“ I was only 4 when this movie came out so I was unaware of the controversy surrounding this film when it had its theatrical release. I sometimes laugh out loud at the critics of this film who are more interested in providing their political beliefs during this controversial period in our history than actually critiquing this movie. It is a John Wayne war movie using all the same cliches we came to expect during WW II and that is not necessarily a bad thing. The Duke goes to a camp in the middle of VC territory and ends up capturing a high ranking VC officer who is then sent back to the states for interrogation. ” - kenneth-baran

It is long and likely didn't do well at the box office because of its length but it is an excellent film about the war. I've read several stories where Clint is being accused of trying to be PC or even anti-American for his directing of this film, but I see it differently. We all know Japan and Germany as well as Italy, were the agressors during WW II but that was the will of the political leaders, the foot soldiers who were dying on the battle field weren't political, they were merely men following orders wanting to go home to be with their families. ” - kenneth-baran
