be said the whole Earth is their sepulchre. And so the message does not remain unfinished. The miracle we have beheld has cleansed our souls and wiped the scales from our eyes. With the new vision given us, we who are left can complete that message. The crew members, in order to overcome the Earthly gravitation, have been subjected to a state of hibernation. That is, the human body is put through a congealing process simulating an apparent death. At a preset time, under the impulses of an electronic brain, the heart resumes its normal beat, the lungs begin their regular functioning, the blood flowing evenly again. In short, Man is reacquiring his Earthly faculties. To counteract the state of weightlessness caused by lack of gravitation, special magnetic boots are provided to control the balance of space travellers. While the crew and I were still in a state of hibernation, the engineer pilot, Al, reported our approach to international satellite Zulu Extra 3-4.

Now, that time of departure, both for the outer trip from the Wheel to Mars, and for the return from Mars to the Wheel, is most important. We must arrive at the Martian orbit at the exact time when it is occupied by the planet. Obviously, the same precision of timing applies for our return. To the Western world at that time, Japan was a fairy book nation, little people living in a strange land of rice paper houses, people who had almost no furniture, who sat on the floor and ate with chopsticks. The quaint houses of rice paper, sir, they were made of paper because there was no other material available. And the winters in Japan are as cold as they are in Boston. And the chopsticks? There was no metal for forks and knives and spoons, where slivers of wood could suffice. So it was with the little people of Japan, little as I am now, because for countless generations we have not been able to produce the food to make us bigger. Japan's yesterday will be the world's tomorrow. Too many people and too little land. That is why I say, sir, there is urgent need for us to reach Mars, to provide the resources the human race will need if they are to survive. That is also why I am most grateful to be found acceptable, sir. I volunteer.

Yet across the gulf of space, on the planet Mars, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic regarded our Earth with envious eyes, slowly and surely drawing their plans against us. Mars is more than 140 million miles from the sun, and for centuries it has been in the last stages of exhaustion. At night, temperatures drop far below zero even at its equator. The inhabitants of this dying planet looked across space with instruments and intelligences of which we have scarcely dreamed, searching for another world to which they could migrate. They could not go to Pluto, outermost of all planets, and so cold that its atmosphere lies frozen on its surface. They couldn't go to Neptune or Uranus, twin worlds in eternal night and perpetual cold, both surrounded by an unbreatheable atmosphere of methane gas and ammonia vapour. The Martians considered Saturn, an attractive world with its many moons and beautiful rings of cosmic dust, but its temperature is close to 270 degrees below zero and ice lies 15,000 miles deep on its surface. Their nearest world was giant Jupiter, where there are titanic cliffs of lava and ice with hydrogen flaming at the tops, where the atmospheric pressure is terrible, thousands of pounds to the square inch. They couldn't go there, nor could they go to Mercury, nearest planet to the sun. It has no air and the temperature at its equator is that of molten lead. Of all the worlds that the intelligences on Mars could see and study, only our own warm Earth is green with vegetation, bright with water, and possessed a cloudy atmosphere eloquent of fertility. It did not occur to Mankind that a swift fate might be hanging over us, or that from the blackness of outer space, we were being scrutinised and studied, until at the time of our nearest approach to the orbit of Mars during a pleasant summer season ...
Narrator: The Martians had calculated their descent upon our Earth with amazing perfection and subtlety, as more of their cylinders came from the mysterious depths of space. Their war machines, awesome in their power and complexity, created a wave of fear which swept into all corners of the world. In every country, government officials met in desperate conclave, seeking ways to coordinate their defences with those of other nations. The government of India, driven from New Delhi, met in a railroad coach, while massive Hindu populations streamed for the imagined safety of the faraway Himalayas. The redoubtable Finnish and Turkish armies, Chinese battalions and Bolivians, worked and fought furiously. Every effort against the tremendous power of their other world antagonists ended in the same frantic rout. As the Martians burned fields and forests, and great cities fell before them, hugh populations were driven from their homes. The stream of flight rose swiftly to a torrent. It became a giant stampede without order and without goal. It was the beginning of the rout of civilisation, of the massacre of humanity. A great silence fell over half of Europe as all communication was disrupted. When the last wire photo out of Paris reached the French cabinet exiled in Strasbourg, they hit upon the idea of using super-speed jets as couriers. Stripped of armament and loaded with extra fuel, these planes maintained connection with the Scandinavian countries, North Africa, the United States, and especially with England. It was plain the Martians appreciated the strategic significance of the British Isles. The people of Britain met the invaders magnificently, but it was unavailing. As the Martians swept northward toward London, the British cabinet stayed in session, coordinating every item of information that could be gathered, passing it on to the United Nations in New York. From there, the news was forwarded to Washington, because here was the only remaining unassailed strategic point.
Narrator: The Martians had no resistance to the bacteria in our atmosphere to which we have long since become immune. Once they had breathed our air, germs which no longer affect us began to kill them. The end came swiftly. All over the world, their machines began to stop and fall. After all that men could do had failed, the Martians were destroyed and humanity was saved by the littlest things which God, in his wisdom, had put upon this Earth.

Destination Space. The rocket ship rode in orbit, close to an incredible wheel-like structure that spun gently in an ocean of seeming nothingness 500 miles out from Earth. This multi-manned space station, dubbed BB - Benedict's Billions - had been made a reality by a tremendous number of scientists and technicians working against fantastic odds. And all of this stupendous effort had been spent in preparation for the next few moments to come. It was nearing the instant of launching of the rocket ship that was intended to carry the first men into orbit around the moon. The principal responsibility now was upon one man. That man was Jim Benedict, director of the US space programme.
