'' Movies can leave an indelible mark on our lives. We remember the way a person looks at another. We remember beautiful scenery or costumes. Some characters are so intriguing that we wish they were real so we could be their friends or family. ''

State of Play
When a congressional aide is killed, a Washington D.C. journalist starts investigating the case involving the congressman, his old college friend. (127 mins.)
“ '' In the mid 70's, due to the heat of the political environment at that time, the genre decided to go in the same direction. All The Presidents Men, brought to light the investigative strategies of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein and tackled the Watergate scandal from the perspective of the Washington Post. As audiences, we shared in the thrill of being able to follow the case as it unfolded, interviewing witnesses and piecing together clues in order to make a 10 O'clock print deadline. We were part of the chase, the scandal and always privy to the evidence necessary to solve the mystery at hand...that is until a new piece of evidence arose and bashed in all of our original assumptions.
State of Play may be the first film to pay homage to this Pakula classic while dually creating more poignant themes for today's political atmosphere. Crowe plays a reporter for the Washington Post and McAdams, an internet blogger, serving as our Woodward and Bernstein clones on the case of a Senator, Affleck, whose mistress succumbs to a rather untimely death VIA train tracks. To add insult to injury, it turns out that our reporter and senator are practically best friends. The plot unfolds, relationships falter and the real truth, to our pleasant surprise, blindsides us like a drunk driver on a narrow road.'' ” - fatimatullah

An American seminary student travels to Italy to take an exorcism course. (114 mins.)
“ The main concern of the film isn't horror, but faith. Specifically, it's all about one Michael Kovak (Colin O'Donoghue) trying to reconnect with his beliefs. Having studied to become a priest in an attempt to get away from the family business (his father, played by Rutger Hauer, is a mortician), he finds himself questioning that decision. The solution, according to Father Matthew (Toby Jones), is to attend an exorcism course in Rome (Pope John Paul II supposedly suggested every diocese should need an exorcist, and was said to have performed the rite personally in his younger years). The teacher, Father Xavier (Ciaran Hinds), recommends that Michael spend some time with a Welsh priest, Lucas Trevant (Hopkins), known among his peers for his unorthodox methods. And that's when things start getting interesting... ” - fatimatullah

“ What a fascinating, engrossing film this was. The art direction, costuming and makeup were extraordinary. The film switches from the 1970s and 1930s, 40s and 60s and you feel like you're time traveling. The direction by Michael Sucsy moves the story along at a perfect pace and Rachel Portman's music score beautifully complements the entire production. Lastly, and by no means least, are the brilliant performances by Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore, of which superlatives are inadequate to describe. This film was a real treat! '' ” - fatimatullah

Damned from the moment of their births, the brothers possess a gruesome talent for telekinesis - a power they use in the most horrific ways imaginable. As fellow students find to their cost. Can they be stopped? we shall see." ” - fatimatullah
The Adjustment Bureau
The affair between a politician and a contemporary dancer is affected by mysterious forces keeping the lovers apart. (106 mins.)
“ The film's charm is definitely in its explanation for things. The way the bureau works and how they function is a wonder in itself.
The story is very imaginative and different from the norm, which is always a fantastic change in pace when it comes to film. At the same time though, those who like having absolutely everything explained to them will probably be disappointed. The Adjustment Bureau explains enough to get the wheels in your brain turning and leaves some things open to your interpretation.
It is not a film to be taken seriously in any way, but it has an interesting idea at its heart: successful politicians are people who are unlucky in love, only a broken heart can give you the anger and hunger necessary for real political victory. It could well be true. ” - fatimatullah

A renowned professor is forced to reassess her life when she is diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer. (99 mins.)
“ ''Wit” It is brilliantly informative at both an intellectual and emotional level. Emma is totally convincing as a cancer patient, whether she is vomiting or hoarsely whispering poetry through a great veil of pain. I would recommend it to anyone, but especially to anyone close to someone dealing with cancer. For persons with cancer, watching this film can be an enlightening though painful journey of self-exploration.
* The scene in which the nurse sits on the patient’s bed in the middle of the night, sharing a popsicle, was so intimate.
* The “Grand Rounds” scene would be funny if it weren’t so sad. “That was very educational” Bearing says to the camera, “I am learning to suffer.” The contrast between the necessarily indelicate realism of the resusitation (Code Blue) scene with the ethereal beauty of the ‘runaway rabbit’ scene that precedes it is powerful. That scene of Bearing’s friend and mentor reading the classic childrens book will bring tears and remain in memory. ” - fatimatullah

