Category III: Exploitation, shockfests, sleazefests, gorefests, true crime films....ALL MADE IN HONG KONG !by Viva_Chiba | created - 18 Jan 2011 | updated - 05 Aug 2013 | Public
Category III (CAT III) is a certificate given by the Hong Kong censors office (the Hong Kong equivalent of the american NC-17 or X), to films that contains extreme graphic violence, excessive sexual content and more.
I am going to list all the CAT III movies that i have seen and i will give you some reccomendations.
I will also add movies made before the introduction of the Hong Kong rating system that they have been subsequently rated as CAT III for their home video realease.
Got any CAT III movies to reccomend? don't be shy ! comment and tell me! This list will be updated.
MOVIES NOT LISTED ON IMDb: Street Kids Violence (1999): A movie about a gang of (mostly underage) thugs and wannabe gangsters, it doesn't have lots of "extreme" content, probably the censors feared copycats and decided to give the a movie a CAT III rating.
Bloody Buns (2003): A very crappy remake of The Untold Story, it painfully feels like a very bad made for TV movie (some scenes are badly copied from the original), the acting sucks and the gore/violence is very tame.
Killer 2 (2003): A sequel in name only of Killer (the Jordan Chan movie), while the film is not that graphic, it still has enough sadism to achieve the infamous rating. Not exactly what i expected, but it's enjoyable.
James Wong in Japan and Korea (1992): A funny comedy starring the musician James "Jim" Wong, while not graphic enough to go beyond the R-rating, it's still a movie full of foul language and other stuff that might be considered "politically incorrect". This film recycles many scenes from "Stooges in Tokyo" and "The Wild Goose Chase".
Under the rose (1992): And yet, another documentary about sex related business in Hong Kong featuring James "Jim" Wong, not as good as "Key to fortune", but this one has it's own share of "interesting stuff".
Blood on Bullet (2000): A bad direct to video action film, the only good thing about this film are some of the fight scenes. It got the CAT III rating because of some of the nudity and a rape scene, which is the worst rape scene in history of cinema, not because it's shocking and graphic, but because it's so bad that it looks like a bad comedy skit. From the cast, we have a few familiar faces: Lily Chung and Phillip Ko.
Naked Party (2000): A comedy/documentary about the porn and sex industry in japan, actually quite funny.
Obsession (1993): Horror/thriller about a female serial killer, surpsingly gory. Featuring: Maryanna Yip, Michael Chan Wai Man and a cameo from australian stuntman, Mike Miller.
Hitman's Call (1999): A boring and cheap attempt at making a "romantic hitman" type of film, Chin Siu Ho (who was in Jet Li's Fist of Lengend & Tai Chi Warrior) is wasted here, dissapointing action and so-so sex scenes. Also featuring Philip Ko & Charlie Cho
Internet Mirage (1999): Lame attempt at making a erotic/thriller, it looks like that it was shot in a holiday resort for less than 2 weeks, nothing interesting to see here. Featuring Philip Ko & Charlie Cho

1. Hei tai yang 731 (1988)
Not Rated | 105 min | Drama, History, Horror
Japanese troops round up Chinese and Russian prisoners of war and take them to a place called Squadron 731, where they are grotesquely tortured and experimented on to test new biological weapons.
The beginning of the CAT III movies (as we know them), it got a CAT III rating for it's extreme graphic violence. Based on a true story, it was highly controversial on it's realease.
2. Maruta 2: Laboratory of the Devil (1992)
96 min | Action, Drama, Horror
In the spring of 1945, Japan established a secret base, Unit 731 in Manchuria, where many innocent Chinese, Korean and Mongolian people were killed in grotesque experiments. An idealistic ... See full summary »
A sequel (more like a remake) to Men Behind the sun, gorier and nastier than the first movie (at least in my opinion).
The movie was NOT directed by T.F Mou (the director of the first movie), it was made with korean money and directed by Godfrey Ho, a notorious B-movie director (ever heard of Ninja Thunderbolt, Ninja Terminator ? no ? what about Undefeatable ?).
The special effects are very good and well made, it contains the most disgusting autopsy scene ever made.
The sequel lacks of the message that the first movie was trying to give, this is what you call an "exploitaiton" movie.
3. Hei tai yang 731 si wang lie che (1994)
93 min | Drama
During the shut down and destruction of the Japanese test camp Squadron 731 in Manchuria, a soldier becomes infected with a virus developed during the camp's testing and risks spreading it into Japan on the train ride home.
Avoid, it has NOTHING new, not even in the historical content, not even the gore satisfy me, the movie has many flashbacks, from the previous movies (this one is directed by Godfrey Ho too, so if you are familiar with his movies you probably know about the abuse of the "cut and paste" technique in his features.).
4. Men Behind the Sun 4 (1995)
91 min | Drama, History, War
In 1937, Japanese troops raid the Chinese city of Nanking to execute a planned massacre by subjecting over 300,000 helpless civilians to various tortures and atrocities before slaughtering them all.
The Men Behind the sun quadrilogy close it's circle, T.F Mou returns behind the camera.
This is "less" graphic and violent than the first and second movie, but the historical aspect makes the movie very interesting to see, if you are going to give a class about the Nanking massacre, take a look at this movie !
Unrated | 96 min | Comedy, Crime, Horror
Cops investigate a criminal running an unsuspecting restaurant, while trying to trace the steps back to how he ended up running it suddenly.
The pinnacle of the CAT III cinema, Anthony Wong gives an excellent performance (he even won an awards, 100% deserved !).
Untold story has it's good dose of brutality and gore.
