A dying man, his estranged son, a caring nurse and a guilty wife...A cocaine addicted woman who meets a kind cop (John C. Reily), her father is a television host for a show where highly intelligent kids try to answer the questions & their pushy parents who don't care about them; a man who was once one of those kids and his pathetic life. Engagingly real characters, deeply moving, awful life circumstances for everyone, yet manages to leave you feeling hope. At the moment I saw this film, I felt it to be the best movie I had ever seen. Tom Cruise in his most believable role ever, Jason Robards who at the time was dying of cancer - plays a man dying of cancer, Julianne Moore, William H. Macy, Philip Seymour Hoffman, *beep* brilliant cast.

“ Al Pacino won an oscar for his role in this film. A young Chris O'Donnel is the 'scholarship' kid at the school for the rich pissant crybaby sons of rich douchebags, therefore expendable, even though the most honorable person there. During holiday break, he accepts the job to 'babysit' Pacino, a blind Lt.Colonel (who caused his own blindness) who is impossible to get along with and whose family hates him, apparently. He takes Charlie (ODonnel) to the city, where blind Pacino test drives a Ferrari and speaks to the cop who pulls him over for speeding and never guesses he's blind. I don't want to spoil, so I'll just say their trip gets incredibly intense and sad.
In the meantime Charlie is in trouble at school because he won't snitch and there is an 'investigation' and tribunal in which probably he will be the only one kicked out - until Pacino shows up on Charlies behalf and gives the performance of a decade at least. Outstandingly emotional, touching, intense, and the performance of Phillip Seymour Hoffman as the snot nosed mean spoiled teenager had me expecting him to just be an awful person in every role he played for a long time. 10 stars. ” - eurorebecca

“ I did not want to see this movie originally, because I don't really like old period pieces and I didn't understand what it was about. My husband put the movie in anyway against my protests, and I was very happy he did. A boy who can smell things others can't, and enjoys it all, good or bad, is taken under the wing of (Dustin Hoffman) a perfume maker. The boy tries to make perfumes out of almost anything, animals, the sweat of a woman. Much to the dismay of Hoffman. Anyway, long story short, the boy is driven obsessively to make the most incredible scent in creation, taken from the bodies of women. However, many do not want him rolling wax onto their bodies and peeling it off, so he kills them, shaves off their hair and takes their scent. As he gets closer to his grand finale you can see that even the partial perfume has a kind of power over people. One wealthy man, knowing that his daughter must be next, takes her to a convent type place in the mountains, however, the boy follows the trail of her scent. After killing the girl, going to jail, and putting some of his final perfume onto himself, even the dead girls father begs forgiveness and calls him 'son'. Unbelievable and incredible.
