The game is boxing and Nick Benko (Rod Steiger) has a new boy he sees as a big money maker. He's Toro Moreno (Mike Lane) from Argentina. He's big at 6 foot 6 or so but he has a powder puff punch a glass jaw and a soft stomach. Eddie Willis' (Bogart) job is to make Toro bigger than life. Something he gets really good at. Benko however has his own ideas as Toro racks up an impressive record at the hands of a bunch of tank artists. Finally Benko and Toro see the dream come true as Toro gets to fight the champ in Buddy Brannen (real life boxer Max Baer, the guy that ends Carnera's career basically) But Brannen can not be bought and vows to "butcher" Toro.
