One of the very best WWII movies. The Germans speak german and they are not the typical German caricatures but ordinary boys and men.
Most briliant part was the scene where the Russians attack a well hidden German fortification in open field. Also, the city scenes were well shot, giving an idea of the reality of war, in this case fighting for every room and every house.
But than they lose the battle and they start te feel the impact of the enormous distances and the scorcing cold Russian winters. You don't just walk home, there's more to that. ” - Kobus Klontenkoker

*Mild Spoiler Alert*
This movie is a must see for everyone who likes WWII movies. Not the high hollywood shoot 'n scoot movies, but decent acting of a very good cast. A few flaws in the story, p.e. when they return with some of their squad dressed up as russians they simply could have taken off their clothes and share parts of the other's German uniforms.
And a prussian officer not knowing how to reload a MP44 is highly unlikely since they all had a military training in which they were tought the general concept of reloading a gun. And he was in the field for quit a time at that point in the movie
However, the story is good and depicts the German army at the moment they start to lose campaigns. Not every German was a nazi, not every officer bad (or good), not every soldier impressed by rank. ” - Kobus Klontenkoker

In 1942, Britain sends a group of British-trained Czech commandos to Prague to assassinate SS-General Reinhard Heydrich, head of the Nazi security services. (118 mins.)
In 1942, a group of Czech para's traind by the British Army is assigned to kill Heydrich, the butcher of Prague. Heydrich also was chairman of the Wannsee conference, but that was not a known fact to the Allies at that time. Being the butcher of Prague though was enought the have him assassinated, regardless the cost.
The attempt succeeds. But one of the local resistence members helping the para's started talked to the Germans in order to save his family. He helped the Germans by tricking a captured resistance member in telling the hide out of the para's.
Heroic story, but the movie is a bit slow in telling it. The storyline is imho too thin to make a 2 hour movie without giving depth to the characters. Te special effects are not bad for 1975, but there are a few remarks to make. For example the big differences in priming time of the handgranates, the sound of the guns, the way these well trained para's take cover when shooting the Germans.
Anyways, the story is absolutely worth telling. ” - Kobus Klontenkoker
The World War II phase of the career of the controversial American general, George S. Patton. (172 mins.)
Third or fourth time I've seen this movie. I like the story, I like the actors playing Patton and Bradley, the sarcastic humor "they will lose their fear for the Germans. By god I hope they don't lose their fear for me".
I doubt that even an abrupt man like Patton would say at every possible occasion that he wants to beat Monty. Off course everyone knew, but the movie makes it almost look like a childish I wanna I have to I'm gonna. Hmmm...
Patton's character symbolises the mutual exclusivity between achieving obvious goals in an efficient and effective way and politics. ” - Kobus Klontenkoker

Sink the Bismarck!
The World War II story of the British Navy's effort to defeat Nazi Germany's most powerful warship. (97 mins.)
First seen this movie some 15 years ago. Liked it than, still like it.
Within the context of the time the movie was made, he special effects are quite ok. You can see by the explosions and fires that they are models, but it doesn't bother too much.
Not knowing what time it is in the control room of this kind of big operation seems highly unlikely. Luitjens is depicted as a zealous fanatic while in fact he doubted the chances of Bismarck's succes and did not like the nazi's (the movie mixes "nazi's" with "germans", a common mistake). When Hitler visited the ship, Luitjens gave the traditional naval salute iso the nazi salute.
Why they shot the ruther from port, while in fact it was shot on the starboard side, is unclear. Also, there were no planes shot down by the Bismarck during the attack.

A German submarine is boarded by disguised American submariners trying to capture their Enigma cipher machine. (116 mins.)
“ 21-03-12 (R)
Why rape history this way, big WHY?!?
For example, the Enigma and the code book were not first captured by te US but by the British. So the whole story is just a fictional tale in a WW II setting.
Thereby, the factual errors are annoying (spoiler alert):
-the german landfighter could never have reached the sub. It could hardly make it to England, less than half as far away;
- depth charges exploding just a meter away from the sub would without any doubt immediately destroy the sub;
- how could they have a color picture of the Enigma before having captured one?
- the Germans had exquisite means of communication (what the movie was all about, btw) and were not one procent as stupid as depicted. They would have been informed the moment the support submarine would arrive. No message means no supply submarine, so they would never have let them approache their boat;
- every U-boat captain (and I think in fact every U-boat sailor) would have noticed immediately that the American German sub is not a real one. It is like putting a spoiler on the trunk of a Chevrolet to make it look like a Porsche.
To quote a veteran WW II U-boat commander: "They got one thing right in the movie. There were U-Boats in the North Atlantic during the Second World War." ” - Kobus Klontenkoker

He meets a japaneese boy and meets Basie, who in no way can be trusted.
Lot of loops in the movie (bicycle, choir, I surrender), maybe too many. The character shifts of Jim are not always logic. The plane attacks look nice, although I don't understand why they keep machinegunning an empty runway and why you can see bombs bouncing off the ground. ” - Kobus Klontenkoker

Jews rise up in the Warsaw Ghetto against the Nazis in 1943. (177 mins.)
Three actors I don't really like gathered in one movie: Voight, Schwimmer and Sobieski. Casting therefore brings this movie down one star to 7 for me. Voight hardly has any german physiques, Schwimmer -however great in friends- lacks just that bit of emotion to make his character believable and Sobieski is a not the kind of actress I like, a bit to melodramatic.
Topic of the movie is great, fighting back nazi's regardless of the consequences because the consequences of doing nothing are certain and much worse. The group starts with small arm attacks on random germans. They power up to stop a razzia squad. Therefore the army plans an attack on the now much bigg group(s), which is bravely countered. Twice. But when the artillery comes and shoots down practically everything, it ends in the sewers. But step by step they get weaker, in the end forced to leave. And leavin when surrounded turns out to be almost impossible.
A bit disturbing how the jeweish council tries to cut losses their way. But why didn't they understand that paying for your own captivity means that as soon as the money runs out they will be elminated anyway? It is stalling time, but it is also leveraging wealth to the germans. That money could have been spent so much better. Talking from the sideline here. ” - Kobus Klontenkoker

The ventriloquist with his living doll was a nice surprise throughout the movie. Brave by humor. Beautiful Erika Marozsán plays a nice Haya, but is obvious not a singer in real life.
People like the character Gens playing a role during the war which is almost unbelievable to imagine.
Lot's of double layers in this movie, nice for the meta thinkers.