Based on a true story.
From now, you will notice that the "Anthony Wong + Cat III" (or the even better "Anthony Wong + Cat III + Herman Yau) formula will be perfect !
Highly reccomended to CAT III newbies.
6. Yi boh lai beng duk (1996)
Not Rated | 98 min | Comedy, Crime, Horror
A restaurant employee wanted for murder contracts Ebola by raping a woman in South Africa and starts an outbreak there and in Hong Kong when he returns home.
Note: i strongly reccomend you to watch the Uncut austrian DVD from ILLUSIONS UNLTD films, it contains the violence and gore cut in all versions.
Anthony Wong teams up with director Herman Yau (director of "Untold Story") to deliver us another great CAT III movie.
Join Kai (Anthony Wong) in this Tour de Force of violence, while he spreads the Ebola virus and he gets revenge from all the mankind !
7. Gou yeung yi sang (1992)
89 min | Crime, Horror
An abnormal taxi driver lusts for blood every rainy night, and several young women are killed as a result.
CAT III masterpiece, directed by the great Billy Tang, with a great performance of Simon Yam.
Avoid every kind of "censored" version, try to get your hands on the uncut version.
Based on a true story, i can't say how much the movie is accurate.
8. Run and Kill (1993)
90 min | Action, Crime, Drama
To absolve a debt to a gang for accidentally putting a hit on his wife, a man goes and kills the gang's leader, leaving the leader's brother to seek violent retribution.
Director Billy Tang and actor Simon Yam teams up again, instead of the usual serial killer movie or true crime story, we get a violent and fast paced action thriller.
The violence is hard hitting (blood spraying, knife piercings, troath slashings....) and the movie is pretty good.
9. Yeuk saat (1994)
Not Rated | 91 min | Horror
A psychopathic rapist, who attacks women that wear red, runs a home for children with learning difficulties, and rapes a girl there who he sees wearing a red dress, leading to a revenge plot by the girl's social worker.
Billy Tang delivers another CAT III masterpiece, a violent and sad tale about some guy who goes crazy when he see the color red.
10. Xiang Gang qi an: Xi xue gui li wang (1994)
91 min | Comedy, Drama, Horror
A man's family is torn apart when his wife takes a loan from a loan shark who will stop at nothing to get his money back.
Anthony Wong goes CAT III again, featuring a cross-over with another CAT III movie: Dr Lamb, yes, Dr.Lamb is in this movie and his role is important to the plot (but unfortunately, not played by Simon Yam, but Lawrence Ng made a good job).
11. Sheng Gang yi hao tong ji fan (1994)
92 min | Action, Thriller
A Hong Kong cop is sent to mainland China to find a group of killers. Meanwhile, a cop discovers that his former love is aiding the gang of crooks.
Anthony Wong stars in another CAT III adventure, in the role of a cop, who is also a huge rock music fan.
The movie is not even that violent for a CAT III movie (and the version that i watched was censored, all the cuts where applied in the same scene: a hand chopping and a headshoot).
Not so good, but not even that bad.
12. Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky (1991)
R | 91 min | Action, Comedy, Thriller
A young man with superhuman strength is incarcerated at a prison run by corrupt officials and seeks to use his martial arts to clean up the system.
The most notorious, goriest CAT III and martial arts (don't expect "smooth" martial arts action) movie ever made !
13. Xue mei gui (1988)
92 min | Crime, Drama, Horror
Wong plays an unassuming nightclub employee in Macao who alienates a gang of drunken men (led by Shing Fui-on). They tail her after her shift, and mount a gang assault. She attempts to ... See full summary »
Before Riki-oh, director Ngai Kai Lam delivers this CAT III gem.
The movie is a pretty good rape and revenge flick, but good luck in finding an uncut version, because the ONLY VERSION avaliable is heavilly cut and it loose most of the graphic violence and nudity.
Try to get on the already out of print Megastar VCD, avoid the Joy Sales VCD like hell !
14. Daughter of Darkness (1993)
96 min | Comedy, Drama, Horror
Police suspect a young teenager who was horrifically abused by her family and raped by her father of finally snapping and slaughtering them all.
Director Ivan Lai delivers this memorable CAT III masterpiece.
The movie starts as a comedy, where Officer Lui (Anthony Wong) must investigate the murder of a family, but then, the movie goes in a sad atmosphere, where the poor Mak (Lily Chung) is abused by her family, including her father (played by William Ho, you probably know him for having played many villains in other CAT III films, like The Underground Banker and Brother of Darkness), the sexy Monica Lo (known for having played in the Steven Seagal movie 'Belly of the Beast') is also in this movie, playing the (bitchy) sister of Mak.
15. Mie men can an II: Jie zhong (1994)
Comedy, Drama, Horror
A local constable questions a woman about her whereabouts and what might have happened the night before. As he gets the young woman to talk, she spins a tale of debauchery, madness and ... See full summary »
Sequel of Daughter of Darkness, always directed by Ivan Lai.
The movie is pretty inferior to the original, but the story is less predictable and the violence is stronger.
16. Tai tin hang do: Sat hing (1994)
84 min | Horror, Mystery, Romance
A young man, Toh (Hugo Ng Doi-Yung) is on trial for the brutal murder of his brother, Wah (William Ho Ka-Kui). As the court case unfolds and witnesses take the stand, a horrific tale of ... See full summary »
Billy Tang gives us something in the same vein as Daughter of Darkness, but not as memorable, William Ho gives a good performance in this film.
17. Chik juk ging wan (1996)
91 min | Crime, Horror, Thriller
A serial rapist/murderer with a leg fetish notices a pretty female police officer at a shootout, and stalks her and her family to be his next victims.