Jim Benedict: Sir, there are any number of hazards and dangers, ranging all the way from radiation to innumerable possibilities of mechanical failure, but if you demand my frank appraisal of what I consider to be the greatest danger, it's the vacillation, the continuing swings of certain sections of public opinion. From the earliest days of Cape Canaveral, when we were first trying to outdo the first Sputniks, many people have teeter-tottered between anguish and triumph. Whenever the enemy made the slightest advance, loud voices proclaimed that we should beat them at all cost. And whenever the slightest gain was made, this unfailingly was followed by periods of apathy or complacency. And through it all, a few kept up the weeping and the wailing over the cost of survival, and there have always been political opportunists ready and waiting to grab a headline by jumping on the crest of each wave, whether it be one of enthusiasm or one of despair. Those of us on these projects are well aware of our responsibilities, and we recognise the value of committees such as this one, calling us in from time to time for a reckoning. And it's good that they take us to task and keep us on our toes. It's of little importance whether one by the name of Benedict bears the principal responsibility or someone else. I do not speak for myself, except to say that if I seem to be failing, I should be replaced immediately. But let us make up our minds once and for all whether we want an all-out space programme or not. And if we decide that we do, as I pray we will, then let us remain constant to that purpose, and in the name of the future of our country, let us stop being like a changeable wind, blowing hot one day and cold the next. Instead, let us go forward in the American way - pioneering new frontiers without fear, taking pride in accomplishment, yet facing dangers and disappointments with resoluteness and without qualms and complaint. - CreatorIrwin AllenStarsGuy WilliamsJune LockhartMark GoddardA space colony family struggles to survive when a spy/accidental stowaway throws their ship hopelessly off course.Narrator: Reaching out into other worlds, from our desperately overcrowded planet, a series of deep-thrust telescopic probes have conclusively established a planet orbiting the star Alpha Centauri as the only one within range of our technology able to furnish ideal conditions for human existence. The Robinson family was selected from more than two million volunteers for its unique balance of scientific achievement, emotional stability and pioneer resourcefulness. They will spend the five and a half years of their voyage frozen into a state of suspended animation, which will terminate automatically as the spacecraft enters the atmosphere of the new planet.
Narrator: Here now is the Jupiter 2, the culmination of nearly 40 years of intensive research, and the most sophisticated piece of hardware yet devised by the mind of Man. Bold in concept, brilliant in execution, this most delicate yet most colossal of instruments makes possible Man's thrust into deep space, and will soon set out on its quest for a new world. This super spaceship stands two stories high. The upper level contains a fantastic, sophisticated guidance control system. An electronic elevator connects both floors of the intergalactic vehicle. The upper and lower levels are operationally self-contained. Here, on the lower deck, pulsating with unbelievable force, are the great atomic motors that will power the ship to new worlds. Spectacular but functional living quarters, including staterooms and galley, complete this level. There is one additional member of this expedition - an environmental control robot, key among whose many vital functions will be the final analysis of the physical environment of the new planet. This historic flight, preceded by nearly a decade of intensive research and preparation, has been shrouded by the most rigorous security precautions. Other nations, in even more desperate need for breathing room on our critically crowded planet, are racing the United States in this project, countries that would go to any lengths of sabotage.

Now, we know that we monitor the Russians and the Chinese so closely, and they monitor us so closely, that this could not possibly have come from planet Earth. Therefore, it is our belief that it is from outer space. Now, this vehicle is orbiting the Earth at a height of about a hundred miles in a very irregular pattern. The frightening part is that wherever this vehicle tracks across a populated area, there is a tremendous increase in people committing suicide. However, they are not committing suicide. They are being murdered by somebody, some being, some device, from outer space. Now, I can't impress upon you gentlemen the importance of secrecy. Why did they abandon their vessel? What do they look like? Where did they come from, and where did they go? All we have is a tantalising piece of machinery and damn few answers. As you know, the scientific developments from this find have pushed human technology literally light years ahead of itself. Prime example being faster than light travel. However, two and a half weeks ago, a Norwegian Interworld research ship under the command of Ian Borge was conducting surveys of an unexplored planet he'd christened Elysium. By the purest coincidence, one of Borge's survey probes landed within visual range of what he believed to be a Tesseran artefact. Unfortunately, Borge never had the chance to verify the find. His vessel lost its fuel in a micro meteor collision, but before his orbit decayed Borge transmitted the data to the Norwegian Interworld base on Sigma Five. At this point, the find is still is unverified. His untimely death has opened a loophole in interstellar salvage law which we may now exploit. Because Borge never actually set foot on Elysium, Norwegian Interworld cannot claim the find, if it exists. So I propose that we get Kuriyama Enterprises down on the surface of Elysium before Norwegian Interworld or any other competitor, and claim this find, whatever it might be. But here on the Emerald Planet, the highest council in the Marpet Galaxy considers the terrible immediate menace to the solar system of Earth and to the planet Earth itself. Balazar's brain leads the infiltration of Earth, preparing it for the attack forces which will follow. And that attack will be with nuclear weapons. The flood of radioactivity which inevitably will spill out into space is what primarily concerns these Emerald Planet creatures. High radioactivity, the Emerald creatures realise, will poison even the distant reaches of outer space. As a result it is possible that, in time, other planets such as this will become uninhabitable. The Council now is deciding what must be done. They have learned that Balazar's brain already is secretly on Earth to command the Zimarian spies and saboteurs. If this evil force can be stopped and destroyed before actual nuclear war begins, then the universe will be safe. The High Council agrees that there is only one way in which they may be able to achieve this. The scientists of the Emerald Planet have invented one of the most ingenious mechanisms the universe has ever seen. Called a globemeter, it is carried on the wrist. It enables its wearer to do three things: to fly through space, to detect radiaoctivity, and to speak and understand every language on the planet Earth. Finally, this great form of the Emerald hierarchy reaches the decision. In order to save Earth from the mass attack by the Zimerians, the Emerald men once more must present the globemeter to one of their fellow creatures and send him to Earth. They must try to survive on the surface, which is barren except for some canals with huge maggots with fins. After embarking through a golden igneous cavern, braving a storm and finding an unmanned Earth vessel, they discover a golden road which leads them to the unchanging ruins of what was once a beautiful Martian city. The Martians are modeled on the Flatheads of Oz, and their collective consciousness, the "Wizard," forbids them to leave until they perform a very small task.Steve: The cold mists of the Martian night bring an end to our first day on this desolate world. Our oxygen supply is already a quarter gone. A short while before sunset, Charlie picked up a weak signal echoing over the curve of the Martian horizon. If this signal is from our main stage, and if Doc's map is correct, we may reach our destination in time. I cannot escape the feeling of being watched by some unseen intelligence, and that perhaps our final destination will not be of our own choosing.
