Comments: And yet again Ben Affleck is snubbed by the Academy for Best Director. Almost everyone was positive he would finally get in but perhaps his leading man days are still clouding voters judgment, or maybe they just didnt like Argo as much as everyone else seemed to. Some surprise nominations on the technical side of things with noms for sound editing and sound mixing. UPDATE: While it was intially thought that this film had no chance due to being snubbed for Best Director, its recent wins at both Golden Globes and Critics Choice indicate a strong level of support that still remains behind it. ” - HLMPartDeux

Comments: Definite Frontrunner now that Argo, Zero Dark Thirty, and Les Miserables got snubbed out of Best Director. Having the Most Nominations (It has 12) usually means it will win as well. Lewis is a lock and Jones is a near lock but Field has no chance. ” - HLMPartDeux

Comments: The action-comedy type aesthetic may seem to be the sort of thing that usually turns Oscar voters away but that didn't stop Inglorious Basterds from receiving a ton of nominations and Django's inclusion shouldnt be a surprise to anyone. Dicapro was getting alot of attention early on, but surprisingly Waltz had all of the awards buzz going in. Tarantino being left out of Best Director is somewhat surprising. ” - HLMPartDeux

Comments: There are two possible reasons for the snub of Bigelow in the Best Director race: either the endless amount of negative publicity actually had an effect on the race or voters just didn't want to nominate her again after her recent win. Its still the frontrunner for the screenplay and Chastain still has a strong chance to win for Best Actress. ” - HLMPartDeux

Comments: Audiences are loving the film however, critics are split. It still has a chance to win Best Picture due to the emotional response the film gets from people, however it isnt looking good at the moment. Hathaway is a lock for a win and there is no way she loses. Hooper was thought to have a strong shot at a directing nomination but apparently the voters agreed with most critics that the directing on the film was atrocious. Jackman is in the strongest position to overthrow Day-Lewis for the frontrunner spot in best actor. ” - HLMPartDeux

Comments: Since Cannes, everyone has been calling it one of the best films of the year (as seen through its victory of the Palm d'or). Many people didnt expect voters to give a foreign language film so many nominations but Haenke has an excellent reputation and the film has been getting a great response since its debut. The Oscars dont have as much of a bias against foreign language films as many other awards shows do. ” - HLMPartDeux

Comments: After the premiere in Cannes everyone was predicting this film to be the next "little film that could" that pops up every year and surprisingly becomes a top contender to win (for example The Artist(2012), Precious(2010), The Hurt Locker(2010), Slumdog Millionaire(2009), Juno(2008), Little Miss Sunshine(2007), etc.). While that has come true to a certain extent, winning is still a long shot. The poor box office caused many to believe it was out but apparently the voters dont care much about that aspect. Zeitlin's director nomination may be surprising to some considering his youth and the being his first film but the directing has always been the most highly praised aspect of the film. ” - HLMPartDeux

Comments: After every screening of this film audiences are left with similar responses of "huh?" and "i need to sleep on it to figure it out". The unconventional nature of the film likely kept it out of the Best Picture and Best Screenplay lineups, however the acting has always been the aspect that everyone unanimously agrees is excellent. Some people thought it may have slipped in like "Tree of Life" last year but I guess there wasnt even that much love the film itself. Some thought the polarizing response to the film would hurt the actor's chances but voters didnt seem to care. ” - HLMPartDeux

Comments: Despite being one of the most critically acclaimed filmmakers of our time, Wes Anderson has never received a Best Picture or Best Director nomination, and only has one Writing nomination. Comments: Since the screening at Sundance, Buzz has been through the roof on this film and John Hawkes performance in particular. Hawkes' nomination was thought to be a lock but with 6 strong Best Actor contenders, someone had to get left out. If Hawkes got snubbed and since the film received no other nominations, Hunt's chances at winning are very slim ” - HLMPartDeux

Comments: All reviews for the movie have been glowing, calling this one the best bond film ever. Whether that large-scale critical respect will make the Academy ignore the fact that they dont like to nominate action movies still remains to be seen. If anything, the actors have a much better chance than the film itself and both Bardem and Dench are getting great reviews for thier performances. The fact that they are well-loved by the Academy will help alot as well (bardem has 3 noms/1 win and dench has 6 noms/1 win).
As for the song, Adele's name alone should push this towards a Best Song nomination and possible win. Cinematography is also a strong possibility due to the love that many have for Roger Deakins and the fact that it has frequently been noted as one of the best aspects of the movie. ” - HLMPartDeux

Comments: Reviews on this one have been really great. However, while the return of old Tim Burton has invited the praise of the critics, the audiences don't seem to care. I think its fair to call it a bomb at the box office at this point but that may not have as much bearing in this category as it sometimes does in others. The animated branch has rewarded many low grossing films in the past (stop-motion, claymation, foreign) and in a year where there is no real standout it definitely has a chance to win due to it being the best reviewed animated film of the year. ” - HLMPartDeux

Comments: The Academy ignored Aardman Animation's last film Arthur Christmas and this one has reviews similar to that one. No where near the response that a Wallace & Gromit Aardman film gets, and theres 2 other high profile stopmotion movies in the mix this year "Frankenweenie" and "Paranorman". However, all that didnt stop its nomination. The surprise bomb that was Rise of the Guardians likely left a spot open and critics/voters clearly love stop-motion.  ” - HLMPartDeux
