My Little List Of Horrors: A Guide For Halloween Movie-Watchingby witster18 | created - 11 Oct 2011 | updated - 12 Oct 2011 | Public
This list contains some of my favorite Horror films. I've seen every movie on the list. I've also omitted MANY good horror films. Some were omitted be because they were more on the fringe of the genre(Monster Squad, Shaun of the Dead, Highway to Hell, FIre in the Sky, Etc), others were omitted because I just didn't enjoy them as much. Hopefully, you'll enjoy this list and be able to use it as a rental guide this Halloween season. Thanks for reading. I think I could recommend every movie on the list. Here's a long list of omitted films(most just didn't make the cut - a small number3-4 of them I haven't seen, but are on my watchlist - some of these are good films): Angel Heart, Dreamscape Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2('85), The Last Exorcism, Audition, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, An American Werewolf in London, Carriers, The Proposition, Basket Case, The Haunting in Conneticut, Piranha '10, Aliens(more of sci-fi, but included original) Army of Darkness(the only evil dead i left out)SLeepwalkers, Sleepaway Camp, Ravenous, Bad Taste, Firestarter, Arachnophobia, Hatchet 2, Infestation, Dead Snow, Timber Falls, The Dead Zone, Flatliners, Midnight Meat Train, Blood Creek, Slither, Dead Ringers, Screamers, Tremors, The Sixth Sense, I spit on Your Grave(orig), I spit on Your grave('10), A Serbian Film, Shaun of the Dead, ALL OF THE SAW FILMS, Last House on the Left(orig), Last House on the Left(remake), Dawn of the Dead, [REC], My Bloody Valentine(remake), A Tale of Two Sisters, Fire In The Sky, Crazies('10), Teeth, Henry:Portrait of the Serial Killer, Beyond Re-Animator, Bride of Re-Animator, Bad Leutinant(sp?), Demons, Horror of Dracula, Dagon, Nightbreed, Pet Semetary 2, The Prowler, Frankenstein Unbound, Nightwatch, Lord of Illusions, Martyrs, The Fury, Cronos, Rampage, Frogs, Shocker, Spiral, The Bride, Wolfen, The Puppet Masters, ETC, Etc, etc... There were even some choices from fine directors that didn't make the cut... some of the living dead series is not on here, Michael Mann's' The Keep and Brian DePalma's Raising Cain didn't make the cut - and I love those directors. I wanted the list to feature straight forward horror films. I wanted every film on the list to have that 'scary' element, and not depend on shock/turture, or some gimmick(I'm sure I left in some biased exceptions). Hope you enjoy - let me know.

R | 93 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Horror
A troubled writer moves into a haunted house after inheriting it from his aunt.

R | 89 min | Horror, Thriller
An unearthly fog rolls into a small coastal town exactly 100 years after a ship mysteriously sank in its waters.

Alien brain parasites, entering humans through the mouth, turn their host into a killing zombie. Some teenagers start to fight against them.
Votes: 16,674 | Gross: $0.59M
Loved this one for it's homage to the 50's horror flicks. Has some humor, gore, and the occasional scare. Great one-liners too, "The good news is your dates are here - the bad news is they're dead".:) My Score - 8
6. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
R | 91 min | Horror
Several people are hunted by a cruel serial killer who kills his victims in their dreams. While the survivors are trying to find the reason for being chosen, the murderer won't lose any chance to kill them as soon as they fall asleep.
Votes: 170,674 | Gross: $25.50M
Nice try on the remake, but the original here has good scare value, and good music too. My Score - 8
7. Friday the 13th (1980)

A group of camp counselors are stalked and murdered by an unknown assailant while trying to reopen a summer camp which, years before, was the site of a child's drowning.
Votes: 96,052 | Gross: $39.75M
This edged its' way onto the list for many different reasons. The music, the scare value, and the fact that it really kick-started the early 80's horror surge. My Score - 5
8. Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)
R | 87 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller
Mrs. Voorhees is dead, and Camp Crystal Lake is shut down, but a camp next to the infamous place is stalked by an unknown assailant.
Votes: 46,418 | Gross: $21.72M
The best of the series, and one of the most under-rated scary films of all-time. The plot twists turned-off some, but I found the sheer scare value and improvement in production values over the original made this a good horror-flick. My Score - 7

A crew in Antarctica finds a neighboring camp destroyed and its crew dead. Whatever killed them is nowhere to be found, unless it's hidden in plain sight.

So good that I'm very hesitant when it comes to seeing the newest version/prequel. The music is exceptional, the effects were ahead of their time, and the film is genuinely scary. The story is interesting and the acting is top notch. My Score - 8.5
10. Scream (1996)
R | 111 min | Horror, Mystery
A year after the murder of her mother, a teenage girl is terrorized by a new killer, who targets the girl and her friends by using horror films as part of a deadly game.

11. The Brood (1979)
R | 92 min | Horror, Sci-Fi
A man tries to uncover an unconventional psychologist's therapy techniques on his institutionalized wife, amidst a series of brutal murders.

