500 Films: A Tribute (Part I)

Hi everyone, I am an avid cinephile and here is a list of films which I believe had helped me acquire a better taste in cinema. I am indebted to all these great masterpieces and the artists behind them. Many of the films listed here can be found in the book "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die", purely because I use that catalog as my guide. This isn’t any “The Ultimate” or “The Greatest” or “The Top” listing or any such futile attempt, neither it is any snobbish attempt to prove any superiority of taste or ideology (to each her/his own). It’s just a personal tribute to these films and their makers as I do acknowledge their influence and importance on myself. Selection of films are not definitive, hence may change at any point (there are too many films to watch and there will be new landmarks too). The titles are presented chronologically. I have added the Rotten Tomatoes Score to give a rough idea of critical opinion, though in many cases I had completely opposite opinions. Comments, views, suggestions and healthy discussions will be highly appreciated. Hope you enjoy going through the list.

“ Even though this short is way smaller in almost all aspects than Keaton's best loved film "The General", in my mind this one is really special. Keaton's stunts are unbelievable and original, the plot is intelligent, the gags are hilarious, the build up is awesome, the special effects are surreal, and the use of the medium to portray the struggle between real and imaginary world is unprecedented. Without going into the debate whether Keaton is better than Chaplin, this film proves that Keaton was not only one of the best comedians of all time he was also an avant-garde filmmaker.

No word can express the emotional and psychological power of this great piece of film art created by two genuinely gifted artistic minds. My No.5 film of all time, along with "Meshes Of The Afternoon"

“ How does a man engineer (read brainwashe) an entire country's population to believe that they are the masters of the human race and therefore have the right to massacre millions of lives to proclaim their supremacy? To understand this dark chapter of history I read "Mein Kampf" in my college days and it was clearly senseless rantings of a mad man. Later I watched this film for the same reason. Despite its pomp and glory and technical achievement, "Triumph Of The Will" remains an embarrassing, meticulous document of pure Evil. In fact everyone should watch this film to know how low can humanity stoop down when they have only one emotion, Hatred. Honestly this film will never lose its relevance if it is used as a lesson.

“ Watching Meshes was an experience similar to Un Chien Andalou, only better. The parabolic structure, the psychological content, the symbolism, the ambiguous plot, the cinematic language, everything was avant garde. And to think Deren and Hammid made this film in 1943!! Way, way ahead of its time, it seems it was just made yesterday. I revisit Meshes every now and then and it never sends me empty handed. Jointly at No.5 with "Un Chien Andalou".

“ Nothing unusual or out of ordinary ever happened in "Late Spring", and yet I was overwhelmed with emotions by the end. The magic of Ozu is that he can take completely mundane domestic incidents and turn them into profound dramas. His style is such that it draws the audience slowly but surely and before they know it the audience is completely in sync with the characters. Ozu's films have a Haiku like quality in their simple, brief and contemplative qualities.

The film gets to a point where the tension is almost unbearable, as if the audience find themselves sitting on ticking time (or maybe nitroglycerine) bombs like the doomed characters with no apparent escape. This phenomenal piece by Clouzot is miles ahead of any films made by Hitchcock, at least in my humble opinion.

“ A prodigious work of an overlooked genius from India, Ritwik Ghatak was the master of melodrama. Look out for the shot compositions, expressionistic sound design and an amazing score.This was an uncharacteristic commercial success for Ghatak. I would recommend the Western audience to do a little research on the division of Bengal by the British rulers and the subsequent forced migration of Hindu Bengalees to West Bengal (in India) from the Islamic East Bengal (now Bangladesh) by the Muslim majority. Ghatak was a migrant himself and suffered extreme poverty due to the division of Bengal, and hence all his films has this central theme. A light research on the subject will help the viewer to appreciate his body of work in a better way.
