Best Of, 'American' Martial Arts Movies

Now while there is absolutely no argument that Hong Kong rules the Action/Martial Arts Genre, The West has also produced some of their own gems as well. Taking cues and inspiration from the East, here are my favorite martial arts films from the West.

Oh and when i say "American Martial Arts Movies." I really mean Marital arts films NOT made by Hong Kong, or any other country from Asia, i mean from America & Europe. They are films made by major American or European Studios starring western and sometimes even eastern actors and actresses.

Oh and im NOT including Boxing films on this list, they deserve a list of their own.

***Be Sure to give my "Top 250 Greatest Martial Arts Movies of All-Time" List a View afterwards: http://www.imdb.com/list/QPyJ64Q5L5U/

In it i attempt to gather and list the all time best from the East, West, and Back again.***

“ The first and still the BEST, Chinese And American Joint Produced Martial Arts Film.

In 2004, Enter the Dragon was deemed "culturally significant" and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.

Its also worth noting all Three of the famous "Dragon Brothers" make appearances, Jackie Chan as Han's henchman in the cave, Biao Yuen as a Tournament Fighter, & Sammo Hung as the Shaolin fighter Bruce sparred with at the very beginning of the movie.

Their appearances are highlighted in this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Z6z1b-q9u8

TRIVIA:
In their one scene together, Lee actually struck Jackie Chan in the face with one of the fighting sticks he used. He immediately apologized and insisted that Chan would work on all of his movies after that, but he died before he could keep the promise. ” - Eric-Scissorhands

“ "Chained by Violence. Freed by Music."

This is by far Jet Li's finest acting performance. The only film in his career that demands more range as a "serious actor" than anything hes starred in before or since... And he pulls it off quite well. The Martial Arts arent bad either, Woo Ping And Jet collaborates once again to choreograph some of the most vicious and exciting fight sequences produced.

The supporting cast is all star aswell and hits the ball out of the park. Bob Hoskins, Morgan Freeman, & Kerry Condon were all gave great performances. ” - Eric-Scissorhands

“ Quentin Tarantino Pays "homage" to Asian Cinema. I spotted SO MANY "references" from other Movies in the two Volumes.... from Lady Snowblood, Sex & Fury, The Streetfighter (Sonny Chiba even appears in the film), Clan of the White Loutus, The Green Hornet, to the Game of Death. It was really fun as a fan of Asian Cinema AND Mr. Tarantino to see all these "tributes" in one film. It was a blast to say the least, Not to mention its got one of the greatest soundtracks of any movie ever. The anime sequence was awesome too, it was the icing to an already tasty cake.

I consider Both "Volumes" one long Martial-Arts-Spaghetti-Western-Revenge EPIC. ” - Eric-Scissorhands

“ Great Fight Choreography, Jaw Dropping Stunts & Action Sequences, & Bad English Dubbing. This film has all the elements of a typical Hong Kong Action Classic.

Because that's precisely what this is, Well not really, its got all the elements except actual Hong Kong Actors. Like Ong Bak did before, French director Pierre Morel took cues from Action Classics such as Jackie Chan's Police Story Series and paste em on here with their own special twist to create a thrilling, action packed, flick that's definitely worth your time. Its got it all, "free running," (which Jackie Chan popularized in the 80's and early 90s.) gun fights, hand to hand combat, gangs, car hopping, fence jumping, and the mandatory fight with an unnaturally tall enemy. (well in this case Cyril takes on a tall fat guy.)

Cyril Raffaelli who i was already familiar with prior, thanks to his phenomenal fight scene with Jet Li in Kiss of the Dragon is definitely a rising star to keep an eye out for. This is the first flick ive seen him in as a lead and i hope to see more. ” - Eric-Scissorhands

Director: Paul Greengrass
“ The type of martial arts used by Jason Bourne is a combination of Filpino Kali along with Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do. Krav Maga is widely mistaken as being used in this film. It is not, as Matt Damon was trained by Kali/Jeet Kune Do expert Jeff Imada. The film's uncredited fight coordinators are Damon Caro and Jonathan Eusebio. Both are trained in Kali and Jeet Kune Do and neither are trained in the Krav Maga. ” - Eric-Scissorhands

“ These Undisputed sequels just keep getting better and better.

This is a damn good fight film, great choreography, decent acting & a simple enough story to follow through. BUT it lack that certain "something" to truly rank it up there with the Greats. Like most American Martial Arts Flicks they make it seem like the whole point of martial arts is to watch two sweaty muscle heads beat the crap out of each other in the ring, when it is NOT. What American MA films should emphasize more is that martial arts wasnt/isnt a tool created soley to beat someone to death with.

Take Jet Li's Fearless, Jackie Chans Legend of Drunken Master, Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon, & Donnie Yen's Ip Man, what makes these films truly great Martial Arts CLASSICS is not only are the fight choreography phenomenal, but they focus on the philosophy of Martial Arts, in other words the true definition, the essence and the history of why it is called "Martial ARTS" and not "beating someone to death with your fists while your sweaty and shirtless." It was made originally for self defense and has since evolved into a way of life and now into a sport.

Other than that, this is a GREAT, great film, very entertaining and has confirmed my suspicions that Scott Adkins is the "New" Van Damme. Check it out. ” - Eric-Scissorhands

“ Or as I refer to it, "The MMA Kid."

Because thats what it essentially is. Another Karate Kid remake without the Karate, instead replaced with Mixed Martial Arts, a soundtrack full of top 40 crap, and no shortage of rich spoiled white kids trying to be Tyler Durden.

Dont get me wrong now, its better than the Original Karate Kid, alot more realistic really and believable than that 80s nostalgia trip.

*NOTE This film would have made it higher up if it DIDNT include a track by 2 of the biggest HACKS in music history lil wayne, Soulja Bitch and for having such a *beep* soundtrack in general. ” - Eric-Scissorhands