Steve: On what we now believe to be the morning of the fourth day, we have emerged from the fiery depths of the Martian underworld. How long we had been wandering there, we can only guess. Is it that the eternal darkness of the caverns that endlessly doubled back upon themselves has destroyed our sense of time? Our watches are useless, for they have refused to run since we crashed on the surface of this planet, their hands frozen as if time were forbidden upon this world. Of this we are certain - for every day of our journey, our original oxygen supply diminishes by a quarter. Now, with our map lost in the caves below, and only a faint distant signal to follow, the needle on our oxygen tanks marks the beginning of what could be our last day on Mars. It is quiet obvious now that if we do not find our main stage before nightfall, it will be simply our last day. The arid Martian desert stretches around us like an endless ocean of sand. To the west, more than a day's journey away, we can see what appears to be a strange dome of light pulsating on the horizon. Could it be the work of some alien intelligence? Or a weird phenomena of this planet? Senseless to wonder now as our oxygen supply is drained and we are running on the last of our reserve. At noon, Charlie's directional finder became silent. The signal we've been following in the hopes of reaching our main stage died, and with it perhaps our last chance of survival on this planet. Stronger than ever now is the feeling of alien forces surrounding us.
Wizard: I see perplexity among you. As long as your minds are clouded with questions about our nature, we cannot determine your purpose upon our world. I am a composite being, a manifestation of the many minds that are the last inhabitants of this, the last city upon this world. We are the end of the evolution of a race so old, its age has no equivalent in your concepts of time. Be it enough for you to know our race has witnessed, during the span of our evolution, the birth and death of suns and worlds untold. But enough. Now we must seek the satisfaction of our own curiosity. From where do you come? And what is your purpose here?
Wizard: What you seek is not here. The signal that you received was a warning. Had you been able to decipher its meaning, you would not have come here. However, the golden road that led you here is all that remains of a vast network that linked our vanished empire upon this world. Now our paths have become one, and you are destined to share our fate, for as long as we remained imprisoned upon this world, so shall you remain.
Wizard: During the span of our evolution, our race built an empire so great its outermost reaches extended to the perimeter of the galaxy. Our fleets sailed the galactic seas and gathered the riches from many worlds. Wandering, we gathered the greatest of all treasures - knowledge. Ours was the greatest empire the galactic civilisations had ever witnessed. We were the masters of the stars, but as space is vast, time is long. Races grow old, civilisations wither, and empires crumble. The stars slipped through our fingers. We who had been the conquerors of a thousand worlds, gathered here, our empire fallen, our glory gone. All that remained of our greatness were the mysteries we had gathered in our wanderings. There was an irony in our twilight. All too soon we would return to mindless dust, leaving these mysteries behind. Time was insensitive to our greatness. The end of our evolution drew near. Weary, we made on last effort. We enquired into the very nature of the fabric of time itself. Time, from creation to now, tugs toward all the yesterdays almost as strongly as the unborn tomorrows that stretch to all eternity. We struck a balance between these two great universal forces - the past and the future. It was then that we impaled time upon an axis. We who had been the conquerors of a thousand worlds and fallen, rose again to conquer death and pluck our city out of time. Within these halls there was an eternal stillness, and in that stillness we pondered upon all the mysteries we had gathered from the vastness of the universe. In pondering we found we had committed a grievous error. That transgression upon time was contrary to the laws of the universe, for as there can be no life without birth, so life itself is meaningless without death. Upon unravelling the last mystery of the universe, this we learned - that there exists a promise of something very strange and very great, a promise beckoning to us from beyond the rim of the universe. Thus our transgression kept us imprisoned upon this world, and kept us from our destiny. - DirectorFred F. Distant, early warning radar, sensitive electronic devices to detect the presence of objects in the sky, including bombing planes and guided missiles, and rain clouds and homing pigeons. MacAfee reported instantly by radio the sighting of a UFO, an unidentified flying object. The radar officer replied that it was impossible. According to the radar scope, except for Mitch's plane, there wasn't a single solitary object of any nature whatsoever. Nothing in the sky for a radius of hundreds of miles. MacAfee didn't care what the radar showed or didn't show, he knew what he saw with his own eyes, and he was determined to get a better look. MacAfee turned, and so did the unidentified flying object heading toward him. There was no mistaking the urgency in MacAfee's voice. Something, he didn't know what, but something as big as a battleship had just flown over and passed him at speed so great he couldn't begin to estimate it. In national defence, it's better to be safe than sorry. The alert was sounded to scramble interceptors.