Ivan Lai directs another CAT III shocker.
It's not a remake of the Michael Powell movie.
I was dissapointed by the lack of on-screen gory violece, but at least we get to see some gory aftermaths.
If the movie would be worldwide known, it would be considered as one of the most dangerous movies ever, because of it's portrayal of rape, the rape scenes are not trying to be disgusting or shocking, but arrousing.
18. Ren pi guo zheng xie (1996)
97 min | Horror
Someone has been skinning dead bodies and using their hide to make shoes. All of a sudden, a shoe factory whose business has been on the low side for some time improves tremendously.
A mixed bag in my book, the plot promised a good CAT III movie.
In a few scenes, the movies tries to emulate the atmosphere of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, with nice results.
At least William Ho is in it, but not in the big and bad villain role that he is known for.
19. Guang Zhou sha ren wang: Ren pi ri ji (1995)
84 min | Horror, Thriller
Unable to satisfy his sexual desires with his wife, Bill regularly visits prostitutes. Afterwards, he ties up and tortures them in various ways before killing them. Bill believes that if ... See full summary »
Pretty good CAT III film, against all my expectations.
It has a good dose of sleaze, violence and character development (necessary, for a serial killer movie).
20. Pang see: Song jun tin leung (2001)
88 min | Crime, Horror
A group of men brutally torture and murder a prostitute, who was caught stealing from them.
Another mixed bag.
From the cast we see Emily Kwan (she played Bo, in Untold Story) and she is the main actress.
Based on a true story, considered by many as the most gruesome murder case that ever happened in Hong Kong, the "real case" is known as "Hello Kitty murder".
It doesn't feature a lot of graphic violence, only in the last 20 or 10 minutes.
Not the best CAT III, reccomended only for CAT III completists.
NOTE: It has been reported that the Thai version contains some extra footage that is missing from the Hong Kong version.
21. Nu ji xie ren (1991)
94 min | Action, Comedy, Crime
A mad scientist transfers his mind to a wicked robot, which then embarks on a program of kidnaping, rape and murder, during which a female detective is killed. To fight the robot, the ... See full summary »
The weirdest example of CAT III that i can give.
This is an action movie, with explosion and martial arts action, but the CAT III elements are not much, a few sex scenes and some bloody violence (nothing so shocking for disgust the censors).
22. San sam long: Foon cheung tou foo (2000)
93 min | Crime, Thriller
Three disgruntled orphans spend their nights picking up hookers, then raping and killing them. Things get a bit more complicated when they anger a local gangster leader, and then when one of them falls in love with one of their victims.
Nice CAT III, with a good soundtrack and some nasty gore.
23. Yan yuk lap Cheung (1993)
We got a CAT III with 2 plots:
1) some pimps have problems with their prostitues wanting to "quit" the business, so they kill them !
2) someone with some physical and mental illness kills people and hangs their meats in his room, disguising them as food (this segment will surely remind of you Untold Story)
Nothing so good, but nothing so bad either
24. Li Xiao Long yu wo (1976)
R | Biography, Drama
A movie on the life of the renowned Bruce Lee, especially his relationship with his mistress (played by Betty Ting Pei, who was Lee's mistress in real life and in whose apartment he died).
Danny Lee plays Bruce Lee....in a Bruceploitation movie !
The movie is boring, the only thing watchable are the sex and nude scenes.
25. Bang jia Huang Qi-Hui (1993)
Kent Cheung (Run and Kill, Dr Lamb) stars in this CAT III thriller, based on a true story, it's based on the kidnapping of Teddy Wang (also seen in the Jackie Chan movie Crime Story).
The CAT III elements are very few (in fact, there is only one scene that it can be considered CAT III), there's also the usual comedy.
26. Xi huan fu shi (1995)
Another CAT III thriller where the elements are very few, the only CAT III scene is a very gory mutilation scene, besides this, this movie is actually pretty good.
27. Mo lu kuang hua (1993)
98 min | Action, Crime, Drama
An action movie with Cynthia Khan and Yukari Oshima (part of the girls with guns sub-genre).
Looks like that this movie is CAT III, probably because of a sex scene (which it looks like to be a spoof of the CAT III movies), there is also some bloody violence, but nothing so shocking.
28. San lang qi an (1989)
105 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller
After Wai is fired by his penny-pinching boss, Mr. Wong, Wai and his two friends, Yee-Charn and Chi-King, decide to kidnap Wong's son, Kau. Matters only become worse when they accidentally result in Kau's death.
Reported to be the FIRST true movie to get a CAT III rating, the CAT III content is far from "extreme", there is just a scene of nudity and some violence.
The movie is based on a real crime case, called the "Strange case of the 3 wolves".
29. Triads: The Inside Story (1989)
TV-MA | 91 min | Crime, Drama
Li Man-Ho comes to Hong Kong after his father's death following a double crossed peace meeting at the hands of a rival gang. The family's business begins to crumble as rival organizations ... See full summary »
You probably know that a movie gets a CAT III rating because of the extreme violence or the sexual content, this crime-thriller starring Chow Yun-fat got the infamous rating because the movie has deciption of Triad (mafia) lifestyle.
The violence is nothing extreme (altough there is some blood).
The movie is pretty average, if you are looking for your average CAT III movie, skip this one, i recommend this one only to the fans of Chow Yun-fat.
30. Leng xue ren lang (1994)
89 min | Horror
Your average CAT III movie about a serial killer.