12. The Changeling (1980)
R | 107 min | Horror
A man staying at a secluded historical mansion finds himself being haunted by the presence of a spectre.
Proof that you don't need blood, guts, and tits to make a good horror flick. Solid entry. My Score - 8
13. Trick 'r Treat (2007)
R | 82 min | Comedy, Horror, Thriller
Five interwoven stories that occur on Halloween: An everyday high school principal has a secret life as a serial killer; a college virgin might have just met the guy for her; a group of teenagers pull a mean prank; a woman who loathes the night has to contend with her holiday-obsessed husband; and a mean old man meets his match with a demonic, supernatural trick-or-treater.
A really good directorial debut here that pays homage to the season. Not very scary, but just so much fun. A new Halloween staple that nears PG-13 all ages access. Trick 'r Treat tackles nearly every Halloween theme, and does it quite successfully. My Score - 7.5
14. Paranormal Activity (2007)

R | 106 min | Horror, Thriller
When a teenager learns that his next door neighbour is a vampire, no one will believe him.
Votes: 48,790 | Gross: $24.92M
Another instance of 'who needs a remake'. That's why they make remakes, because no directors(at least not many) are putting out original, scary movies anymore. My Score - 6.5
16. The Evil Dead (1981)
NC-17 | 85 min | Horror
Five friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons.
Votes: 158,777 | Gross: $2.40M

R | 84 min | Comedy, Horror
The lone survivor of an onslaught of flesh-possessing spirits holes up in a cabin with a group of strangers while the demons continue their attack.
Votes: 126,986 | Gross: $5.92M

Definitely more of a horror film than any other film in the series. Over-rated, but good. My Score - 7.5
21. Near Dark (1987)
R | 94 min | Action, Crime, Drama
A small-town farmer's son reluctantly joins a traveling group of vampires after he is turned on by a beautiful drifter.
Votes: 28,157 | Gross: $3.37M
Not scary, but gets points for flying under the radar. Say what you want, but I'd rather watch this than '30 Days of Night', or any film in the 'Twilight Series'. The bar scene alone is worth a My Score - 7

A teenage boy and his friends face off against a mysterious grave robber known only as the Tall Man, who keeps a lethal arsenal of terrible weapons with him.
Votes: 26,225 | Gross: $11.99M
The first is the best. The original phantasm is creepy, disturbing, and genuinely scary. The concepts were original, and the B-production values only added to the intrigue. My Score - 7.5
23. Phantasm II (1988)
R | 97 min | Action, Fantasy, Horror
Mike, now released from a psychiatric hospital, continues his journey to stop the evil Tall Man from his grim work.
Votes: 11,127 | Gross: $7.28M
Not a bad follow-up. Better than the Hellraiser follow-ups anyway. Phantasm 2 increases the production value over the original, but isn't quite as good as the original IMO. My Score - 6.5
24. Re-Animator (1985)

Votes: 164,592 | Gross: $25.03M
Sure they'll be some argument as to if these are really horror films - to me, there's no question, and they're under-rated horror films at that. Loved what both directors accomplished here. I think the score gets a boost by the two-film, homage format that really hit the mark for me. My Score - 9
28. Let Me In (I) (2010)

Besides the fact that I think the Saw series is over-rated - I included The Collector because of some great music and style that sets it apart from the Saw series. Watch out for Jerome Dillon's music in future horror films. This one surprised me. My Score - 6.5

While Sheriff Brackett and Dr. Loomis hunt for Michael Myers, a traumatized Laurie is rushed to hospital, and the serial killer is not far behind her.
Votes: 58,197 | Gross: $25.53M
So funny how this film gets bashed when it's scarier and better than any of the Halloween, CHainsaw, or Nightmare on Elm Street remakes. It's not great, but it does have geniune scare value. My Score - 6.5

Two criminals and their hostages unknowingly seek temporary refuge in a truck stop populated by vampires, with chaotic results.
Votes: 243,504 | Gross: $25.75M
Will always be one of the most original horror films for being over-the-top, and for it's mid-film 180 degree turn from an interesting story about two criminals on the run, to a furious vampire action flick. Quentin's best performance(he usually stinks and knows it). Clooney is great. My Score - 8.5
46. The Wolfman (2010)

I think this is another one of those 'scariest films of the last decade' movies. The Mothman Prophecies draws on some local legends AND some true events. It capitalizes on some top-notch actors in the biz and genuinely disturbs the viewer from beginning to end. My Score - 8.5

The Deep really capitalizes on it's underwater filming to create tension, and it's isolated locales to do the same. Much scarier than you would imagine. I always liked this movie and there is no doubt it belongs in this genre. This is an extremely eerie film even though it's subject matter doesn't even fit into the genre. My Score - 7.5

Here's a template on how scary a film can be without gore. Great movie. The look of the film really adds to the realism, and while the sequel is different and not as good, it was probably the first left off the list. My Score - 9