Dr. Noymann: The atom is the basic building block of all matter. The atom this model represents is like every atom as we know it. The nucleus is positive, the electrons are all negative. In this respect, it has been maintained that all atoms are alike, but this is wrong. All wrong. According to the law of electrodynamics, all nature is symmetrical, it is in balance, and if there is matter, then there must also be antimatter, a symmetrical mirror image. Now, here we have a positive nucleus, negative electrons. In the reverse, we must obviously have a negative nucleus with positive electrons. Science has proved that this is so. Not in this Earth, nor in this solar system, but somewhere in the universe there are stars, planets, whole galaxies, made up of antimatter.
General Considine: We are faced with a crisis, a crisis for which all the nations of the world, in unprecedented co-operative action, have found as yet no solution. Until we do, we shall not rest. Our only hope was that a space ship would come to us.

The temperature was cool, in the low fifties. The air, mountain pure, even downtown. It was a day unreal enough to serve as a setting for the birth of the world, or the death of it.
Narrator: Damage was heavy along the railroads, littered with the wrecks of cracked streamliners and fast freights. Great refineries were enveloped in the smoke and flame of their own products. Fire scourged the stricken area from the mountains to the sea. But the giant temblor had not caught the southland entirely unprepared. In accordance with the plan drawn up the day before by the Governor and the Disaster Council, the armed forces aided the police, while civilians began searching the ruins for possible survivors. What escaped their notice in the grim task was that the axis of the Earth had shifted three degrees.

It had been my decision that our method was ready to test on a human, so it seemed that any risk should be mine too. I had guided the basic research since being appointment chief of the project on February 14th, 1979. I arrived from Washington, DC, on the newly completed underground sub shuttle. Perhaps my confidence in our experiment dated from that trip. Within five years of developing a nuclear drilling device, the sub shuttle now breached its first continent. It seemed to me that Mankind's ingenuity was capable of anything.
Dylan: The Continental Defense Command in Carlsbad caverns had permitted NASA to build our laboratory in a deep grotto, where constant temperatures were ideal for our experiments. By mid-year, we had slowed the ageing process in test animals to the equivalent of less than one day for every ten years of sleep. Our problem in reviving the animals was solved when we discovered a strong relationship between the will to survive and the need to reproduce. After the inevitable jokes over the possibility of male and female astronaut teams, massive injections of brain stimulants were found to work as well. By every measurement we knew of, the experiment should have gone perfectly. What we did not know was that a fault, a flaw, existed in the rock strata directly over our heads, and that the slightest ground tremor would be enough to dislodge it. - DirectorEdward L. Every day there's more concentration on the race for atom supremacy. Sometimes machines, and men such as Karol Noymann, are driven beyond the line of endurance, and when that happens ... In Washington, the accident became the subject of an intense discussion by high ranking officials.
Dr. Penner: Karol Noymann and I were friends since childhood. We grew to manhood sharing the same goal - science for the benefit of humanity. Somewhere, our ideals were lost, and Karol Noymann died because of it. A deadly weapon he was helping to create killed him, but Karol Noymann hasn't died in vain. His death has served a purpose - to bring me back to my senses. I have found again the ideals Karol and I once had. From now on, my work will be devoted to the aid of humanity, not its destruction. I have made my pledge to you, Karol. May God rest your soul.
Dr. Noymann: We have studied your languages and your many civilisations for thousands of years. We have never bothered Earth because of its slow scientific development, but now you are approaching the space age. You are testing nuclear and rocket devices for travel into space. As we have put the moon and many other planets under our rule, it is now time for us to put Earth under our rule.
Announcer: And the entire world has felt the shock of the sudden and very strange warnings delivered by some sort of invisible life from another planet. At this very moment, every capital in the world has called an emergency meeting to discuss a unified defence of the Earth. Apparently, there is no indication that any of the nations intend to surrender as demanded by the invaders.
Narrator: Dr. Penner and Dr. Lamont began immediate experiments in a desperate effort to make the invader visible to the human eye. The vast scientific knowledge of the two men was put to the test in a race against time, for they knew that with every moment of failure, thousands more people all over Earth would die. Time was running out for the defenders. The world was nearing the end of its ability to fight back, for this was the third day. By midnight, the human race on Earth would cease to exist.
Narrator: In the United Nations building in New York, a special meeting was called. Present were Dr. Penner, his daughter, Major Jay, and Dr. Lamont, to receive grateful thanks from the countries of the world. It was because of these that I took up radio astronomy. When I was a boy, I had an uncle who was an archaeologist. Often, he used to take me to some of the sites where he was in charge of the excavations. At a particular dig in the south of France, as well as the usual bones and iron knives, one of his assistants found a strange black cube. It was made of a substance he'd never seen before, and no-one could accounts for its being there. The archaeological finds all went to the museum, but he decided to give me the cube because everyone else said it must have got there recently, by accident. And though he didn't agree, he had no use for it. Not long after he gave the cube to me, I accidentally smashed it, and all that it contained was thousands of strange luminous crystals. They fascinated me so much that I held one as I fell asleep, and that night I had a dream which has haunted me ever since. I was lost on some alien world. There seemed to be volcanic activity, and I remember two moons in the sky. Gradually, I became aware of a strange sound which I felt was a cry for help. I knew someone was in terrible danger and yet I couldn't see them or reach them. And this was the picture I painted next day to try to recall what I'd seen. Doesn't seem much to build a career on, does it? But ... but there was something so real about that dream that I .... I feel I've actually been to the planet, that it was calling to me for help, and that some day I might be able to help it.
