A young Arab man is sent to a French prison.
Votes: 84,699 | Gross: $2.08M
My top film for 2009 is this critically acclaimed violent film. From start to finish, its tone just resonates with danger and you could really feel each scene as if you were Malik. I don't know if the whole experience just reminded me of what I felt when I first saw "The Godfather" but this movie just zoomed to the top of my 2009 list. Masterful storytelling!
2. The Hurt Locker (2008)

During the Iraq War, a Sergeant recently assigned to an army bomb squad is put at odds with his squad mates due to his maverick way of handling his work.
Votes: 369,607 | Gross: $17.02M
The 2010 Oscar winner for best picture. A lot of people disagree with the movie taking the plum but I think they got it right. This movie was downright nerve racking, suspenseful and truly one of its kind.
3. The White Ribbon (2009)
R | 144 min | Drama, History, Mystery
Strange events happen in a small village in the north of Germany during the years before World War I, which seem to be ritual punishment. Who is responsible?
Votes: 59,332 | Gross: $2.22M
A haunting classic! If you were to break it down piece by piece, it seems ordinary but the whole movie just works. And I must agree on everyone, the cinematography is just so brilliant, you can picture scenes and shots from your head even after a year of watching it.
4. Inglourious Basterds (2009)
R | 153 min | Adventure, Drama, War
In Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a plan to assassinate Nazi leaders by a group of Jewish U.S. soldiers coincides with a theatre owner's vengeful plans for the same.
Votes: 1,026,943 | Gross: $120.54M
Just when I thought Quentin won't be able to surprise me anymore, this movie came along! I wish he followed Pulp Fiction with this movie!
5. Up (2009)

Seventy-eight year old Carl Fredricksen travels to Paradise Falls in his home equipped with balloons, inadvertently taking a young stowaway.
Votes: 772,290 | Gross: $293.00M
Who knew a story about an elderly can be a touching family animated movie. This movie made me well up, laugh and realize how important it is to move on despite loss and tragedy and the importance of connecting with other people.
6. District 9 (2009)
R | 112 min | Sci-Fi, Thriller
An extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth suddenly finds a kindred spirit in a government agent who is exposed to their biotechnology.
Votes: 577,988 | Gross: $115.65M
A really classy science fiction! Whoever thought a film about aliens can also be a commentary on politics and humanity?
7. An Education (2009)
PG-13 | 100 min | Drama
A coming-of-age story about a teenage girl in 1960s suburban London, and how her life changes with the arrival of a playboy nearly twice her age.
Votes: 119,009 | Gross: $12.57M
A lot of people are dismissing this movie as cliche and boring just because of how the movie ended. But I think it's a refreshing take on an otherwise tired plot. What elevated this movie are the performances of the actors ---- Mulligan, Molina, Sarsgard!
8. Up in the Air (I) (2009)
R | 109 min | Drama, Romance
Ryan Bingham enjoys living out of a suitcase for his job, travelling around the country firing people, but finds that lifestyle threatened by the presence of a potential love interest, and a new hire.
Votes: 288,164 | Gross: $83.82M
It was the perfect time for a movie like this. I was a bit skeptical going into the movie. Was I wildly impressed after watching the movie? Nope but it certainly entertained me. I would say the highest points of the movie goes to the performance of George Clooney and Anna Kendrick.
9. The Blind Side (2009)
PG-13 | 129 min | Biography, Drama, Sport
The story of Michael Oher, a homeless and traumatized boy who became an All American football player and first round NFL draft pick with the help of a caring woman and her family.
Votes: 249,452 | Gross: $255.96M
A controversial nominee and a lot of critics there were better movies which deserves to make the list. But argue all you want but this movie was able to connect to a lot of people... common people like me. Yes there were times it went sentimental but it's nothing short of inspiring.
