I started a movie binge just before the Spring Holidays. It started totally by chance. I hadn't rented anything in months, but an unrecognised reference I'd made to War Games started a chain reaction.
The comments are just off the cuff reactions made after the fact, but attempting to recall initial impressions upon viewing or reviewing the film.

There seemed to be so much potential in this story and locations, but it was tossed away by IMO lackadaisical direction. Poor actor preparation, poor dialogue, and possibly the most mismatched soundtrack ever. This must be where they got the idea for Rock You. It's a shame, really. The actors who can stand on their own give a good show, but are let down.

In WW2, the island of Malta, strategically located and vital to supply lines in the Mediterranean Sea, is fiercely attacked by the Germans but staunchly defended by the British.
Alec Guinness' economy of expression is awe inspiring. He can reveal the inner workings of the heart of his character simply by moving an eyebrow. Slow story based primarily on stock footage, but paints what must be a fairly accurate picture for a WWII story filmed in the early 50s.
18. Pale Rider (1985)
R | 115 min | Western
A mysterious preacher protects a humble prospector village from a greedy mining company trying to encroach on their land.
Votes: 44,123 | Gross: $41.41M
More of what you expect and set out to see from Eastwood. Tough wisdom, ever the philosopher with six-guns. This is said to be a loose remake of Shane and it's clear to see why. For years I was confused about which story went with this title and which went with High Plains Drifter. Though broadly similar, the character relationships are totally different. I guess you can get away with reprising a theme and character every ten years or so.
19. The A-Team (2010)
PG-13 | 117 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy
A group of Iraq War veterans looks to clear their name with the U.S. Military, who suspect the four men of committing a crime for which they were framed.
Votes: 225,661 | Gross: $77.22M
Having seen more than enough of the original series, it was obvious that this was going to be something that would appear to have been written by a pair of 4th grade boys on lunch break at school. Going into this with any notion that this is going to be in any way a serious film is idiocy. This film is idiocy and never has any intentions of being anything else. Enjoy it.
20. The Wild Bunch (1969)
R | 135 min | Action, Adventure, Western
An aging group of outlaws look for one last big score as the "traditional" American West is disappearing around them.
Avant Garde for 1969, but in 2011, this sort of film is taken for granted. Perhaps it was shocking in the way Pulp Fiction was once shocking. Some pretty good moments and a poignant comment on the period at the turn of the previous century... perhaps there's more allegory in there for our own times than was initially obvious. By today's standards the pace and relevance of some situations are a bit questionable.
21. Rear Window (1954)
PG | 112 min | Mystery, Thriller
A wheelchair-bound photographer spies on his neighbours from his apartment window and becomes convinced one of them has committed murder.
Votes: 360,496 | Gross: $36.76M
This film just makes you so uncomfortable, as Hitchcock is such a master at doing. The production is nearly as fascinating as the story itself. It's amazing to think that this is one of "the lost films" that had disappeared for more than 10 years.
22. Unforgiven (1992)
R | 130 min | Drama, Western
Retired Old West gunslinger William Munny reluctantly takes on one last job, with the help of his old partner and a young man.
Votes: 312,440 | Gross: $101.16M
Masterful. Perhaps it gains power with respect to the age of the viewer.

24. Gran Torino (2008)
R | 116 min | Drama
Disgruntled Korean War veteran Walt Kowalski sets out to reform his neighbor, a Hmong teenager who tried to steal Kowalski's prized possession: a 1972 Gran Torino.
Votes: 624,868 | Gross: $148.10M
I'd begun to think there were no longer any films worth watching in this century. Eastwood delivers again. His career is both inspiring and humbling. He has a way of being both terrible and wonderful at the same time.
25. The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)
PG | 135 min | Western
A Missouri farmer joins a Confederate guerrilla unit and winds up on the run from the Union soldiers who murdered his family.
Votes: 55,767 | Gross: $31.80M
Great story, despite it's dubious origins. There are subtleties in the acting that aren't immediately perceptible on first viewing. They call it a western, but it's nothing to do with the typical cow-poke, Indian fighters, gang of ruffians versus the virtuous marshal kind of situation. It sets up the origins of the culture that is seen in later westerns. The documentary showing Eastwood's directing style in action is equally enlightening. Acting and directing, he's in costume as if his character is directing the film. There are definitely some problems with the film craft here and there, but it moves along at a sensible pace and you get the idea despite a bit of fantasy.