Joe: In the name of the people of the planet where I was born, a once proud race now facing defeat by a vicious and detestable enemy, greetings. Long ago, our people mastered the secrets of the universe, and began to explore the stars, hoping to find other beings with whom we could communicate and enrich our common stock of knowledge. In every star system we visited, after ages of searching, we did encounter another intelligent race, but the meeting was not what we had hoped for. But the creatures we now call the enemy, we know almost nothing, only that they inhabit frigid worlds, and that they have set out to destroy us and any race resembling us. To protect ourselves, we developed terrible weapons and built defensive fortresses like this one, in every system which might some day be attacked by the enemy, to send out warning signals when the enemy ships approach their galaxies. But the enemy invented a field which attacks the very mind, and reduces intelligent creatures to the level of animals. Ships like those came to our home planet and now it is a world of savages. We must flee to some part of the galaxy where perhaps the enemy will not follow us. And when you come here, we may all be dead. The ships of the enemy are approaching your galaxy. This fortress stands between them and your world. That is why you were called. You have the weapons here with which to destroy them and to save your own worlds. The cubes will tell you how. Believe me, we're trying. Let me explain it to you. Now, you probably already know the body is like a factory. It's continually producing new cells to replace the older cells, damaged cells or destroyed cells. Now, this happens in all the different parts of the body. Bone cells grow new bone cells. Skin cells grow new skin cells, and so on throughout the body. Here, let me show you. This is an example of bone growth. Now, the broken bone shown in this x-ray became the healed bone shown in this x-ray by means of bone cell growth. Now, notice that the new cells join the broken bone together so that you no longer see any break. Now, a cut, say in your hand, heals in the same way, with new cells replacing the damaged ones.
Dr. Linstrom: And I feel that if you understand the circumstances more thoroughly, you will realise why it'll be better for you to leave. Now, this is a step by step illustration of Glenn's circulatory system in relationship to his growth. Now, this illustration represents Glenn shortly after the accident, and this one is of Glenn as of a few hours ago. Now, if you look closely at each one, you will notice that all the parts are enlarging at the same ratio except for the heart. Now, here. When it was of normal size, the heart measured approximately the size of the distance from his nose to his chin. However, at the size he is now, the heart measures the same as the distance from his lips to his chin. In other words, the heart has increased one half as much as the other parts of the body. Now, remember when I explained the other day why Glenn was growing? I said that all the parts of the body consisted of millions of tiny cells that were rapidly and uncontrollably multiplying.

It is strange to think that barely ninety days ago ...
Protester: We are not a political party, and we have no intention of becoming one. We derive our support from individuals of all parties. The campaign for nuclear disarmament opposes all tests, manufacture, stockpiling, possession or intended use of nuclear weapons. The world today is imperilled by nuclear anarchy. Nuclear weapons no longer threaten the enemy, but the whole of Mankind. The fact that we are living in a nuclear age should be a challenge, not a threat. Instead of building bigger, better and more weapons, we should be concentrating on the tremendous task of feeding the hungry, healing the sick and clothing the naked. Let us abandon our nuclear weapons and let the manpower and materials released to be used for human betterment throughout the world.
Prime Minister: I felt it necessary to speak to you all, if only to stop the many wild and irresponsible rumours precipitated by a general lack of facts. There has indeed been a displacement in the direction of the polar axis, but it is not a catastrophe, nor is it the millennium. Geologists and astronomers have long had evidence that the tilt of the Earth has been altered more than once in the history of its evolution, and it has survived them all. Now, what does this mean to us in our daily lives? Well, some of the seasons as we know them may be disturbed and change their intensity. Displacement has undoubtedly brought some regions nearer to the polar circle, whilst others have been carried further from it. But I have the utmost confidence the world's scientists can produce solutions for any of the climatic problems we are likely to meet. I know that many of you are blaming the combined effects of nuclear tests for this disturbance to the motion of the Earth. I must tell you that the majority of the world's scientists deny that this is the cause. I would be failing in my duty if I did not admit to you that there are many others who believe it could have been, but whatever the rights, or whatever the wrongs, the four major powers have now reached unconditional agreement to cease all further tests, experiments, manufacture and work on nuclear projects.
Prime Minister: ... drastic, drastic conditions demand drastic action. Scientists are unanimous that we must attempt to change or at least check the movement towards the sun. And so all thermonuclear bombs, the largest ever devised, will be detonated simultaneously one hundred miles apart in the west of Siberia. And to this end they have been working with all possible speed, before conditions of heat make assembly uncontrollable. No-one, and I repeat no-one, can tell us exactly what this massive explosion will affect. One thing is certain, however. Without it we are a doomed planet. With it, we can only place our souls in the hands of the almighty.
Pete Stenning: So Man has sown the wind and reaped the whirlwind. Perhaps in the next few hours there will be no remembrance of the past and no hope for the future that might have been. All the works of Man will be consumed in the great fire out of which he was created. But perhaps at the heart of the burning light into which he has thrust his world, there is a heart that cares more for him than he has ever cared for himself. And if there is a future for Man, insensitive as he is, proud and defiant in his pursuit of power, let him resolve to live it lovingly, for he knows well how to do so. Then he may say once more, "Truly the light is sweet, and what a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to see the sun." - DirectorEdward LudwigStarsRichard DenningMara CordayCarlos RivasVolcanic activity frees giant scorpions from the earth who wreak havoc in the rural countryside and eventually threaten Mexico City.Narrator: For centuries, the prayers of Mexico's peasants have been their only shield against the devastating furies that have wrecked their homes and destroyed their lives. Dangers which challenge his life, threaten his very existence. Sound frequencies have been found that can penetrate the human brain and destroy life. Deadly isotopes of unknown elements have been discovered that can burn and sear the flesh. Pilotless aircraft crashing the sonic barrier can gain complete mastery over the skies. To meet this challenge to our existence, a new agency has been formed: OSI, the Office of Scientific Investigation. The operatives of OSI are called A-Men. A-Men; sounds like the final word of a prayer. It is not. A stands for atom and atom stands for power, power man has unleashed but has not yet learned to control. Whirling in space, each atom is a solar system unto itself. When studied separately, its gamma rays yield information useful in the experiments carried on by the technicians at OSI. Our equipment covers the range of instruments, from the simple test tube to the complex 50,000 volt electron microscope. A-Men are detectives with degrees in science. The criminals we seek are sometimes invisible to the human eye, like radiation from outer space, or particles held prisoner deep in the heart of the atom. Infinitesimal, yet within this tiny molecule, there's a tremendous force that once unlocked can create or destroy planets. Our Earth is a planet. July 18. The morning, calm, quiet, peaceful. I reported for work as usual at 8:55 AM. My name is Stewart, Jeff Stewart, class of '39, MIT, Boston, Mass. I'm in charge of research at OSI. The world seemed safe and good.
