Analyzing enjoyment of movies by both husband and wife, depending on who picked the movie and genre associated.
Midnight in Paris
While on a trip to Paris with his fiancée's family, a nostalgic screenwriter finds himself mysteriously going back to the 1920s everyday at midnight. (94 mins.)
“ Love Love Loved this movie. Chick pick but both of us loved it and still compare movies to it, from a story standpoint. ” - witqueen
Crazy, Stupid, Love.

“ Man pick. We both loved it. ” - witqueen
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
A substance, designed to help the brain repair itself, gives rise to a super-intelligent chimp who leads an ape uprising. (105 mins.)
“ Mutual Pick. Really well done, not what I expected. More sequels should take note and be willing to be creative. Both loved it. Man Flick but Chicks will enjoy. ” - witqueen
The powerful but arrogant god Thor is cast out of Asgard to live amongst humans in Midgard (Earth), where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders. (115 mins.)
“ Mutual pick after arriving at theater late. Not bad 6 stars out of 10 ” - witqueen
Our Idiot Brother
A comedy centered on an idealist who barges into the lives of his three sisters. (90 mins.)
“ Chick Pick and both laughed, enjoyable film. ” - witqueen
When a group of hard-working guys find out they've fallen victim to their wealthy employer's Ponzi scheme, they conspire to rob his high-rise residence. (104 mins.)
“ Well done, truly enjoyed. Just the right amount of comedy and a bit of drama. Not over the top, no gratuitous violence or special effects. Theater was full for a Saturday night and the audience was heard clapping and approving. Chick pick but male flick as well. Recommend. ” - witqueen
Travel writer Lemuel Gulliver takes an assignment in Bermuda, but ends up on the island of Liliput, where he towers over its tiny citizens. (85 mins.)
“ LOL funny in that Jack Black way. We both laughed, mutual pick needed a laugh after getting lost on the way to the theater, taking a shortcut that lasted 2 hours, for a theater 15 minutes away. ” - witqueen
“ Man Pick. Hate the series. I was able to sit through this one. Hubby agreed best of the lot. ” - witqueen
At an Antarctica research site, the discovery of an alien craft leads to a confrontation between graduate student Kate Lloyd and scientist Dr. Sander Halvorson. (103 mins.)
“ Hated it. Hubby loved it, felt it was decent prequel to 1982 movie. I simply pointed out all the errors and stupidity and really bad acting.
Man Pick. ” - witqueen
Strange lights descend on the city of Los Angeles, drawing people outside like moths to a flame where an extraterrestrial force threatens to swallow the entire human population off the face of the Earth. (97 mins.)
“ Snoozefest. Worst alien sci-fi movie ever. The only good thing is I saw it in the UK and no one recognized me leaving the theater. ” - witqueen
A car accident puts Paige in a coma, and when she wakes up with severe memory loss, her husband Leo works to win her heart again. (104 mins.)
“ Good cast, bad scripting and development. Definitely a movie for twentysomethings who may enjoy the manipulated drama, but give me a story I can sink my teeth into or care about the characters. Some ideas seem good on paper, and should be left there. ” - witqueen
The Woman in Black
A young solicitor travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals. (95 mins.)
“ While I was being bored watching The Vow, my hubby's pick of Woman in Black, was at least entertaining. Alot of good scary bits, and Hammer Studios went old school and gave a jump worthy movie. Good plot with decent twists, makes it seem as if Daniel Radcliffe can hold his own without the Potter cast. ” - witqueen
On the night of the discovery of a duplicate Earth in the Solar system, an ambitious young student and an accomplished composer cross paths in a tragic accident. (92 mins.)
“ I rather stab myself in the eye then have to watch this piece of crap again. Slow, agonizing acting, storyline predictable, and using the premise of an alternate universe up to your imagination as an ending, only means the writers didn't know how to end the film, so they leave it up to the viewer. Major disappointment, but then again its from France. ” - witqueen
Love Never Dies
10 years has passed since a fire broke out in Paris - leaving only a mask behind... As the love story continues in Coney Island... (121 mins.)
“ Brilliant. My husband and I both were fortunate to catch the two day limited release at the Imax to watch the sequel to Phantom of the Opera as it takes place 10 years after the play. I don't want to give any spoilers, but they got this production right and Andrew Lloyd Weber gives a somewhat long winded intro but worth the wait. I hope they produce and release this on Broadway. ” - witqueen
Earth's mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity. (143 mins.)