Forrest Gump, while not intelligent, has accidentally been present at many historic moments, but his true love, Jenny Curran, eludes him. (142 mins.)
Plastic surgeon Dr. Mohammad Jawad returns to his native Pakistan to help those left horribly scarred by acid attacks. (40 mins.)
“ '' The film is a roller coaster ride of emotions. It starts off with Zakia a 39 year old woman, who says she cannot bear to look at her face any more. Her face haunts her and that’s why she has stopped looking into the mirror. She shows the audience her past photos and how she used to be, before she got disfigured by acid. She tells the audience that she used to love taking photographs of herself; when her mother used to buy her new clothes, she would wear them and get her photographs taken at the photo studio. However, now she feels terrible after looking at the photographs and how she used to be. A face filled with melancholy explains she does not want to see the light now that her face has to get used to remain covered with a veil and sunglasses, in order to hide the face from the society and people, so they don’t get scared.
It goes on to show different women briefly, all victims of acid attack and all having one question on their lips “why me?” It is a powerful question and certainly something that should be pondered upon. Why were these women targeted? Why is it that there are over 100 reported cases of acid attack in Pakistan this year? What was their fault that they got so brutally punished? Rukhsana, a 23 year old woman and another protagonist of the documentary, also had the same question in her mind. Why was she punished like this and why did she become a victim of acid attack? Her husband threw acid on her face; her sister-in-law threw gasoline on her and her mother-in-law set her on fire. These women had no hope and thought they couldn’t return to normal life, but due to Dr. Jawad’s efforts, these women got a new lease on life; especially Zakia who had a reconstructive facial surgery done, which helped her shed the veil, make like her face again and bring happiness back to a certain extent.
Saving Face is an emotion-driven documentary which will make you cry, or at least get you teary eyes, as you can’t help but feel bad for these women and sympathise with them. There are many instances and painful moments in the film which will leave you with mixed emotions. You will be angry and sad at the same time. One such moment is when Rukhsana finds out that she’s pregnant with the same man’s child who attacked her with acid and because of this; she can’t have her reconstructive surgery. She becomes sad, but happy at the same time; thinking that maybe this child will bring her happiness. She can’t even leave her husband and family, because she has no other way of supporting her children and she doesn’t want them to suffer. She is stuck…
Take out 52 minutes of your time from your day, to watch this gem of a documentary, because Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy and Daniel Jung have done a good job. Granted that it could have been made better or better explained – like if Rukhsana’s sister-in-law and mother-in-law conspired to set her on fire, why weren’t they arrested by the police or why weren’t they featured in the film? Or they could have showed how the other acid attack victims were doing, in a bit more detail than they did. Regardless, this is a film that shows female strength and courage; how these women, even after facing such harsh and cruel treatment, managed to overcome that and living their lives. How after her reconstructive surgery, Zakia, dressed in bright red clothes and no burka or veil in sight, walked confidently on the street and even smiled; as if nothing had happened. That gives out a strong message that, even if something bad happened, your life shouldn’t stop. Like the age old English idiom “time and tide wait for no man”, one has to keep moving forward under any circumstances.'' * ” - fatimatullah

“ one of the reviews that says enough:
''It is one of the most philosophical movies. The trip is not between places but between identities. An existential journey into the great unknown of the soul. Some say we take ourselves everywhere we go. This movie tries to tell us instead that we *find* ourselves in those places, we discover a new way of seeing with our own eyes and, when we leave, a part of us stays in that place forever. Returning there is a way of visiting ourselves, like we would an old friend...
There's so many layers, so many subtle metaphors, so much poetry in the imagery and storytelling, that despite being such a straightforward story you can't help feeling like you're walking through a maze, a labyrinth of emotions and thoughts, where present, past and future merge into a vast uplifting eternity.
There's a fiction within a fiction here: a book within a book within a movie. A lie within a lie: a poet within a reader, within a spectator, within a person. This dilution between fiction and reality and between the actor and the audience often occurs, but rarely is it ever a theme, rarely is it ever presented as a question to the audience and rarely so beautifully answered. This game of mirrors will leave you full of wonder and hungry for life.
There couldn't be a better outcome for a story that starts with a suicide attempt... There's too many reasons to watch this movie and too little space to review it properly unfortunately... The scenery of Lisbon, the universal anguish of the characters, the excruciating portrayal of the Portuguese dictatorship, the lessons it offers on some of the most important questions one can ask oneself... Do yourself a favor and go see it! '' ” - fatimatullah

After spending the night together on the night of their college graduation Dexter and Em are shown each year on the same date to see where they are in their lives. They are sometimes together, sometimes not, on that day. (107 mins.)
“ One day means 24 hours out of a person's life, but that can be a long, momentous and rather depressing time.
One Day is giving us a look in on the lives of Emma and Dexter each July 15, beginning in 1988 and ending in 2006.
I have not read David Nicholls' book, but as I read, the point of the book is that each chapter gives us a snapshot update of the same two people on the same day every year: 15th July.
Emma and Dexter spend the night together on this date in 1988, their graduation day at Edinburgh University. They never become a couple, but the story follows their twin lives on this day over the next 20 years: sometimes together, sometimes poignantly apart.
their relationship has some sweet touches.
Emma is a talented writer-to-be, though her inability to leave Dexter behind, despite having virtually zero reason to keep him, is baffling. She allows him to destroy her life on a continual basis, and it would be much easier to understand if there was even the slightest spark between the two. Instead, she only becomes a necessity in Dexter's life once the need to have her there is all that's left for him. He is never appreciates her as anything more than a shoulder to cry on when he's feeling low. Essentially, he uses her.

“ Because this is a silent film, the camera tells the story for us. Here we see a shot of the camera looking up at the man, this gives the audience an impression of he looks nervous, scared even, maybe as if he has done something he regrets, it shows that in the story, he is the superior person. We do not know if he is responsible for the situation but he certainly acts like it and whoever or whatever he is looking down at, must be on the ground for a reason. ” - fatimatullah
