The unburied dead return to life and seek human victims.

Director: Tom Savini | Stars: Tony Todd, Patricia Tallman, Tom Towles, McKee Anderson

Votes: 33,536 | Gross: $5.84M

Interesting Remake of the 1968 George Romero classic. A little light on the gore but Patricia Tallman's performance as Barbara is a much more layered strong heroine to root for.

A special military unit fights a powerful, out-of-control supercomputer and hundreds of scientists who have mutated into flesh-eating creatures after a laboratory accident.

Director: Paul W.S. Anderson | Stars: Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Ryan McCluskey, Oscar Pearce

Votes: 218,038 | Gross: $40.12M

Based off the Capcom video games, this is the first entry into the movie adaptations. It is also perhaps the most horror oriented whereas the sequels became like a mix between aliens and tomb raider. The zombies here are quite menacing and are at the forefront this time.

Director: George A. Romero | Stars: John Leguizamo, Asia Argento, Simon Baker, Dennis Hopper

Votes: 83,208 | Gross: $20.70M

wasn't quite the epic return i had hoped for, but features a heavy dose of blood/guts and that's a winner in my book :)

4. Zombie (1979)

Director: Lucio Fulci | Stars: Tisa Farrow, Ian McCulloch, Richard Johnson, Al Cliver

Votes: 21,557

Lucio Fulci's gore classic. Slow pace but it's worth it, two scenes come to mind whenever this film is mentioned, eye splinter! and zombie vs.shark! one minor gripe in this film, when you see a zombie slowly rising from its grave apparently you just stand there and wait for it to bite out your throat.

Director: George A. Romero | Stars: Lori Cardille, Terry Alexander, Joseph Pilato, Jarlath Conroy

nowhere near as good as night/dawn but the gore effects by Tom Savini are fantastic, and make it worth checking out. Just make sure your not eating any nachos.

There is panic throughout the nation as the dead suddenly come back to life. The film follows a group of characters who barricade themselves in an old farmhouse in an attempt to remain safe from these bloodthirsty, flesh-eating monsters.

Director: George A. Romero | Stars: Duane Jones, Judith O'Dea, Karl Hardman, Marilyn Eastman

Votes: 96,797 | Gross: $0.09M

The original classic. The zombies here don't eat you alive, rather they kill you first and then eat you. If you can get around the fact that the supposed female lead is a wimpering damsel in distress (and who eventually becomes comatose) then you will enjoy one of the first real zombie films.

Director: Edgar Wright | Stars: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Kate Ashfield, Lucy Davis

really funny horror/comedy with surprising bits of brutality. It balances the darkness and humor really well.

Not exactly zombies in the traditional scence but close enough. These infected breed of undead will scare the hell out of you.

Director: Zack Snyder | Stars: Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Mekhi Phifer, Jake Weber

Surprisingly good Re-imagining of the original. This one features zombies who appear to be on steroids and run so fast you'd think they ought to try for the Olympic medal.

Director: Peter Jackson | Stars: Timothy Balme, Diana Peñalver, Elizabeth Moody, Ian Watkin

Votes: 82,497 | Gross: $0.24M

Outrageously Gory cult classic. Not one for the squeamish, but its humor is so tongue in cheek its hard not to laugh. From director Peter Jackson(that's right) the same man who brought you the lord of the rings trilogy.

11. The Return of the Living Dead (1985)

Fun and scary 80's zombie movie. Featuring a punk soundtrack and zombies with the ability to say "BRAIIIIINSSS" and that's exactly what they are after.

Following an ever-growing epidemic of zombies that have risen from the dead, two Philadelphia S.W.A.T. team members, a traffic reporter, and his television executive girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall.

Director: George A. Romero | Stars: David Emge, Ken Foree, Scott H. Reiniger, Gaylen Ross

Votes: 97,146 | Gross: $5.10M

In my opinion it is the best of it's kind. This really sets the formula for all the zombie do's and don'ts to follow. The gore effects by Tom Savini are really great and the plot is quite genius having a group of people take refuge in a mall.