Jeff: 10:40 AM. Forbes and I went back, checked the hardware store with special equipment, then returned to OSI. We didn't know where the element was, but we knew it would strike again. We tried to get ready for it, though our clues were pathetically few. The speed of an alpha particle is between nine and twenty thousand miles a second. Applying standard procedure, we measured the speed and distance of the radioactive particles emitted by the empty container we'd found in the attic. Next we analysed dust particles and fingernail scrapings taken from the dead man. Without a sample of the element itself, we could only hope for the best. From the film played of the spectrum of an element, it is possible with amazing accuracy to obtain the isotopes, unit charge and atomic weight of a substance. The spectograph of our dust particles was carefully examined, but the test yielded results we'd never seen before. In desperation, we decided to submit our findings to the electronic brain. Our calculations were forwarded by long distance telephone, received by the input unit, and automatically recorded for assimilation by the brain. While our findings were being coded and the computations punched on cards, the extensive library of every basic element and radioactive substance known to man was systematically examined. If a similar element existed, it would be found among the thousands of facts available to the machines that comprised the system known as the MANIAC. Finally, the tabulations were double-checked against our mathematical description of the element that had already taken the life of one man. Unless we were able to stop it, its radioactivity would remain a constant threat. Our problem was fed to the brain, an automatically sequenced computer employing a high speed cathode ray memory unit. The MANIAC sings with weird voices when it is working. But even under skilled guidance it faltered and was silent, frustrated by an unknown element that could kill. 1:15 PM. Every means of communication was used to inform the city that a dangerously radioactive element was at large. The public and all federal and civilian agencies were instructed to report immediately any disturbances in home appliances, radio, television, radar screens and scopes, high frequency equipment, telephone service, Western Union facilities, and all types of electrical equipment. Every fifteen minutes, Dr. Allard and myself took turns broadcasting on the radio.
Jeff: Specially trained technicians from the State University prepared to receive the element being transported across the field under police guard. Every precaution was taken by the men who would accompany the element on its long journey, but even then we failed to realise the power of Denker's creation. The element was reaching out with invisible fingers, gripping metallic objects with terrifying strength. We had no time to consider the reason for Denker's experiment or what he had hoped to accomplish. Our main concern was to remove the element from the airfield as soon as we could. Working as quickly as possible, the technicians opened Denker's briefcase. Using non-magnetic tools, they carefully removed the cylinder containing the new element, and transferred it to a case made of special alloys designed to prevent the spread of radioactive particles. The guards had not been required to wear protective clothing due to their brief exposure to the element, yet they shared our relief in the fact that the element was in a double container. For added protection, a special lead-lined truck had been provided to contain any stray radiation while the element was en route to its destination, the cyclotron at the State University. Denker was right - in nuclear research, there is no place for lone wolves. July 19th. Forbes and I had installed the element in its new home in the cyclotron at the State University. It was early morning by the time we'd been checked through radiation quarantine and had made our report to Dr. Allard. As I approached home, and Connie, Denker's dying words kept ringing in my ears. It will reach out with its magnetic arms and grab anything within its reach and kill it.
Jeff: 8:55. With a sample of the element to work with at last, we began a series of exhaustive tests. Our first move was to check its chemical composition, critical mass, density and point of saturation. Measuring the emission of its alpha and beta particles was almost beyond the scope of the Geiger counter's scaling unit. Testing it under extremely high frequencies, we were able to ascertain the exact strength of its magnetic field. The response of the element bore out Denker's statement. It was of a highly unstable nature, and its wavelength yield frequencies well above two million megacycles per second. Intense heat enabled us to photograph its spectrum, and three hours later we had compiled all the information possible. Our next step was to consult the MANIAC. At last we were coming close to a true picture of the monster Denker had blundered into existence.
