I'm not going to bother listing the stuff people always list. you already know Evil Dead is awesome. you know Alien is a masterpiece. the films here are either under-appreciated, non-traditional, or just rather off the beaten path and messed up. read on if you're looking for something that will actually get under your skin and chill you.

1. Sauna (2008)

my perfect horror film. one of the most chilling, thought-provoking endings I've seen in a while. this is that rare kind of thinking-person's horror film that only comes around once in a blue moon. beautiful, stunning cinematography keeps your eyes glued to the screen. superb.

an amazingly-crafted, genuinely scary, thought-provoking Filipino film. it's the first Filipino movie I've ever seen, and one of the best horror flicks in recent memory!
3. YellowBrickRoad (2010)

1940: the entire population of Friar, New Hampshire walked up a winding mountain trail, leaving everything behind. 2008: the first official expedition into the wilderness attempts to solve the mystery of the lost citizens of Friar.
raw, gritty psychological horror at its finest. a lot of people didn't like it but I enjoyed it immensely... give it a shot.
4. Silent Hill (2006)

one continuous camera shot builds some pretty wicked tension. this original Spanish version has a more solid structure than the remake with Elizabeth Olsen, in my opinion.
10. The Tunnel (I) (2011)

distributed as a free torrent file from their website, this handi-cam film has good tension and acting. probably the best handi-cam movie I've seen. even if you're not a fan of that style, check it out, because it's not used in an overwhelming way.
11. Creep (I) (2004)

this will make you think twice about taking the subway at night. unique and absorbing.
12. Dead Snow (2009)

low-budget sci-fi thriller that makes for an interesting psychological study. good tension throughout, and even though the ending leaves something to be desired, I definitely enjoyed it.
31. Dread (2009)

Three college students set out to document what other people dread the most. However, one of the three turns out to secretly be a sadistic psychopath who uses this knowledge to gruesomely torture the subjects.
based on a Clive Barker short story, this truly horrifying tale plays on some of our deepest fears. it's the darkness and horror of human nature-- my favorite!

I happen to be a fan of handi-cam films done right, and this one is done VERY right.

This movie was really disturbing and frightening on a few levels. The premise sounds weird at first, but it's executed so well.

I didn't know what to expect from this little movie, but I was very pleasantly surprised. The acting was really impressive and the concept is definitely unique.
39. The Innkeepers (2011)

It's not a perfect movie. The premise is silly, the story is never fully fleshed out. But I have to say they build some great suspense. It's worth watching for sure.
40. The New Daughter (2009)

Wow, I wasn't expecting much from this but it was actually very scary! The story is certainly something I'd never seen before. I really liked it.

scary! I was expecting something much cheesier, based on the budget, but this is a superbly suspenseful flick. definitely worth watching.

for our "heroes," things just go from bad, to worse, to straight up awful. this one should make you cringe.

I love period horror, and this zombie film is set in the Civil War era.

equal parts heartbreaking and repulsive, this movie questions how far parents would go to spend a few more days with their dead child.