The action takes place in a village in Mainland China (Not my favorite scenario...for a serial killer movie), the murder scenes are nasty (nothing really gory, but still nasty) and there are a few humorous scenes (in the tradition of The Untold Story).....oh yeah, William Ho is here too!
31. Mo tai (1983)
84 min | Horror
A woman becomes possessed and dies after a monster is released from an antique vase she had purchased. Twelve years later the monster is re-awakened. First he possesses the family's dog, before moving on to the woman's nephew.
A good old fashioned supernatural horror film.
The movie doesn't have an abbundance of CAT III content, probably, the CAT III was given because of the sexual content (which is more weird than arousing). There are a lot of old school special effects, some weird gore and a lot more. I don't recommend this movie to hardcore fans of CAT III movies, but to hardcore fans of supernatural horror movies.
32. Yan yuk cha siu bau II: Tin jue dei mit (1998)
91 min | Crime, Horror
An unhappily married couple invite the wife's cousin, who comes from Mainland China, to live with them. She has a horrible way of overcoming hardship and becomes the master of the barbecue.
A sequel to the CAT III classic The Untold Story.
This sequel is a disappointment, the violence/gore is pretty tame. In contrast, The untold Story II has more sex/nudity than the original. Anthony Wong plays a cop, Anthony Wong is one of the few redeeming factors of this sequel. Recommended to hardcore fans of Anthony Wong or CAT III completists.
Bizarre movie, the VCD that i own says that this movie has a CAT III rating, the content of the movie is nothing so extreme (i think that the CAT III rating has been given because of the mild/implied sexual situations, nothing that can go beyond the PG-13 rating), there is some gory imagery, but nothing that can please the gorehounds. One of the few things that made this movie enjoyable, where the "engrish" subtitles. Pituitary Hunter features the saddest/emotional ending that i have seen in a CAT III movie.
34. Yin zhong (1984)
88 min | Horror
The figure of an evil genius is stolen by a photographer. At night the genius comes to life and rapes his girlfriend while both of them are drunk.
Supernatural horror movie.
The movie has the ingredients for an enjoyable CAT III ride: good atmosphere, gore, nudity and a lot more.
Thanks to fulcilives2001 for the suggestion.
35. The Seventh Curse (1986)

A very enjoyable action-adventure flick, from the director of Riki-Oh.
The movie offers: Plenty of gore, nudity, well coreographed martial arts fights, scary (and weird) creatures and lots of fun!
36. Nue zhi lian (1993)
87 min | Comedy, Drama, Horror
A woman looks to a cop for help against her abusive husband, who constantly rapes, beats, and belittles her and her son, but the husband catches wind of the cop's plan.
Yet another CAT III movie starring Anthony Wong, Danny Lee and Eric Kei (the guy who plays "Robert" in The Untold Story)
The violence is nasty, but Love to Kill wasn't that masterpiece that i was expecting, but hardcore CAT III fans may be interested to give a chance at this flick.
37. Tao se zhui qi sha (1994)
R | 89 min | Action
Chu Chi Kit returns to HK from Taiwan after many years in hiding, and immediately resumes his relationship with old flame May and rejoins his old friend Cramp in a drug operation. But times... See full summary »
The IMDb page list this movie as beign a Taiwanese production, but an Hong Kong production company was actually involved in the making of this film.
Hunting List is a pretty good triad movie, the gunplay is good, violent and bloody, not to be missed!
38. Jing tian long hu bao (1990)
Unrated | 90 min | Action, Drama
NOTE: I watched the Hong Kong VHS version, it has been reported that this version contains more violence, i can't say how much of this is true, unfortunately, the VHS has a flaw that 'ruined' the whole movie, after the first portion of the movie, the english subtitles are unreadable.
Another Godfrey Ho movie makes the list! Fans of the girls with guns movies will surely love this one. The movie has plenty of bloodshed, cool action scenes and sex for keep you entertained.
39. Chik loh go yeung (1992)
R | 89 min | Action, Crime, Romance
A young woman is trained by a martial arts specialist to become a professional assassin.
Votes: 1,911 | Gross: $0.03M
A classic of CAT III cinema, one of the few CAT III movies that has lesbian undertones.
The movie has some nice erotic scenes (in most of these scenes the nudity is only suggested rather than graphically shown), martial arts fights, gunfights and some comedy. Thanks to ninjaalexs for the suggestion.
40. Gung hoi keung gaan fung (1993)
91 min | Action, Crime
What can you expect from a title like "Rape in public sea"?
I know that you would probably expect some average CAT III thriller, but probably you wouldn't expect an action film!
The movie has many action scenes, mostly involving fights and gunfights, there is blood, but nothing so extreme, probably the only reason why this movie is CAT III is because of some of the sex scenes (including the "rape" scene, which is nothing so extreme compared to other CAT III movies). Still, not a total waste of time, recommended to hardcore fans of HK action films.
41. Mou jing shi fen (1993)
98 min | Action
Simon Yam plays a former big city cop who had a very bad experince with an AK-47. So he's been assigned duty on one of the Hong Kong Islands as a police chief of a small village. He spends ... See full summary »
Another CAT III movie starring Simon Yam.
The concept is great and the execution is fine, as for the CAT III elements the movie contains some sex and some bloody squibs.
42. SPL: Sha po lang (2005)
Not Rated | 93 min | Action, Crime, Thriller
A near retired inspector and his unit are willing to put down a crime boss at all costs while dealing with his replacement, who is getting in their way. Meanwhile, the crime boss sends his top henchmen to put an end to their dirty schemes.
A Donnie Yen/Sammo Hung movie makes the list!