“ Man pick, this chick had a yawn fest.
While there was one or two lines I may have chuckled, its an assault on the senses. Take away visual 3d effects, and it falls short as a movie. A 10 minutes story line, about the attention span of any comic book with as much depth. Joss Whedan can do better, but for a man pick..they so go..for a chick flick..stay home. ” - witqueen
The Magic of Belle Isle
Monty Wildhorn, an alcoholic novelist of Westerns, has lost his drive. His nephew pushes him to summer in quiet Belle Isle. He begrudgingly befriends a newly single mom and her 3 girls who help him find the inspiration to write again. (109 mins.)
“ A Feel Good, Magical Movie
Brilliant cast, understated humor with a sardonic wit. This is old school story telling, where a movie can stand on the writing and the actors are convincing that it seems they are speaking from the heart, not memorizing lines. No special effects needed here, just sit back and enjoy the view in your heart and mind. ” - witqueen
Snow White and the Huntsman
In a twist to the fairy tale, the Huntsman ordered to take Snow White into the woods to be killed winds up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen. (127 mins.)
“ I'm not sure the Grimm Brothers would approve of the casting, and not a mention of Rose Red. However, Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth bring a subtle humanity to this fairy tale, and they play well rounded characters. Kirsten Stewart is simply billed in this to bring in the Twilight fans, as she adds nothing to the story except a face for the name. The story is entertaining and 2 hours passes quickly. The special effects aren't overwhelming to the story line, and the movie is good enough that I would say GO see it, if for anything to wash Disney out of your brain forever. Both the hubby and I enjoyed it. ” - witqueen
Following clues to the origin of mankind, a team find a structure on a distant moon, but they soon find they are not alone. (124 mins.)
“ Where to start on just had bad this movie is? Plot? I've seen less holes in Swiss Cheese. Continuity issues, bad acting, illogical plot..just the start. Saw this in 3D, and had about 10 minutes total out of 2 hours of interesting effects. I was looking forward to this film for months, and I should have known by the way LOST was screwed up, that with Damon Lindonlolf in the mix, the movie is a miss by about a billion miles. I told my husband to go wash his head out after that and submerge himself in Game of Thrones, to get over it. Like Prometheus of myth, I wish I had eagles to tear my eyes out, than have to watch that movie again. Mutual Pick, pissed us both off. -1 star. ” - witqueen
The Amazing Spider-Man
After Peter Parker is bitten by a genetically altered spider, he gains newfound, spider-like powers and ventures out to solve the mystery of his parent's mysterious death. (136 mins.)
“ Very well done, Man pick, then he changed his mind, but I bought the tickets anyway. Since we went to the last show on a Thurs night we had the theater to ourselves. We both loved it, thought the story line was more enjoyable and it caters to both sexes. Technically brilliant, 3D not overdone, nor relied on to carry the movie, it was just the cherry on top. I'm hoping that there are more in this series with Garfield and Emma Stone. Charlie Sheen, Sally Field were great pics for supporting actors tying the older generation with the younger. I say GO and enjoy the ride. Its the closest you will ever come to soaring through the city of NY. ” - witqueen
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World
As an asteroid nears Earth, a man finds himself alone after his wife leaves in a panic. He decides to take a road trip to reunite with his high school sweetheart. Accompanying him is a neighbor who inadvertently puts a wrench in his plan. (101 mins.)
“ This movie should have had a bigger gross, but due to subject content, I can understand why the general public may have ignored. However its a brilliant, intelligent film that focuses on humanity and hope. It is everything life is, funny, ironic, sad, real. See it with someone you love. ” - witqueen
In 19th-century France, Jean Valjean, who for decades has been hunted by the ruthless policeman Javert after breaking parole, agrees to care for a factory worker's daughter. The decision changes their lives forever. (158 mins.)
“ Chick Pick. Hmm..Overhyped, I had high hopes for this movie. I would give it a 5 out of 10 stars for the effort. Saw this Christmas night with my husband and best friend. Sound was pretty bad in the theater, only front speakers working, however it just didn't do a damn thing for me. In fact Toddy cheered when Gavroche was killed because of his "annoying cockney accent". I like other versions of this movie, but it can be viewed on cable. ” - witqueen
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
A reluctant hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, sets out to the Lonely Mountain with a spirited group of dwarves to reclaim their mountain home - and the gold within it - from the dragon Smaug. (169 mins.)
