Date Set:1907 2 years ago I saw the 2007 version of "A Room with a View" and it was really difficult to tell which is better ar first. Having stated that I took the Merchant & Ivory version and thoroughly enjoyed it. You can tell the difference easily between the 2007 and the 1985: (1) the actors/actresses. I'd much prefer Julian Sands as the eccentric George Emerson and Helena Bonham Carter as Miss Lucy Honeychurch. She has face that can go in any period drama. Elaine Cassidy was very good but not to the standards of Helena. (2) Direction:-the most vivid image that comes to mind in the 1985 is where Lucy is standing in a field of flowers and George strides up and kisses. WOW what a scene. Visually that production is better and the scenery is wonderful. James Ivory certainly knows how to direct.***SPOILER*** I did find the ending to the 2007 more realistic as it showed what happened after the death of George and what Lucy remembers.

Wonderful period piece with fabulour acting. Who can forget when Mister (played by Danny Glover) forcefully torn apart the two sisters. And Nettie screaming "Nothing but Death can keep me from her." Who would of thought Steven Spielberg can draw that much emotion from such a young actress named Akosua Busia. And Whoopi was perfectly cast as Celie Johnson. The only time I saw her act with such conviction is in "Clara's Heart". Fantastic movie....and now Hollywood producers have decided to remake this classic movie to be released in 2013....WHY???