Looks like that this action/thriller film has been rated CAT III probably because of the triad themes (movies dealing with triads have always been a problem for the Hong Kong censor's) or because of the brutal violence. The last 30 minutes are full of brutal martial arts, something that will not disappoint martial arts fans.
43. Ren tou dou fu tang (2001)
91 min | Horror, Thriller

Another movie based on the 'Hello Kitty Murder', i found this to be a better movie compared to Human Pork Chop, the only thing that this movie lacks is the gore from Human Pork Chop, while Human Pork Chop had some gore, this one has T&A (something completly absent from Human Pork Chop).
I noticed 2 cuts in the dvd that i watched (i think that one of the cuts has been made for copyright reasons).
The face of the Hello Kitty Doll has been pixellated in every scene (i heard that the version seen in theaters contains the 'uncensored' shots of the doll).

Considered by many as the Hong Kong answer to Basic Instinct (something doubtful, since the only 2 things in this movie that reminds me of Basic Instinct are the title and a scene in the movie).
Evil Instinct is an erotic thriller with some interesting ideas, it has plenty of sex throughout the film for keep you entertained.
45. Ho kong fung wan (1998)
92 min | Crime
It was the summer of 1991, Macau was in violent atmosphere.
A CAT III film directed by Billy Tang has to be watched, right?
Unfortunately, this film will disappoint hardcore CAT III fans, since this movie is not full of sex or violence, this movie is a pretty good gangster/triad film (and i'm pretty sure that the film got a CAT III rating just because of this), i enjoyed the film, it had good performances from the cast and a good soundtrack.
46. Nan er wu fei (1992)
94 min | Thriller
One of the worst CAT III films that i have seen, one of those movies that doesn't keep your attention in any way.
The plot involves a famous photographer beign accused of murders (and necrophilia acts) that he didn't committed, one of his friends must prove his innocence for save him.
There's action, but it's nothing that saves this film from beign a borefest, there are some things weird things in this film: - The musical score from one of the 'Nightmare on elm street' films
- A Bar with Nazi decorations
47. Yat do king sing (1993)
105 min | Drama
A young martial arts teacher is drawn into a plan to reform Imperial China.
An historical martial arts film, directed by Sammo Hung!
The reason why this film got the CAT III rating is because of the gory violence in two of the action scenes. Martial arts fans will surely like this one.
48. Gong tau (2007)
97 min | Horror
Nostalgia-filled film, Herman Yau delivered us some of the best CAT III flicks (The Untold Story, Dr.Lamb).
Gong tau has all the ingredients that made us watch a CAT III film: Gore, nudity, sex and weird stuff. The only thing that i hated about this movie was some of the use of CGI, it gets too cheesy. Thanks to fulcilives2001 for the suggestion.
49. Tun Men se mo (1994)
91 min | Crime, Horror
A serial rapist is loose in the Hong Kong suburb of Tuen Mun. Based on the true story of Lam Kwok-wai, who raped and murdered women in the early 90s.
I expected an average CAT III thriller with this one, but i got something better.
This is a serious film based on the real life serial rapist/killer Lam Kwok-wai, the film has no humorous moments and the feature mostly focuses on the police procedures, the film has also a good dose of suspense.
50. The Assassin (1993)

Probably this is the goriest Wu-xia film ever made, the film has lots of blood and gore (bloody slashings, graphic mutilations and more).
51. Lao ni mei (1995)
One of the many CAT III films about disillusioned youth.
The CAT III rating was awarded because of the sexual content and probably even for the use of drugs, not for the average CAT III junkie, i found this to be a pretty interesting social commentary.
52. Xie luo ji (1989)
92 min | Horror
Interesting mix of horror and action.
The movie is about a private detective and his friend investigating evil religious cults. The film has some cool stunts, cool martial arts fights, some gunplay, some comedy, some sex, some nudity and some gore threw in for good measure.
53. Xie sha (1996)
96 min | Horror
Standard CAT III flick, in some moments the film makes tribute to Shining and another classic horror film that i will not mention.
The film is only reccomended to CAT III junkies, since there is not much to see here, but the film had a pretty good atmosphere, also it was nice to see William Ho in a different role, the film has lots of sex for keep you entertained.
54. Nan yang shi da xie shu (1995)
89 min | Comedy, Horror, Fantasy
A group of friends went on a hedonistic trip to Thailand. Accidentally, they rape and kill a sorcerer's sister. Now, upon arriving back home to Hong Kong, they find themselves cursed by the sorcerer.
The weirdest CAT III film ever made, fans of weird, campy and crazy cinema will surely like to take a look at this movie.
55. Dream Home (2010)
Not Rated | 96 min | Crime, Drama, Horror
Cheng Li-sheung is a young, upwardly mobile professional finally ready to invest in her first home. But when the deal falls through, she is forced to keep her dream alive - even if it means keeping her would-be neighbors dead.
Interesting horror film, with a bit of social commentary.
The kills are nasty, gory and brutal
56. Yuen chi mo hei (1999)
91 min | Action
One of those times where i got tricked by a cool looking cover, looking at the cover, i expected a good combination of ass kicking action and some T&A....something like Naked Killer (in fact, it was produced by Wong Jing, the same producer of Naked Killer, also, the director of that movie has a role in this flick).
While the movie has some nudity, the movie also offers some ass kicking action (more like testicle kicking action), the action offers some fight scenes, nothing so spectacular, but it's decent by HK film standards.
I knew that Body Weapon wouldn't be good as Naked Killer, but this film is just a disappointment, it really doesn't offer much. Reccomended only to CAT III completists.
