My Top 500 Favorite Films, For What It's Worth.

Not a list of the "best films of all-time". Just my favorite films, nothing more. The movies that I never grow tire of watching. A wide-ranging selection, from little-seen works to box office blockbusters, from Bergman to Spielberg. A good deal of these films are from my childhood; these particular films are in my blood, so to speak.

Expansion: I have recently decided to expand this list from 250 films to 500. I wanted to give myself a definite limit and then try not to exceed it so as to discipline myself when choosing which films to add, and 500 was as good of a number as any.

I must say, this augmentation was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be. I have not viewed some of these films in such a long time, so there will certainly be an impreciseness to it. I've had to go from memory for the most part.

In addition to the expansion, I have also included many additional lists in the comment sections pertinent to that particular film, like my favorite films from the director of that film, or from a selected actor or actress from that film, etc.
*Also, in an effort to include the films of a director or actor/actress that I have not otherwise had the opportunity to but would like to, I have occasionally included lists completely unrelated to the film they are listed under. These lists have been marked so: [UNRELATED] - 11/17/13.
**Please note that I am only ranking the films of a particular artist that I have liked, even if only marginally. So if for whatever reason I did not like a film, I have not ranked it. Also, in case you were wondering, the dividing line (-----) in some of these lists is there to separate films that are in my Top 8000 (still in progress) from films that are not. So to what degree I like films listed below said indicator line varies greatly. Some I still liked very much, other only barely.

“ I first watched this movie way back when I was in the 3rd grade, shocking as that may sound. Needless to say, it had a profound effect on me. No, it didn't "corrupt my childhood", but it did change my perception of the world around me, that's for sure, and maybe even kept me alive. Who knows...

“ As a whole, the book is better. But the movie actually only covers the first half of the book, and in my opinion, improves upon it --- but I so wish that they would have filmed the second half of the book, with the same cast and all. But it's too late for that now, and was probably way past their budget back then.

Still, this movie was such a joyful experience, and still is; so full of magic and wonder -- AND NO CG !!!
You know, I actually consider it child abuse for any respectable parent not to ensure that their child watches this film and/or reads the book! They are both healthy nourishment for any child's imagination. They were for mine.

As for Wolfgang Petersen, his career seems to have ended, his last film being the poorly received 2006 remake of the 'The Poseidon Adventure', titled simply "Poseidon". I guess that they thought if they left off "Adventure", no one would realize that it was a remake, or that it sucked. But Wolfgang did have a couple of other successful works, chiefly 'Das Boot' (1981), his most celebrated film, and the under-appreciated 'In the Line of Fire' (1993). ” - Mister_Wolf

6) Edge of Tomorrow (2014) - Basically, "Starship Troopers" meets "Groundhogs Day", right? I don't mind; in fact, I had the idea a long time ago of, instead of just remaking classic films, taking two completely unrelated film premises and combining them into one new story. Then you would at least get something semi-original. Like, say, instead of remaking 'The Terminator', why not combine that premise with, say '12 Monkeys' and you get ... um, well, '12 Monkeys' with a cyborg... anyways, forget that pairing, the possibilities are endless. But getting back to 'Edge of Tomorrow', it's a good, exciting film. But!...let me get this straight; using my video game logic here, which I use often in real world situations: It takes Cage what we can only surmise is hundreds, maybe even thousands of lives to get past all the early levels; to defeat all the minor baddies, learn all the secrets/clues, collect all the hidden treasure, ect., before finally making it to the last level -usually the hardest level in video games- to face off against the Omega/last boss. But now Cage has no extra lives and must defeat this whole level in one try... and he does!? ONE TRY, like this was "Star Fox 64" (Andross was such a puss) or something; after failing so many times in earlier stages! And then he still gets to reset on top of it all, victory in tact! I don't know, kinda sucky last level if you ask me, but not enough to override the enjoyment that came before it. 'Memento' meets 'Oldboy'? No, that one won't really work either...

To be honest, I would say that I was a cross between young Ana and young Pip from 'Great Expectations', so it's no wonder why I love these two films so much.

I think posterity will view both films more favorably.
13) War of the Worlds (2005) - His most underrated film, after 'The BFG'. The 1953 film is better, sure, but I found this one very entertaining, and I enjoyed the cameos from Gene Barry and Ann Robinson. I think this was one of those films that people "wanted" to hate before they even saw it (I was probably one myself), so they found reasons not to like it.

17) Here Comes the Groom (1951) - Innocent, enjoyable entertainment. The Capra charm was not completely dried up yet.
18) Broadway Bill (1934) - I liked the story, the performances and the cute relationship between Broadway Bill and his best friend, a chicken. But the ending undermines much of the good will that came before it when Capra decided to incorporate a practice that was all too common back then and employed a trip wire to stumble Broadway Bill, or perhaps it was a stunt horse. I don't know. But whether or not the horse in question was Broadway Bill or another horse is beside the point. It was a very unnecessary scene that could have been handled differently, and it puts a damper on an otherwise fun movie. So even though I do recommend the film, I felt the need to include this caveat.
