Shemp Howard
Shemp Howard was born Samuel Horwitz in Brooklyn, New York, USA. He was also the brother of fellow stooges Moe Howard and Curly Howard. Larry Fine was not related to any of the other stooges. When not working with The Three Stooges, Shemp made a lot of feature film appearances, such as The Bank Dick with W.C. Fields...
“ Son of Sol Horowitz; brother of actors Curly Howard and Moe Howard, and non-actors, Jack Horowitz and Irving Horowitz.

During the early 1940s, when his solo career was at its height and he was a contract player at Universal Studios appearing with everyone from Bud Abbott and Lou Costello to W.C. Fields to John Wayne, he was promoted as "The Ugliest Man in the Movies".

Member of The Three Stooges until 1930, when he was replaced by his brother Curly Howard (Jerome) until 1946 when Curly had a debilitating stroke, Shemp rejoined the team and was brought back, with Curly's blessing, to be a stopgap until Curly got better. Unfortunately, Curly never got well enough to continue, so Shemp stayed with The Three Stooges until his own death.

He got the name "Shemp" when he was a child. Whenever his mother would say his name, "Sam", the combination of her heavy Lithuanian accent and abrupt manner of speaking made it come out sounding like "Shemp". The name stuck.

The phrase "to shemp" meaning "to fake" was coined from the actor's name. It was inspired by Columbia's use of an uncredited double in order to complete several Three Stooges shorts left uncompleted at the time of Shemp Howard's death. Director Sam Raimi, a fan of The Three Stooges, credits stand-ins and body doubles in his movies as "Fake Shemps," a reference to the body doubles that Columbia Pictures used after Shemp's death.

Like brother Curly with his infamous "Woo-woo-woo" and "Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk", Shemp also had a well-known quirk - he would go, "Gee-gee-gee-gee-gee!" in many of his films.

He, Larry Fine, Moe Howard and Curly Howard appear in only one short together, Hold That Lion! (1947). Curly appears uncredited as a train car passenger (watch for the man with the hat on his face). This was a short, non-speaking cameo, due to Curly's health issues. ” - SombeeKillah

32.
Moe Howard
Moe Howard, the "Boss Stooge" and brother of Stooges Curly Howard and Shemp Howard, began his acting career in 1909 by playing bit roles in silent Vitagraph films. At 17 he joined a troupe working on a showboat and also appeared in several two-reel comedy shorts. In 1922 he, brother Shemp and Larry Fine joined roughhouse vaudeville comic Ted Healy...
“ When he and brother Shemp Howard put on shows for families and friends as children, they used younger brother Curly Howard in female roles. Curly, at seven, had trouble remembering his lines so Moe made cue cards on adhesive tape and stuck them to his forehead for Curly to read.

His famous "bowl" haircut came by accident. As a child, his mother always wanted a girl, and with Moe being the youngest at the time, she would play dress-up with him, putting him in dresses and bologna curling his long hair. One day, after being picked on for months in school, he and some friends hid in the shed, and he chopped all of the hair off, using a bowl as a guide. After doing so, he was so afraid to face his mother, he hid for hours. Finally coming out, after seeing his hair, she cried out that she was so happy he did so, simply because she couldn't bring herself to. His hair stuck with him all his life.

He was very protective of his brother Curly Howard, who was in reality quite shy and not known to stand up for himself.

Moe was the business-minded one of the group. He knew that Curly liked to spend his money on partying and women, and Larry liked to spend his at the racetrack. So, he drew up an agreement where Larry and Curly turned over a certain percentage of their salaries to him. He, in turn, invested it for them. The result was that, while Larry and Curly were not as wealthy as Moe was (he invested far more of his own money and was quite well off), he ensured that their spendthrift habits did not result in their being broke when their careers ended. ” - SombeeKillah

Curly Howard
Jerome "Curly" Howard, the rotund, bald Stooge with the high voice was the most popular member of The Three Stooges. His first stage experience was as a comedic conductor for the Orville Knapp Band in 1928. Curly joined The Three Stooges in 1932, replacing his brother Shemp Howard. He made more than...
“ Shared the same nickname, "Babe," as another contemporary rotund slapstick comic, Oliver Hardy, although it was a coincidence. Curly was the youngest of the three Howard brothers--the others being Moe and Shemp--and his mother always called him "My Baby." His brothers shortened it to "Babe" and used it to constantly tease him. The nickname stuck to him all his life.

The accident he had as a child, which gave him his limp, was a gun accident. One morning he was playing in the backyard, with his pistol, and it had a hair trigger. He accidentally shot his foot and was so frightened of surgery that he never got it fixed. Moe was the one who found him. To mask it on screen, he developed his famous exaggerated walk.

Ted Healy, who originated the idea of The Three Stooges' brutal style of comedy, wasn't originally interested in hiring Curly to replace Shemp Howard, the original stooge, after Shemp left the group. Curly had wavy chestnut-brown hair and a waxed mustache. When he went out and completely shaved his head and (eventually) his mustache, Healy hired him on the spot.

He shaved his head for his "Curly" character but did not like it because he felt it reduced his appeal to ladies. Unlike his character, he was very shy and withdrawn when not on camera.

His famous "woo-woo-woo" was an ad lib, originated in The Three Stooges short Woman Haters (1934) their first of almost 200 short films for Columbia Pictures.

Despite his shy nature, the success and celebrity of The Three Stooges triggered his lifelong indulgences in drinking too much, overeating and womanizing. He was also a compulsive spender. Brother Moe Howard, the business manager of the group, tried to curtail Curly's spending habits but was unable to. Despite several hospitalizations for health problems due to his lifestyle, Curly stubbornly refused to change it.

During a visit to The Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara in January, 1945, he was diagnosed as having extreme hypertension, a retinal hemorrhage and obesity thus explaining his ragged appearance in all of the shorts released in 1946-1947, his last year with the group.

The final pie-fight scene of Half-Wits Holiday (1947) did not include Curly because he had suffered a stroke the day the scene was filmed.

After his stroke in 1947, he was left half paralyzed and unable to work, with expensive medical bills. Brothers Moe Howard and Shemp Howard, and fellow Stooge Larry Fine, set aside percentages of their weekly paychecks to help him.

With a full head of hair, he appears for the first time with both Moe and Shemp and Larry in The Three Stooges short 'Hold That Lion!' (1947); it was also his last Stooge appearance.

He filmed a scene for The Three Stooges short Malice in the Palace (1949) as a chef, but it was left on the cutting room floor (although there are publicity photographs of the scene). ” - SombeeKillah