57. Yan jiang (1993)
90 min | Thriller
Average CAT III flick, the plot involves an unfaithful husband trying to use black magic in order to have a fun and lustful life and get away with it (by the way, i found the title "Woman Killer's Rampage" to be a little bit misleading)
The only CAT III element is the nudity, there's also some comedy and some Kung-fu fighting. Again, for completists only.
58. Zheng rong (1995)
A flat-chested gold-digger who gets her breasts enlarged to enhance her social status. In an amazing mirror of reality, she manages to snag a rich playboy with her brand new bazookas. ... See full summary »
Would you expect that Ivan Lai (the director of Daughter of Darkness) would make a comedy about breast implants?
Besides having some nudity and sex, the film offers genuine footage of graphic surgeries, besides this, the tone of this film is light hearted. I thought that this flick was going to be a real borefest, but i thought that it was watchable.
59. Hak sai lik (2008)
94 min | Action
A former triad fresh from a prison term, decides to go straight, but finds himself up against a rival gangster.
Yet another CAT III movie produced by Wong Jing, the CAT III rating must be given because of the deciption of sex (which is nothing so graphic compared to other movies that can be found on this list) and violence.
One of my complaints is the CGI gore, i wouldn't mind if it was well done, but it's too cheesy.
60. Qing ben jia ren (1991)
93 min | Action, Comedy, Crime
I didn't expected much from a sex comedy called "Pretty Woman", i thought that it would be boring and uninteresting, but i found it to be watchable and entertaining.
The film has plenty of sex, nudity and to my surprise, we even get to see some good action scenes
61. Yin yao hao qing (1992)
This is an action movie, there are only a few CAT III elements: sex and nudity.
The action scenes are passable and the fights are good to look, for completists only.
62. Hong deng qu (1996)
91 min | Action, Comedy, Crime
Tung Yen goes into jail for her boyfriend, Walkie Pi, after they kill a gang boss together. On the other hand, Walkie Pi escapes to Holland. When Tung Yen gets out, she hooks up with club owner, Playboy Man, and runs the girls at his club.
Another CAT III movie delivered by the master Billy Tang, this is not his best film, but it's still watchable.
The CAT III content is pretty tame (something that wouldn't go beyond the R-Rating), there is some nudity and there's some violence (again, nothing so extreme). Simon Yam gives a good performance in this one.
63. Keung gaan ngon chung ngon (1993)
Very standard CAT III film, not much to see here, besides some sex scenes. For completists only.
64. Gau ngao gau (2006)
109 min | Action, Crime, Drama
A Cambodian assassin finds himself on the run from Hong Kong police after completing his assignment.
One of the most nihilistic films that i ever watched, the CAT III rating was awarded because of the violence (which is nothing so graphic, it's the kind of movie that would make a "hard PG-13" or a pretty tame R-Rated movie). Not really for CAT III fans, i reccomend this only if you like movies with a good nihilistic atmosphere.
65. Hung bou gai (1997)
87 min | Horror
A mainland Chinese girl is, with her husband, a wanted criminal and they have to get to Hong Kong in order to stay alive and be free.
Pretty cool and chilling thriller, the CAT III rating was awarded because of the graphic violence.
The film has good cinematography and some good performances from the cast.
66. Xiang Gang jian sha ji an (1992)
Crime, Drama, Thriller
In April 1985, two expatriate students Kenneth McBride, age 17, and 18 year-old Nicola Myers were beaten, raped, and murdered by a teenage gang. Based on the true story of Hong Kong's Braemar Hill murders.
Based on an actual murder case, known as the Braemar Hill murders.
Nothing so special, nothing so bad, but nothing so good either. It has the usual narrative structure (story told by flashbacks), it also features some of the most brutal scenes of sexual violence featured in a CAT III film.
67. Miao tan shuang jiao (1992)
86 min | Action, Comedy
A cop goes undercover as a nightclub singer to catch a professional hitman.
So, i got the Universe VCD of this film and it has a CAT III on the cover and the movie has no CAT III elements at all.
According to some reviews the Tai Seng version (which is dubbed in english), contains a nude shower scene featuring Sophia Crawford...my version is definitely cut (that scene is probably the only reason why the film had a CAT III rating, i guess that the guys at Universe used the wrong master).
Anyway, the film features cool action scenes, cool fights, cool stunts, kick ass girls, some bloody squibs and more stuff, if you are a fan of Girls with guns movies, this is worth to watch.
68. Ging bin (1996)
97 min | Crime, Romance, Thriller
Looks like that there are two covers for this movie, one with a CAT IIB rating and a CAT III rating and as far i know, both editions contains the same version.
All of a Sudden is a thriller with a pretty good structure, with enough mistery and twists to keep your eyes glued to the screen. As for the CAT III elements, we get some sex, nudity and some violence.
69. Zhan long zai ye (1992)
PG-13 | 94 min | Action, Thriller
A Billy Blanks and Jerry Trimble movie makes the list!
Strangely the IMDb page of this movie claims that this movie is rated PG-13, it might be a mistake or this film actually got a (heavily cut) realease in the U.S
The DVD that i own has a CAT III rating on it, i really can't see why this movie got a CAT III rating, probably, it got the rating because of a scene of sexual violence (which is very brief and not even that disturbing). Besides that, there's plenty of bloody violence, if you are looking for an action film, give this movie a look, but if you are looking for a real CAT III film, skip this one.