“ Man pick. To quote him, 'Well that was a bit far fetched don't you think? I mean how many times to you get rescued? It was a 3 hour walking tour of New Zealand" Might I add..he's a fan of Tolkien, I'm not, I pretended I was gaming since we saw it in 3d, so I could get through it. At one point..I dozed off.
The Hobbit. 320 pages. Split into 3 movies, 3 years, first one 2 hrs 49 min.
Les Miserables 1232 pgs Eng, (1400pgs French) 1 Movie 2.5 hours.
Take note Hollywood, You don't have to film every...stinking...page. ” - witqueen
Beca, a freshman at Barden University, is cajoled into joining The Bellas, her school's all-girls singing group. Injecting some much needed energy into their repertoire, The Bellas take on their male rivals in a campus competition. (112 mins.)
“ Chick Pick, but one I didn't make him see. I was hesitant to watch this as I am not a fan of Glee or any of those Golly Lets go sing in a group show, but I did enjoy the writing and story line. Well done..and enjoyable. Fat Amy doesn't steal the movie, but is a welcome relief. ” - witqueen
The Incredible Burt Wonderstone
A veteran Vegas magician tries to revive his career after his longtime partner quits, he gets fired from his casino act, and an edgy new "street magician" steals his thunder. (100 mins.)
“ Chick Pick, but hubby wanted to see as well. I am not sure why they are calling this a bomb, as it was charming. Definitely giggle worthy, there could have been a little more meat in the plot, but compared to other movies out there, this was a good date night. Steve Carrell never fails to entertain, and Jim Carey does a great piss take on a Criss Angel type street magician. Don't expect too much and just enjoy the show. ” - witqueen
In 2074, when the mob wants to get rid of someone, the target is sent into the past, where a hired gun awaits - someone like Joe - who one day learns the mob wants to 'close the loop' by sending back Joe's future self for assassination. (119 mins.)
“ Pretty sure man pick, I did enjoy it though. Probably I don't think this movie got enough marketing, but its one of Bruce's better movies. Good storyline, moves fast, definitely worth watching, or putting it in you video files. ” - witqueen
The Great Gatsby
A writer and wall street trader, Nick, finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle of his millionaire neighbor, Jay Gatsby. (143 mins.)
“ Chick Pick but hubby turned down Iron Man 3 to watch. In his words, best movie he's ever seen. We did see it in 3D, but not necessary if you want to save a few dollars. Extremely well done, but my guess is DiCaprio gets overlooked for an Oscar again. Brilliant casting, gorgeous sets and not over acted. Go, enjoy. ” - witqueen
Star Trek Into Darkness
After the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction. (132 mins.)
“ Nope. Screw You JJ Abrams
Hubby enjoyed it. I'm a purist when it comes to Star Trek. There were too many things wrong about the movie, scenes borrowed, and time lines altered and roles reversed. Lazy ass writing just like they did with LOST. Does he have to ruin every thing he touches? I won't waste another dime on any movie his name is attached too. ” - witqueen
Now You See Me
An FBI agent and an Interpol detective track a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances and reward their audiences with the money. (115 mins.)
“ And You Should..
Chick Pick, and if you go, go early to grab a good seat. Thoroughly entertaining, great plot twist, very well cast. I think this is a must see, and one to buy for posterity sake. If you don't see it, you have no one to blame but yourself. All ages will enjoy, few minor curse words nothing that isn't heard on tv. ” - witqueen
Man of Steel
Clark Kent, one of the last of an extinguished race disguised as an unremarkable human, is forced to reveal his identity when Earth is invaded by an army of survivors who threaten to bring the planet to the brink of destruction. (143 mins.)
“ Man pick, but will "steel" most women's hearts.
Pros: Good looking cast, interesting story line, but puns abounded in my head. Really? Keven Costner standing near a corn field? As well as Russell Crowe I just kept thinking, of Javert and waiting for him to break into song. There is a lot of big names in the movie, that I don't think was necessary to carry it, but even older actors need screen time, doesn't take away from the movie. I think my hubby enjoyed the special effects, we saw it in 3d, it isn't necessary. I liked it, don't feel the need to see it again. Though they set up for the sequel with placement of names throughout the town. cons: I found the settings and details a bit off, they should have paid more attention to the continuity. I'll give it 3.5 stars out of 5. It's not bad, it is just not great. ” - witqueen
In Paris in 1931, an orphan named Hugo Cabret who lives in the walls of a train station is wrapped up in a mystery involving his late father and an automaton. (126 mins.)