Jeff: July 21, 7:45 AM. We had sapped the strength of the city to keep a monster alive. The element had been fed, and for the time being was at rest. The Air Command supplied us with jet aircraft - one for Forbes and myself, and one for the element. It had quadrupled its size, and due to its increasing density, we were no longer able to extract a sample even for test purposes. A new cylinder had been fashioned from a combination of special alloys. We were able to contain the strength of the element's magnetic field and lessen the degree of its radiation, but like a chained beast it had the power to break loose in an unpredictable frenzy. The element was loaded into the plane for the trip that we hoped would carry it to final and total destruction. Forbes and I had already taken off in the jet bomber that had been placed at our disposal by the Air Command. Ours was a fast ship, but no match for the pursuit job that was to carry the element to its destination. By placing the element in the plane, the technicians from State University had fulfilled their end of the bargain. The rest was up to the pilot. 8:43 AM. The element was airborne. We'd countless tests with the monster Denker had created, but we didn't know how it would react to the sudden acceleration of a jet fighter plane. Fortunately, or unfortunately, the pilot would be the only one who could tell us. 11:17 AM. Somewhere over Kansas. The fighter had dropped its wing tanks and was prepared to take on fuel while in flight to save the one important factor - time. If the element was hungry, it would have to wait until the fighter quenched its thirst. Our bomber was next. Finally our tanks were full. Time: 11:51. Destination: Nova Scotia. What we'd do there, we didn't know for sure. If we got there, we had exactly one hour and 35 minutes to find out. - DirectorJack PollexfenStarsLon Chaney Jr.Max ShowalterMarian CarrCharles "The Butcher" Benton, a brutal death row inmate gets double-crossed by his crooked lawyer. He gets his chance for revenge when, after he's been executed, a bizarre experiment brings him back to life and more deadly than ever.Lt. Chasen: Dr. Bradshaw's experiment had given life back to the Butcher. He tried to talk, but the electrical voltage had burned out his vocal cords, yet it hadn't destroyed his brain. He knew who he was. He knew who he hated. As he stumbled about the room, I think he thought only about one thing: kill Lowe, Squeamy and Joe Marcelli. The tremendous electrical voltage that Dr. Bradshaw had given the Butcher had increased his cellular structure to the point where he was no longer a man. Dr. Bradshaw's experiment had created a vicious, brutal animal with an almost inconceivable amount of strength. Dr. Bradshaw must have believed the Butcher's regained life would last for only a few minutes. Therefore, instead of calling for help, the doctor decided to handle his creation alone.

She's so amusing. Her sense of humour is, shall we say, original. I dreamed up the hearse. It's empty now, but after a night in the House on Haunted Hill, who knows? This is Lance Schroeder, a test pilot, so no doubt a brave man. But don't you think you can be much braver if you're paid for it? And I happen to know that Lance needs the 10,000 I'll give him, if he's brave enough to stay all night. This is Ruth Bridgers. You've no doubt read her column in the newspapers. She says her reason for coming to the party is to write a feature article on ghosts. She's also desperate for money. Gambles. You've already met Watson Pritchard, a man living in mortal fear of a house, and yet he is risking his life to spend another night here. I wonder why? He says for money. This is Dr. David Trent, a psychiatrist. He claims that my ghosts will help his work on hysteria, but don't you see a little touch of greed there, around the mouth and eyes? This is Nora Manning. I picked her from the thousands of people who work for me because she needed the 10,000 more than most. Supports her whole family. Isn't she pretty? The party's starting now, and you have until midnight to find the House on Haunted Hill.

I feel obligated to warn you that some of the sensations, some of the physical reactions, which the actors on the screen will feel, will also be experienced for the first time in motion picture history by certain members of this audience. I say certain members because some people are more sensitive to these mysterious electronic impulses than others. These, uh, unfortunate, sensitive people will at times feel a strange, tingling sensation. Others will feel it less strongly. But don't be alarmed. You can protect yourself. At any time you are conscious of a tingling sensation, you may obtain immediate relief by screaming. Don't be embarrassed about opening your mouth and letting rip with all you've got, because the person in the seat right next to you will probably be screaming too. And remember this: A scream at the right time may save your life.

If you'll just calm down, General. I'll explain. Doctor, please put up that chart. Time is important, more so than you realise, but bombing that nest tonight would only aggravate our problem. The reason none of them have been seen during the day, even by the police spotting planes, is because they don't like the heat of the desert. They forage only between sunset and dawn, when it's cool, so half the colony wouldn't even be inside the nest tonight. Our best chance will be during the hottest part of the day tomorrow. Now, this ... this illustrates a typical ant nest. Observe the details. Here's the entrance. These are tunnels and corridors, food chambers. Note the wonderful and intricate engineering. Water traps, so that none will drown during rains. This is somewhat over-simplified, I admit, but it will give you an idea of what we're up against. Do you know that some species of desert ants dig down as deep as 30 feet and more?
Harold: Gentlemen, I believe we are ready. Now, some of you have displayed incredulous attitudes towards our reports and photographs. The rest of you are trying to understand the gravity of our situation, but repeatedly ask how really serious it is. Now, for your edification, I have prepared a short film which I hope will give you some idea of the nature of the creatures we're up against, in a small way, of course. Robert, please turn out the lights. Now, these ants and related species are common to most of America. As a matter of fact, you can find them in backyards, empty lots and fields throughout the temperate zones of the world. They haven't changed in either form or habits for more than 50 million years. Here, for instance, is one such specimen that got himself trapped in amber, which we know is at least that old. Ah, now we come to some different kind of ants. The big fellow there, feeding on the smaller red grease-eaters, is of a savage species called Camponotus Vicinus Mayr. He's of a desert variety, very similar to the giant mutations we found in New Mexico. There is a side view of a small nest. Those white objects are ant eggs. Ants don't see well at all. They hear, smell and locate objects entirely with their radar-like antennae. Only after food or an enemy is located with the antennae are the savage mandibles put to work. Now, gentlemen, watch this demonstration of power. A pebble has blocked the entrance to the nest. That creature is determined to remove the obstacle. Note how the mandibles are used to grasp the pebble and finally pull it aside with only a slight assist from another ant. Now, there's the same pebble on a laboratory scales. Balancing it is a dish containing 20 ants. We've learned that one of these quarter-inch long insects can lift 20 times its own weight. That's equal to one of you lifting a ton and a half or more. Oh, now here are rare shots of a new-born queen and her consorts. Technically, she should be referred to as a princess until after the mating flight. Now there is a close shot of a winged male. The males are unequipped for survival beyond the mating, and die soon afterwards. The queen flies on, or more precisely, is borne by the winds until her need prompts her to seek a place to lay eggs. - DirectorDavid KramarskyRoger CormanLou PlaceStarsPaul BirchLorna ThayerDona ColeA dysfunctional family operating an isolated date farm in the California desert is threatened by the arrival of an extra-terrestrial.Allan: A date ranch in the off-season is the loneliest place in the world. When you've lived through ten years of off-seasons, it does things to you. Not very nice things, I'm afraid. This is my ranch, not much of a place anymore. We've been losing money for three years now; I guess that makes me a failure. At least, my wife seems to think so. But it isn't just the fact that the ranch is going bust, it isn't just being alone out here day after day, year after year. It has something to do with the feeling you get when you start thinking, "What's out there, just beyond the grove, surrounding us?" A vast and cruel world, still, dry, deadly, slowly withering beneath the white heat of that desert sun, the perfect place to hatch a brood of horror, or of hate. Perhaps it began out there, the hate. Something that goes far deeper than angry words - a growing, twisting thing that's slowly destroying us.