70. Rong shi qi an (1993)
95 min | Crime, Horror
Based on a true story. A female bible student corresponds with a couple that is sent to prison after a goopy body is found in their apartment in a trunk filled with acid. After visiting the... See full summary »
Another thriller inspired by a true murder case, the film starts pretty well, but then it turns into a love story (pretty boring, if you ask me) and again, the film turns into a legal thriller.
I think that the CAT III must have been awarded because of a few nude scenes, the bits of violence and gore could have been passed at a lower rating. There are also a few hilarious bits in the final reel, which i'm not going to spoil.
71. Triad Wars (2008)
R | 117 min | Action, Crime, Drama
In the mist of a violent gang war, a series of unfortunate events threatens the fate of a powerful triad leader and his empire.
Sammo Hung goes CAT III again, in this brutal triad actioneer, but for me, the real highlight was to see Danny Lee back to the big screen after 4 years since his last movie.
The rating was awarded because of the gory and brutal violence throughout the film (some of the blood is digital, but it's not as cheesy as other movies seen on this list), also, the fights are brutal and well coreographed.
A direct-to-video film produced by Danny Lee (and realeased through his company, Magnum Films).
The film is shot on video and it has many musics stolen from famous films (some of them includes: Predator and Total Recall). The action scenes are passable and there's also some bloody violence. The CAT III rating has been given because of a brief sex scene and nothing else, Ben Ng (of Red to Kill fame) gives a good performance in this one.
73. Chung ngon sat luk ji geng tin haai gip ngon (1994 Video)
A nutty gang member is released from prison and he goes on a one man rampage destroying his old gang, didles his old lady and single handedly takes on Danny Lee's usually bad ass gang of ... See full summary »
Another direct-to-video film produced by Danny Lee (he also appears in this film), unfortunately, english subtitles were never made for this movie (like most of these direct to video films from Magnum films, there are only a few exceptions) and just like The Fatalist, this one was shot on video too.
The action scenes aren't cheap as expected and there is also some brutal gore (the main reason for the rating).
Not as bad as expected, but this one is far from being a masterpiece.
74. Mi qing te jing (1995)
And yet another direct-to-video film produced by Danny Lee, this one is a pretty good action movie, with good action scenes and plus, there are many bits of gore (one of the reason of the rating, besides the female nudity), same can't be said about the plot, which is not something new or special.
75. Zheng ren (1993)
A pretty good triad flick, this one got a CAT III rating mostly for the violence (and probably even for the deciption of the triad lifestyle), which is (surprisingly) brutal and gory.
76. Huo bao da quan zi (1992)
87 min | Action, Crime
Decent action flick, starring Michiko Nishiwaki. There's plenty of gory gunplay throughout the film (and also some nice fights), but the film got the rating because of a few scenes of (implied) sexual violence and a very brief scene of nudity.
77. Hao qing ye sheng huo (1997)
This has to be the sleaziest and cheesiest Mondo-style sex documentary ever made! It's a supposed candid camera expose with an emphasis on massage parlors and big boobs. At one point the ... See full summary »
A funny mondo style documentary, which it covers the sex industry (and other sex related stuff) in Hong Kong (and Macao), besides the nude skin, there are also some funny scenes featuring Bobby Yip.
78. Si zhong zhen mian mu (1992)
95 min | Comedy
A fake documentary that takes a hidden camera look at Hong Kong's sex industry.
Another documentary, this time, we get Jim Wong (a movie composer) and his gorgeous assistant, Cindy Yip, as the hosts. The focus of the documentary is the prostitution business in HK (and mainland China), interesting to watch.
79. Dong bat chu dik fung ching (1993)
92 min | Crime, Thriller
Fred Suen is fan of TV news reporter Kitty Wong. It is an obsession that will eventually result in rape and murder.
Simon Yam stars in this entertaining thriller (playing your average next door psycho/stalker), this might not be the best of the genre, but it's enjoyable enough to not bore you.
80. Chi luo kuang ben (1993)
A martial arts girl (Tamara Guo) teams up with a female cop (Farini Cheung) to smash and kick their way to final justice!
Entertaining action film, with a touch of feminism. Corey Yuen provides the excellent fights, surprisingly, there's no abbundance of sex and nudity (at least for a CAT III movie), but some of the scenes are shocking enough to offend the most unexperienced viewer. I expected worse.
81. Hei jie wu nan (1992)
The leader of an underground gang wants to collaborate with the gang in the Northern of Thailand to control the supply of weapon in Hong Kong, but unexpectedly, the game is changed by a newly formed gang.
An action film featuring Dick Wei, Melvin Wong, Shing Fui-on and Ken Tong.
The only real CAT III element are the sex scenes, but the action scenes are fast, furious and well done, the film features one of my favorite shootouts, it has enough explosions and gunfire for be impressive and fun, it only needed more squibs.
I expected garbage, but it's a rather entertaining film.
Also, the title is a bit unappropriate (Dark street gigolo), because the movie focuses on a gang war.
82. Yi tan zhao yao jing zhi ying shao ming ce (1996)
Rebecca is a struggling actress who ends up working as an assistant to a high class female pimp called Mandy. Shehas feelings for Rebecca, but has a secret that she cannot tell her.
Entertaining erotic comedy, much better than expected. Besides the obvious smut, the film also parodies some popular movies, such as The Untold Story, Young and dangerous and The Final Option.
83. Bu wen nu xue tang (1994)
92 min | Comedy, Romance
A teenage boy awakens a ghost from an antique pot. To be reincarnated the ghost must help his present day counterpart by helping him find romance.
This is pretty much the Hong Kong equivalent of the many U.S. produced sex comedies (like Porky's), it's a funny film and despite the ammount of sex and nudity, this is pretty much a lighthearted movie (compared to other CAT III films).