“ Wow Now that's 3d Done Right
I wish I had a home theater that I could enjoy this over and over again. Chick pick but Man loved it too. What a well done story line, draws you in and you don't want it to end. Gave me the same feelings AI did. Oscar worthy. I'd say its a must see and add it to your video library. ” - witqueen
An uptight FBI Special Agent is paired with a foul-mouthed Boston cop to take down a ruthless drug lord. (117 mins.)
“ Chick Pick, but Hubby laughed his way through as well.
Predictable but worth it for the laughs.Sure you've seen Melissa and Sandra play these roles before, but it works (again) with this movie. Our theater was sold out, so some of the lines were hard to hear over the laughter, but again..predictable story line, so you don't miss much.
There are a LOT of comediennes in this movie that haven't been seen in ages..(seriously Jane Curtain??) among some of my favorite others (Michael McDonald does a great job) Leave the kids at home though, this isn't appropriate and there are more F bombs dropped than necessary, but such is the way of Hollywood anymore, either blow something up for effect or overuse of the word *beep*. The writing is pretty good, the direction was probably as good as you could get with this cast. I would personally love to see what didn't make it to the final cut, as I'm sure with the talented cast, mayhem must have ensued on set.
It's an enjoyable night out, but I'm not looking forward to the dozen other previews that they screened with this movie. Hollywood, is out of ideas and scraping what's left at the bottom of the barrel. ” - witqueen
A fast-talking mercenary with a morbid sense of humor is subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers and a quest for revenge. (108 mins.)
“ Now that's my kind of movie!
Irreverent anti hero, with just enough heart to make you root for the "bad" guy. No one is innocent in this flick, and it is so inappropriate for kids. Leave them at home, and enjoy this and you won't regret it. ” - witqueen
Captain America: Civil War
Political interference in the Avengers' activities causes a rift between former allies Captain America and Iron Man. (147 mins.)
“ If I had one superpower it would be to stop Hollywood from making any more of these movies.
I almost walked out. I was that bored, didn't care, and except for the fact of the pending tab needing to be signed off on at our Movie Tavern, I would have left.
This movie is over rated, boring, and could be condensed to 15 minutes. But after sitting through this drek, with only two moments of maybe a giggle, and giving over to the man flick pick of our movie watching, I'll have to hope that his lack of enthusiasm for the film, will render us done with this Marvel Universe. ” - witqueen
Hoping to walk away with a massive fortune, a trio of thieves break into the house of a blind man who isn't as helpless as he seems. (88 mins.)
“ Chick Pick for Man
I don't understand the high ratings. Should have called the movie, Don't Hold Your Breath For A Cohesive Plot.
Here's the problem. If you want your movie to work in the suspense genre, you have to care about the characters. This movie is lacking that on all levels, not to mention the plot holes you can fall into. If you still want to watch this drek, you don't need to see it on the large screen, or pay for it. I almost walked out, toughed it out, I give it one phhhht. ” - witqueen
La La Land
A jazz pianist falls for an aspiring actress in Los Angeles. (128 mins.)
“ I don't walk out of many things, Les Miserable on Broadway, and had I paid money for this crap, it would be the second.
I wanted to like it, Award Winning! Who doesn't like Emma and Ryan together? But its utter *beep* I watched the opening number, figured oh, its set back twenty years or so, based on the number of old cars...oh wait..that's a new phone..what? It's a movie/with songs that tries too hard, you don't care about the characters, but good at showing why there are celebrities these days and no stars of old. Maybe the hype because they (Hollywood) tried to produce some original concept, and hopefully another director will forge ahead with someone else and behind the scenes to make a hit movie. This wasn't one of them sadly. ” - witqueen
The Rebel Alliance makes a risky move to steal the plans for the Death Star, setting up the epic saga to follow. (133 mins.)
“ Man Pick Birthday gift from me having to sit through 2 hours of it..with out an adult beverage.
It wasn't good, I hate that Lucasfilms sold out to Disney, and the plethora of regurgitated stories prequels et al on the rise. The only part worth watching was the last half hour, which barely redeemed the whole movie. I'd wash my hands of the whole franchise, except I know I'll have to sit through Episode VII as Carrie Fisher's last movie. ” - witqueen