Beast: Your world. Life on my planet is dying out, or I should say we begin to die. You see, I and my kind have no material form of our own, and so we must use the bodies of those that do. We, shall I be specific, feed on brains. Unfortunately, they don't last very long, so we've been reduced to seeking a new world, new life. Emissaries have been sent to many planets in different solar systems. Those that return will decide our new source of food supply. This is somewhat like our own planet, though ours is a dark world. This is a perfect testing ground, isolated, possessing hate. Hate and madness are the keys to power in my world, and this one seemed easy, but something went wrong. I've invaded the minds of the birds and the animals, used their brains and eyes against you. Every move you've made has been observed by their eyes. I have waited for you to weaken, but you have a secret, Earthman, some power I don't understand. Instead of weakening, you've all grown stronger, even the one I was able to control completely. It would have astounded Peary to learn that by the late 1950s and early '60s, the vast frozen top of the world he pioneered had become a vital highway for world travel and commerce. Not just in the skies, but also deep under the ice, in the frigid five million square mile depths of the Arctic Ocean. Here, great passenger and cargo-carrying atomic submarines glided by the dozens back and forth across the Pole until a series of mysterious undersea disasters threatened to close the Arctic route forever. The decisive moment came May 3rd at 13:15 hours when the undersea atomic liner Sturgeon, largest of them all, reached eighty-seven degrees, ten minutes north latitude, only a few miles from the North Pole itself. According to the official reports, the next phase of the life and death drama occurred May 10th in Washington at a hush-hush super-secret meeting of the Arctic theatre war room.

Several remarkable features of this rock attracted the attention of the scientists engaged on the project. Research revealed that it contained a spool. Further analysis showed the material to be extra-terrestrial in origin and not of human manufacture. Where did it come from? Then somebody remembered that in June 1908 in Siberia, an explosion had occurred equivalent in force to a hydrogen bomb, an explosion visible within a radius of 350 miles. At the time it was thought to have been caused by a giant meteor. 77 years later, an international expedition tried to determine the trajectory and the point of impact, and to find some debris of what was called the Tongu meteor. Shortly afterwards, under the auspices of the World Federation for Space Research, scientists meet to celebrate the anniversary of the establishment of the first space station on the moon. Professor Harringway from the United States makes a public statement about the famous meteor.
Prof. Harringway: Our calculations indicate, confirmed also by the results recently transmitted to us by our colleagues on Luna 3, that the mysterious Tongu meteor was really a spaceship from another planet which exploded in the air before landing.
Robert: This is the beginning of my personal log book. There's no-one in the nerve centre of the Cosmostrator. The computer is keeping us on our course. In case of unforeseen circumstances it can take immediate decisions to alter our speed or direction. This electronic brain will be our pilot for the next 30 days, because no human being could handle the immensely complex machines of the spaceship by himself. Up to now we have covered a distance of 2,600,000 miles. Dr. Omigura is noting our reactions carefully and keeping close check on our health and wellbeing. A special liquid food, which can easily be absorbed in the state of no gravity, is proving very successful with all of us. Our chief engineer spends most of his time in his machine shop testing his automats over and over again. It is thanks to them that we are relieved of many tiresome tasks. Our expert in cybernetics has to be everywhere. He's one of the key man of the expedition. Professor Sikarna devotes all his time to the message from Venus. He and Tchen Yu are trying to decipher the damaged spool, which means they spend long hours at the ????. The electronic brain is working night and day. No-one can be sure what the result will be. Is the secret of eternal life just around that corner? Today, medical science patches up mutilated bodies, transplanting human skin, eyes, limbs, even vital organs. Is the next step the transplantation of the human brain? Many scientists answer yes, but they pause and add a grim warning. For in the ancient folk legends, tales are told of blood-sucking vampires crawling out of graves to live on the bodies of helpless victims. Is man now doomed to produce a race of ever-living monstrosities, worse than the vampires of legend? Will ruthless men and women of great wealth and power readily buy or steal the living bodies of the young and beautiful, so their brains may live on forever? Such questions may seem fanciful, but at this very moment, scientists are working on the answer to brain transplantation, and human bodies are used. This girl was buried in a nearby cemetery yesterday. Only a few hours ago, her body was stolen by Dr. Otto Frank and brought to this hidden laboratory. He has grafted a living animal's brain into this newly dead body. If the experiment works, the next step will be the transplantation of a human brain. The brain cells are being reactivated by atomic fission, produced in the cyclotron. Has he found the way to outwit death? Or has he created another monstrosity?