James Wong's performance is one of the best things that this feature has to offer.
84. Faa gaai kwong ban (1992)
97 min | Action, Crime, Drama
Hung's lover Sam doesn't know that Hung is actually a hooker. He gets involved with a jewelry store robbery and has to hide at Hung's house for a while. Hung tries to hide her profession from Sam, this is where the truth starts unfolding.
Erotic/thriller/action flick directed by former Shaw Brothers actor/director Johnny Wang and starring Billy Chow (the baddie from the Jet Li movie Fist of legend).
The violence gets brutal (and offensive, at least to some of the viewers) in many moments, the action scenes are well made, but the movie wasn't the masterpiece that i expected.
85. Si ji sha ren kuang (1995)
Stylish erotic thriller, with Carrie Ng as the lead. Not the best in the genre, but i reccomend it to the completists
86. Bu wen sao (1992)
88 min | Comedy
Another movie starring James Wong, this time the CAT III rating was awarded mostly for the harsh sexual jokes, but the film is fun to watch.
87. Zhi zhu nu (1995)
91 min | Mystery
Michael Wong is walking in a circle, he is not only facing a complex human relationship as well as inharmonious relationship with some terrible persons. Those affairs push Michael to the death.
Entertaining thriller, starring Michael Wong and Jade Leung, it's not extreme in terms of graphich violence or sex, but it's not a boring viewing.
88. Gou hun e meng (1999)
88 min | Horror
Supernatural thriller, the rating was mostly awarded for the T&A, but there's some brief gory imagery, not that bad, for a CAT III from the late 90's.
89. Hua xin ye mei gui (1988)
Crappy softcore "thriller", boring and pointless. The only good thing about this movie is Hwang Jang Lee, unfortunately, he doesn't kick ass, he just breaks some bricks.
90. Jing hua rou bo jiang jian dang (1994)
Action thriller starring Michael Chan Wai-man, Alex Fong and Anthony Wong. It's the usual gangster actioneer, with a CAT III twist, the action scenes are passable and the film is okay.
91. Ma fu shou ji (1993)
After losing his job and his girlfriend, an ordinary worker becomes a star pimp in Hong Kong.
Watchable erotic comedy, it gives a few chuckles. Nothing special, but nothing so bad either.
92. Shou xing xin ren lei (2000)
88 min | Horror, Thriller
Office worker, ugly and shy Min, not only suffers from a lack of success in women, but is also humiliated by everyone around. He gets his kicks taking sneaky snaps of his female co-workers,... See full summary »
Nice erotic/thriller, the story may be a bit predictable, but the cinematography is nice and for a CAT III movie produced in the 00's, it reminds me of other films produced during the golden era of CAT III movies.
93. Meng gui shan fen (1989)
Supernatural/horror comedy, starring Richard Ng.
The comedy scenes are fun to watch and as for the CAT III elements, the film features a rape scene and some gore.
94. Nan yang di yi xie jiang (1996)
96 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Horror
Pretty cool horror film, it features the same scenario as "The eternal evil of asia" (it also features 2 actors from that movie: Ben Ng and Elvis Tsui), but the plot is more engaging and interesting. Throughout the movie, we are treated with: the usual sex scenes, some gore, some weird imagery and other CAT III goodies.
95. Yin zuo xi chun (1991)
89 min | Comedy
Another movie starring James Wong Jim & Tommy Wong. Just like "Stooges in Hong Kong", the film mostly features harsh sexual jokes, the sexual content is nothing that goes beyond the R-Rating. The movie "James Wong in Korea and Japan" (Not listed on IMDb) recycles some footage from this movie and The Wild Goose Chase (another movie starring James Wong Jim).
96. Sik gong II maan lee kui moh (1998)
A Hong Kong/Thailand co-production, this film uses a lot of footage from a movie called "Witchcraft Vs Curse", you can notice this, because Elvis Tsui doesn't appear much in this movie. Still, there's enough naked skin to keep you entertained.
97. Yan yuk wan gui (1999)
88 min | Crime, Horror
A man who was abused by his mother as a child goes on a killing spree. He abducts numerous woman, tortures, beats and eventually kills them.
Standard serial killer film, with a decent cast (including Anthony Wong), tame violence, with some nudity to justify the CAT III rating, for completists only.
98. Electrical Girl (2001)
89 min | Comedy
Electrical Girl centers around a horny young woman (Sophie Ngan) who has electrical genitals. When young Jan gets sexually aroused, she emits bolts of electricity from various orifices.
Silly comedy that is decent only on the first half, the only redeeming factors are the sexy leading lady (Sophie Ngan) and Suet Lam with his talks about Triad culture.
99. Crime of Beast II (2002)
92 min | Thriller
An accident brings three strangers Rex, Amy, and Ivy to a remote island. Amy falls for Rex. Rex makes himself King of two Queens on the island. His "queens" Amy and Ivy have different plans and want to leave the island.
Sequel in name only, of a bad movie called Crime of a Beast (not a CAT III movie), this "sequel" is slightly better than the predecessor, basically, it's the softcore porn of Robert Zemecki's Cast Away, with 2 hot girls (Grace Lam & Sophie Ngan). Highlight includes: Hilarious CGI sequences and Grace Lam.
100. Big bo yau waak (2003 Video)
Unrated | 90 min | Romance
A cheap softcore film (shot on digital video), that is surprisingly, not boring. The sex scenes have some decent camera work and a few of them have a nice erotic charge. Essential, for Grace Lam fans. Most of the soundtrack hilariously reminds me of some old computer games.
